For Steven Martins

Nice program , but I am not sure how Total Privacy handles multiple user accounts on one computer. Does it need one installation for every account?

Scenario: One admin account for admin usage and a limited account for daily work and online usage. Total Privacy installed on an admin account cannot access e.g. the browser data of the other users.

#132-- I had gotten the same errors earlier in the day and sent them off. I did not get a response either.

I had tried again to download a new copy on a different PC and got the same error. I also hope that they fix the error and repost it for us. I was excieted by all the positive responses and now am disapointed that I can not get it.

To Steven Martin and Pointstone Software,
Thank you so much for your attention to our reponses. To all the naysayers of this product.....when was the last time you had answers for a developer to a program within a few minutes. What other software company from GAOTD has ever provided this? None. Great program Steven Martin and Pointstone Software. I have left CCleaner in preference to your program. 2 thumbs up!

I had many doubt for this program, I've been with CCleaner for about 2 years, and I've finally urged to test this program out, since it is the GAOTD.

Being as $29.95 for a piece of software that is seemed to be the same quality as many freewares is outrageous. Compared to many freewares I will choose the freeware over this product being priced at $30.
Freewares like ccleaner of course.

But since its a freebie today, its a really good software.

Thanks kids for your time.

Unfortunately, I cannot get the program to run properly. On startup, I immediately get an "Error occurred" dialog box. See the dialog box at http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/4761/totalprivacyerrorxr5.png

When I tell it "don't send", the program loads - however it's obviously broken. See image at http://img371.imageshack.us/img371/6065/totalprivacyerror2ue0.png

I've tried uninstalling, manually cleaning out the TotalPrivacy and Pointstone registry entries, and reinstalling several times. Also tried downloading a newer version of the file after seeing #28's comment. Nothing is working.

Guess I won't get to try this one out - unless the good folks at Pointstone allow me to install a copy that works tomorrow...

Finally, after reading all of the comments I understand that the large number of "thumbs down" appears to be *misrepresented.* ?

Mostly positive comments and excellent response from this developer!

I'm going to grab it now, based upon everyone's else comments and the utility of such a robust cleaning program. Oh, BTW, #114 - it is not just for clean-up after "nefarious" or discreet activities (such as P*r$); e.g., it's useful for cleaning up traces of personal financial transactions, personally identifiable information (PII), and files you don't want other users of any computer (such as your kids) to be able to find. Kids are smart and they are growing up in the digital age. Also, it's good for protecting/cleaning business data that you might not want everyone in your company to have at their fingertips. If you share resources, any extra precaution is a good thing. Thx, GAOTD. Enough - I'm going to d/l TP right now and clean free space.

Regards,
Cheri

I have a personal launch bar at desktop, which I created by making a folder on desktop, place shortcuts I need, moved it to corner of desktop . After creating the launch bar, I hide the shortcut folder. It was working fine.
After downloading this software, when I restarted my system, my launch bar disappeared. Again I had to unhide the shortcut folder, move it to corner to create launch bar and again hide the folder.
If this has to do something with this software, please help me out, because I want to keep this software.

Program works well. I like being able to customize the cleaning. The only thing that bothers me about it is when I chose the "wipe free space" button it told me that it would finish in about "1 Hour, 105 Minutes, and 37 Seconds." The last time I checked, there were only 60 minutes in an hour. Kind of disturbing. I thought that maybe I had slipped into some alternate dimension or something. Thanks GAOTD.

Cannot understand so many getting excited about the “wipe free space” function as ERASER has been around for years and is superb at what it does.http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/

best way to wipe free space is write code to fill your disk in chunks of about 1gb using random numbers (random is to defeat compression and 0-byte sparse block skipping)

then once you've filled it with files, fill it again with a tree of directories since directory space may be stored separately from file data-space.

By the way eraser recently had some problems reported in its function to wipe what's in the trash. My recommendation is to drag everything out of the trash,, wipe it, then fill your disk as above.

A single wipe is fine for routine purposes, all this multi-wipe stuff is crazy for most people as it assumes an adversary willing to spend huge $$$'s on taking your drive apart and examining it with a SEM or a squid.

I installed on Vista as admin - the program didn't show up in 'start/programs' or as a desktop icon when I switched back to a regular user, so I found the icon in program files and started it up explicitly. It immediately errored due to not being able to write a log file. (Why is it writing a log file anyway? It's supposed to *get rid* of log files...)

