Absolute fail. Installed just fine. Registered (now they send marketing spam).
Used on a 2 gig flash card I KNOW was just reformatted (because I just reformatted it) and it found NOTHING.
Quick run through the FREE recuva software
https://www.piriform.com/recuva
and everything from the immediate last table, and many full and partial recoveries from even EARLIER reformats. As usual Recuva remains the best table-based recovery and it's free.
If you're gonna shell out for something to recover files this is definitely not the right choice.

Has anyone ever gotten RECUVA to work? Phase 1 ran for 12+ hours and completed and then stopped, never going on to phase 2 or 3 nor producing any report.

I have a Seagate Expansion portable drive. Tried to read it on a Win XP, Win 7 and Win 8.1 computer. All failed. So I thought this product looked interesting since all three computers kept asking if I wished to format the drive. So today I said yes. What the heck. Can't read it anyway.

Then I installed today's Giveaway despite Norton putting up a fuss.

So I can now tell everybody that this software did not work. The problem is it gives me a choice of drives F,G,H or I. That is no good for me because my USB slots or P and Q. The software has no means of changing it to the drive that I want sadly.

Should have just listened to Norton. It knows what's best. ;-)

Installed with no problems onto a thumb drive I use to recover files if needed . Tried it out on two different drives . A thumb drive that had been mistakenly formatted and was pleased to see those pictures I thought were lost forever pop back up . I also tried to recover files from a SD memory card that had been lying around for a while and could not be read by my laptop with win 7 , but unfortunately the computer or the program couldn't find the card so no luck there but a score on the lost pictures far outweighs any disappointment with the memory card . the program ran easy with the options clearly accessible and easy to understand even for a novice like me . Give it a try , the price is right .

It claims that it can recover deleted files from re-formatted drive but most of the times it failed to do so, was not even able to show a list of recoverable files after scanning.

A few powerful free programs are there for recovering data from formatted drive -

* Puran File Recovery - Very effective program , can recover files from formatted disk or even from Pen Drives, Memory Cards etc. ( proved )

* PhotoRec
another superb program for recovering files from formatted disks.

And for recovering files from scratched CD's or defective hard disks there is Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier ( http://www.roadkil.net/program.php?ProgramID=29 ).

What I have observed If the drive has been wiped by any wiper program recently then the chance of getting any file back is almost null.

Some general purpose file recovery programs -

(*) Undelete 360 ( My Favourite )

(*) Recuva -Portable - A popular Program from well known developer Piriform.

(*) WinUtilities Free Undelete - It has the explorer based GUI. A handy tool , in certain cases I find it more powerful than Undelete 360 and Recuva. Moreover It can help you to retrieve files inside locked folder in case you lost the password.

(*) iCare Data Recovery

(*)PC INSPECTOR File Recovery

Some Tips to be followed :

1) Firstly don't install this type of undelete programs to disk from which you want to recover files right now. Install it to usb thumbdrive if no other disk is available.

2) To prevent the deleted files to be overwritten, you should avoid any use of the disk where the file was deleted, until after the deleted file is recovered.
Though you may not be able to do it most of the time.

3) Try to keep your hard disk in good shape by periodically defragmenting it. This will increase the chanches of file recovery

@tommo,

For me there is no issue with the downloaded zip file of "TESTDISK & PHOTOREC" , It is a command-line program but seems it is really capable to do some serious job.
Thanks @Jahid , Nice Recommendation, Keep the Good work up.

It *might* be that a compatible version of the Microsoft c/c++ runtimes is not installed, or it might be a problem, e.g. some sort of conflict with some process or app that's running, that causes that error message.

Depending on how much trouble you want to go to...

In my XP Mode VM, Process Explorer [Sysinternals] shows SoftOrbits Flash Drive Recovery using msvcr90.dll. That doesn't necessarily mean that's the only version that will work, or that that's the preferred version, only that that's the version it uses in that VM. You can check Windows Control Panel -> Programs & Features in win7, & that will show you the runtimes that have been installed using Microsoft's setup programs -- newer versions of Windows are similar -- this will probably not include c/c++ runtime files that were added without using Microsoft's installers.

If you want to try [re]installing one or more of the runtimes there's a list here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2977003

Always check Windows Update after installing one of these runtimes, particularly if the installation was part of a program install.

Alternatively, &/or if that doesn't work, maybe the easiest way to find if there's a conflict is to stop every non-essential app, process, or service from running. TO do that you might try & use Task Mgr, or Process Explorer, the Services app in Control Panel -> Administrative Tools, or Msconfig.
