The quality of the pic is lower than Print Screen. Thanks GAOTD anyway :)

Have not installed today's software (thank to GAOTD, anyway!), but I can say that Greenshot is an excellent piece of freeware (even for corporate) - and has basic post-editing and obfuscation, which is a very nice little tweak to have. I'm sure would be easy to make portable, as someone always requests. * great discussion today, I must add! It's nice to know people feel strongly enough to care about fair and impartial ratings on GAOTD.

Why buy this crap for 14 dollars when you can achieve the same using PrtSc/SysRq button which captures the screenshot directly into your clipboard from which you can paste it in Paint or any Image editing program?

Man, this sounds more like work than a simplistic answer to using print screen. I've found a real good program called Gadwin Print Screen, and it uses the print screen key on your keyboard. You can select the size of the shot you want, plus you can save it to it's own folder as a gif, bmp or jpg file. You can also rename the file. There are two versions a paid one and a free one. The free one, which is the one I have, works great. You have the icon in the taskbar and only have to use the key on the keyboard as it integrates directly into the windows program.

Unable to Register. No activation key given in README file
or "Giveawayoftheday" accepted.

Surprised, after so many years GAOTD still unable to standardize activation procedure.

Using MagicScreenshot ( another GAOTD
offer , i think).

Downloaded and registered yesterday, closed computers, today still showing unregistered evaluation version. Tried again. Same. Rarely encounter this problem. It's a bad start, won't persist, esp when there are so many other worthy alternatives and we know rego can be smooth if organised.

Smooth download, installation, activation on Win-7, 32-bit. Simple GUI, easy-to-use program, does as it says & is reasonably priced at $14.95 compared with equally-capable paid alternatives. A definite 2-thumbs-up, and thanks to GOTD & Developer for today's nice offer.

Freeware Option:

SMRecorder Note: SMRecorder attempts to install Bing Toolbar and set web-browser homepage to Bing.com - but allows user to opt out of doing so.

SCREENDASH 2.1 is the best I have ever tried, all you do is captivate by using a sizer tool and then store it in one stroke, by opening up the shot you can easily resize it too.
This one is puzling and like many say although it is free, it is only a temporary version. Thanks but no thanks.

If I want a screenshot of a game that plays full-screen, I simply use a digital camera! With screenshot programs such as today's GOTD it would be very helpful to say under what circumstances it will do a screenshot, eg playing a video windowed, playing a video full-screen, or playing a game full-screen. Other than those, PrtScr will do the job without installing another program and places the full-screen image on the clipboard. Easy to paste and edit afterwards!

In regard to programs that ask for a toolbar or search engine or home page change, provided there's a checkbox to untick this should not present any problems. As a matter of good manners, it is best when these sort of checkboxes start up unticked!

As to the offer today...I have a free tool that works great and and gives me all i need when take screen shots. I did download and try it out but not going to keep it. I will use a FREE option or open-source program. Thanks for the offer and keep tuning and tweaking and you will have a really nice piece of work. The watermark is a nice idea you might want to try and gear more ideas towards the internet marketing and bloggers niche since they use tons of screen captures for their livelihood.

Thank you GAOTD for having this awesome site.

For those who need additional facilities over and above freeware screen capture, then today's GAOTD probably makes sense -- the auto capture, and the watermarking of captures, isn't common. However. . .

I do screen captures almost every day, whether it's an online bank transaction, or shopping purchase, or even stuff like filing my gas and electricity meter readings on line.

PrtSc is blatantly useless for that: I want to capture just part of the on-screen image, not the whole darned thing.

No doubt every GAOTD user will have her or his own favorite, but I've been using Wisdom Soft's Screenhunter for years. I open the app when starting a session (it's so light on resources, it can be left running anyway) and then use the hot key F6 to activate, at which point the mouse cursor turns into a frame grabber and you simply draw a rectangle as small or as big as you like. And, er, that's it. Image is saved to your chosen destination folder as a jpg or bitmap.

I've no particular issue with today's GAOTD other than the fact that it's overly complicated for the kind of usage needs I have -- and the image quality of the capture simply isn't as good in terms of definition as that from the freeware Screenhunter.

Not a keeper for me, but thanks anyway, GAOTD.

#37 - Dave: I'm afraid the vast majority of desktops do not have that function key (you must have an Apple or a laptop instead), but I find that the PrintScreen key on mine works just fine by itself, since all I have to do after that is start Paint and paste in the screen capture I just took using the PrintScreen key (In some cases you might be able to use clipboard instead of Paint, but it is much more limiting, I find.). There are some tutorials on the web, but it's really not difficult to do.

