The contact pack is the same.
The key you received on Nov 27 2011 allows you upgrade Animated _Wallpaper_ Maker for free.

Today offer would give you key for Animated Screensaver Maker

Unfortunately, no. Both version share some registry keys. So it wouldn't be possible.

Well, it is nice, but simply the same with wallpaper maker, just different output file as this produce .scr instead of .exe. This maybe useful to anyone who doesn't have the wallpaper maker yet. I think it's very versatile.
to #12, i activate my animated wallpaper, hiding the icons, and use my screen capture program to turn it into an .avi video, which i can use in my personal projects or turning it into my screensaver. Sadly, you cannot activate any program while in screensaver mode or it'll change into active desktop,eh?

Thank You, DeskTop Paints!Hope you offer extensions!

Hi GAOTD:), just as well my previous 2 Comments are still sitting in limbo. I've been talking naturally about versions of Animated Wallpaper Maker! (duhhh), and Today's Giveaway is Screensaver Maker, oh LOL, must be that blinding (in UK) first real snow blizzard:)

Well, same Samples, same Tools, same Pack(?)..
Installed using Reg Key given when purchasing DP Extension Pack for AWM, seemed to work. To be honest Wallpaper Maker makes more sense, at least (if it must:) something is moving on Desktop while other work goes on without interruption.
Thanks.

this looks like a fun thing to play with! sadly i dont use animated screensavers tho. :(
i will wait and hope that DP Animation Maker comes up on GOTD, and also hope it has a great side offer like the DP Extension Pack offer. :)

1 question, and i assume one that applies to all 3 programs... for the animations themselves, can you import or use your own pictures as well, or only use what comes with the program or that you buy in the add-ons? for me that might be the difference in rather i used this program at all, either free or payed.

and a suggestion... it would really need .png support! (i didnt see this format listed anywhere)

and a last comment... i LOVE that an actual developer, or at least someone connected with the program, is willing to answer customer questions here!!! :D

thanks GOTD and DesktopPaints!

Hi again:) - if I may add something else to my previous Post (still awaiting moderation it seems) - I forgot to add that when the last time ASM was released (27 Nov last year) I have purchased DP Extension Pack and received this e-mail:

"Thank you for purchasing "DP Extension Pack" at www.desktoppaints.com

This purchase comes with a free full license for Animated Wallpaper Maker.

Your personal key for this program is (...)
Please enter it into the registration window to upgrade your GOTD license.

To extend your copy of Animated Wallpaper Maker with addidional animations, please follow the steps below:

1. Download DP Extension Pack from https://www.trialpay.com/downloads/(...)
2. Install it on your computer" --------------------------------------

But today looked closer into description of it on DesktopPaints Site:

"Did you know?
Every month we create new tools or animations and issue a new upgrade for Animated Screensaver Maker. Since you are only an owner of a Giveaway of the Day license, you will miss all of these exciting novelties. However, there is a way to get a full license for free. If you order DP Extension Pack, we will send you a free permanent key for Animated Screensaver Maker. This key allows you to reinstall and upgrade the program without any limitations.."

Is TODAY'S Extension Pack any different to one I've purchased on Nov 27 2011, and (by my understanding) does it entitle me to FREE upgrades of this Software (and Packs!) anyway?
So far I resisted updates being aware it's a GAOTD after all..

Thanks in advance for Response.

I DID have the animated wallpaper giveaway, but my hard drive died monumentally so this was a good opportunity to grab a close equivalent to it.
Installed absolutely fine on Win7 x64. Activated and loaded no problems.
The only complaint I do have is that thus far I do not seem to be able to make 'all' the effects work in the animations department. Whether this is me being a noob or what I don't know. That said, I still think this is a pretty good program all told. Thanks for the giveaway GOTD!

@23: "common_res.dll" is not a driver of any kind. I kept an eye out on the file writing stage of the installation and that file is indeed created by the setup. I'm betting it's a support file for any screensavers you create, and since screensavers usually goes somewhere in the Windows folder (terrible design for any 3rd party software to install in the Windows folder, BTW), it makes sense to put common resources there.

Also, for the updater, it's probably some random feature offered by the newfangled installer maker the developer uses. Don't know if it actually does anything.

