It works.

With so many video converters out there, not much to say about it. But its not the best. Just a bit messy.

I suspect I must have installed something after this which broke it, but I’m damned if I can think of what that would be. I put very little software on this machine. I guess I should go look at some datestamps and try to work it out…

The only thing I had installed after this was Photoshop 5.5 (reinstalling my old copy because my original porty where I usually use it died this week), but it looks like one of the dlls from "MP3 Recorder Studio" installed last week from GAOTD has a timestamp from when the bad stuff started happening, so I'll be looking into that quite closely too.

This initially worked fine for me on Vista (32 bit - Walmart BF Acer 5315 portable) but two days later I started getting errors about "COM Surrogate has stopped working" and then the converter started blowing away when you started it. I followed the advice in this article: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/fix-for-com-surrogate-has-stopped-working-error-in-vista/ and also added VideoConvert.exe to the exception list, and got it working again. However I can only convert to mpg, rmvb and vmv - the avi and mov conversion *seem* to run but don't generate any output.

I suspect I must have installed something after this which broke it, but I'm damned if I can think of what that would be. I put very little software on this machine. I guess I should go look at some datestamps and try to work it out...

It's a shame because when it worked, it was great (and their previous DVDCopy giveaway has performed flawlessly). I converted HD video from my shiny new christmas present (Samsung HD recorder) to play on my other shiny new christmas present (JXD301 mp4 and game player) :-) (Thank you Santa)

By the way can you generate ASF files with this? The Plato web page seems to say you can but I don't see it in the software.

The audio and video are often out of sink. This makes it so often the same video has to be converted two or three times before it is usable. Some just have to be sent to another converter to get it right. .....This makes this one worth about as much as free but no more.

Does anyone know of a cheaper or free alternative to Nero Vision? I want to take a 700+ MB Windows Movie or DIVX or XVID and put it to DVD format (4 gig) written to a DVD. But Nero is $80 or so.

I thought this was gonna do it, but then realized it's only the converter.

There is a MUCH BETTER and free alternative to this program, which is eRightSoft's SUPER. While most converters can convert from, let's just use an example... AVI to RM, they can't convert the other way around. Sorry GAOTD, but I don't think I'll be keeping this one.

(Does anyone think $30 is rather expensive for a program which is only 12 MB? I mean, SUPER is more than 25 MB...)

-computer software isn't priced like pototoes - according to weight :)

It can not support any video format. Also, it has very slow conversion speed. I really like someone which can run on my new Vista Os. I have tried some called Ultimate video converter, it is much better than this software.

I read comments up to 84, then installed, activated the program - and was not able to do a conversion to MPEG, to AVI - when tried 35 min file - got HDD working for ever with no patience to wait. Cut the clip 3 min - worked long time and produced sound only - such a disappointment!

I am not a computer novice, but I envy those guys who wrote shining comments. To me this software looks like a disaster.

This software looks great and the installation went smoothly. It doesn't seem to address the need for an IFO to anything useful (MPEG-4 preferred) format converter though. Does anyone know of a good one, preferably but not necessarily free, that will work on Win XP or Vista? Thanks

You said it works well is freeware and you are too lazy to read the other comments.

It isn't freeware. You are being supplied for 24 hrs a license w/o any support so that you can install it without paying. Not the same. The support e-mail address is also invalid.

Other comments suggest that its conversions are actually not of good quality.

Others can not get it to run and why would you want software that installs part of Windows Media 9 that is very out of date?

Must review my earlier positive remarks on Plato.

My initial avi-to-mov convert worked fine, as I mentioned before.

But>>>

Any further attempts to convert *any other type of file* failed miserably, with constant Windows error messages & even when the file *appeared* to convert OK to 100%, when I tried to launch it I got Quicktime error which said I was missing codecs which Apple's site couldn't supply me with/ bad. No other converted files I tried worked either & the Desktop folder I had downloaded them to failed to open & caused a system crash>>>only fixed when I uninstalled the whole program.

Disappointed.

I'm going to stick with the tried & true Super...also dvdvideosoft.com which has more varied converters than anyone will probably ever need - all free & clean, ASFAIK :)

Try NoteTab Light, an extremely versatile little program.

Open a new document (eg. "RegCodes" ), click on "Document" in toolbar, click on "Use as Paste Board" (Shift+Ctrl+P).

I posted comment #41. I tried a few things but could not get it to work.
Apparently this program is working for some people and perhaps there is something on my computer that is preventing (or should I say crashing) the program. For instance, I have windows xp and windows media player 11 but when I installed the program it installed windows media 9 run time files. I am wondering if that has anything to do with this issue. One thing is clear to me: The program is crashing upon starting because there is some dependency that is not present (or incompatible) on my computer. An error message [generated by the program] would have been helpful.