A terrific free and open source screen capture program is Greenshot. It supports full-screen, active window and defined region captures. You can have the capture go into a mini-editor that allows you to draw boxes, lines, insert text annotations, etc. on the captured image. A superior program that I use all of the time.

Thanks to Auto Screenshot Maker Soft and GOTD.
It registered easily though the "Enter Activation Code" was not removed from the scroll down menu under "Help" after registration. However the "Unregistered Version" was removed from the title bar - and changed to "Auto Screenshot Maker 3.0" after registration.

I configured this software to set the hotkeys and capture destination folder before testing and using.

Then proceeded to test it for single capture of "Selection" and save to file in folder of my choice.
Also tested it for auto capture of "Active Window" every 10 seconds to folder of my choice.

Result of test:
This is EXCELLENT.

It allows me to choose what program to open the saved single capture image. For me I chose ACDSEE-Quick-View. But the application could easily have been any other such as MsPaint or Microsoft Photo Editor or Phoxo or PhotoFiltre.

The auto save function at set intervals is good. It will have useful applications. You can choose to capture the active window or entire screen.

You can click on "Capture" in "Selection" mode as described by another comment contributor.

However, you can do the following when you are already in the screen that you wish to capture a region or part of: Press the hotkey combination for Selection capture. In my case, it is Ctrl-PrtScrn. Then simply left click your mouse on the top left corner of the region that you like to capture and pull to bottom right hand corner of the rectangle of the region. Release the mouse.
The region or "Selection" is captured to your chosen folder. In my case, I chose JPEG format instead of BMP or PNG. You can specify the prefix of the file name for captured image which are numbered sequentially by the program.

Please note that for auto-capture at timed intervals, the word "auto" is added to whatever prefix you have specified.

You can see the captured imaged by pressing your chosen hotkey e,g, "Alt-O" combination. Then it will open in your chosen application - in my case ACDSEE-Quick-View.

The output quality of the auto-save function is good. I chose 10 seconds interval but you can insert much longer, say for example, every 1000 seconds.

For those facing activation problems, remember to exit the software and don't forget to exit the one in your tray (bottom right hand corner of monitor near the clock). Then when you next open the program, it will be registered.

I will keep this AutoScreenshot Maker Version 3.0.

But for me, Snag-It which I have been using for many years, remains King of screen capture - Snag-It has video capture too and a powerful Snag-It Studio image editor. ( I do not have Camtasia )

By the way, please continue to offer screenshot capture software in GOTD. I missed out on Bandicam GOTD offer in Apr or May 2011 - forgot to download it.

Activate.exe == verifies the GAOTD "date", & sets up the registration data
Setup.exe == Auto Screenshot Maker Setup.exe

unregistered, your screenshots are watermarked

W7 x64
version 3.0

installs into directory of your choice, 5 MB, & looks clean

includes CHM help file

places an AutoScreenShotMaker.INI into \Windows, which is an extremely odd
place for it. (no big deal, just odd, & AFAICT only contains the output
path locations.)

hotkey (definitions) do not display on the Actions menu nor on any mouseover
(would be nice if they did)

some sort of indicator, visual & or audible would be nice when it takes a shot
(in particular with timed shots)

single capture is very limited in what it can do

the only "novelty" i see to this program, is it's timed captures, though i'm
just not sure what purpose it would serve?

if you type or paste a path into a capture Path dialog, & if you include the
trailing '/' then your input is not accepted. DUMB. by default, the path
does show a trailing /, but when you enter one, you're thwarted.

C:\OUT works, where C:\OUT\ does not!

no way to set output file "quality" (or any settings other then the choice
in file types; JPEG, BMP, or PNG)

as a "general purpose" screenshot capture program, it falls far short compared
to most other screenshot programs.

as far as a timed capture program, i'm not sure what else is out there?

easy to use, does what it says, just don't know what kind of value, or for
who it may be of value, of the timed shot feature?

@37 : Well if you do that , you have to paste the screenshot in paint(or another similiar program) and then save it.

With screenshot softwares you can easily take multiple screenshots without erasing the previous one.

And today's GOTD is very basic. I can and have coded an almost exact copy of this software when I was 14 years old

Here is a free option that doesn't require any download... or software. FCN + PRTSC. Hold down the function button and hit the Print Screen button on your keyboard. Duh! Most computers have that now. If you don't have that on your computer some place... your computer is probably too old and you should get a new one.

Without annotation/drawing features, this is just another me-too product, of which there are tens/hundreds of free ones. The only thing that makes this at all unique is that they make you pay to use it IRL.

Let's just say that this is not likely to replace Snag-It, any time soon.

