I was a bit leary after reading through the initial posts, but downloaded and installed the program, anyhow. It installed and registered easily on my WinXP (SP2) Home Ed. Thanks GSH (Msg #7) for the tip on registering; it wasn’t easy to find. It’s extremely simple to use

I also had the problem so I dropped a note that night to the feedback address and the told me to go to their website and download the newer version for Vista.

They were really very nice and apologised for the inconvenience

If you have the Nero wave editor, or another decent one, bundled with the DVD, etc., this software is of no use. I was disappointed, because I imagined that a specially designed 'ringtone maker' should do something more than marking fragments, cutting and saving them! No 'fade' option to make the end sound better, so other sound editing. The random option is just for fun, and the send by e-mail option is probably for people who do not know how to send e-mail attachements ;).

I have uninstalled this software! The interface offers very
little information, no settings to adjust, and the resulting wav file is nowhere near as well made as the freeware audacity makes. Plus it doesn't make qcp files, the most common and tricky of ringtones.
This tutorial http://ringtoneqcp.fateback.com/ teaches how to make them and gives the links to the free software for the job.
As far as I can tell, all this cool ringtone stuff does is let you chop a chunk out of a file and save it as a wav, and not even a proper 8 bit mono wav as used in ringtones!
If it actually allowed you to take the input file and select the proper file type for your phone as output, and it would output exactly the file type and settings you needed therefrom, it would be well worth thirty dollars. As it is, it's not worth the drive space it occupies.

#90 since it is only a small percentage of any given content which may or may not be copyright in its entirety I suspect you will find it is permitted under the fair use clause in the same manner that you are allowed to copy a page or three from a library book for personal use but not the whole book and since it is not copying some elses comerial ringtones but cropping and generating your own it is not infringing their copyright (if any) either.

Commendations to the developer for rolling out 2 revisions within the 24hour offering period. I can confirm it is functional under Vista BASIC. I was able to load an mp3 and choose the aproximate start and end points and on hitting save button choose amr type and navigate to a convienient folder and save the file. If my older Sony Erricson could use amr files as a ring tone it would have been fine. As it was it can just play them as a media item only.

If the developers are looking for suggestions to improve the software, I have a couple. Functionaly it lacks precision. The start and end points are displayed rounded to the nearest second, that is a long time in a musical sequence so one cannot control the exact cut points with any degree of certainty. Make position display to the 1/100 of a second and add up/down control buttons instead of only dragging the start and end markers blindly through the passage with no indication of where we are in the track until we hit play selection button. Also making the action of dragging the markers about update in real-time the start and end times respectivly to give us a clue where we are and how far we need to move to get to where we want to be. Maybe a Zoom in and out on the timeline would be a smart idea too.
It might also be a wise idea to adjust the GUI so it can be resized for users with large displays. It is ok on small laptop displays but it would be tiny and difficult to use on any significant desktop display!

Just decided to try loading an AVI, this one is a 40+ min xvid episode of a TV series... it is loading but it now says it is upto 900% and is still rising! Typing in this comment box was severly lagging behind my typing while it was being loaded even though cpu usage was about 50%. But when it had finished it did allow me to take an excerpt from the theme music and save it odd as an amr file, but with even less accuracy due to lack of precise feedback where sliders are and the fact that there is no zoom to aid positioning.

This is a great program. It works great and I have already sent my wife and 13 year old son new ringtones from their favorite .mp3's. It is going to save us some money on new ringtones and it does what it says. For help on sending the finished .mp3 file to your phone, follow the instructions below:

#15 - Most cell phones with "real music" capability (ie, not just midi ringtones) can use mp3 files. You would have to look up the length of file that it will recognize as a ringtone. For example, my phone takes any mp3 clip that's 20 seconds or shorter; longer than that, and I can't set it as a ringtone. You can find the info for yours on the manufacturer's website.

As a side note, I don't know if this program can send the file to your phone wirelessly. You might need a USB cable or removable mini/micro SD card to get the ringtone from your computer to your phone.

