The Meridian: Squad 22 has now ended. Key winners will be notified soon.

Whispering Willows. continues till Saturday afternoon at 1800hrs (UK time). key winners for Whispering Willows will be announced Saturdsay evening.
Tomorrow, Friday 23rd September sees another Steam game with 200 keys on offer. I've played the game recently and can attest to it being a very playable game that potentially should appeal to a wide section of the giveaway community that are into playing computer games, unfortunately I'm not at liberty to disclose the name of the game until it goes live tomorrow morning. For those totally against Steam or other client based games, there will be a free standing game available on Saturday that does not require a key and is a global giveaway. I'm not sure about Sundays game yet.
Removed the rest of the comment because the stats were related to the giveaway that has just ended and to be honest I don't see why I should have to justify myself to those with negative views, we shall just have to agree to disagree on that issue.

Whiterabbit-uk, Since the sites are "intimately linked", why is it necessary to write a long comment when those interested in games can simply click the tab at the top of the page? Not only does the comment seem redundant, it obviously triggers a negative response from the visitors who are coming to this page to read comments relevant to today's giveaway which I am sure you can agree your comment is not. Just a positive suggestion.

Whiterabbit-uk, "I apologize if you think my posts are inappropriate; what is important is that community members see the offers available and thereby have the chance to win a decent game. "

I would guess that people who are interested in games will already know about the other co-joined site that has existed for 10 years.

olrowdy01,

That's not the case olrowdy01; the games are now appearing during the week. Since April 2008 till recently game giveaways were only ever available at weekends apart from a couple of games that were offered on special days such as Easter Monday last year. For the past couple of months games have started to appear weekdays as well. However, from comments I've read some community members are missing those weekday games. Because only a tiny percentage of community members who download (at least over on the game giveawayoftheday) ever bother to actually comment, (i.e. around 0.01% to 0.005%, - figures based off several years of giveaway stats) this could mean a significant number of those interested in games are missing the opportunity to get these weekday games judging by the comments already posted in the past few months mentioning that they had missed the giveaways because most community members assume the games are weekend only.

Why it bothers you and obviously others by the number of negative ticks my comment is getting I really am stumped to understand. A roll of the mouse wheel sees my comment disappear from your gaze, so why the issue, especally when all I'm doing is trying to help.

Bill Johnson,

As already mentioned in reply to another community member, not everyone is aware that we are getting games during the week. Why it bothers you and othersso much that you have to comment, I am surprised, and moreso disappointed that my help receives such a negative response. Just scroll down to the next comment instead of feeling you have to reply.

Whiterabbit-uk, Did it end or is the link in red just not working now? Haven't tried that link, not enough time, but confusing to see it still offering Join and Win. Thanks for your efforts & comments.

Suggestion: Have the game button at the top of the page change to a flashing "New Game" vs the steady "Games" on those days.

I doubt many people would have mentioned it if the games notice was a short sentence at the very top or bottom of the page. But it appeared in the comments for the give away of the day.

People tend to not return to sites that start annoying them. Some of us are making comments as an expression of mild annoyance.

olrowdy01 response:
Because games are not on the primary menu of this portion of the GOTD site. In the past there were a lot of computer utilities such as file managers, video/text editors etc etc. There were probably some games but it wasn't (and still isn't) a main feature of this area of GOTD. Nor are "contests".

Please note that some of the major commenters to GOTD in the past are no longer posting. Truthfully GOTD is losing some of its original purpose with the [not so] 'free' giveaways.

Stephen Brown, I didn't down vote your comment. Or are you also posting as whiterabbit? I am curious why it bothers you so much that the regular users of this page AREN'T interested in reading about the offerings on a different page. Perhaps your posts would be more useful if you either a) posted reminders on the game page on whatever weekday was normal before (since apparently that day still gets a lot of hits), and b) just posted a simple short message on the Windows page saying "just a reminder that there are new games daily now" instead of a long drawn out description. My impression is that you are overly sensitive to the other pages being more popular than the game page. Attacking us by questioning why we comment isn't going to make you any new fans. Again, just trying to give constructive positive feedback.

I have had more than one business client that has wanted to move their Outlook from POP to IMAP format. This is because those in business are relying more and more on distributed email due to the popular rise in mobile devices. I think today's giveaway is a valuable one, aside from the endless pdf and image-whatever utilities that keep appearing here. Nice to see something different for a change.

