Dear AOMEI Team,

I created a boot disk with AOMEI Backupper Pro 5.3, and my computer (win 10 64 bit) does boot off this disk, but my mouse does not work in this mode, and I cannot press any buttons, be it Recover or Clone, and I even can't close the window or shut down my computer. I am forced to turn off my machine manually.

Would you be kind enough to give me some advice on how to solve this issue.

I love your backuppers, have had no issues with booting from recovery disks in the older versions.

Your help will be much appreciated.

Best Regards,

consuella

I downloaded it but failed to install it because I kept getting this message

Setup was unable to create the directory "C:\ProgramFilesx86\AOMEI Backup" even after disabling all Antivirus Software! I reported this to the GOTD Support Forum but did not get an answer before the offer expired! So I lost out on a grat offer.

I would not create a complete backup of my OS whilst windows is running (especially W10).
Can we create a bootable CD, and USE THAT CD to do ALL of the following -
1) Create an image of the OS (Windows NOT running)
2) Verify/Validate the image
3) Restore the image

Rob Crombie, yes you can. With AOMEI bootable CD or flash drive you can do all that in WinPE

Yes, it only can be used for one year.

AOMEI, I wonder if this is why the 4.02 version I previously downloaded here didn't function when I tried to use it last night. Got to love a backup progarm (or any other) that doesn't work when you need to use it.

Downloaded it.....put it on my Win7 Dell.......did not load properly...hung up and locked my system.......then could not do a system restore without going through multiple different methods........Chrome would not work, and had to uninstall it and reinstall it. was a bad idea on my part.

Neuron,

It seems that the previous failed to be uninstalled completely. Please try to delete the registry items of AOMEI Backupper, and then install it again.
Please check the following items:

1. If AOMEI Backupper folder still exists in the installation directory, please manually delete it (generally, it is under C:\Program Files (x86)). To do this, you need to close ABService.exe under Progress via Windows Task Manager. For closing it, you might first need to stop “Backupper Service” under Services in Windows Task Manager. You can press Ctrl-Alt-Delete from anywhere and you’ll see a link to start Task Manager. You can also right-click the taskbar and select “Task Manager.”

2. You also need to check and delete something in Registry. Please press Win+R to open run box, then type into "regedit" in the box labeled to "Open" Registry.

(1)Locate the following and delete them:

For 32 bit system:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\AOMEI Backupper

For 64 bit system:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\AOMEI Backupper

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\ambakdrv

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\ammntdrv

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\amwrtdrv

(2) Locate the following path, and then delete the "amreboot" value.

For 32bit system:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

For 64bit system:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

(3)Locate the following path, and then select and rightclick "UpperFilters"-->Modify-->delete the "ambakdrv" value. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{71A27CDD-812A-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}

Won't install on Win7. I click on Install Now and get this: "Setup has detected a restart required to perform the uninstall. Please restart and try again." I have 4 times plus a cold bootup. What uninstall? Redownloaded the program and unzipped it. Same result. Installed on my Win10 PC OK. Any ideas?

AOMEI, It's a little late now since the GAOTD offer has expired. Furthermore, none of the above Registry items was found. Before the offer expired, I even tried to install the Standard Version of Backupper and it came up with the same "Setup has detected...." It appears that I cannot install any AOMEI product.

I created a boot disk for my win 10 64 bit machine.

The computer does boot off this disk, but my mouse does not work in this mode, and I cannot press any buttons, be it Recover or Clone. What's even worse, is that I cannot close the window. So I have to manually power off the computer. Tested the recovery disk twice, but the issue persists.
AOMEI may work well for some users, but it don't for others. I will stay away from AOMEI.

Nevertheless, if you created recovery/boot disk, make sure to test it. Otherwise you might be for a major disappointment when the disaster hits, and you would not be able to recover your backup.

Installed and registered with no hassles. When it launched 1st time immediately started a backup of OS volume without prompting me where I wanted the backup to go. Going into Settings>Advanced, there's no option to tell AOMEI where to save it. In Notifications tried to send a test to my email but it failed with no explanation. We'll see what other surprises there are as I audition this backup solution.

You can check the "Home"-"Properties" of the backup task so you can check where you store your backup image.
About the email notification fails, please upgrade to the newest version of Backupper and check again.
Any other problems, you can also contact AOMEI Support.

I have been using AOMEI for a few years now making a full image backup once every week. Just as well I did as recently my laptop refused to boot into Win 10 I inserted the AOMEI CD recovery disk was able to access the external HDD containing the image file and within 60 mins had completely restored my laptop to its previous state
Thankyou AOMEI !