Here's the interesting thing: it popped up some sort of backtrace/debug window (incidentally showing that the code is written in Pascal... really???!), and asked about submitting an error report online. Since I *never* do these, I clicked the red close icon rather than any of the buttons, to be sure to kill the window - nope, it closed the window but then started sending the error report. The window that came up when it was trying to connect did not have any close icon or cancel button so the message went out a few seconds later before I had any way to stop it. Once the report had been submitted the program then started up.

This isn't really what I expect from a privacy product; I hope this is an accidental oversight and will be fixed?

For those wondering WHY you might be concerned about privacy or "covering your tracks"---have you ever accidentally stumbled across a porn site? They can be horrible to get rid of even if you immediately try to leave! First of all they'll make it impossible to back out of the page (loop you right back in) and they can somehow sneak cookies or something onto your computer (even though my settings were to NOT accept random cookies) and they you can be inundated with pop-ups and other ads or even emails advertising other porn sites. UGH.

Secondly, anytime you visit a site you chance getting not only the cookies you want which allow the site to recognize you the next time and log in without a password, etc., but you MAY also recieve cookies and tags from their advertisers or affiliated sites.

Believe me, it's a jungle out there and sometimes you just want to make yourself very tiny and hope no one notices you.

Question for Steve Martins: how many bits of entropy in the seed for the PRNG you use to generate random passwords, and where do they come from? (I'm speaking as an old cypherpunk who has done code reviews on many password generators and have found very few that did the right thing with the random initialisation/generation)

If within the one run, you ask for more than one password to be generated, are they from sequential calls to the PRNG? If not what do you do to inject entropy between successive calls?

G

One minor UI issue found so far: clicking on the column headings in the 'start menu click history viewer' does not sort the data by that column, which would be the intuitive windows way of treating a click there.

Thanks to GAOTD for a great program!

One complaint (Steven?): When I wipe free space, any algorithm I select (via change) does not match its description. Which is being used? Selected or Described?

OK...this is a pretty good program in regards to privacy...It offers a ton of options to customize a wash setting with a good number of algorithms to choose from, more than probably necessary. I do like how Total Privacy allows free space to be wiped (this feature is not available in CCleaner). It is a different tool the CCleaner I recommend both. CCleaner is a great tool as well which offers the ability to delete programs and actually removes the hidden folders and registry files, this is not found in Total Privacy.

Overall...go for it..it's free and it can offer most cleaning options not found in other privacy tools.

I don't normally get into spitting contests, but.....#114, when you point one finger at others, there are four pointing back at you. Porn sites are not the only sites that can cause problems the average user, much less ones who do a lot of surfing for non-prurient reasons, but you may not surf anything but those and free music sites so you wouldn't know. Don't judge us and don't comment until you have tried the software and know something whereof you speak.

#57 et al: I have found through trial and error that downloading GAOTD files works best on IE, even though I prefer Firefox.

#87 et al: Best place to find free reliable download of Glary Utilities and other software is CNET (Download.com).

Many thanks to GAOTD, Pointstone and Steve Martins for a super freebie. I have tried others and currently use Glary Utilities, but so far this one looks like it is going to beat the heck out of not only CCleaner, but many others I have tried and dumped.

People wouldn't necessarily need be ashamed of anything not to want others poking around in their PC usage. It's simply no one else's business, not to mention that a clean computer is usually a better responding one.

This is one mean, clean-ing application . . . will take some configuring, but nothing too scary. A definite keeper. Now I can GooGle "How to murder my X and make it look like a grizzley bear attack" and not have to worry about Fish and Game investigators finding the search! YeeHaw!

Well since I'm in the process of downloading this to my third computer, I guess I must like it.

Easy to install. Easy to configure. Good explanations where I looked anyway (like the different wipe algorithms). Seemed to work just fine for washing and wiping. Although I'm not certain how to check it adequately.

This is the first GAOTD that I have d/l'd. I have been observing for a couple of weeks. Ignoring the moaners (yes I'd love something major & exciting - I'm sure that the software engineers would love to hear your suggestions). And not seeing anything that I needed, until today.

BIG thanks GAOTD, and Pointstone. Also thanks to this morning's 'beta' testers who gave me the confidence to try this one.

I read somewhere that Index.dat deletion should be used sparingly as it may harm PC. Wait til it`s grown large say once every month before deleting.

Why is someone surprised that Internet Explorer misbehaves? Despite it`s billionaire owner,It`s a bummer, always has been, Firefox Rocks!

Wiping free space is both a security and an registry safeguard. if you delete a trojan the registry/system may still be able to "see it" one pass wipe is enough to only read the lines and not what`s between them as well!