Definitely a keeper. Thanks so much to GOTD and GlexSoft (a Canadian company)

You can almost immediately tell when a non-far-east establishment gives something away.
Please, definitely no offence meant to anybody in this world, but the usability factor usually increases enormously (from a European point of view). No guess work where to
I am running Office 365 (aka Outlook 2016) and the program did not have to be told where the .ost file is located.

Installation went smoothly, as did activation. The interface is intuitive and provides a number of helpful options. Overall, this is a program that I will keep and probably buy when the current license expires. I would offer two comments or suggestions.
1. It looks as if this is an annual subscription. It would be helpful to have that explicitly stated. It would also be good to know if at the end of the subscription, does the program cease to function or do you lose the ability to upgrade to newer versions.
2. The scroll bar in the center of the interface does not move by scrolling the middle mouse button; you must move the cursor to the scrollbar and move it. Its a minor thing, but a bit of an annoyance.

Thanks for the chance to test this out.

Ok Windows 10 x64 Pro. There's an activation file which works. There's an option to install as 32 bit OR 64 bit. Choose 64 bit of course since Outlook 2016 is x64. Makes shortcut. Program comes up saying it's v. 1.9.1.0 WIN32 registered to Giveawayoftheday.
For Home and non-profit use only. Guessing I have to deleted this Revo way and retry with Outlook 2016 open to get it to install as x64. Has options to backup by date, size, w/ or w/o attachments, etc. Near as can tell it won't expire, just won't pull in v. 2.0.0.0 whenever that is released. I further guess it's ok even if sticks at x32 version.

sludgehound, uninstalled, reran w/ Outlook 2016 x64 open. Installed as Win64 Demo. Ran activation file. Came up as WIN32 registered. One more try and if not registering as WIN64 then in trash she goes.

Reply   |   Comment by sludgehound  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

sludgehound, Installed under Windows 10 x64 Pro to "C:\Program Files\Data Extraction Kit for Outlook" and again after install (pre-activation) program shows as WIN64 Demo but upon running activation file, it becomes WIN32 and activated. Don't want it to be WIN32 for Outlook 2016 x64 so bye bye. Thx GOTD.
Oh one other thing, if try to install to a D: drive be sure to add a final / slash to end of the intended Folder or install will spray the program files all over root or parent Folder. Not cool.

Reply   |   Comment by sludgehound  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

sludgehound, Solved the x64 issue. Seems that option for x32 or x64 is broken in sense that it will always point to the dekit32.exe file launcher. Changing the created shortcut to dekit64.exe works. To be sure I also put the 2 GOTD files in same Folder as the installed app, that's Activate.exe & Activate.gcd that can be later deleted. Anyway, install should match whatever your Outlook 2016 is (likely x64) but the last part to launch the program will start up as x32 even after activation. Just alter shortcut.

There is no way I can point the application to the location of the ost file. It relies on the local user profile to find it. What if I don't have Outlook installed?

Reply   |   Comment by What if I don't have Outlook installed?  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

It is out of system Requirements. You may export data from OST file only if it is connected to Outlook profile. Outlook is required for this software to be installed.

Karl Kuhla,

You should have Microsoft Outlook installed at your system. It is the system requirement. All error codes are described in our FAQ: https://www.outlooktransfer.com/frequently-asked-questions/

update: I overlooked that Microsoft Outlook has to be installed (or, as Angelina Jolie :-( noted, MS CDO Libraries).
I have none of both, so it seemingly can't work.
Anyway, the error message seems a bit cryptical to me.
A message like "you fool have no Outlook installed" could help ;-)

Hi Robert, you’ve been kind enough to answer some questions as to various technical aspects of the software.

How about the questions concerning
– your licensing scheme,
– whether mail may be processed "internally" in the off-line mode or it needs to post data to your server in order to process Outlook data.

Your kind reply will be welcome as the GAOTD time-limit is approaching.
Regards
Marek

Installed without a problem, all is clear.(+1)
Too many options for me. However I like to have them all. (+-)
Well, the GUI is user-friendly. (+1)
I found that option useful to backup my settings and passwords: Reports > Accounts and Passwords (+1)
Contacts listing option is nothing for me, maybe useful for those who need to backup or move their contacts to other email software. (+-)
Using this tool and it's reports I can now easily create the mailing list for Mailchimp. (+1)
For me it is five star software.

