Every day we offer FREE licensed software you’d have to buy otherwise.
xStarter was available as a giveaway on February 16, 2007!
xStarter will help you to automate each and every process in your computer. Automate operations on schedule, or on a keypress or via various events (windows event log changes, file/folder modifications, signals from an TCP/IP, RS232 port, etc.)
Here are just a few examples of what xStarter can do for you: The program can start/stop processes and services, send keys to applications or play pre-recorded macros imitating a real user. It can manage your files automatically, analyze file lists and synchronize directories. xStarter can work with archives, download webpages and analyze their contents in order to select proper actions. xStarter can synchronize files via FTP and work with your e-mail.
Windows NT4/2000/XP/2003
5.72 MB
$39.50
xStarter Web Pilot is a version of xStarter that is specifically designed to administer large numbers of remote computers. xStarter Web Pilot works as a system administrator's agent on a remote computer. In addition to all the xStarter features, the program accepts remote connections with a web browser. This allows you to connect to a remote computer and manage the scheduled tasks it is running. You can view the list of tasks, watch their status and control their execution. You can, for example, start/stop tasks manually as needed.
You can trust recurring operations to the macro recorder to boost productivity and win time for useful things. Start recording from any application with a hotkey. Customize your macro with specific information, e.g. passwords, filenames or dates. Pauses when recording the macro will be replicated in the playback. After adding information, resume the macro. Widen the range of recordable operations and protect valuable data from exposure.
very good program. i use it to limit my son's computer time. (locks out after 30 minutes).

I instaled and activated xstarter the day it was avalible but now it prompts me to register it again what do I do
Save | Cancel
Well, I downloaded and installed on the same day, but was unable to figure out the two steps forward, one step back, 'request now' then 'request now' again activation process.
Finally figured it out today, which of course is too late. When you have a life, even 30 minutes fooling with this type of nonsense is too much.
For all you users out there. If the programmers can't make the activation process somewhat intuitive for you, that's a clue. You're better off with some other piece of software.
Sorry, I would have liked to check this software out, but I'll be moving on to something else. Thank goodness there is a competitive market out there.

#126 Karen, that is weird since I used Maxthon using the IE engine called Triton and I got a 5.72MB download and it worked fine for me. I even tried it on 2 other computers with the same download and it still worked.

OK, no problems registering. Procedure was different than most times but really, just follow directions in readme.txt and use your head. Still not sure? Go all the way to the top, past all that personal sniping shite posted today, and read comment #3 posted by GOTD.
GOTD posted that comment early. They must have known there would be plenty of problems today, considering most times some folks can't even manage clicking "activate.exe" before installing. No offense meant to anyone, but if you can't figure out how to register today's program then a powerful macro creater probably isn't for you.
Not had time yet to evaluate this program but looking forward to trying it out to see how it compares to RoboTask. Already like the different interface and especially the ability to create .exe files from macros, an ability that RoboTask doesn't have. Thanks GOTD and XStarter Solutions!

#134 No you're not talking to yourself.
Suggestion for GOTD (and software developers) - for those applications like this one where multiple people have problems registering, a set of screen shots would be useful.
My assessment of the software - not in yet, it will take time to play with, but it looks mighty impressive, and will enable me to do things I could't do with another fav, RoboTask. I just wish the comment section stayed open longer than 24 hours.

I always read the comments, pos/neg, so #93 and #96 thanks for this item, just what I was looking for. I'm user, advanced (lazy, I hate keystrokes) beginner, so I find the examples very usefull as a start.
I have had no problems installing/registering (twice), no virus allerts (Norton/Norman), I have tested it on a standalone and later on my laptop (3G, HSDPA internet) because on my laptop I can use this utility best.
so thank you GOTD, 10/10

Don't know why my first 2 pleas for help didn't print, but have since found some answers which might help others. If you have the icon in the tray, click it, then hit the top entry. From there, follow #114 instructions. Thanks, guys. And thanks GOTD team for another great program. Don't get discouraged with the novices in your audience - we're coming along slowly and appreciate all the help along the way.

Does anyone have a few minutes to help a real beginner? This is the first one that I cannot figure out how to register - I inzipped and installed and I have the key, but I'm stuck on how to "start" the program to get to the "Help/Register" menu. I can't find an icon; I looked in the "All Programs" place and clicked through the stuff there, but I'm at a loss where to look next. Please GOTD team or anyone - help! (I apologize if this is in the numbered responses, but time is growing late and I don't think I can get through them all before time runs out. If it is there, please give me the #.) Thanks.