Installed oK on windows xp. It does convert some files but I needed to convert MOV to some other file type. It will not convert the .MOV files from digital camera or other sources.

It does convert from other file types but not the one I need.

Seems others can convert MOV files Ok and website says it can convert them but does not on my computer.

I LOVE THIS !! !! I have been looking for something to convert .avi for so long i gave up! So what i did was copy about 10 files (some verrry large old 3 Stooges movies, even) to another folder (just in case) and then loaded up Plato and walked away. Bam! it was done much quicker than i thought. None of this hours and hours of waiting. And i didnt even make any adjustments in the settings. I just used the default settings. Also, thanks to all those that left other soft ware sites in case my PC crashes and i lose Plato. Drag and drop would have been just an extra perk.

Converts at a reasonable speed compared to other converters.

P.S. I install some GiveAways on my pendrive usb 4GB drive in Vista Ultimate O.S. and that works fine, yet I load up XP O.S. and they are unregistered when ran from pendrive in that O.S. but now that i have the bugs worked out of my Vista system and all my peripherals running fine with it I will use it mostly anyway. Hope this helps some... <(__)~

Hello - I have downloaded & installed on VISTA but noted that their web site does not claim that this works on Vista. So, I am ready for a gotcha when I use it. At least parts of program likely will not work. Too early to tell.
I would like to THANK PLATO software for making this and a few other programs available recently. I always troll the manufactures web site prior to download & install anything. I noticed a couple of other programs they sell. When I have need of such software, I am likely to look at their software First as a result of their offering some free samples!

This did exactly what I needed to - allowed converting videos recorded with Fraps (at least on my primary computer.)

I did run into quirks, where the application incorrectly stated that the conversion was done successfully (such as when you specified an incorrect or unusable output path - which happened to be default.) The output for most options is limited 30 FPS, but at least it makes output that other applications can recognize.

It's not the best utility, but it worked.

@JACK HAMMER:
Cut-and-paste worked fine.

Two requests:

1. Would GOTD-staff please mark their edits in posts here as such. As a forum admin I hate these "anonymous edits". Thanks!

2. @Jack Hammer, who makes as much noise as his name cousin (aka "kangaroo"): Don't yell at us, we can hear you... About your problem.. Copy and paste? Sounds familiar? Then please use them. Do I sound annoyed, irritated? That's because I am, I always am after reading a post almost entirely in caps.

In general: Programs tend to get better, better, worse, better, etc. etc. If they wouldn't be offered here, you wouldn't have the chance to test them (which, and this has been written many, many times before, is the prime reason why these offers exist here), and how whould you know that program X now is a little, much more, better than program Y, not to mention program Z?

A couple of quick notes: first of all, I rate this product 6.5 out of 10.
Now my reasoning:
I've used every feature I could find, and recoded 4 films per setting set. Sources:
HD 9Mbs Video 3Mbs audio
Standard high resolution film, 2Mbs Video 1Mbs audio
Standard film 900Mbs Video 400Kbs audio
TV Rip 320Kbs Video, 128Kbs audio

1) The MPEG video conversion is seriously lacking. The encoder used does not allow for the modification of video bitrate. I'm sorry, but I don't want my DVD conversion from a 8.9Mbs video file to be recoded to a 3Mbs file, nor a 900Kbs. Let ME chose the video bit-rate. I understand the standards used are for ease of use, but an "advanced" option or setting would be useful, and bump the score up to a 9/10.
2) The MPEG Audio converter is also lacking. There is no reason to limit the audio rate to just 224Kbs. A little flexibility is a necessity. Please. I prefer 128Kbs for lesser films, and 1Mbs for high end/high quality films.
3) No screen manipulation allowed. HELLO! The tiny little box that appears on a screen at 1640X1080 or 1680X1050 is just way to small to be used. I click on the edge, to drag the size larger, nope! Nothing.
4) No support for existing encoders. I paid well for my encoder set. Adobe, Aone, and UT all allow me to use existing encoders to create better/faster output. Why should I be limited to slow, outdated, sub-par encoders that don't even give me some ability to work with in regard to bitrate!??
Overall)
This is a great IDEA, but it is lacking at the moment. Anyone with an hour of time to kill could read a little and tinker with VirtualDub or VirtualDubMod to reach the point of near-mastery. For users like myself, there's even a legitimate VDub X64 edition with full support for 64-bit code. VDub does everything can, with one extra download (KLite Mega Codec pack or Everything Decode/Encode Package) do everything that this program does, and everything this program should do. Sorry, but for the same price, a user could get a superior 1-click solution from Ultra Video Converter, with far more flexibility AND support for a dozen different subtitle formats, and for free, could learn to use powerful VirtualDub variants. This is just not up to par yet.