For many regulars on here, their acquaintance with the delightful YoWindow animated weather app will likely pique their curiosity in today's offering. It certainly did with me, even though I don't use 'screensavers' because they went out with the Ark -- or at least, the CRT monitor.

Good points about DesktopPaints' app:

1. Clean, fast, easy download, no sneaky add-ons; click 'Setup' and run the app first before clicking 'Activate'and that's it, no fuss;

2. Excellent GUI: clean, intuitive, and well thought-out;

3. Small but enjoyable range of pre-loaded 'projects' -- I take the point made by Dave H at post #15 but it's not entirely fair: I populated 'my' Aquarium with nicely animated goldfish, an option that's the last one in the add-to list;

4. Surprisingly good user-chooser control of a wide variety of parameters: beneath its deceptively simple hood there's quite a lot to make use of here, including positioning and intensity / speed of different effects;

5. Worked unexpectdly well on a seris of my own images of lakes and mountains, where the reflection 'horizon' is controllable and the addition of the fog effect actually made it seem like the clouds were coming down and rolling across the landscape.

Not so good:

The app works in foreground only; the only time I found the background to be affected was by the introduction of lighting effects or, as mentioned above, using the fog effect to make it appear the background was animated like the foreground.

Unfortunately for me though, the biggest problem was the program's unreliability. That isn't levelled as a criticism, because no two computers are going to be configured the same way nor be loaded with the same files and software. But in my case, the app simply wouldn't save any project: the 'preview' displayed perfectly in my 22" widescreen LCD but exiting led to black-out and lock-up.

I spent some time trying to work around this but to no avail, so, reluctantly, had to uninstall -- which was where the second problem arose: the uninstall didn't work well at all. Again, this could most likely be a reflection of a conflict between the app and my Vista OS desktop PC but whatever the reason, one error after another occurred including the uninstaller's reporting of its inability to delete the software's own HKEY-CURRENT-USER registry entry. It also raised queries about whether or not to unsintall some DLLs that were attributable not to DesktopPaints but something called Thraex Software.

I used RevoUninstaller to create a restore point and then ran both moderate and deep scans to clear everything, but as I suspected that hadn't happened -- because Revo, though good, is by no means infallible -- I then used jv16Powertools to run a full registry scan, as a result of which a couple of dozen left-overs from Animated ScreenSaver Maker were found as well as two registry keys. (Incidentally, the use of *any* registry cleaner is NOT recommended unless you know what you're doing.)

Working through jv16Powertools detailed list of files and entries it was possible to determine which, if any, were system critical. None were (including that referred to by fredward at post #23.)

With that task completed, I re-booted twice and all's well.

Verdict? I'm not going to be too critical of this software because it's quite ambitious, is attractively presented and it's clear that a lot of effort has gone into it. But I get the feeling that it's a product whose potential is still being developed, and though its 'projects' seem fine, the foreground-only animation means it's not yet fully capable of animating imported images from a user's own camera.

The software's crashing was unfortunate, and the hiccoughs with the uninstaller and references to the mysterious Thraex Software not exactly encouraging, but there's yet to be an app which works out-of-the-box on every computer in the world and as whatever conflicts occurred in my case have done no damage, well, I guess I'm perhaps just a bit unlucky here.

Thanks, then, to GAOTD and to DeskTopPaints; in current form, the app isn't for me but that's not to say that many others will have a problem-free experience and enjoy the surprisingly good variety of manageable effects and projects which Animated Screensaver Maker provides.

Hi, I have been using ASM v.3.01 since Dec last year, if I'm not mistaken about exact Release of that version.

I did managed today to find this entry from Blog Section of DesktopPaints .., pity it's not more obvious on Home Page!?

"January 23, 2012

We are proud to announce that new versions of Screensaver, Wallpaper, and Animation Makers were released today.

This update contains only one major change: The animated water brush was added. With this powerful tool you can animate almost any water surface on your pictures or photos." -------------------------------

Now, since version I already have (3.0.1) had been successfully used by me (especially for creating Snow Globes ready for Christmas:), and naturally following every update in hope it's better and reacher(!) in new Features - My question to DesktopPaints would be this:

Can I receive this new Version 3.0.3 but to be on the safe side(!) install it into different direction, AND still being able to keep and use 3.0.1 - to perhaps decide later which one "serves" me better?

