I normally don't care for 6-month "trials" but decided to try this one because the screenshots look enticing. I haven't had a lot of time to play with this yet, but I already see some pros and cons.
I love there is a dark theme. Saves my eyes. The layout is comfortable and familiar. The "new sheet" button is where it should be. There are line numbers. I can set the font sizes, even for the headers (most of them, anyway). The headers are in color. I'm sure I could make use of the mind map feature at some point, maybe. The best pro is the markdown handling -- most program offer a side-by-side view as you type, but this program (and DB Paper) offer WYSIWYG. I prefer the WYSIWYG view when journaling and for other casual uses.
But: There's no hashtag support (maybe not needed? but I want them). When you open the mind map, you cannot close it by escaping and there is no close button -- you have to close it by clicking whitespace outside of the box, and that means you then lose your cursor position and your "mind" has to spend energy recalling where you left off. The worst con is that the program not only does not remember window sizing/position upon opening, but it makes terrible use of my screen by being too tall and forcing me to work extra hard to finally get the disappearing menu bar to reappear so I can drag the thing into place, THEN resize to full window. This is a pain enough to make me uninstall (it may be better on larger screens, but 99% of my programs give me no trouble). Joplin and Simplenote are viable replacements for simple note taking, and there are a million mind-mapping programs available.

jay, Click on the "Effie Tutorials" page from the page listing in the middle column, then you'll see an icon to the right of "Try it out." I haven't had time to play with this a lot yet, but the mind map seems to work with bullet lists only.

jay, you can trigger the mind map button when you start a list by typing - and a space, and you'll see the mind map button at the top right of the list.

jay, Goto Introduction then click on Keyboard Shortcuts. The Shortcuts to the Mind Map is in there. I copied the text on the page and pasted it into a text program so I can have it in front of me as a reference. Hope this helps.

So click on that symbol before the word button where it says to.

Figured out the problem. If you request the payment key on the website first before installing, it will setup a demo account that is tied to that email. So when you go to the app, it won't for some reason give you the register prompt if you then use the same email that you used to get the code. Instead, you have to install the app first, sign up for the trial inside the app, and only THEN go to the website and put in your email for the free code.

Ok, here is the solution if you are not getting the register option in the lower left corner. This is assuming you have already requested your activation code from their website.
1. Go to the top ribbon and choose preferences.
2. Choose account.
3. Click on the blue "more" link near the bottom to the right.
4. Select "delete account" and delete the account.
5. Re-register for an account inside the app. You will then see the evaluation mode option at the lower left. Once you bring that up you will see an item that says payment code or something similar and you will enter your code there.
6. You are now registered.

Searched here and https://www.effie.pro/ , can't find if saving to cloud incl. OneDrive, DropBox, etc is possible. If it's not possible, and if notes can't be password-protected, I pass.

Jules Korngold, you can add a heading before a list and the heading will be your central topic in the mind map.