Ronald, Does this backup RULES? Every time Outlook 2016 blows up on with my cable ISP and I have to redo POP3 account (nix on IMAP kind), I end up losing the Rules that send incoming emails to various created Folders if I've deleted the .pst file associated with POP3 account. When do a re-import of a backed up .pst the Rules only work for default Folders that Outlook makes like Inbox. Folders I had associated with Rule (s) don't appear, and re-dded Rule doesn't recognize the Folder until I redo the setting in the Rule which sends email to specific Folder.
Hopefully this app will help with above. I'll keep making twice weekly backups of C drive.

Will this work for moving emails
FROM Outlook Express 6 (very old - on my XP machine and 32-bit)
TO either (a) Thunderbird or (b) Outlook 2016 64-bit (part of O365 Home 64-bit)?
- I ask because the word "express" does not appear on the company's website.
Important - if this won't work, what will?

glnz, Current tool is designed to export (extract) Outlook data. So you may use it to migrate FROM Microsoft Outlook, not TO MS Outlook.
You may do the following to convert Outlook Express emails to Outlook:
1. Use this command line tool to extract DBX files to EML format:
http://www.outlookexpresstooutlook.com/downloads/undbx-0.20.zip
2. Use EML to Outlook Transfer tool to import EML files to Outlook:
https://www.outlooktransfer.com/how-to-transfer-eml-files-to-outlook/
(ask our support to provide you with discount code and mention that you have come from GOTD)

...to Thunderbird:
1. Use this command line tool to extract DBX files to EML format:

2. Drag and drop EML files into desired Thunderbird folder to import them.

Downloaded and installed OK on Windows 7 4 bit.

I cannot tell whether it is licensed for only a year or whether it is a permanent licence. It says the license is called "Home" which according to the order page on their website is only a one year licence, but there is no indication in the software of an expiry date.

Two shortcomings (in my view)
1. You can't exclude subfolders from an export of messages
2. You can't export a single message.

Or if you can I failed to find out how to do it.

Thanks - that was very responsive. I have tested and it now has the option to exclude subfolders and it works as expected.

Note that my antivrus (Avast) would not let the new file run and has sent it off to be "checked". I had to disable Avast to be able to run the program.

I'm hoping it will work once Avast has done its "checking"

Reply   |   Comment by NW  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Of no use to me as I use OST files (The next generation) and not PST files (Outdated)

Reply   |   Comment by Ferdinand Smith  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-18)

.OST files are simply .PST files 'under the hood'. However, rather than contain the full email (like .PST files) they consist mainly of indexes as the email is retained on the server. They contain the header of the email and how to get the full email.
PST files are not outdated. More and more people are switching to using IMAP to access their emails, rather than POP3 which downloads the full email. .OST files are used when you use IMAP. So the file format itself is not outdated, as its just a container or database.

Reply   |   Comment by Chris Locke (CS Computer Services)  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+35)

The tool can also use your current Outlook user profile. So if you have your OST file connected to Outlook, the tool may work. If you OST files were disconnected, there is no way to access the data storages for Data Extraction Kit and for Outlook as well.
You are not correct by saying that OST format is modern one and PST is old. OST file is using when Outlook is configured to connect to Exchange or IMAP server. PST is using for offline storage of POP3 accounts.

Reply   |   Comment by Robert  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+9)

Robert, You may be right with old vs new ... certainly the newer Outlook.com tries to force the use of OSTs (Outlook Storage File) in preference to PSTs (Personal Storage Files). But OSTs have been around for a long time (10+ years? ... in business and where exchange is used and at home within Office).

Anyway Ferdinand ... to address the problem at hand rather than hijack the thread ... if you use "only" OSTs, and you have Outlook (Office suite) (that I think you probably have) it seems to me that you could 1) create a PST, 2) copy your OST data to a PST, 3) execute the export and 4) delete the PST.

Reply   |   Comment by Aussie  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

Aussie, there is no need to copy OST data to PST file first. You may use Data Extraction Kit directly to export data from Outlook profile connected to this OST file. Program allows to work with PST file AND/OR Outlook profiles.

Reply   |   Comment by Robert  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Robert,

I may have misread your thread - sorry.

Either way then, Ferdinand has solutions. He can use 1) the program will extract data from OSTs (I haven't tested that) or 2) copy the OST to a PST ...

All good.

Onefut, sure it can, however it works together with locally installed Outlook application. If you using only on-line subscription for Office 365, it means that Data Extraction software will not work for you.

Onefut, per description it is extracting data from Microsoft Outlook, not from Office 365.
