Will this software identify the operating system (Windows, Windows Pro and version, product code, time-limited etc)?

I love the GOTD community (and GGOTD also!). When a poorly written piece of code is offered, they jump on it warn everyone, all the while pointing out what's wrong so the developer can fix it, or so they can get help from others. Could easily do without the personal, political and country slams, but most of the people here keep me coming back for more. Once in a while the software is very nice too, I've even bought some of the giveaways.

Couple of items I find annoying:

1) Every time I launch the program it asks for my e-mail address to send me "important information".
2) During installation it did not ask me if I wanted a desktop shortcut...it just created it. I had to manually add it to my Start Menu where it did not exist.
3) When I look at the Summary for my system, it lists my video driver as my Hard Drive.and under "Video" it lists the amount of RAM I have installed.
4) There are no "options" for the program.

Hi everybody. :-)

Glad the developer read here.
He didn't read (or he didn't reply) on SoS.
I scanned the "setup.exe" (or its equivalent name) of the program (I didn't scan the GAOTD package) with the usual tools (Win10Defender, SAS, MBAM2, EEK, virustotal, metadefender and jotti): they didn't detect a single problem.

Problems and resolutions (AKA suggestions to the developer):
1) After the program setup.exe was downloaded, MS internet explorer 11 said “The publisher of [this program] couldn’t be verified.”.
Therefore, when the program starts, the user account control window (when the UAC is enabled, obviously) appears and says “Do you want to allow this app from an unknown publisher to make changes to your device?”.
I.e., there isn’t a valid certificate.
The obvious suggestion is to add a valid certificate.
2) Some information in its windows is cut.
I can’t either resize the columns or resize the main window.
And the balloon tips won’t even appear.
Hence my suggestion is to add balloon tips and/or to be able to resize columns (and the main window).
3) There are too much useless information.
My suggestion is to consider to create two modes: simple mode with only useful and less information, advanced mode like it already is.
4) Given that there are already valid free alternatives, consider to halve the price of your software.

Thank's very much for the warnings in advance, I think I'll skip this. Sending logs over the internet to a ftp-server...??? Why??? And if that would not be *extremely* serious as such, using what protocol? And encrypted data or not, like sending customer data to a server would not be a breach of confidence anyway?

Reply   |   Comment by kpson  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+11)

kpson, Are you serious?
Sending +1 to "Sys Installed" at the server is violation?

For years now the app that probably dose this even better and FOR FREE is Belarc Advisor. Tells you everything even if you are missing any microsoft security updates and even all important software keys used on your system. We don't need another app to do all this for money. But hay, competition is what makes the world go around right?

On the whole, I liked this program. Firstly, the download size was only 600KB, which in an age of bloat was already appealing. It then installed and opened quickly, revealing a good deal of detailed information about my hardware which would not have been easy to find otherwise. I have used Belarc for many years, and thought Blackbird compared well in the degree of detail it supplied almost instantly.
Drawbacks included the Start menu defect others have mentioned (I dealt with this in no time by simply dragging the Desktop shortcut into the Blackbird Start menu folder) and the fact that, as far as I can tell, there is no way of exporting the data short of using a screenshot, preferably with OCR.
I agree that Captcha is getting out of hand: I am also fed up with guessing which fuzzy photos I am supposed to click on! (Are these predatory robots real?).

Wow, there are many negative comments about this software. I don't use this software long enough, so I can't rate or review it. But I'm grateful to SharewareOnSale, GiveawayOfTheDay and Black Bird Cleaner Software for this giveaway!
Belarc Advisor, Speecy, Everest Home Edition or AIDA64 (paid) is good. But Black Bird System Info Pro may be a newbie, so we may give it a try. Thank GOTD for this giveaway.

I guess most is said what needs to be said. Video and hard drive info, in summary, are switched. I compared the info it gave me with the info Speccy gave me and Speccy gave me much much more. Not impressed, uninstalled

Sorry for all of you good-natured decent testers.

I expect my comment not to show or last too long or get down-voted.

Anyway, with more and more useless stuff from developers who would not be able to spell the word engineer correctly I see this once great site in a state of steady decline.

I can tolerate time-restricted licences for pricey software but stuff that could be rightfully termed potentially unsafe does not belong here.

Mayday, Mayday :-)

Sigrid.DE,
I wholeheartedly agree with all you have said here Sigrid. Definitely seeing the demise of the good offerings on this site.

No longer the excitement of visiting this site like the GAOTD days - more a question of , "Oh dear, what will it be today, then."

Too much competition now or developers fading out and tablets & 'APPS' taking over??

I have this program installed as well as their cleaner program. Same installer problem exists with it as mentioned in comment #3.

"Also although the install appeared to go well it failed to place a shortcut to the executable itself but only the uninstall shortcut. I had to navigate to the installed program files subfolder to find and run the executable BlackBirdSystemInfo.exe"

Not to go on about their cleaner program here but with the lack of a help file I contacted them and they were responsive on a couple of issues. No spam to report either.

