I ask is evernote 11/15 the most downloaded program in the history of
giveaway, because that's what I heard on a deals site. If it is I wanted to post it on the site and you would probably a five-fold increase in the evernote portable version.

@#136: Sorry to be in disagreement but EverNote has been certified and "awarded" as completely virus and spyware free software by a variety of respectable sites (if our own extensive QA doesn't look sufficient :)); let me quote one of them:

"EverNote" has been tested in the Softpedia labs using several
industry-leading security solutions and found to be completely clean
of adware/spyware components.
We are impressed with the quality of your product and encourage you to keep these high standards in the future.

"EverNote" was tested on 08 December 2007 by Olivian Puha. More
information about your product's certification and the award is

LK, I have a question: Why does LocalWebsiteArchive http://aignes.com/lwa.htm, which seems to do everything evernote does, work perfectly when I use my opera browser, while evernote and similar apps say it cannot be done -- I know that opera doesn't let coders use its html or something, but LWA seems to be just like evernote, even allowing one to install on a portable jumpstick --- but it does automatically copy from opera? Am I missing something? Thanks, btw, for being the first two-day download I'm aware of -- but I love my opera browser's speed, lightness and stability and hate the thought of using another browser just to have evernote's capability. But please let me know why you cannot support opera.

jsn... Please stop. You're embarassing yourself.

local = 127.0.0.1

If you think you can hack my computer using that address, go right ahead. I will open up a port with no security on it whatsoever. That's what profoundly difficult means. That's what impossible means.

Stop the scaremongering.

Thanks :-)

As for “The impossible scenario” (#128). LK, you really need to take another look at the Hackers Digest :-)

Or just look back at your own writings in post #125: “It is profoundly difficult to harm your data from outside using local ports” - You really think hackers stop because it’s difficult? I sorry to disillusion ate you, but - that the teaser, mate :-)

As to your final remark, I also won’t be addressing this issue anymore. I’ll use my time to explore the rather extraordinary program you’ve so generously donated here - twice.

A Happy New Year to you all!

Mr. LK has been very forthcoming and helpful here. I wish all software companies had employees like him. The rudeness of some of the posters here is pathetic. If you have such a huge problem with the program, don't use it. To keep pounding the same questions over and over, when they've been more than adequately answered, is ridiculous.

Dear Mr. LK, had you been forthright in your INITIAL and SUBSEQUENT explanations about the "server port" situation, there would not have been continuing dialogue. Had you INITIALLY explained the workaround and reasoning and not given inaccurate explanations, only further raising suspicion, this topic would have been dead a long time ago.

In my opinion, you are the only writer who owes an apology, and that is for being either wrong and/or deceptive.

#128: LK seems to be VERY confident in how they soon will become "big shot" software company. Are you now MR. LK?

I think that the two gentlemen testers are VERY helpful TO EVERYONE who cares to follow this here little thread.

I can see that MR. LK is shooting his/her nose high up with no reason whatsover!!!!!!!!!

I appload the active assistance that MR. LK tries to convey between the developers and the "amateur" testers here with this free giveaway, but even if all of you in EverNote Corporation might be upset about hints of security traps in Evernote, well that is just a VERY real threat in ALL of today's software offerings!

Keep up this very good communication and excellent effort! Let's make this Evernote a very good and SECURE product.

@#126: As we explained, local ports are called "local" because the scenario described in your post #126 is impossible.

We consider it a mild disrespect to participants of this forum to make them repeatedly read on this very special subject.

We also find it a disrespect to our company (who takes the effort to offer its popular commercial software for free and support this forum) to make us spend extra time explaining what is obvious to most programmers, and especially voice completely wrong and unfounded suspicions. Please set the variable EnableLocalSyncServer in the file ENOptions.xml to zero.

We will not comment on this subject anymore and think that a couple writers on this thread owe an apology to the readers.

#114: Mike, I hear you, but...

Granting EverNote access to port 10200, potentially enables the EverNote-company to take-a-note of your notes, to read - “listen” to the notes you take.

And since notes typically are of a highly private nature - Your interests, your habits, your preferences etc. can often be derived from the kind of notes you take. And that’s something, I don’t want to sell for the price of a free program!

If the EverNote-company “listens” to your notes, offering it off as free is in fact just business. Information about your habits etc. is probably worth more than $14.95 ;-)

I accepted this in the desktop-version, where I can block it through my firewall, but I must admit that I find it highly problematic in a portable version!

@#121, 122 et al.: We don't consider it a flaw, rather an "undocumented feature" :) It is profoundly difficult to harm your data from outside using local ports... But if you remain uncomfortable, please set the variable EnableLocalSyncServer in the file ENOptions.xml to zero.

@LK no. #115 and 117:
“we had one or two such reports in the past”

That’s strange! I count 2 reports here in this forum (#62, 79), and “with millions of copies of EverNote delivered to end users”, your statement really doesn’t compute!