I guess the logged as . is not fixed and my comment is waiting moderation but I need help fast. So Im posting again logged in sorry for posting twice.
I follow all the instructions.
Install the program, tell it to go ahead and run unregistered.
I go to help/Register.
I use my login name as user name and put the registration key
I click on Request now.
I get a window with options to register from the web or from the internet. I choose internet and click request now.
The window gives messages saying that it has succesfully contacted the server and spits a activation key.
I press ok, and the activation key magically appears at the activation key entry. I check and it is the same..
I press ok.
The program thanks me for registering and then it says that if everything is ok, the windows will dissapear.
I quit the program and start it right away and I get the “this is an unregistered program,… just like the first time around. What am I doing wrong?
This is the first time I can’t activate and I download pretty much every day either a program or a game or both.
I need help before time runs out!

Success, finally! I downloaded GOTD's xStarter file several times using IE7 which always gave me an unzipped Setup file of 5.72 MB. Activating Setup produced a registration code but never installed the program. Then I tried downloading using Opera and wound up with a Setup file of 5.78 MB which functioned properly. Evidently the file was corrupted somehow whenever IE7 downloaded it.
xStarter is now properly installed and I'll have my hands full trying to understand all its features and how to best utilize them. I noticed whenever I start xStarter, the program attempts to add itself to system start-up (per warnings from RegDefend) despite the fact I unchecked the configuration box to "Run at Windows startup."
I missed Robotask when it was offered by GOTD so I'm glad I was finally able to get xStarter installed and working. Thanks, GOTD.

TK you rock! #59 many people run older systems because they are reluctant to lose valued and highly functional peripherals. There is also a long standing tradition in computer technology called "backwards compatibility" that is still honored by many computer professionals. People are entirely much too inclined to accept the new and toss out the old. Some of them find themselves up to their eyeballs in trouble when they've discovered they've thrown out the baby with its bathwater. Archive.org is cool. Thanks!

Anonymous #114 Appreciate your help...........But No matter what I click there is NO HELP/REGISTER nor is there a "continue" anywhere.
Guess the free will expire before many of us get it right.

#114 I guess there isn't an continue button. Maybe it was called the unregistered button. The middle one anyway.

I would like to add to #114's comment that the registration key is provided in the second box that pops up after you hit setup to begin installing it. You will not find the registration key in the readme that comes along with this download, so do not close that box! It is titled "Activation." Just copy the key from the box and paste it into the registration key entry box. Also, FYI the registration key is different from the activation key!
Furthuremore, I would like to add that you don't have to use "giveawayoftheday" as your user name. You can use any name you want.

Like so many others, I am tearing my hair out trying to register and finding no "Help/Register menu". Unlike madman, who is enjoying a warm sunny afternoon (Hi! SF, we love you!) I'm freezing my bits off here in dark and gloomy London - and feeling very frustrated that today's offer won't let me register. It is the first time I have ever had difficulty registering a GOTD program. I thought it might be me and my stupidity, but as so many other people can't find the "Help/Register menu" either (and GOTD/The Advanced Specialist/and the many other sages haven't got back to us on how to find it) this one will have to bite the dust.
Let's hope future instructions for registering GOTD programs are more clearly written than this.

#110 diane... no it isn't a web site maker program. It is a program to take care of tasks which you do everyday. In short, you like this program handle it for you. Plus it will let you know what is going on, like email, files, folders, etc. Heck it will even open up this web site for you so you won't forget. Now how handy would that be?

I installed it (Vista Home Premium). No warnings from F-prot, no problem installing it at all. No problem registering it, no problem with creating my first macro and using it.

#104 Karen and others having activation problems. Okay it is true you do get a message saying that something like "trial evaluation period had expired". That is okay just ignore it. I believe you just press the continue button (now you are in trial mode). It should be in the system tray. Open it up again (right, click on the Main Menu). Now open Help and register.
USER NAME: giveawayoftheday (don't use anything else)
REGISTRATION KEY: (use the key that GAOTD gave you to use when you activated it)
ACTIVATION KEY: (this is the tricky part, see below)
Right next to this activation key entry, there is a link that says Request Now. Because you don't have one yet. This isn't the same as the other regular activation code from GAOTD. So you have to request now to get this third item. There is another menu, but everyone should figure it out and you will get the third item called the Activation Key. Now press OK and you should be just fine.

I would like to backup BillW50's Kudos to The Advanced Specialist -
Of all the comments posted, the Specialist's knowledge and advice have been of most use and interest, with a considered and subjective posting. Had me rushing off to the other sites for comparisons and may have re-ignited my interest in a little bit of programming using AutoIt.
Slagging off one another is of no use, and post after post every day repeating the same damn explaination on how to register a product or whinging about viruses and trojans is irritating to wade through. Once is enough and do you really think GOTD is going to risk their reputation offering out products full of nasties - I seriously doubt it!
So come on you lot, lets get along - teach each other about the programs offered, what alternatives may be out there, and be wider in your thinking - one man's ideal program is another man's recyle bin item.
Thank you to GOTD for their continued service and efforts while being constantly moaned at by a select few ingrates.