Hallo, I know it is late for some tips to get the program running under Vista, but perhaps it will help those who dl narrow the deadline.
1 - Download the original file you get from GOTD and the file 1.1.4 from the developer.

http://www.coolringtonemaker.com/down/crm.exe

2 - Unzip the GOTD file and read the read me, then start the setup to get the GOTD activation;
after you inserted the path for the installation (eg : C:\Program Files\...), cut off the setup process, that should be enough for the GOTD activation.
3 - Run the 1.1.4 setup from the developer and then shut the program if running .
4 - Run the program as administrator and insert the Reg-Code you got in the read me text and in the activation message, shut down the program.
5 - Reboot
6 - Start the program (without admin rights)
Now the program is registered and the menu bar is working and you can happily rip off your music.
I do not know how to send the snips to a cellphone - but that doesn't matter for me, as I do not use such a thing. I need short sound files for my messenger e.g. or other alarm sounds on the computer.
I hope my comment makes sense - sorry for my bad English.

Thanks Mr Dickson (#106) for offering the software to GOTD and us, reading all the comments and taking the time to post the link to the updated version.
Loaded it in Vista Home Premium and did find it tricky to get to the register screen. Clicking the flashing icon at the top left opened a new browser screen offering the sale of it and upon closing it found the register screen. Entered the code from the GOTD read me file and it registered, told me to restart it and quit. Restarted it and started experimenting.
The program works flawlessly for me and creates great quality sound. There is a couple of thoughts for those of you who did not seem to get it to work. You can only work with MP3 files I found and convert the results of your trimming work to one (or all) of 4 formats: MP3, WMA, WAV, & AMR. Although you 'can' load other formats than MP3 in like MIDI or WAV and they will display the wave chart as normal, I found I could not do anything else except move the marker out, and as soon as I let go of it, back it snapped. Perhaps the other formats can be loaded and worked with in other operating systems ( and if someone has found this to work, please comment), but not on this Vista Home Premium, Dual 2.1 HP Unit. I will try it next on a Windows 2000 Professional and see.

Now that I have learned the use, I find it a simple and easy to use program for grabbing ringtones from MP3 files. Those of you who have need to upload your ringtones to your phone should look at the programs offered by datapilot ( http://datapilot.com/ ). A great way to solve it.

Install and Activation is fine.
Nothing does wrong(for now).
Fast and easy to cut.
but for $29.95?
not worth it.

I prefer using Virtual DJ.
It can mix 2 songs or more, add special effect to song and can recording song to .mp3 and .wav.
Like your own On-Screen DJ Set.
try it out.I bet the Virtual DJ is a software to make music to your liking.

That very worth it.

Works beautifully on XP Home. Thanks to those pointed out using the "Buy It Now" button in the upper right of the home screen to register the software. Without that, I probably would not have gone there. Also note though, that for me, the registration window (small frame) poped up about 1/2 second before a new explorer window covered it up. The explorer window only allows buying the product and the registration frame allows you to enter the provided registration code. The installation process defaults to installation directly under the C: drive rather than under C:\Program Files

I found this product very easy to use. Exactly right for my needs. I'm very happy with this product.

I downloaded the app from the first link and could not/did not get a registration code with the download; however, I went back and downloaded from the "mirror" link and extracted it through Winzip and a registration code template popped up (behind the application).
There were no Read Me files with either downloads - not sure why - I even emailed the company and got a quick response but it did not help as I was looking for the Read Me files; click on the upper right-hand corner icons rendered no help either except to purchase the application. As I said, FWIW. :)

Tried and tested. Very good as I can extract ringtone from video as well. Suggestions: 1. can't zoom in to precisely select cutting points. Doing in steps now. How about allowing to type in the selection box to change numbers for fine tuning. 2.Menu is not active. But buttons do the job. Overall: not perfect GUI, but does its job perfectly.