I could not get Macrium to work, I forget why, but use Exiland (from GAOTD) with no trouble. Only it takes a long time, but perhaps that is because I clone instead of zipping. Exiland answered my initial problems (years ago) with no trouble and were very helpful.

If there is no such button, it means the program has been registered automatically.
The program would retain the registration information automatically.

AOMEI Backupper is rock solid. It saved me a couple of times from a total disaster. I believe the PRO version has a "universal" feature which allows restoring to different hardware which is wonderful. Their support has been excellent as well.
My only complaint is a previous GAoD offering of this was supposed to be lifetime and it was not.

I have AB Pro 4.0.2 from way back. It still works (Lifetime? not sure if it is GOTD version) . I do not want to update it for fear of it downgrading to 1 year version!

senzai6293,

In my case your tip did not work, because every time I pressed the NO button and proceeded to install this version, the installer kept popping up again and again the small window asking if I want to uninstall the older version, and I pressed the NO button, it would not install the new version without first uninstalling the previous version.

I am currently using a free version of AOMEI Backupper Pro that I got from GotD and which I've been using for the past three or more years. Are there any reasons that I should switch to this version that's good for only one year?

Reply   |   Comment by Frank D  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

The previous version is a 'lifetime' version, which you'll have to remove to install this '1 year' version.
So don't do it.
There are probably improvements, but the core of the program (creating an image) hasn't changed.

This is only of benefit if you've not tried AOMEI before. It is, after all, a 1 year trial. Its not even 'shareware' with nags. In one year it will be unusable.

I also have (had v4.6.2) Pro, which was unlimited in license.

I made the mistake of installing this version WHICH IS NOT lifetime.

My bad.

You on the other hand should keep your logic to yourself as it is faulty.

Please note: the offer includes only 1-year license!!!!

Does that mean that after only 1 year AOMEI Backupper Pro stops working and all my backups become useless?

How to go around the 1 year limited icense and extend the AOMEI Backupper Pro function to unlimited?

Reply   |   Comment by Magnolia  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+8)

frank, Wrong.
The free version is always a version (or minor version) below the real version, so when you come to restore, you cannot use v4 to read a v5 image, or even v5.1 to read a v5.2 image.
The full version can read a free version image (backwards compatible) but not the other way round.

Magnolia, after 1 year, it reverts back to the Standard Edition.

Have a comparison table here:

If you want a unlimited license, you 'll have to buy it ofc, they offer different Editions, depending on your needs, those are all listed in the link given.

Because of the difficulty making rescue disk, I am tired of it.

I am trying with Ashampoo backup, and hope I never have to use it, but if I had to I will see how it goes.
I have also installed macrium reflect free. Again, time will tell... I never know if there is one program that I can truly depend upon.

I have a question about the expiration of the license. On gaotd it is 1 year license, what in my understanding will say, that it expires completely or turns into trial after one year. As far as clear, but when I go to AOMEI's website, I see no 1 year license, but a Current License, a Lifetime License and a Business License. The Current License, which has the price of $39.95 is definded as follows: "Valid for the current version you're buying and paid upgrade to later new version". For me that doesn't sound like 1 year, but that this version 5.3 will work forever, without upgrades/updates. It would be very helpful to get the some information, whether it is 1 year specially for the gaotd version, or the Current License. Many thanks in advance.

Reply   |   Comment by danceasy  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+16)

danceasy,
In my understanding, if you have a backup utility installed on your system and backed up your computer, then as long as you have that same version software (or later) installed on a portable device or USB ... Then say in 3 years wanted to restore that backup it should still work! Whether it is a periodical, incremental or adhoc backup... It should restore the backup same as it was at the time of backup!

Reply   |   Comment by Vinny D.  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-8)

Vinny D.,

That may well be your "understanding". But when it comes to disaster recovery, your "understanding isn't helpful.

Can SOMEONE from AOMEI explain how the license works for the GOTD version of Backupper?

Reply   |   Comment by casper improved  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+7)

danceasy,

As I understand it, according to this page purchasing today's Pro version 5.3 (priced here at $39.95) would include updates to version 5.x only; whereas the $49.95 price in that comparison table (with the "Lifetime Upgrades" box checked) includes unlimited version updates/upgrades (5.x, 6.x, 7.x, etc.):

https://www.ubackup.com/edition-comparison.html

It seems worth the additional $10.

I wish they offered a home/non-business multi-machine license (say, 3 computers) priced the same as their business-use single workstation license, making the cost/machine reasonable.

