Initially I was very excited. I watched all the tutorials and I thought this would be perfect for me as I don't know html. Now I'm extremely disappointed. The free version does not have the functionality of the version shown in the tutorials. At first I thought I done something wrong or missed something. So I watched the tutorials again, then I realized the limitations were in the software, not me. You can't even add links to images or text. As other people have said - this is a crippled version.

Actually I'm extremely upset. I think GOTD has tried to fool us here or someone has fooled them. If I'd known it was a stripped down version I probably would have downloaded it to check it out to see if it was something I could use - with a view to upgrading. That would be honest and I would not be feeling like I've been conned.

Perhaps the strategy is to force upgrades. I wonder if GOTD gets commission if people upgrade? The question is now should I spend 50.95 euros on the upgrade or look for something else to purchase? Any recommendations?

This is a stripped down version, however, a person who is at all familiar with HTML and CSS can work around the shortcomings and make a really decent website. The pages do have a lot of overhead, and tend to load slow, but for making a basic website and then going in and editing it to polish it up, this can't be beat. If one wants to spend some money for the full version, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be disappointed. Nice clean code. Thanks Giveaway for some really good software.

this software is already free... no deals here, move on.... the SMART version is pathetically slim and it is basically and addware to point you to buy the full version..

It is a lie that this version cost $92.43... this is the free version and not even the latest free version.. this is my first time downloading something from this page and will be the last one.

Too many paid shill votes. The 69% thumbs up is obviously a shill, paid out to some users to vote up software that's absolutely terrible, and a fraudulent offering at that. Hours before, when I posted my comment, the thumbs up rating was less than 40%. The price is a lie, the version is old (a newer ALSO FREE version is available from their OWN WEBSITE) and they have the nerve to shill on GOTD?

I am going to personally write GOTD's comment group and ask that X5 software not be given away again due to these fraudulent, misleading, and almost malicious tactics employed by the company or an agent of the company.

Previously Website X5 was given away as the compact version, it had a 'registration' process, it apparently had many issues but at least this level of LYING was not involved. This was 2 years ago.

Honestly, Inconmedia should post a REAL version of their software here, not a FREE version, and should offer an apology if they were in any way involved in this TERRIBLE shill practice. It wasn't even professional, someone shilled with the name of "Shill".. seriously...

GAOTD: As always a good try, love your service, but don't let hucksters like this try to screw your audience.

Installed fine but the templates are really really bad. If the templates were better this might be a good option. So basically you'll end up with a cheesy looking website easily.

This seems as little too smart marketing tricks.
1. It’s a old version (ver. 7.x is not even available any more)
2. The price (in the GAOTD header) says $92.43
3. Actually the price for the new available and much more powerful ver. 8.x, is only $53.23 on WebSite X5 shop page (https://secure.element5.com/esales/cart.html)
4. Some of you have already mentioned that there are no “advanced” features in this GAOTD, as in there video tutorial. Like Webshop with credit card payments and Blog. Yes that’s right – its seems to be only in the WebSite X5 EVOLUTION 8 version.
5. In this GAOTD you can’t even do extra menu levels, just one level in vertical placement, and no horizontal option – no nothing! (a plain simple “web tool”)

Thumps total down – even thou its free, we don’t need old outdate stuff to a higher price than even the new more powerful version.

My Revo uninstaller will nicely take care of this totally “strippede of function” version of todays GAOTD.

PS. Some has mentioned other software solutions. I don’t know about any free solutions, but take a look at this and make a compare with this GAOTD, it really rocks! http://www.artisteer.com

Having to reboot every time I want to run this application is a non-starter for me. This is a good advertising stunt, especially all the shill comments above that would make someone think this application is much different from the way it really is. Thanks for wasting my time.

