Easily got the user ID and registration code within 20 seconds because I am already a registered member of Franzis.
Installed and activated the software without any fuss and very quickly.
About the actual use of this software:
It is NOT easy to use for those unfamiliar with masking and photo editing.
The software interface is un-intuitive.
There is an online Help Manual, which is not too helpful.
You may need to view more Youtube videos demonstrating how to do it.
Incidentally, Adobe Photoshop Elements from quite a few versions back, already offer very easy photo masking.

I am surprised at how well this tool works. I wasn't expecting much and am pleasantly surprised. It does its job easily. No muss, no fuss. Nothing fancy and no real learning curve. I'm keeping it. Thank you Franzis and GAOTD!

Blue, It initially did that on mine when I selected a folder of images. However it soon replaced each "?" with a thumbnail image of the photograph. A few it left black after the "?" went away. Many are rotated 90 degrees.

BobbyA, I left clicked on the Cutout 5 Desktop Icon and clicked on Compatibility. It said it was not compatible with my Windows 10. So I checked it to run in Compatibility for Windows 8 and then ran the troubleshooter a couple of times and it said it was fixed. And now it works! Thanks for commenting.

Why is it called Cut Out if it has no cut-out capability?

Nowhere can I find the "scissors" ( used as the program logo ) as a tool inside the program to actually "cut out" anything from a digital image file contents display.

Sad.

How do you even load a picture to work on?

You can't just click on a picture in the ( fast ! ) file explorer display in order to begin editing it ... when you click on a picture it gets big, then goes away if you actually try to do anything else with it other than say "ooo" and "ahh".

Oh, right-click to edit a picture.

Wow, they ought to tell every other program in the world that those other programmers got it wrong, clicking on things is the wrong way to select and open things, Franzis knows better, now it's the right-click that we all should start using from here on.

Don't point at things you want, like in the real-world.

And so on.

Nowhere is there a scissors.

Nowhere.

... typical German "we know more than you, you idiot peasant customer ... and we ain't telling!".

Franzis, are you there?

I managed to register this program. You need to register with Franzis first.
I'm pleased they included a manual for this program as it's not easy to use and well take some time before I can evaluate as I need a better understanding of CutOut 5. No success on my first attempt so I'll need to study the manual more. But I gave this program a thumbs up as it has a lot of features and I like the way the program has been designed.

Peter Blaise,
I like to quickly test a program and if not too complex I get some sort of a result but in this case the program is more complex and I needed to study the manual more to try and get the results I wanted.
I still liked the layout and how the program changed to a different screen when you had completed what you wanted to do on the first screen. Also I don't have the screen cluttered with controls which is good.
Update:
I did manage to get some reasonable results but still need to explore this more to use its advanced features.

I don't know of any program that can separate fine strains of hair on a person's head from the back ground. It's a good test for this program that claims to separate the finest details. So for this reason I'll try this program, but I don't think it well work.
Anyone else tried this test?

Manually, we can select pixels, and if the hair is too thin, upsize first.

Let us know if this offers ANY automatic ( or even manual ) cut out capabilities.

Peter Blaise,
With a basic test the background was not removed from the fine hair but this program has some advanced features which will take time to learn which should remove the background from fine objects such as strains of hair.

From Franzis, you get

-- a separate, short, personal ID number that identifies you,

-- and separate, long, registration number for each software of theirs you can use.

Cut and paste, don't type.

And don't confuse the different numbers for each other.

You need the short ID number once to install.

You will need the long registration number twice, once to install, and once more to run the program the first time.

Or just click "later" and use it as a demo.

Re-install ( maybe uninstall first ) if you need to try again with the numbers, perhaps t convert the demo, if you got that far, to the registered version.

My download of Cutout5standard from the GOTD provided link went fine without server delays and was quick. It was only then that I realized that this version is the same as the GOTD version 5.0.0.1 given out last time on 2018-03-23. Had I been made aware up front about it by either Franzis or GOTD, I would not have needed to download (wasting bandwith and time) on something I have already installed and still working fine on my machine.

I don't mind being offered an old version, so long as the version is stable (not buggy) and is complete (not with certain functions/features missing or disabled). I do mind products whose licenses expire in under one year and will ignore them and see no point installing them.

Franzis may be giving us old versions to try out, but at least the licenses provided on their products don't expire.

For lots of people photo or image editing is about adding a few automated filters -- Instagram provides 40+ -- but for more serious editing, you're often going to isolate parts of the image that you want to work with. You do that by creating masks, interchangeably called selections. And once you isolate an object in a photo, creating a mask that covers everything else, you can alter just that selected object, or you can copy & paste what you've selected somewhere else, like on top of another photo. Or you can reverse that mask so it covers the object, editing or replacing everything else in the photo.

Most image editing software has its own tools for creating masks or selections, and nowadays those can be quite good in apps like PaintShop Pro &/or Photoshop. It seems that rather than compete with these built-in tools, Franzis markets its Cutout app as a tool to make replacing the backgrounds in photos as easy & accurate as possible. Cutout is still a masking tool, a bit similar I think to the highly rated Topaz Remask, but with this focus on replacing backgrounds, maybe they feel they'll attract more buyers that are a little less experienced at photo editing, who may not know yet that that's how masking in an image editor works.

That doesn't mean that you shouldn't try the Franzis Cutout GOTD if you think it might be useful, assuming they fix the reported registration problems -- normally Franzis giveaways work just fine, so I'd assume this is some temporary glitch. Cutout may or may not let you create masks easier &/or better than the image editing software you're using -- that depends on the software you're using -- or maybe you just want to change backgrounds without getting further into image editing. And if you like the software, Ashampoo is selling version 6 std. for $19.99, or once you get on their mailing list [or if you already are], Franzis has a 50% off sale on Cutout & Sharpen products today & tomorrow.

[ mike ],

Thanks for the general exploration of digital image file contents "masking" versus "selection".

Cutting out, however, seems to be this programs bugaboo, and I could find absolutely no "scissors" tool -- like the Franzis Cutout logo promises -- anywhere in the program.

Oh well.

Thanks for the lead to Topaz Remask, who offer a free trial.

I think many programmers who offer their stuff on GOTD need to do a Google search for their competition before thinking that their programs are "all that".

Google search:

Reply   |   Comment by Trev  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

Trev,

Yeah, getting the latest version would be nice, but from the developer's perspective, they likely feel you need some sort of incentive to buy something from them. So like many other developers with offers on GOTD, they could either come up with a feature limited but current version of their software, or they could offer an older, but complete app.

It really helps to go there BEFORE Reg Page is reached via instructions in readme file alone. Having Account with them is crucial! Next step - be logged in here: https://reg.franzis.de/en/login and proceed with installing, registering and activating. I already have a copy of CutOut5, so shan't be going through it all today.
