Browsing of a 20G backup zip of my Documents folder contents inside the program is agonizingly slow... It is MUCH faster to browse the zip externally using 7-zip... in fact I would advise the developer to drop the pkzip platform and move over to the 7-zip codebase as it is far more advanced in terms of performance as it is multi-core aware while zip engine is not, it offers better compression choices and does not use weak pkzip encryption algorithm and the underlying code seems bettter thought out.

It seems like nice, quality software, but they refuse to give me access to the ExilandSoft (you need a login) website, even though by installing this, you BECOME a Registered user! Logging into the website should NOT be a big SECRET thing!
We are users after all and requesting a login ID should NOT be an issue.

Michael Marx,
I replied you via e-mail. This log in is for only license owners. You have the GOTD (promo) version of Exiland Backup Standard 5.0. You are not a registered user because you didn't purchase a license. To get login/password to Your Personal Account you have to purchase a regulare license (not the GOTD license).
Save | Cancel
Michael Marx, Can't for the life of me figure out WHY you feel the desire to log in to the website! It is not required to use the program which is a pre-activated executable which is why it was quite rightly protected by the SETUP.EXE/GCD Themida Wrapper. I expect the login is for creating support tickets or obtaining full versions of the paid program updates etc all of which are not part of any normal giveaway offer!

I am surprised to see that the Standard edition does not supoort VSS to be able to backup files that are currently open... Windows Vista Home Basic and above support VSS by default, not just Business and Server editions of windows.
Save | Cancel
TK, Just because the operating system supports it, doesn't mean the program has to. Its a 'premium' feature. Home users wouldn't generally have open files to backup...
Save | Cancel
TK,
Exiland Backup Professional supports VSS.
https://exiland-backup.com/VSS-backup-open-locked-files.html
Save | Cancel
Michael (author), I thought it was obvious that I knew the Pro edition supports it but the standard does not because I mentioned that VSS is not a Business only feature.
My point was that both/all paid editions should support that basic function as it is not unusal to have files open while a backround backup event is going on whether you are using a home windows or an enterprise windows.
Save | Cancel
Chris, I never said it HAD to I said I was surprised it was not supported in the paid Standard edition... It is NOT a premium feature it is a standard feature of windows versions I mentioned and enabled by default. It would be understandable to exclude it from the Free edition but this is not the Free edition it is a GAOTD build of the paid for Standard Edition which is the premium version for home users compared to the always free edition. VSS does not require any specialist licenses to impliment support for it as it is part of the modern Windows API and supported by many packages.

Chris, In fact I have found a workaround spawn this program when manaully performing a backup by using
https://github.com/candera/shadowspawn
to create a VSS snapshot then temporarily mount it as a drive letter allowing the spawned copy of this to create file backups from the shadowcopy image and bypass file lockuts. It has not been developped further in many years but seems to work fine in Windows 10 64bit though I would expect problems spawning a 32bit program from the 64bit instance of shadowspawn so I expect it would require use of the 32bit build to spawn a 32bit child program like todays giveaway. This would eleviate the need to create a service on the host machine to interface with the VSS store and allow the portability to be maintained.

Installed fine, but the program comes with exceedingly small fonts and almost invisible task bar etc., that it is practically unusable. I am using ASUS zenbook, with Windows 10. Any help?

Glove,
You can try to increase font size to 10 in the settings.

Hmm I deselected create a desktop shortcut on purpose... but it still created a desktop shortcut.... in the public\desktop folder... seems the install script forgets the desktop shortcut setting choice if install for all users is selected... It should have only installed Sart menu shortcuts for all users rather than current user and respected the previous no desktop shortcut choice. I also deselected start with windows during installation too and when I went into settings the start with windows option was still selcted... so didn't seem to respect that install time choice either.
After being reminded that this is only a file backup program and full backup DOES NOT MEAN Full system backup just full selected files backup... I won't be keeping it. I would like a complete backup solution that can do BOTH full system backup and selectable files and subsiquently changed files backup... with periodic full system backups.

TK, If you need an image backup program, use Aomei Backupper or Macrium Reflect. Your whining is like moaning that Notepad doesn't support coloured text and different fonts - its not designed for that.
Save | Cancel
Chris, As I said I want an ALL in one package that handles a full image and then subsiquent differentials that are file based rather than sector based... Resorting to sperate programs means there is no interaction between the different programs so one would have to create a full image based backup AND a full file based backup in order to be able to then do daily OR on file change differentials... An integrated program with all capabilities would be able to easily produce a comprehensive bomb proof backup policy without having to waste resources and time that could be better used for necesary backups rather than making redundant additionals backups. I am aware this program is not designed for that at this time but rather than whinge at peoples posts you don't like I choose to offer suggestions and information. Developers can ignore the suggestions or embrace them or people like you can try and score points with falatious analogies. BTW if you look at Notepad.exe "Format" menu you'd know you CAN change the font used in Notepad... And if you want to change colours in notepad try altering the themes and use the accessability controls, I am sure we can change the paper and ink colours if we need to.

As a way to test how things work, I created a Full backup from several folders and files (not in folders) on my PC to one folder on an external drive. Then, I told this software to do an Incremental backup to the folder on the external drive without changing the name of that folder (i.e. no date, etc in the name). Then, I added a file to one of the folders that I had backed up with the Full backup, ran the Incremental backup (choosing that same folder-- actually, I just change the type of the backup from Full to Incremental) and to my surprise, my folder on the external drive was completely deleted... instead of adding that new file to the folder that I had previously backed up.
Is this a bug?
Or should I be doing something else?
Save | Cancel
freshlook,
It seems your full backup was replaced by incremental with the same name because you didn't specify a template of naming backups. Probably, using file synchronization is the best for you. For detailed information you can send us the "WorkingFolder\ExilandBackup.tid" file through program's website (Support Request).