Auto Screenshot Maker has some uncommon features for a screenshot capture tool, such as the abilities to take screenshots at intervals while discarding duplicates, add watermarks, generate Word documents with the images, and command-line captures. However, I didn't see any other notable features, and it doesn't appear to support the rounded window corners of Vista+, the ability to clear the Aero background, or capture the Aero shadow of the base window (except via capturing a larger area than the window). Those are very basic features which I would expect, that's saying nothing about much more sophisticated features.

I use TimeSnapper Pro to capture all of my activity. It has endless activity-tracking and viewing features, but documentation is scattered and incomplete. I have it set to capture at 2-second intervals, discarding duplicates. You have lots of options about what is captured and how it's saved. I like NTWind WinSnap for general captures, a new version with more abilities will be out soon. MicroInvention CrossGL SnapDraw is now free and is great for annotation, I haven't tested its capture abilities on Win7. The free FastStone Image Viewer is excellent for annotation, their commercial capture tool is also supposed to be pretty good.

GOTD could easily reduce vote manipulation via requiring users to log on like any decent forum. Users would register via a valid email address, GOTD could delete inactive accounts after 60 days. But the moderators edit and delete any posts which I make about such things. It would also help if users actually voted, almost no one does. And then there are all of the endless users who want everyone to read their comments while ignoring everyone else's.

THUMBS DOWN to this GAOTD, which seems to me a very basic screenshot maker and maybe good for amateurs or for kids only!!!

For sure it's not worth its price taking into account that there are plenty of better FREEWARE ALTERNATIVES out there!!!

The BEST one I've ever used till now is definitely a free and portable tool called "PICPICK", an awesome graphic capture tool with an impressive array of options such as its unique AUTOSCROLL CAPTURE feature, which enables users to capture entire websites or documents that scroll beyond the visible section of the screen.

That's COOL, isn't it dudes???

Sharing to FTP, Web, E-mail, Facebook and Twitter are supported as well!!

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Graphic/Graphic-Capture/Portable-PicPick.shtml

The non portable version can be downloaded here:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Graphic/Graphic-Capture/PicPick.shtml

Bloggers and webmasters, or just pc users who love to take and share online lots of screenshots on a daily basis, may find handy the following two FREE screen capture apps as well:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Graphic/Graphic-Capture/SnipSo.shtml

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Graphic/Graphic-Capture/TornadoCapture.shtml

Finally, if you are looking for a FREE APP capable of capturing and even recording your screen actions, then SUPERPICK 4.0 is the right tool for you:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Graphic/Graphic-Capture/Super-Pick.shtml

Enjoy & Prosper!!

Cheers from Italy!!

Please comment only on the software here. If you have technical problems or suggestions on our project, please leave us a note in our forums.

Regarding comments or suggestions related to voting - please post in the GOTD forums at http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/10920

Suggestions regarding how this site should operate, requests for upcoming giveaways, or comments of a general nature not related to the giveaway software may not be seen or acted upon by the people who can actually do what you suggest.

Yes it can be easier to just post in the comments - but it can be annoying to other users who want to read about the software, and pointless if your suggestions/comments are lost in comments spread across multiple days.

Most of us are not interested in yet another screenshot tool.

I'm not going to participate if I have to see a user spam post his rule book everyday. I was prevented from having my posts several times because one small paragraph or a sentence at the end mentioned the exact same concerns... if GAOTD wants to set those statements into it's page, fine. But I at least had some respect in my statement.

Downloaded fine, installed and activated OK on win 7 ultimate.

Works OK, but compared with some freeware I use (MWSnap), it's more limited.(MWSnap allows editing of the image, adding arrows etc if needed, within the program).

but it works, and may be useful for some, but there is a freeware version for $14.95 less than today's GAOTD.

So thank you, but uninstalled

#12 #18 #25 - If you leave the program running while you run Activate - it will display as still being unregistered. Internally it has registered - but the program will still display "Unregistered" until you restart the program.

Close the program by right clicking on the icon in the system tray and select "Exit" from the popup menu. Then restart the program again normally - and it will show as being registered.

Or when running Setup.exe - on the final screen when it asks if you want to Launch the program when setup has completed - unselect the check box. Or just restart windows - that will fix it also.

Program installed successfully and showed the program was activated upon running the "Activate" program, ... HOWEVER ... the program continues to display in the Title Bar of ASM ... it states as the "unregistered version".

Seems to install and activate fine however not sure about activation. As a full screen capture it's great for my purposes. However I seem to be unable to use other hotkey selection types especially regarding selected area captures. That'a a bummer cause I need selected area to work. As someone else mentioned above it has a good start but needs some tweaks to be really good. Not much use to me just as a full screen capture. I will keep it through the gaotd and see if anyone has a similar problem and found a solution.
