I always use Ashampoo WinOptimizer Pro to Encrypt my Files/Folders I choose to Encrypt. It is Superior to all. Thanks anyway for this offer, and to the GOTD Team for their Comment.

Encrypted Vault is the way to go, not individual files or folders, because many times Win OS mistaken it for damaged file or folder. If you copy the encrypted files from NTFS drive to EXT 16(32) drive, an error occurs and the encryption is lost, also some software can not find the end of file mark and will re-load over and over into endless loop. Mixing encrypted files with regular files in the same folder, can also create unexpected errors.

If this is installed on two of my PC's can I take the encrypted files from one of these computers and read them on the other? (Otherwise if the hard drive crashes on the PC with the encryption the files will be lost).

The simplest thing you can do is; Place everything that has to do with your own documents, images and music on a memory stick. Worked on the PC done, switch off PC, remove memory stick, solved problem. You can even place programs that then work from the memory stick.

"... don't forget to encrypt the USB stick..."

The open source VeraCrypt can work portably on a USB stick/drive, creating / encrypting / decrypting a VHD, also on the USB stick / drive.

"... all someone has to do is pick your pocket..."

FWIW, microSD cards work as well, are much less obvious, & can be stored [&/or hidden] almost anywhere.

"... USB memory sticks are not reliable as a storage medium..."

VERY True. Many disk/partition image backup apps can back them up, which may be the safest route, but the way that their storage & partitioning works, restoring that backup will usually create a partition the same size as the original, and it is difficult, if possible, to resize that partition later. Restoring that backup to a hard disk also doesn't work in my experience. Another option, though less compact, is to use an SSD in a USB enclosure. Both 2.5" & NVMe SSDs are incredibly cheap nowadays, while USB drive housings can be found on sale starting ~$5.

krypteller, That memory stick that I use for that is a Sandisk Extreme Pro, is 238 GB in size, is a finger long and put in the front in a USB 3 input and works excellent and also correct. There is just about everything that is downloaded from the internet, also some programs.