Reply   |   Comment by HMarx  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Vinny D., Sorry Vinny D., but your answer has absolutely nothing to do with my question, that anyway only could be answered by gaotd or Aomei. The point is, that the 1 year license offered here does not appear on the purchase page of Aomei, but for $39.95 (the same as for this gaotd offer) you get a so called Current License which is valid, how the name says, for the current version, without upgrades, in this case 5.3. My logic tells me, that this would not be a 1 year license, but - much better - an unlimited license for 5.3. Capisci? But, like mentioned before, this question would have to be answered by gaotd.

danceasy,

As casper improved posted: "Can SOMEONE from AOMEI explain how the license works for the GOTD version of Backupper?"

Past giveaway offers for AOMEI software never expired -- I had a couple for years -- but the GOTD Backupper giveaway from earlier this year and today's GOTD both added the 1year disclaimer.

"Then say in 3 years wanted to restore that backup it should still work! "

For a disk/partition image to be useful it should be done MUCH more frequently than once however many years. To me, valuable data should be backed up immediately, while Windows 10 gets backed up at least twice monthly, once after each round of patching.

Pity this is just the year license as it's a great bit of software. I've been using the free version for a few years now and it's easy to set up and use, seems to do what it sets out to. If this pro version is sufficiently more functional I may well end up buying a license.

Unlike the Ashampoo offering last week at least this one allowed me to register and log in! So this is definitely one to check out if you're after a backup suite.

The now defunct Treepad/Freebyte had a very simple free backup programme.
Treepad disappeared this summer, but thanks to the WayBack Machine on https://web.archive.org I could download it just now from their last snapshot, dated July 23, 2019:

https://web.archive.org/web/20160820100021if_/http://www.freebytesoftware.com/download/fbbackup.zip

The Freebyte Backup programme is very simple, but does what it promises.

My Favorite backup solution. System restore is what I choose always. The program is quite intuitive; the more I use it and become familiar with it's quirks, don't mind doing part of it's work manually. Has never failed me, as with other products from Aomei. Other programs haven't done squat,( even Acronis), in comparison!

Andy Percox,
System restore will restore something that has gone wrong or disappeared, but what if and when system restore packs up with everything else (as happened to me once)? Wisecare 365 did no end of damage including disabling system restore.

This completely destroyed my computer. While doing a restore, the whole thing went blank and the computer couldn't be restarted ... had to send to Dell for repairs.
Creating rescue disk is a major problem.
If there are safer backup programs, don't touch this one.

drvajra,

"Creating rescue disk is a major problem."

4 or 5 years ago I tested the bootable USB sticks you create with AOMEI Backupper, and found it wouldn't work on one of my devices. They've changed & improved the way those USB sticks are created since then, so it may be worth another try if you like the software GUI & options, which of course is up to you.

"If there are safer backup programs, don't touch this one."

All of the better known disk/partition image backup apps are safe -- there's just not that much involved in copying raw data from disk to backup archive, and back. Where they differ is in added features, speed, and the usually WinPE-based bootable USB sticks that they can create. You do Absolutely have to Test ANY backup solution on the hardware you want to use it with, rather than leave it up to luck whether it'll work when you need it. That includes the drive or media where you'll store those backup archive.

"Clearly you are blaming AOMEI for YOUR failure!"

" I've been using this for years on a weekly basis, NOT ONE SINGLE PROBLEM so look somewhere else for your failure"

If there was Any user failure it was in not testing beforehand.
The biggest weakness with disk/partition image backup software, as well as partitioning software, is the bootable USB sticks the software creates. There are Lots of potential issues because each make & model of device has it's own, unique BIOS. And many [most?] of those BIOS can use legacy or UEFI booting, or some combination of the two, so what works with one device may not work with another. As above, external USB drives used to store backups are also a Very Common point of failure.

drvajra, idk what version you were using but the program received fastillions of updates since it's initial version number.

I'm not saying the program wasn't the culprit but you should also reconsider and maybe give it a new try, due it having been updated so often.

senzai6293, As suggested by you, I gave it a try. I tried to make a Windows PE UEFI bootable dvd and clicked on 'download Win PE environment...". After 99% it ejects the disk. Does not complete 100%.

This has been a problem with AOMEI... I thought they must have fixed it... apparently not.
Do have any suggestions?

David Coutts, run the setup, it should ask, if you want to uninstall your current version, it also asks if you want to keep your registration info, select NO and proceed uninstalling/re-installing.

NB: If you had a previous version registered, it may have been picked up by todays offer (the license that is, so you didn't need to register), so check if your current license is limited or lifetime before you proceed with the above.

I too didn't have to register after installing todays offer (i'd assume i wrecked my lifetime license) and re-installed, including removal of the existing license.

So think twice.

Ryszard Wojdowski,

I regret having this version install, remove my previous (v4.6.2) and install this one (v5.3). I *think* v4.6.2 that was offered last May was a "works" forever, but support ends at one year release for GOTD.

