DoYourData, What's new in 6.3 over previous giveaway versions? for example 6.0 I have looked on your site but I find no details... do you have a dev history page burried on there somewhere or can you post a summary of recent changes here please?

I had the previous version offered a while ago on GAOTD. In preparation for installing this newer version I uninstalled the previous version through the software during installation.

Install went well flawlessly and all the features of the previous version are still available in this newer version.

The only problem I have is that there is no way to enter the license key. All features are present and working but there is no menu item for registration. The "About" lists all program information giving no clue as to whether the software is registered or is not registered.

Has anyone else encountered this?

I installed it but I do not see the following: 'Unlock full version' in the bottom left corner and register the software using the registration info below.

There is nothing in the bottom left corner for me to click on and therefore no way to enter the registration code.

In the section "Others" there is a "Disk Repair" option, be aware it is NOT a special repair algorithim but simply spawns the operating systems bog standard CHKDSK utility so it does nothing to repair a damaged disk but just attempts to detect and fix a damaged filesystem with the very real risk that it could delete errant file entries that you could have accessed prior to CHKDSK repair attempt. It is NOT a substitute for Hard Disk Regenerator or Spinrite or other 3rd party specialist Disk repair tools. It should be called "CHKDSK" or "File System Check/Repair"

one significant ommision with this product is the inability to wipe non windows drive lettered areas of drive e.g. currently unallocated partitions, hidden partitions that do not have windows drive letters like the SYSTEM partition or recovery partition or diagnostics partitions or encrypted volumes that do not exist without being mounted by specific utilities like vera/true-crypt or linux partitions. The program needs a section to permit selecting and ENTIRE physical drive rather than just logical windows drive letters.
Without that there still exists a need for a dedicated tool like DBAN to boot into and wipe entire drives completely regardless of partitions or previous usage.

Downloaded and installed with no issues. Activation code went in OK.
Issue 1: It installed on my C drive with no option to change the location. Since I use a small SSD as a boot drive I don't install anything on the primary drive.
Issue 2: After testing the delete of a file and a folder it created a folder name "DoYourData....". The only way I could make that folder name disappear was to remove the thumb drive and reinsert it. If I had used an internal hard drive how would I have removed that folder? I do have hidden file parameters on as part of my backup job... "attrib -h -r -s H:*.* /s /d"

VicS, sometimes windows file systems drivers fall over and windows explorer shows a ghost file/folder entry and it can be resolved by rebooting or loging out and then back in. Microsoft Windows is NOT deisgned to be a resiliant quality and data integrity assured operating system it has far too many potential failure points within the software alone without taking into account the non-resilant hardware on desktop/workstation/notebook systems e.g. no ECC RAM sticks
background radiation can cause individual bits in an SDRAM chip to flip state and without builtin ECC circuitry in teh RAM chips it cannot be detected or corrected and can and often does result in data/code corruption resulting in spurrious errors or crashes.

VicS,

I downloaded, installed, and activated the program on my cloud drive which I have mapped as a folder on my C: drive. It didn't seem to have any issues whatsoever running. In fact, I utilized the Application Uninstaller function of the program to actually uninstall itself which it did except for leaving the folder as described. However, I then deleted the folder and emptied the recycle bin and it was gone. Hope this helps.

Activation is not working. After entering (cut and paste) the registration code, the "activate button" is greyed out. No way to activate.

Paul, Maybe you inadvertently used the Mac code rather than the Windows code (or vice versa) like I did.

Reply   |   Comment by Buckley  –  Last month  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

Paul, any chance you installed and activated a previous giveaway, say 6.0 and the new install is picking up the previous license and preventing it from letting you to enter the new license code?

Reply   |   Comment by TK  –  Last month  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Buckley, Thank you for reminding me about the code.
It turned out the problem was the last character was wrong when I did the copy and past of the code from the readme file. I changed the last character from K to 7, then activation went fine.

I have purchased/used this program in the past and it is very good. It appears to have a different interface, but is an outstanding giveaway.
Installed with no problem.

I assume that this programme is not applicable for Solid State Drives?

Paul S,
It supports data erasure on SSD.

Reply   |   Comment by DoYourData  –  Last month  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

DoYourData, So will it make a difference to my SSD, as I was previously told that SSDs don't need cleaning and erasing like this? Please can you confirm?

Reply   |   Comment by Paul S  –  Last month  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

Traditional erasing overwrites the data on a conventional hard disk, making multiple passes because the write heads wobble a tiny bit. That of course doesn't apply to an SSD since there are no write heads, but they still can be cleared or erased. Erasing or clearing data is a safeguard before selling or giving or throwing away a used conventional, SSD, or USB drive or memory card.

SSDs tend to use over-provisioning, which practically speaking means that you cannot access every block of storage to make sure it's cleared. An SSD can however send a voltage spike to each block of storage resetting it to its initial [out of the box] state. Some manufacturers offer their own tools for download, & you can use 3rd party tools like DoYourData Super Eraser. The problem is that because not every block is easily accessible, you can't verify it worked -- when tested several years ago on different brands & models of SSD, it did not always work. That doesn't mean another user could access that remaining data, but an electronic tech might. Many companies use a disk shredding service to physically destroy discarded drives. Note that some tools require the SSD to be disconnected from the PC/laptop & then reattached, &/or booting to a USB stick.

Paul S, SSD dievices conencted directly to computer via SATA or other designed in busses under operating systems that support TRIM on a file by file deletion or partition deletion basis like Windows 7 or above, for instance, automatically practically erase deleted files data by de-allocating the flash memory sub-pages from access for the given LBA and logical clusters making the data imediatly inaccessible via the SSD firmware and queuing the pages for eventual perminant electrical erasure during periodic garbage collection by the SSD drives firmware. rendering it unrecoverable by labs accessing the flash memory chips directly.

Prctically erasing better than overwriting alone since each write to an existing file on a SSD drive remaps the new write to a new recently erased flash sub-page and the previous contents are again queued for eventual erasure in future garbage collection. Both are just as secure as each other but overwriting needlessly reduces the drives lifetime writes availabiltiy each time it happens. The ONLY times it is necesary to (in my experience) is when TRIM is not implimented properly either by the operating system (SSD drives used in XP or Vista systems or old linux systems) and/or SSD drives that are within any USB drive caddy of any sort or SSD drives whose firmware does not imediately deallocate the original files mapped flash memory pages from the LBA address it was assigned to and does not imediately replace subsiquent reads with zeroed sector data instead of the original sectors contents AND you have data you cannot afford to be retrieved by anyone else.

Zubair Ahmed,
You should activate it before giveaway ends

Reply   |   Comment by DoYourData  –  Last month  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+5)

Zubair Ahmed, depends upon your circumstances if you have a previous giveaway version such as 6.0 activated from a previous giveaway on the target machine.. the answer is YES for this giveaway as this new update will re-use the previous giveaways activation data. It DOES normally validate a new license activation with their server but once that is done all it does is put the license key in the file configure.dat in the installation folder.

[register]
sn=VALID LICENSE CODE

and next time it runs it looks at the file and sees it and accepts it and behaves activated.
I could make suggestions for the developer if they want to tighten up their licensing further. But it's something if they were concerned about I'm sure they could come up with some very simple improvements.
