The product does not work. Went back and forth with their support for 3 weeks. After that I gave up and went with another product and they refused a refund. I should have not bought this. Beware.

I really like this software. Paired with the software that this company offered a few days ago, and you are all set to rip any dvd to pretty much any type of video output you can think of. Nice clean interface, intuitive. A bit slow, but free.

I see that Super C is still being recommended by some people. Uh no, that is a trojan. Don't touch it folks.

This is an easy to use video conversion program, with helpful wizard. It seems to work very well in converted videos (including .wmv) for use in ipod. I might even purchase this program for use in my other computers. Thanks.

DVDShrink does not burn a DVD-it works in conjunction with a DVD burning program. Check out their site, it also states "DVDShrink will also burn your backup DVD, if you have installed the latest version of Nero." Here is their site. http://www.dvdshrink.org/what_en.php
Thank you GAOTD for all your efforts and for allowing us to try out different software. When there is something that I like I would rather check it out this way and find out if it is to my liking than to go to a 'Big Box' store and find I don't like it and am out my money. Thanks again.

True too, that this is one of the Giveaways that has a nice website with the features listed clearly, and good FAQ and tutorial pages. Also the site has contact email given for support, I appreciate a site that gives details, faqs, etc, on its products (compared to some who have donated here and had no info at all on their site except maybe an ad for the prog they were selling!)

Sorry, I already downloaded a video convertor here about a month ago and am very pleased with it! Thanx!
$35 is kinda high for a video convertor, but there is inflation and the high gas prices egh? $20 applications should go up in price to atleast $30.
Maybe-> why there are so many convertors... the recent realeases of developement software that has many converting functions built in. Yup, giving the 'little programmer' a chance to wrap these "prebuilt functions" in a custom designed interface.
I guess its just a matter of finding one that feels comfortable- and looks nice. Thou, media formats do very-> and all the options here on giveawayoftheday give the users to find that "media format" they are looking for.

Personally, I think that Xilisoft deserves special praise for having donated two programs that I know of.

I've tried a number of freeware Youtube downloader/converter programs and so far, have been disappointed in them. Here's an example of the kind of situation you run into so ofter with certain kinds of freeware.

As claimed:
E-ZSoft YouTube Downloader allows you to download/get your favorite videos from www.YouTube.com website and save to your local disc forever by just specifying the video URL!
Support batch Download TouTube Video. you can create multi-download tasks at the same time.
Support break download, Don't worry about unreliable, slow connections or network hang. If an download fails before completion, it is resumed from the point of failure so time and bandwidth are never wasted

TRUTH
E-ZSoft YouTube Downloader
Only downloads one at a time and pops up an annoying nag screen with sound alert all the time, trying to get you to buy the pay version! I uninstalled it after only a short time because the damn popups and sound alerts were totally intolerably annoying! (And I added it to a list I am keeping of freeware that really is sh*tware, so I don't make the mistake of ever trying it again and so I can tell others what to AVOID)

I recently did download Super to try, but havaen't been doing any video downloading to try it with yet.

So far, my favorite to use has been YouTubeGet, which was a giveaway here about a month ago and downloads and converts youtube videos when it downloads them. YouTubeGet has outperformed every other Youtube downloader/converter that I've ever tried!

YouTubeGet was featured May 14, I think. I should check and see if I can find out how much negative comment it received and how much griping about converters was done, just for my own curiosity since in retrospect, YouTubeGet has proven itself to be excellent!

Zamzar takes too long. You submit your file, and then they email you when it's finished (usually later in the day). Who wants to wait?

Thanks GAOTD, but I'm staying away from this one. Already have converters to spare!

P.S. How 'bout running Glary Utilities Pro again? I lost it on my desktop recently, and the free version doesn't satisfy me now that I've been spoiled by the Pro version! Thanks!

WOW!! I just tried out this converter and it is super fast. It does what it says it does. Checked the finished product and the video looked great. I definitely am satified with this software. I used Any Video Converter but this one is much faster and has more options as far as different files are concerned. thumbs way up for this one.