“we do open local ports for program’s local needs”: I my world a program has no business opening ports, acting as a server and accepting incoming connections . That is, unless I ask it to do so.

Now, I recognize that you have some explanatory problems. I have deleted all notes, and I have disabled the update feature; so there’s no need to refer to these non-points as the cause.

Are we dealing with a program flaw?

I created a new empty database and still get the same issue:

EverNote application (C:\Documents And Settings\Owner\Application Data\Sandbox\Defaultbox\Drive\C\My Evernote Files\Program Files\Evernote.exe) is trying to act as a server and accept incoming connections.
Local Port: 10200
Protocol: TCP

My suspicions are not unfounded, they are based on my Firewall programs reports. FYI, I've already disabled auto upgrade (which would not require a listening port anyway), and I have NO notes in my program.

I am not suspicious by nature but when my firewall says that EN is acting as a server and there is no reason for such behavior in MY program, then yes, I'm a little skeptical.

Maybe it's because I'm running EN in a Sandbox, huh?

All, LK

I am successfully using the following configuration and it is working well for me

Personal computer w/ EN 2.2
Work laptop w/ EN 2.2
EN Portable on USB stick

Both computers set to sync database to the USB stick and back up elsewhere on their local hard drive.

LK,

does this look like a good working configuration, or is there a potential problem lurking for me?

Also noticed that in your dialog/option/settings boxes the ? help/info function does not work.

Thanks a bunch

@#114: Your suspicions are unfounded - we are not trying to steal your info or invade your PC :) - with millions of copies of EverNote delivered to end users, you would agree that it would have been quite a suicidal behaviour on our side. That said, we do have an auto-upgrade mechanism which can be disabled; notes may try to repetitively retrieve resources if they are not available on the target site which can be cured by deleting the unresolved resource links; we do open local ports for program's local needs which cannot be disabled in the existing version.

I scrolled through all the comments but not clear - am I correct to think that this giveaway is not limited to the lifetime of my current Windows installation? I can install this giveaway on C:\ and later can copy it to any other PC or USB stick (since it's portable)? Will I need to copy the directory where I had it installed or the directory that Setup.exe had created (RarSFX0) or just run the same Setup again? The latter is probably not true as that would make it a "giveaway of forever"...

@#112 et al.: yes, shape recognition is also excluded from EverNote Portable; thanks for the correction.

@#109: "Cannot install on/off the hard drive." Hmm... this is not an expected behavior as we are pretty positive that most users have done one of those. If this is still of concern, please contact us directly to resolve.

@#110: EverNote is also trying to open a couple of *local* ports that cannot be used to access the PC from the Internet *in any way*. Still, some overly aggressive firewalls tend to block this, too (which we think is wrong) - we had one or two such reports in the past.

@#103, 104: Yes, it is true that EverNote, ritePen and all state-of-the-art AI technologies incorporated in these products have been developed, for the most part, by Russian-speaking developers on both sides of the pond :)
We are supporting our products not only for Russian-speaking users - GAOTD has presence virtually in every European country and beyond. So, support hours for this important project are defined purely by our physical capabilities :)

#110, I agree. I've deleted ALL notes and emptied the recycle bin and EN is still wanting to act a server. I understand wanting to connect to the Internet, but not acting as a server. Even the EN executive's explanation ["On some occasions, EverNote software may attempt to load network resources present in your Web clips."] doesn't make sense. Suspicious??

@#62, 79, 81, 85 and 89 - Acting as a server and connecting to the internet

I have now deleted all notes and emptied the programs Recycle bin.

EverNote still wants to act as a server and connect to the internet?

If you’re using the portable version on a system without a firewall to block the action, this behaviour is a serious security concern.

#91 I could not install it on my hard drive, or from my hard drive. Did not want it there anyways. What I did was copy the setup.exe and the install.txt file to my flash drive and installed it from there. A box comes up asking where you want the program installed. I told it to download it to "i" drive (flash drive drive letter). It is designed to be used that way. It is very intuitive to use. Or, go to "Help" then "Evernote demo" and watch it. Can be viewed over and over again.

Again, this is the most useful software I have ever downloaded here at GAOTD!!! Everyone can use it even if you use the computer just to play with. I just now put my cut and pasted my guest book in Evernot.e Again I say, I rate it 10 or of a possible 10!!

@#94: Thank you Bruce! It's probably time to "confess" :) that I am an EverNote executive and am responsible for many different areas in our company. The success of our first offering at GAOTD on Nov.15 and the similar discussion on that day convinced us that we should take the second attempt very seriously. So, I've put my other activities aside and tried my best to support all of you at this great site.

We share your view of portability&mobility, which comes in many different flavors: through portable versions of software running from removable media; through mobile versions available on smart and not-so-smart phones (see http://www.evernote.com/products/evernote/technology_preview/ for technology preview of EverNote for Windows Mobile); through Web-based notes available on any desktop in a browser (upcoming). It is our clear plan to make EverNote available via all above-mentioned methods. Thanks again for your good words.