My caution doesn't necessarily mean I'm Software Junkie, lol, and will keep anything..
So many times by updating we find out later we are disappointed and wished we kept older Version (as well), where everything worked perfectly..

I would like to make my own choice, so simple yes/no the 2 versions can/cannot exist alongside. Thanks:)

BTW - I don't use Screensavers on daily basis, but find ASM creative and Fun:). Truly!

To #26 - I would only add that a screensaver does not actually consume resources if it is SAVING THE SCREEN. :) If it's working then you are not! What's the problem? Resources? Windows can hardly access the available memory today's MB's offer (such as accessing all cores - not with XP!); resources are just not a problem anymore, just as screensavers are not 'functional' in that they save nothing except your eyes from boredom when they look at a screen no one is using.
This was offered before I believe, and it does what it claims to, puts some animation effects on an image; period. Nice idea, nice results.

This is a false positive detection.
It happens some times because antivirus software try to predict
unknown threats, but they cannot achieve 100% accuracy.

You can submit the file to www.virustotal.com service and you will see
that about 40 antivirus programs don't find threats in it.

We will contact Symantec support team with this issue.

Screensavers were useful for CRT monitors, LED or LCD lit monitors can be damaged by constant on or off or they can interrupt your work if reading long texts by assuming you are inactive.
These days, the screensavers have morphed into entertainment movies or still pictures or slide shows. Good to amuse kids.
The name screensavers is misleading, they do not save anything but consume large part of your system resources and slow down your system by constantly working in the background and take time slices of your CPU.

Big Problem: I went to the DesktopPaint Website. I paid $7.99 and proceeded to to download the DP Extension Pack + free lifetime license for Animated Screensaver Maker for just $7.99.

Upon download, Norton AntiVirus Red Flagged it! Warning Risk Impact: HIGH - Contains: WS.Reputation.1

NOTE: It's not todays GOTD that Norton flags... but the &7.99 DP Extension Pack + free lifetime license. It halts the download and removes the downloaded file from my system. I am unable to download. I could disable Norton but that defeats the purpose. Proceed with extreme caution. It seems I may be out $7.99 Grrrr. I sure hope DesktopPaint will reply with a solution.

Simple, yet works fine and does what claims.
No installation issues on 64bit Vista.

Yes I have and seen better, though that is not what we are rating.

The facts are again:
It does as claimed, it's free, and spyware and adware free. (other then the offer to add effects) A worthy compromise for what is not taking money out of ones pocket.

Tested on XP SP3 (Win 7 64bit is down still)

I had some indigestion with a few files

This first one makes network connection noises and I can't turn it off with any checkbox inside the program | Prefferences/Settings | autoupdates off. Considering I don't get free updates as a TESTER on gotd, would be nice to be able turn it off. I think also if I was a paid user, I would like the same ability.

"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Thraex Software\AutoUpdator\AutoUpdator.exe" /silent /author "DesktopPaints.com" /program "Animated Screensaver Maker"

(renamed to *.ex and vice versa auto update on/off)

The other one was when trying to uninstal it asked if I Had no more applications that use

c:\windows\system32\common_res.dll

I consider a graphic driver as a semi important file as far as production goes. So I wonder what else uses it out there? For the record I kept the file mostly because the name somehow sounds familiar. The size at 30 MB is enought to keep me from really looking too much farther than the edges with a hex editor. Part of some SDK?

the app itself successfully produced a working .scr file for me, and so it gets a thumb up from me even though I found what I considered annoyances about things.

Sadly, I haven't used a screensaver since 1996.

It is better to use a bacground that fits you screen resolution (1600 x 900 in your case) or check the streach bacground option in the screensaver settings dialog.

>And will there ever be an option to save the result as an avi which I could use in projects?

Thanks for offering this to us GOTD users

Installed and activated on Win7 64bit with no problems. Did not have to run as administrator.

At first sight the options seem limited and basic, until you find the add animation option in the file menu.

Lots of good animations, the only one I didn't like is the fish which are drawn still images that are just moved around the screen. Would like to see some better rendered fish added.