As I downloaded this item a few minutes ago and some of these bugs are being fixed on the fly, will there be an opportunity to download an updated version with the bugs fixed?

See comment 44 :
Msg from GAOTD Team: We’ve updated the giveaway package. If you’re getting error message (that this offer is expired), please re-download. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Or will be be sent an opportunity to receive an updated version or patch? We are testing and providing feedback, it would be great to see the results after some of these items are fixed.

#80 :
The “Check for Updates” option will obviously not work like the regular versions. If we find an issue that should be addressed after the giveaway is over, we will offer it for free via the Update Wizard.

With the author/representative checking on gripes I am sure this is a winner, thanks Steven Martins, and Pointstone Software.
A person that cares that much is to be commended.

I like the program Total Privacy. i like options for what it deletes.I keep the cookies that Ad-Aware 2007 doesn`t delete. I like the Password generator. HOWEVER i would like to verify that the generator is seeded by some random cause instead of retaining some number from the program or my computer.Old generators would reproduce exactly the same aeries of digits. This is a VERY BIG CONCERN since my websites have been hacked.
I downloaded this about 8:00 this morning and configured the settings.
bout 12:00 i downloaded the supposed revised file. after running the Total Privacy program ,and restart, i noticed that the Earthlink connect tray icon had vanished, the space was there, the link was there, but no icon. that is easily fixed. I have had the complete icon, link and space to vanish before, but the first for this.

as a ps,
For trying software, all the testers should receive a reinstall key.
I love to try new software, sometimes you get a goody you want to keep, sometimes you get hours of reinstalling the complete system. Ergo lost free software. I hate loosing a GOODIE.

I like the GAOFD, I infer we all do that’s why we here like vultures looking to get the best for free. But how much free software are you going to weight your HDD with. I am waiting with bated breath for some juicy software that I’m willing to wipe most of the rubbish off my pc to replace with. We are Software UAT Testers, guinea pigs!

We get to test the software, some still in Beta stage, but we also get to keep it as long as we don’t format the PC, (imaging may work) who’s going try this! The vendors get feedback and ultimately release an updated version at a further time hopefully through GAOFD. I find most of the comments helpful even the negatives ones. It's all valid feedback! Keep them coming great banter! Great software!
Cheers

No Windows Mail for Vista. It has Outlook Express but it's greyed out.
Needs Windows Mail same location.
I am the admistrator of this Vista computer. It won't delete or shred the following files in Vista:
C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\WMI\RtBackup
EtwRTDiagLog.etl
EtwRTEventLog-Application.etl
EtwRTEventlog-Security.etl
EtwRTEventLog-System.etl
EtwRTMsMpPsSession.etl
There is no way to assign permission period.I have tried extensivly to assign permission. But if you know a way to get your shredder to work on these that would be great.
I did go in with a Linux disc & rm them once but that is outside of Windows & a pain.
Other than that it looks like a good program & doesn't have the compatibility problems Eraser has with Vista Microsofts new Windows ME>

So many thumbs down and yet when you read the comments most everyone seems happy with the program. I downloaded it even though I have at least 5 others that do the same thing. This program washed my computer faster than I have ever seen. I guess that is good for the environment, right? :) Based on what I have encountered so far I am going to check their other products out. Good utility programs are what keeps your computer in tip top shape.

EXCELLENT Program, this Total Privacy 5.50e, thanks again GAOTD, the download was fast as its a small size, activation on Winxp, no key required. When you open the program click on "Wash Setup" on left of the screen, there are eight headings, Overview, Wash, Wash Setup, Profiles, settings, shredder, Wipe Free Space, Other Privacy Utilities. After opening "Wash Setup" you have the option to choose from the headings where you want to "Wash" they are Windows, Browsers,Messaging,Custom,Wipe Free Space. In each area you can tick the box for cleaning/wash, and it gives precise details for each box by placing the cursor over it,so its not going to delete something needed. I have to admit i gave this Program a lot to do including wiping free space on both my hard drives, it did all i requested, no problems, the disk cleaning takes time,"of course" the tasks i gave it took all of 2 hours 34 mins, but as i mentioned i asked a lot, most certainly a program to keep, "and a newbie could use it", oh and it has a Shredder and an Organise Start Menu, a pretty comprehensive program, and for free,

The last one the gave away was the pro edition and I really liked it. Another one was Reg easy (I think), I used it every day and liked it even more than GU. Anyhow, hope some utilities start coming our way again.