Is it possible to do a Full backup once a month, differential once a week, and incremental daily when the other backups aren't being ran? Like 1st of every month is full, every Sunday is a differential, and Monday-Saturday is incremental?
Save | Cancel
Book Guy, What it looks like you do is simply a Differential backup daily and tell it at most how many Fulll backups you want to keep and tell it to do at most 6 differntial backups after the inital full backup that is done by default the first time. on the 7th differenetial it will do a Full backup and on 8th it will start another round of 6 differentials and it will autodelete expired full backups when new ones are added beyond the max full backups limit... assuming it does everything correctly!
Save | Cancel
Book Guy,
Sorry, but the program cannot create incremental and differential backups together, in the same task. You can choose either incremental or differential backup type. FULL backup will be created on first run. You cannot configure the schedule for incremental/differential backups in the current version. We plan to add this apacity in the nearest new versions.

Is this the same version that was given away before in October 2018? It also says it's version 5.
Save | Cancel
Book Guy, there was no GOTD for this software in October 2018. It was March and September, version 4.6 and 4.9 respectively.
Save | Cancel
Chasm, Sorry, it was a SOS giveaway in October. https://sharewareonsale.com/s/free-exiland-backup-100-discount
Save | Cancel
Book Guy,
No, previous version that was given away is 4.9
Save | Cancel
Book Guy, you can check for previous giveaways from the same developer by clicking on the "Publisher" name in the blue box at the top right corner.
Also if you want to avoid such confusion, just add "- SOS" or "- GOTD" at the end of the folder name if you store giveaways from different sites in folders on your hard drive. It's a lot easier to manage that way.

Dears, thanks for this offer.
But please follow the next scenario:
I protect my systemdisk with this backup program.
My systemdisk crashes after 3 months.
How will I restore my systemdisk if I won't receive a license key ?
So as I understood Exiland GOTD is OK to backup everything except a Windows bootdisk and
even when your systemdisk crashes the program becomes obsolete.

Wyns,
No problem.
Exiland Backup saves backups in standard ZIP format or without compressing. So, you can restore your files without Exiland Backup.
Save | Cancel
Wyns, I believe the backups are stored as Zip files, so even without the program installed you should still be able to restore your backups. But this is a file backup program, not a disk image one. So you can still restore your files, but you would still have to re-install all your programs on the computer.
Save | Cancel
Wyns, The GOTD-program makes a backup from files.
What you need is an image of your systemdisk on a separate disk.
Image/clone ... like Macrorit, Clonezilla. . . . . .
And that program should be on a CD/DVD or bootable USB-stick:
https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/4241/how-to-create-a-system-image-in-windows-7/
Save | Cancel
Wyns, I downloaded the free portable zip... installed the wrapped giveaway bundle ... then coppied the executable to the free portables folder and it seems to run ok from the portables folder.it could be put on a USB stick BUT if moving it around different machines the defined tasks will likely not be relevent to every machine it is plugged into... You could work around that by altering the eb.ini file to use a folder on the C:\ drive that all the machines have say C:\ExilandWorkingFolder
like this:
[var]
WorkPath=C:\ExilandWorkingFolder
That way a local copy of only that machines tasks list will be stored on that machine and not to the next machine when the USB stick is moved to the next machine.

The maker's website refers to a "data center" in Dallas. Does this program send any data anywhere outside my PC?

glnz,
No, the program doesn't send any data.

Does this version do automatic backups on a schedule, and can the schedule be complex (6 incrementals followed by full, every week)?
Save | Cancel
glnz,
Please select Incremental backup type in the task settings.
Specify "Number of incremental backups between FULL backups" = 6 and set schedule Every day (one time).
We plan to improve schedule in a next version (to do separately schedule for Increnental)

To Michael (author),
Just to clarify - so I can automate BOTH the weekly full backups and the nightly incremental backups, in this GAOTD version?
When it runs the weekly full backup, does it automatically erase the preceding incremental backups?

glnz, Older backups are not deleted, at least not in my configuration.
Save | Cancel
glnz,
When deleting old full backup, the incremental backups created after it are also automatically deleted.

Can I use this licence for the portable version on your web site? thanks.

hussein,
Sorry, I'm afraid that this GAOTD license is not portable and reinstallable.

Michael (author), I'm using many portable GAOTD software on my flash USB. I'm using one single app even if it is working on more than 1 PC. Thank you anyway.

krypteller, subject to the ini file settings it is capable of operating portably. Only the Pro edition cannot operate portably as it installs a service to interface with VSS, the free and standard versions do not so can be put on a USB stick and moved around or used again after a system re-install.

krypteller, maybe Sandboxie is the solution to my commitment to portable apps.

I downloaded this last time and use it regularly. It is an excellent programme, highly recommended. Occasionally GAOTD offers something well worth while, and this is one of them.
At first I had a problem, or rather something I did not understand, contacted them and got a very quick and satisfactory reply. This too goes to their credit.

I bought the Pro version after trying the GAOTD Standard version. Exiland Backup is now my preferred nightly backup program. Simple to use and it works well.

I bought Exiland Backup Professional, therefore Standard edition is not relevant for me. Nevertheless, I want to thank the developers for a high-quality product. It works faster than analogs by 15-20%.

Highly recomended. Works great. I'm using it since Aomei Backupper lost his ability to keep the exact number of backups.