This one appears to stop at one year, and the options for the actual application are limited in comparison to the previous release (I think) as the interface is completely different, and there is a sells plug at the bottom that says "-> Get lifetime version with a biggest discount"

If you (like me had v4.6.2) installed the previous, I would KEEP the older version. I don't think that one actually dies at the one year mark where this one likely will.

Reply   |   Comment by casper improved  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

Ryszard Wojdowski,

I forgot to add that at the completion of the install, this web page was pop'd to:

https://www.ubackup.com/install-abprorecommend.html?rec=qd_yjc_gotd

Which ALSO makes me think licensing for "Pro" version of this defaults to the 30 day trial version after one year. Unlike the version previously installed (v4.6.2).

I've tried other backup and restore software, including Macrium, and Aomei is the only one that's consistently worked. It employs "hot backup" meaning it performs the back up while the OS (Windows) is running. There's no need to exit the OS then boot into the backup software, making it easy for the average user. This company has been around a while meaning the software is mature, they have an extensive website with helpful tips and their customer support is responsive. Recommended.

shegeek72,

"I've tried other backup and restore software, including Macrium, and Aomei is the only one that's consistently worked."

Now That's surprising. Seriously, that's the 1st time I've ever read of Macrium Reflect Free not working [I've used it probably thousands of times now]. Hmmmm...

"It employs "hot backup" meaning it performs the back up while the OS (Windows) is running. There's no need to exit the OS then boot into the backup software, "

Just FWIW, I'm not aware of any of the major brands of backup software that cannot do a *hot* backup -- since VSS appeared in Vista AFAIK they all use it. That said, I've found the backup archives are slightly smaller if you clear out the temp folders, delete any system restore data, boot to another copy of Windows, delete the pagefile.sys & swapfile.sys files for the copy of Windows you're backing up, and then perform a disk or partition image backup.

Last week I had to restore an old backup (1 month ago) because my notebook did not start anymore. I had installed Aomei Backupper 5.2 from a previous Gaotd offer, but I had a lot of difficutiles to create the Aomei PE bootable pendrive.. With another notebook, I had to download Windows ADK software (2.5 Gbytes) to create a bootable pendrive.. And with my big susprise, after the notebook booted from this Aomei PE pendrive, I had to enter the Licence Key of Aomei Backupper gaotd version.. but the key was entered a few months ago and I could not recover it.. in few words: I lost all my work. Luckily I also had an older Macrium backup, and the bootable pendrive of Macrium free has worked. So I skip today program as long as Aomei ensures the easy creation of a recovery pendrive, as Macrium does.

I just don´t understand why you guys insist on the pendrive.
I use Easeus Todo Backup FREE wich allows to be installed in the master partition, giving me a 5 seconds window to either boot normally or go to my external HD, where I have my backups.
I presume this "PRO" software should have the same option...

Emir, I may be wrong, but I´d say there´s a good chance your OS may not be bootable, but the MBR will still boot, therefore giving you the option to recover...
In any event, does this software have "PreOS"?

Robert P.,

"I had a lot of difficutiles to create the Aomei PE bootable pendrive.. With another notebook, I had to download Windows ADK software (2.5 Gbytes) to create a bootable pendrive."

Unfortunately Microsoft won't let any of the software companies distribute the files for WinPE -- it's only available as part of a huge download -- so your experience isn't that uncommon. Several disk/partition image backup apps will nowadays use Win10's Recovery partition instead [including *I think* AOMEI], which makes it not so bad.

"after the notebook booted from this Aomei PE pendrive, I had to enter the Licence Key of Aomei Backupper gaotd version."

I had come across that with earlier versions... I always save a text file with the AOMEI key in the app's folder. It's Important to test USB boot sticks -- they often won't work -- so it was never a big deal... just rebooted back into Windows, copied the key, booted to the USB stick & entered it. Once I did that the USB stick continued to be registered.

Reply   |   Comment by mike  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Robert P., the user interface might be too simple. There is no utility to create a bootable media like most other programs (Easeus, Macrium). Reading the manual, I only find a short note: "If you can’t boot into windows to run the program for the restore, you can create WinPE bootable media of AOMEI Backupper in advance, and then boot from WinPE media to do restore". I find this a very primitive explanation for an essential functionality.

Reply   |   Comment by Sean  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

Robert P.,
We will optimize the problem after. Maybe you can try to use AOMEI PE Builder to create WinPE, which will integrate AOMEI Backupper automatically. You can download the tool from here: https://www.aomeitech.com/pe-builder.html?ref=en.nav.utilities