I'm having the same problem Karen in #91 has. The Setup file only gives me a registration code then takes me to the GOTD website which tells me xStarter is activated; it never actually installs the xStarter program. BillW50, without xStarter being installed, there's no icon "living in the system tray."
This GOTD program really sounds interesting and I'm disappointed there's a glitch in the setup procedure. I've repeatedly downloaded the GOTD xStarter file and experienced the same negative results. I also downloaded the program file from xstarter.com's website, but the GOTD registration code didn't work.

#92, BillW50: I realize xStarter has a system tray icon and I already knew the Windows XP system tray was "down by your clock." The problem is after activating "Setup" contained in the GOTD zip file, all I get is the registration key; xStarter is never installed. Without xStarter being installed, the program's icon doesn't "live in the system tray."
When this occurred with previous GOTD downloads, I went to the publisher's website, downloaded/installed the program then entered the registration key with success. When I tried that this time, I received a message saying xStarter's trial evaluation period had expired and I had to buy the program to use it. That was one short evaluation period. When I entered a user name and the GOTD registration code for xStarter, it wasn't accepted.
I just rebooted my PC to an earlier FirstDefense-ISR system image made prior to downloading today's GOTD and tried the process again. Same results. "Setup" gives a registration key, connects to the GOTD website which says I've successfully activated xStarter, but xStarter is never installed on my PC (despite the "Setup" file being 5.78 MB in size). Wish I knew what the problem is.

Um, I see I wasn't the only person to have trouble registering. Could have saved myself some time there, instead of flogging a dead horse. Rather flog a live developer. The blog says my comment is "awaiting moderation." Ha! If it were moderate, it wouldn't be my comment! OK, hammock-and-rum time now, I'll look in again when I'm medium rare.

Grrr! I'm living up to my nom de guerre today!
I have never had trouble registering any of the GOTD programs, ever ever until now. This thing is maddening!! Near the START of installation, it displays an activation box containing a registration key and the following instructions: "Start the software, go to Help/Register menu, enter your username and the registration key provided, and click "Request now", select "Internet activation" and click "Request now" again, then click OK, your copy will be registered."
Swell. So after installing, I executed the program. Surprise: There IS NO "Help/register manu." I find something that looks like a registration facility. After first informing me that my "evaluation period has ended" (that was quick!), it demands the registration key, username, and "activation code" that it informs me I may find in the "registration letter" that of course I didn't get.
User name, hmmm. I don't think I was provided a user name... and I know I didn't gtet an activation code. Just the registration code. Furthermore, the box didn't have a button labeled "request now," as the instructions said to click, nor one called "internet activation," or "drink me," "gotcha," or "have a nice day, bozo." Just "buy now," "OK," and "cancel."
"Buy now" predictably took me to the web page where I would cough up money if I hadn't gotten it for free from GOTD.
"Cancel" lives up to its name.
"OK" submits the form minus a couple of its fields (user name, activation code) and doesn't get the job done either.
ARGH!
I'm a fan of macro programs and was looking forward to this but I don't want to spend any more of this dazzling warm San Francisco day in my study, tearing out my hair trying to register the thing. I'll go out to the deck, get some sun, sip some Anguillan rum, and return later, doubtless in a better mood, ready to accept advice or to inquire directly of the developer if need be. This is a real head-scratcher!
(Was this supposed to go in a forum? I never know... :-) )

#88 You're funny John! That is like just adding about 15 seconds of more finger exercise on the keyboard and mouse and you can save hundreds of hours of the same later. And you are saying no thanks, my fingers and hands enjoy going through the same exercise zillions of times. So I don't need or want this software. LOL

Everyone leave other posters alone and comment only on the software...PLEASE! Let's forgive and forget what happened up to this point and begin to exchange our opinions about the software including likes and dislikes. This is a software comments section, so everyone should feel free to praise the software, hate the software, ask for help, suggest other software, etc. without fear of someone else dumping on them about their comment. Let's help each other from now on...now everyone shake hands and start over. Thanks in advance.

I agree with 2-SHED. The 'Advanced Specialist' as he calls himself (big head?) is sometimes not really helpful, but just trying to show he knows more than other people.
Let's just try to post helpful comments, and don't try to proof you're smarter than everybody else. Because I would win that contest anyway, LOL.
A rare case of Asperger's maybe?