Downloaded, and installed okay. Worked fine. The program showed user thru a sequence of making a new site: project page, site map, and then individual web pages. It offered many templates to use (wow).
However, the features offered are rather limited. There are a few buttons on the page creation. The right panel has only two buttons (the middle button for resizing is gone). The extra features to support vbscript, javascript, CSS, ASP, JSP are not included. The ported pages seem fine, but looked/ appeared amateurish.
Overall, it is a good starting program for the un-initiated; and it is also good for people who want to exploit the templates.
Other drawbacks: one cannot inspect html codes like in Dreamweaver; this program cannot do ftp to move files from/to a server (like Dreamweaver); sometimes the open program got stuck on the left corner, and cannot be moved-it must be closed.
What kind of software that other professional web designers use these days?

@161 UPDATE

I tried re-downloading & re-installing and it appears to be working now. I still got the same error message during installation ("VIF_CANNOTRENAME" for a file called "ips_uk.dat"), but I'm no longer getting the error upon launching the program. The ONLY thing I did different this time was not check the "Launch Program After Installation" (or whatever) at the last step of the install. It might have just been a fluke, but I'm happy.

Thanks to the GOTD team for a great giveaway today! :D
I like seeing good, quality software like this. Keep 'em coming!

Well, it didn't turn out easy for me; in fact, it seems uninstallable.

I activated and installed it as administrator on my laptop that's running vista home premium. When it finished installing, I didn't tick the option to launch the program and closed it instead. When I tried to open it a few minutes later so as to check on the version number, a message popped out saying it can't run because it's already running. How could it be running when I had closed it? Anyway, I tried again several times later and the same message.

I uninstalled it and tried installing again, but this time the installation is interfered with a message popping out that says it has to be uninstalled first. Huh? I checked and it was really uninstalled. I checked the location path and tried to just delete all its files (it was already uninstalled anyway) and... it says permission is needed to uninstall it--but I'm using the Administrator account. So now, the program is uninstalled and "uninstallable" and the files are stuck.

Definitely thumbs down.

Solution:
First uninstall any previous version.
Second unpack the setup.exe into temp folder manually and start install.

- Installed flawlessly on Windows XP - SP3
- Nothing but problems installing on Vista Ultimate - 32 bit - SP2

I tried disabling the firewall & antivirus on Vista, as another person mentioned earlier. I also tried running setup.exe as administrator, but I kept getting errors.

I finally skipped over the errors and the programs *seems* to have installed. It will take a while before I can definitively say whether the install was really successful or not since I'm not sure what was skipped.

On a side note, this appears to be an out of date version of crippled software unless I'm missing something. Not the usual GAOTD quality, but I'll try it since I get asked about these WYSIWYG site builders a lot.

Personally, I think it's easier to just code this stuff by hand & avoid learning all of these "shortcut" programs - but I digress.

It's an interesting giveaway if nothing else. I'll thumbs it up just for that reason alone. ; )

In my opinion WebSite X5 SMART 8 is the better of the two, the difference in size is due to the small number of templates included in the download. WebSite X5 SMART 8 includes a link to download additional templates, most are free. If you decide to go with WebSite X5 SMART 8 note that the code provided on the website is not the unlock code. When installing you are prompted for the unlock code, leave that blank and press the button at the bottom of the prompt that says “Request Unlock Code”. Use the code given on the website here to have the unlock code e-mailed to you. Paste that code into the prompt and continue with the installation. CHEERS.

I have Vista Ultimate x64.
There was an error or two during installation, then when I launch the program (after installing) I get "General error loading program."

GOTD finally has a program that I can actually use, and it won't even work on my system. Sweet.

I downloaded it earlier this morning, so I might try uninstalling, downloading again, then re-installing. We'll see if that helps...

Not bad at all for the people who have no web scripting skills.

# 113 Licence agreement says :"Strictly for non-commercial use", so I can not understand why people are complaining that shopping cart is disabled.
This software has a consistency through the browsers (Firefox, Opera, IE). For example, Dreamweaver has(had) an issue with it. Templates are looking nice. I liked it.