I would also like to see the option to add video to the screen saver, e.g. an .avi .mov .xvid etc.

Lastly an option to add sounds other than MP3 would be nice.

Thanks again.

Loved the ease of use in the creation of the animations and effects. You can choose to have a step-by-step wizard which makes the whole thing effortless. You can also download more examples at the press of a button and then unzip. There are a great number of animation effects included like fog, rain, snow, lightning bolt, bubbles, falling leaves, light rays, magic dust, butterflies, fish, etc. You can also import objects snd effects such as flowers and glitter brushes to include in your screensaver.

Desktoppiants, could you please tell me how to set the screensaver so it shows full screen on my wide-screen laptop? It has a resolution of 1600 x 900. And will there ever be an option to save the result as an avi which I could use in projects? I wouldn't mind paying extra for this.

I think the Animated Screensaver Maker is fun and creative and I look forward to playing around with it more.

#6 - @hipgabby: If you scroll to the very top of the GAOTD page, you'll notice that it reads:

"Giveaway of the Day - Animated Screensaver Maker 3.03"

I may be jumping to conclusions, but I believe the "3.03" is most likely the version number of the software that's being offered here today.

All sarcasm aside, I also have version 2.3.2 which I downloaded from GAOTD the last time it was offered. I would have to assume that since the version being offered is version 3 (which normally signifies that it is a "major update" if DesktopPaints follows standard protocol when it comes to assigning version numbers) then there are likely some significant changes in the new version when compared to the older one.

I'm going to go ahead and download it and let it over-write the old installation. If you want to keep the old install intact, you may be able to install today's offering in a different directory, thus retaining the install of version 2.3.2 until you make a decision on which you would rather keep. (This may or may not work, depending on whether the installation involves registry keys or not.)

I don't believe we still use "screensaver". Nowadays any screen can sleep and screensaver does NOT save anything, it actually KILL (shorten its life) the screen, put a hole in user pocket (electricity cost) and destroy the environment.

#2 Sukibabe - Desktop Paints gave away their animated wall paper maker recently. When you get used to making your animations, you want more and more and more animations. The extension packs are for people, like me who become addicted to playing with this program, who want better animations that really draw attention to your screen. I can't stand a stationary wall paper any more. The latest extension pack, which I bought last week has animals and wildlife. I can see that this company is putting a lot of effort in to making their animations look even better all the time.
The Pros and con's
PROS:
1. It's brilliant for a novice. Easy to understand and figure out.
2. I made a mistake by deleting the activation key when I bought the extension pack. The customer service are really helpful and reply almost immediately.
CONS: Their animations aren't in 3D yet.

I have thanked Desktop Paints for this great toy. I think it's only fair to give them a positive rating on GOTD. The people giving THUMBS DOWN are probably competition.

I already have version 2.3.2 downloaded from the last GOTD giveaway of this software. Is this the same version? I don't see on their website anywhere what version they're offering this time. Don't want to download the same one I already have. Can anyone tell me if this is an updated version or not? Thanks! The 2.3.2 version has been fun, if limited, but made some nice animated screensavers. Works fine on Windows XP SP3, no problems thus far on this version.

Loaded easily on XP-3 and Vista machines with a clean install that did not offer or try to add any pesky tool bars, etc.

As with most offerings that have an activation file... at the end of the initial installation, un-check the "start software" and "FAQ", run the activation and then start the program.

Although both machines have a decent graphic card and plenty of RAM, the presentation was 'jerky' on the XP machine, but quite smooth on the Vista. All in all, I will keep this until something better comes along... thanks!

Could someone clarify this please???

When I clicked on the link to Extension pack the above came up, however, in reading the whole page it is saying you have to buy the "Nature Pack", which is 9.99
Which one is it and how long do I have to purchase it???

When I clicked to buy it says nothing about the free license!

I like the Wallpaper Maker DesktopPaint gave a few months ago, so i'll give a shot on this.
I'll comment more once it's up and running.

As for why people can give so many thumbs and comments while it's still midnight,i probably know.
GOTD has many guests, even from different time areas. Me, as the example. To me, new Giveaway appears everyday at 3 PM, right at the time i get home from school.
Still, manyh people do abuse it.