#58 Jahala, I also have DVD Shrink 3.2 but I believe that it uses another program to burn. To see if that is true on your PC, Start DVD Shrink, go to Edit, Preferences, File I/O tab and see if the Enable Burning With Nero box is checked. If it is, try removing the check and then try to burn something.
I don't want to try this, because mine is working fine using Nero. :^)

I've installed and tried this. Here's my review:

1. It has such a lovely and clean interface! Don't see that much in video converters. Plus, the Wizard mode makes it very easy.
2. I see an option for PSP video manager - I haven't connected my PSP to try but I haven't seen such in video converters I've tried before unless it specifically says it's a PSP converter. So, this is good. One less software to install.
3. The conversion is not that fast. Maybe that depends on the type of input and output. The best speed I ever got was with WinAVI converter which was faster on my Athlon XP 2500 than this Xilisoft on my Core 2 Duo 1.8 Ghz. How come?
4. The converter used only the first CPU core and does not touch the second core much. You can look it two ways: first, since core 2 is free, your multi-tasking is less impacted. second, it could have processed faster if it balances between the two cores and allows multitasking differently (by setting priorities for example).
5. One thing I was looking for is the ability to merge a subtitle into the movie. Also, to be able to select a particular audio channel or audio track from the input for the output. This is especially important for foreign (Chinese, esp.) movies because they usually come either with several chinese tracks or different audio for the left and right stereo channel. PSP can't load sub or srt or select audio channel/track so it's important for me. Alas, this one does not have the ability to do so.
6. It has quite a lot of preset profiles for almost all kind of output most people would need. That's good. No need to tweak around like in that super-ugly Super (Super is just a front-end for opensource converters. For a frontend, looks and usability are important and they can't even bother to think of user experience!).
7. I'm still waiting for the conversion to complete and I think this is slow, at least for a Core 2 Duo. Maybe I should stick with WinAVI.
That's all. Anyway, thanks for this, GAOTD. I think this is one of the more professionally designed converter - nice looking and easy to use.

#11 Whiterabbit, from reading all the comments I'm sure you have found a way, but if you haven't give SUPER at try, it does .vob http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html . And don't pay too much attention to the complaints about it leaving crap behind when you uninstall, it's freeware right. I'm sure you have Glary's or some other reg cleaner. And thanks for all the reviews. GOTD good software, but thanks anyways, already have it.

#33 I had the same problem. Turns out the folder where I saved the installer has the name Xilisoft and the folder is opened. After I close the folder, it can install. Heheh. They just do a simple check to Windows to see if any active object (window, software, file) is opened with the name - could also affect the browser window too. I think that's pretty silly - they should check that the object using that name is an actual exe image, not an explorer window.

@11 Whiterabbit
I see a lot of answers already for you but I'll give mine anyway because you're such a good person.

If the files are in the Audio_TS and Video_TS folders, they're normal movie DVD formats - the video should be in MPEG2. You can easily convert this with a DVD ripper - like the Xilisoft DVD Ripper Ultimate. If your DVD drive can read RAM disc, just rip it to a DivX / XviD / or Mpeg4 (not MP4) format.

Confirm the exact format your portable player can play. If the portable player has the DivX certified logo, check the exact profile - Home Theatre, Portable, etc. When ripping, use the same DivX profile for best experience.

Then, I think you can just burn the DivX file (along with subtitle files if needed) onto the normal DVD as data DVD.

If your portable player can play normal video DVD then it's much simpler. Use a DVD disc copier (like the Xilisoft DVD Copy Express) to copy to a DVD or DVD-/+RW - it may need to re-encode to match physical DVD size, but probably not.

Hope that helps.

ps. I gave example software Xilisoft because that's on the adverts on this page, hehe. Saves research time.

BUT... don't give a product a low rating.. just because you don't need it.. or have one like it.. for those of us trying to use the positive vs negative comments to help us choose.. you throw the numbers off... be a bit fair.. it's to everyone's advantage .. rate what you have tried.. we don't need to know that you are ungrateful... it's worse than nagging... grow up... FWIW... If this converter won't work with your video file, try importing it using the "Add DirectShow File" option in the File menu.

Uninstall should be straightforward because there's not too much to remove other than the program folder.

#48: "Oh, wow. I bought this a few months ago…It works wonderfully on XP SP2, just uses a lot of CPU."

That good! Encoding Video is very CPU intensive, & higher CPU usage numbers mean the program's using all or most of the horsepower your PC has to offer so it can finish faster. Regardless how efficient the program is (or isn't), only using your CPU a little bit means it's going to take longer.

Xilisoft Video Converter is a good converter with more options than most of the similar ffmpg based programs offered recently on GOTD. Installation creates the program folder & start menu shortcuts + 1 file is copied to the Windows\System32 folder and registered: "SampleGrabber.ax" is a Microsoft file designed to [from the MS site]: "The Sample Grabber filter is a transform filter that can be used to grab media samples from a stream as they pass through the filter graph.". In the registry 2 keys are created for SampleGrabber.ax, 1 key for uninstall, & 1 Xilisoft key under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software.