A similar product I have used for years is Belarc Advisor. This is free, very informative and has never been a problem. I would suggest comparing the two, if you are interested in this type of software.

Reply   |   Comment by Reg Reed.  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+8)

Reg Reed., Their government is more republican (small "r") than the US. The people are genuine and sincere--unlike most Americans. They regard their laws more than Americans regard theirs. They are generally more religious. Every heard the one about glass houses?
Having said that, everything free on "Al Gore's" Internet includes collection and selling of your information. If that bothers you then take the appropriate steps. In all cases, you shouldn't be here even when you are.
Belarc is awesome and gratis.

The Captcha routine is becoming ridiculous. If you don't want comments, close this section.

proallen,

People visit this site to check out software deals, and have intelligent discussion about said software--not to listen to someone blather about their dogmatic political beliefs or read insults launched at one's country (I don't care which country).

Kindly take your rants to a different website; there are plenty where you'll feel at home. Try Youtube.

proallen, You've either lost your flipping mind or are so American-envious that you let your hatred cloud better judgement.

While the Ukraine is certainly not the worst of the worst, crime has gone mad and it's now compared by its own people as the new Chechnya. Ukrainians are amazing people, this isn't a slight against them (I have friends from there), but to make such a declaration as you have about the U.S. is beyond the absurd.

Most Americans are not genuine or sincere? Oh, so you've you met most Americans. Cool. Piss off left-wing hater.

Not really needed as Everest Home Edition (free) will tell you just about everything about your computer and it's internal components. And then you can also run Belarc Advisor (free) which will not only check for missing security updates, but will tell you what programs are installed along with Product Key and License Key information. So why would we need this program ? ?

Reply   |   Comment by bruce  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+32)

bruce, just wanted to say thank you. I downloaded Belarc Advisor and that is terrific! Appreciate the referral.

Installed with no problems on a Win7 Pro 64 bit HP Z1 workstation. Correctly reported 32GB RAM (Intel Xeon), etc., however, for the price, I don't feel it's worth it. I had to give my email address twice during the registration process. I've uninstalled it as I use Belarc Adviser (free for personal use) that reports much more information, including all Apps, network map, security vulnerabilities, HDD's and status (healthy, etc.)etc. It also does not need an email address or other identifiers.

When I try to run setup.exe my system say "Windows Protected Your PC"
Windows Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk.

Reply   |   Comment by Sobio Dude  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

Sobio Dude, I think unsigned executables may give that warning on the newer editions of Windows. I do not think it speaks much about the application itself; for better results, try scanning it with your antivirus, as anybody can sign an executable (if they have the moolah)

Reply   |   Comment by Nuvix  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

Sobio Dude, it's a pretty standard warning which will be given for many programs for many reasons. It will give it in general for programs when you run an installer straight from the zip, it will give it for software that is not downloaded enough for their databases to recognize it, it will give it when you start the installer before it could find any information, it will give it when it simply can't reach the databases (which has its own myriad of reasons)
I have it often with game mod packages which I know to be ok and very often with GOTD software. If you trust the download provider (in this case GOTD) you can ignore and run the program anyway (there should be a "more" link in the warning window which should give that option)

Hmmmmmmmmmm, incorrect information, ................... hastily written code ..........................email harvester/seller/spam generator for sure .............. tell me again why I need this on my system? From the screenshots alone I/you can tell this gives you the same , if not reduced, level of information that's already built in to your Windows installation. Just type "system information" in the search box and you will pretty much what you see here. If you MUST have a third party piece of software on your system for this kind of info, then get the ALWAYS FREE (and from a very respectable developer that's been around forever), SPECCY from Piriform. No not shilling for them, but hey, they do have the leading software in this department. And did I mention its always free?

Black Bird Cleaner Software (the Developer) seems to specialize in unnecessary and (some potentially harmful) paid software that's free from other vendors. Just Google them and see their wide variety of PAID (free) offerings. Sorry , but this (or anything from this developer) will not be on my machine.

Reply   |   Comment by indianacarnie  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+30)

Hi indianacarnie. :-)

"Just Google them and see their wide variety of PAID (free) offerings."

I found only two programs from this developer: "Black Bird Cleaner" and "Black Bird System Info".
Unlike other developers, they show their address, phone number and names (on a simple whois).
Both programs offer a free version and a paid version.

It says I have 447 Gigabyte Video card.... I WISH! :(

I wonder what other errors I will find?

Reply   |   Comment by Kiwi1960  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+59)

Kiwi1960, I had the same problem: on the summary the info for the video card and the hard drive are mixed up. I also noticed that it does not itemize external hard drives that are attached, it does not show webcam except as an audio device. So basically, there is really no advantage to this over what Windows can provide. I deleted the program and erased the zip and unzipped directories. Now I just have to wait for their spam and mark it as such and then I can forget about them altogether!