I have to agree with ALOT of others this program is the stripped down free version I have tried this worked ok but does nothing like the toturial claims it does that is only for the full version Evolution 8 which should be the offer not this lame free one tht does nothing really and when you try to unistall it it is a hassel at least for me it was, had to go into all the program files and delete an folder that had its name associated with it before i could get rid of it, So thumbs down on this free version of software being used as a giveaway sad

I was really optimistitic and exited about this but! I get this error messageevery time I try to start the program: "This software cannot be executed in 'large font' mode: choose 'normal font (96dpi)' from Advanced Video Settings of Windows Control Panel" I can not find "Advanced Video Settings" in my Vista Control Panel. I can not find where to change the font size. So I tried to reinstall it but I get an error message saying that I have to uninstall the existing version first. But! it is not listed in Windows "Add or remove hardware" and it is not visible in several other programs I have that will uninstall. It is also not visible in the shortcuts in the start menu. Thde only place I can actually find it is in Program Files but if there is an uninstall file there I can't find it. I will just try deleting the whome program but I am not confident that reinstalling it will make any difference. This program seems to be primitive if it needs a particular font size and needs to be uninstalled to reinstall (and has no uninstaller!) So far this has been a HUGE WASTE OF TIME and very frustrating and disappointing!
recommendations suggestions before the GOTD time is up?

I would be very grateful!

I visit GOTD not only to check out new programs, but to learn from the comments. (Thank-you especially Mike, Fubar, Bubby, TK, renegade, Giovanni, and others...) Today, #85, way to go with the 100+ lbs. weight loss!

*** Today was not a regular giveaway -- and it took too much reading and investigating to find out that, yes, WebSite X5 Smart 7 (and now Smart 8) IS an always free program, and the most limited of their 4 offerings, very similar to Express 7 (or 8) (thanks for posting the link to the comparison: http://www.websitex5.com/en/compare_4versions.html). It's possible that the much larger file size offered here today reflects some additions by the publisher that are not in their regular free version offered at their website, but that is only speculation -- graphic editor, flash, 200 templates, for example, are listed as features of this GOTD download, but are NOT available on their website version. The best program they had worth downloading would be Evolution 8.

*** I can find no verification of $92.43 as a price for ANYTHING they sell -- this is flat-out deception and should not have been allowed (don't the editors here check out basics like price?)

*** For an easy to use, basic web site creator, this program should get the job done. But as mentioned, there are other alternatives that will do a lot more. And I'm troubled by several odd comments which seem to indicate it affects other, already installed software; and of course the unusual "no large fonts" issue.

Beautiful! This program is exaclty what I needed for a friend with a very creative mind and very limited programming skills. It only took me a few minutes of accepting defaults and filling in simple common-sense questions (Site name, admin name, etc) to generate a nice looking homepage, which had well-written code. She's downloading it as I write this.

Installation: No problems on my Vista Home Premium on Dell 2ghz dual-core processor, 2 GB RAM. Thank you, GOTD and Incomedia.

Even if we were actually given the latest full version instead of old obsolete freeware, I wouldn't touch it due to the obvious paid shill of every other comment here.

Incomedia is trying to get us to believe that these dopey raves about installation, design and W3C compliancy (especially from someone whose linked page fails W3C validation) are going to sell GOTD users on what is a mediocre template-driven site builder with more restrictions and less options than you could find online at any number of free hosting sites.

I don't blame GOTD for this nonsense, just the software developers who think they're getting over on the GOTD user base and dealing with idiots. The idiots you deal with are the shills you pay, guys, not us.

#88 Your suggestion is a great suggestion for everybody here. Sometimes recently, I initially downloaded VMWare server with the main purpose of testing these giveawayoftheday softwares, but in the process, discovered many great uses for it. I now have 2 virtual computers within my main computer, and find no problem to add another in a few minutes' time.

Another software very useful is Total Uninstall (but a payware), that I use to monitor what registry keys are inserted by these softwares. In the process, I can preserve most them for later re-installation, after uninstalling them using the same, just in case I need them.