The trial download from the developer's site is larger than the GOTD version, I *think* because the trial appears to contain Quicktime 7 setup, but the trial files are older. The trial also contains an English help file plus the PSP Video Mgr, & will expand with Universal Extractor. The trial at least (I don't know if the GOTD version has these files) may install 3 Microsoft files in one of your Windows folders (probably System32), along with the RealMedia Splitter (RealMediaSplitter.ax) if they aren't already installed.

Xilisoft Video Converter also has the option to import video using some codecs and related files installed on your PC but not included with the converter -- It's called "Add Direct Show File". If you can play the file, than there's a good chance this converter can handle it too with this option.

@enovy [#46]: I have been using DVD Shrink to BURN DVDs for quite some time now. Nero kept messing up DVDs. While Nero is fine for converting from avi to DVD format [VIDEO_TS] and for making your own DVDs, on my computer, at least, it's lousy for actual burning [the picture and sound get out of sync during burning]. I should have stayed with v7 instead of upgrading to v8. Anyway, I use Nero to set up my videos for burning, have it write to disk [VIDEO_TS format], then use DVD Shrink to burn it to a DVD.

I don't know where you got the idea that DVD Shrink cannot burn DVDs. While it can shrink them to fit if they are over the DVD GB limit, it does an excellent job of just burning to a DVD.

I am using DVD Shrink v3.2. Launch your DVD Shrink and click on Open Files. Select a VIDEO_TS folder and you will notice that on the menu Backup, which previously was grayed out, is now ready to use. Click on that and you will see all the burn settings.

BTW, I never recommend a program that I have not used and therefore know that it actually does what I say it does.

There is no consideration given to English language users of this program. In the table of contents under “Introduction” are four sub-categories, “Description”, “Fonctions”, “Specifications”, and “Configuration requise”. Besides being in French, its one page of information, in other words, it’s like a one page essay with four paragraphs to cover everything. It's nothing more than a features list. Now there is a link to the Xilisoft web site where a user can find help documentation and tutorials. Only the information there is not any better, and as for the understandability, here are two examples. One is from the FAQ for this product and the other from the tutorial:

“Q: I want to change some settings of conversion. Where can I found them?”

“Tip: It is can be free download to try before purchase. In the trial version, it is only limited the ripping time, but not the functionality. Please ignore the register request to have a try.”

I understand that there are many non-English speaking developers. I’m also aware of the fact that the United States is a major market. If someone’s intentions are to sell in this market, get the language right! If you’re going to take all the time and effort to create a program then blow off the language in the UI, then I have to question the performance of that product. Bringing a product to the U.S. under the auspices that Americans are stupid and will not notice things like that, I only have one thing to say, “Aucune vente!!!”

Mike and others:

To work with video files (compress/edit etc) Avidemux2 (http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/) is the best and easiest program available. It will load most common formats (DVDs, avis, mpgs), is easy to cut/edit with, and compresses the video using various techniques if it is too big to fit on a DVD. The use DVD Flick (mentioned above) to burn the results to a DVD.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?s=576986d7aec6d5a2e218cfa34f00cdd9&showtopic=3556&pid=13209&st=0&#entry13209

A lot of things SUPER © did pretty much what a malware would do.

Two things combine to make this “look” like malware .

First it removes next to nothing that it adds to windows and system 32 when you uninstall the program. At the very most their uninstaller removed 10% of this software and leaving all those hidden/read only DLLs behind.

Next a lot of these files are hidden from the user and many also have no version info.

And like people mentioned earlier and in the malware forum, those hidden/READ ONLY DLLs can make your system unstable and could break other programs that use those same DLLs.

As with the last Xilisoft offering (Xilisoft DVD Ripper Ultimate on May 30, 2008), I am unable to intall this on one of my computers because the installer thinks the program is already running.

Looking through the earlier comments, it seems I'm not the only person having this problem. Clearly, Xilisoft desperately needs to fix their installer.

Also, as several other people have already pointed out, the help file included with this program is entirely in French. (A bit of hacking shows that there is only the one .chm file included in the installer, so apparently you always get French help regardless of the language chosen on install.)

Luckily, like every other regular visitor to this site, I'm not exactly in great need of a video convertor app anyway as my hard drive is already overflowing with the things.