@ALL: Thanks for your encouragement and good words! Please tell your friends that they have another full day for downloading EverNote Portable :)

Once again, if you have specific issues with or questions about installation, opening databases, sync, other features - better write to "feedback at evernote dot com"; sometimes, we need further investigation to efficiently address the issue or respond to your question.

@GAOTD Staff: thanks for your patience - this is quite a discussion!

I'm very happy/excited to get a chance to try out the portable version! of this fine app. I'm also trying to get my mother to try it out, since it would certainly help her a lot (she has a disorder that's damaging her memory & focus)...hopefully she won't reject it simply because it's new.

GAOTD staff, a polite suggestion: considering how often we users end up having trouble with this, a 36- or 48-hour period for registering apps would be very helpful. (Even as you keep offering a new one each day, that is.) Many of us are really only getting a few hours total to download/register between work/school & sleep anyway, so it only takes one or two problems to miss out. Just an idea... :o)

I'd like to thank Dr Rover, #28, for the tip on the holiday pricing of the desktop version. That's very helpful. I don't have a credit card, and I'm not in the US, but I will surely figure something out. I was not whining in #2 about losing the free dsktop version here when my laptop died, as much as letting GITD and Evernote know what a top program they gave us and how much it is missed. Most of other programs lost in that disaster I can live comfortably enough without. This one I've mourned and missed.

And Bruce M, #94, let me second that. I'm often stuck by the echoing void in which our comments here seem to sink, so the visible and helpful engagement by EN staff is refreshing and inspires further confidence.

Thanks again to all. And happy new year.

While I noticed that an Evernote Staffperson (LK) has generously answered many questions, I'd encourage everyone to read up
http://www2.evernote.com/en/products/evernote/en_port_learn_more.php
which gives a useful overview.

I also noticed a "Video tutorial" on the program's capabilities is available at another website: http://www.iambic.com/select/?itemid=216 (search for tutorial in browser window).

Evernote and AcronisTI are, in my opinion, two outstanding products that have come from relatively smaller, yet extremely user-friendly companies. Kudos to Evernote and to GAOTD.

To LK (tireless EverNote employee... ):

As a product manager for another company, I want to thank you for the continuing feedback you have been providing to the people who have asked questions or posted comments in this general area, as well as for the visible fact that you are following all of the postings here.  You are demonstrating to the people who have downloaded your software, whether they have posted a comment, or simply read through what has been posted, that you are concerned about how your software is understood and used.

The value to those of us who download your software is the opportunity to try a new application, for free, that we may not (probably did not) know anything about.  The value to you, as a vendor, is the opportunity to gain a form of feedback that typically is not provided by the average user.  By the frequency, and courtesy, of your postings, you have demonstrated that you understand the value of the comments that have been posted here (whether positive, negative or just asking questions) that too many of the vendors who offer software through GAOTD seem to have missed.  And, I suspect, this level of professionalism, may be why others who said they have purchased your software in the past are so complimentary of your company.

I want to thank you for this level of effort in answering questions and resolving issues that seem to be confusing or unclear, as well as thanking you for making your software available to us through the GAOTD site.  To Slava, BuBBy, and the others at GAOTD, again, a big thank you for coming up with a creative new business strategy at time when many people have been wondering if there were any new ideas left on the Internet for distributing software.

In closing, I've been (pleasantly) exploring the features of your desktop version of EverNote that was offered here on Nov. 15th, and am looking forward to exploring how the portable version operates as well.  As one who travels often, I think the addition of this portable version to your desktop package is nice way of extending your product in a way that will provide us with a level of functionality that I have not seen other vendors consider, or offer, in regards to their software (whether they compete with you, or in general).  Nice job!!

I don't see the UC. Could having Evernote full installed on my PC be the cause. I just installed the portable version only to usb drives.

Hi all,

Can anyone help me out here? I'm quite green to this latest tech stuff.
This sounds like a fantastic piece of software & I would love to be able to make use of it while it is available here, and to learn how to use it to its full potential...
I am currently using a family members PC while away on Xmas Holidays, but would like to be able to use this program on my laptop PC when I get back home.

1) Can I download it onto my family's PC, or somehow have it installed on my external hard-drive &/or a 1Gb flash-drive/memory-stick, which I both have with me, to be used on my laptop when I get back to it?
Is that possible? Would it still work??
2) If not, is there a way for me to make use of this neat program somehow? Is there a way around this??

Your kind help is greatly appreciated.
Cheers and Thanks guys all @ GotD.
Have a great festive season and an even better and more properous New Year to you all!!!

This is the best giveaway I have ever downloaded! Everyone can use this lil utility. This is great!! I can just use it from my flash drives anywhere I want to. Can view my saved stuff on any computer. You can Google it and read raved reviews about Evernote. I cant say anything bad about this great lil program. It does exactly what the description says it will do. I rate it a 10 our of 10!!!
