Giveaway of the Day - Process Lasso 6.0

Automate – Optimize – Take Control! Process Lasso is NOT yet another task manager. It is a process, power profile, and CPU optimization utility. One of Process Lasso’s most popular features is a unique technology called ProBalance (Process Balance). It can improve your PC’s responsiveness and stability during high CPU loads. Windows, by design, allows programs to monopolize your CPU without sufficient restraint – leading to hangs and micro-lags. ProBalance intelligently adjusts the priorities of running programs on-demand so that badly behaved processes are less likely to negatively impact the responsiveness of your PC. It does this NOT by raising process priorities, but instead by temporarily lowering the priorities of background processes that may be interfering with PC responsiveness. It can also perform other operations on these processes, such as adjusting their I/O priorities or CPU affinities.

Another popular feature is called Energy Saver. It switches the active Power Profile after you have gone idle for mere seconds (configurable). This allows you to run your PC in the High Performance power profile, yet conserve power when you aren’t active.

Want to disallow a process from ever running? Done.

In addition to these, there are countless features allowing the user to take full automated control of the processes on their PC. You can have a wide range operations performed, or settings applied, each time a process is run.

Most recently added are memory priorities (Vista+), along with the ability to set them permanently.

  1. Pros
*Tons of optimization options including: default CPU affinities, energy saver options, foreground boosting, process classification, gaming mode, hyper-threaded core avoidance, disallowed processes, default priorities, and more
*Easily switch between Power, Balanced, and Energy Saving modes
*Comes pre-configured to work out-of-the-box with no settings customization — install it and go
*Has an always-free version and paid version

    Cons
*Noticeable learning curve. If you want to customize any settings, it will take some time to get used to the program — primarily due to the terminology, primarily due to the interface, and primarily due to so many bloody options.

  3. Freeware alternatives to Process Lasso 6.0: Process Tamer

Process Tamer is a tiny and efficient utility that runs on your system tray and constantly checks the CPU usage of other processes. When it sees a process that is overloading your CPU, it reduces the priority of that process temporarily, until its CPU usage returns to a reasonable level.
