I found Zoner Studio ran a lot faster in comparison to Photo Lux... well at least on my laptop.

@26, Fubar

Thanks for the comment. Prior to reading what you had to say in comment number 26 I had decided not to download Photo-Lux. I made that decision because of a comment that said Photo Lux changed previous file associations. I changed my mind after reading your comment (26) that said Photo-Lux would / could easily return file associations to their previous settings.

I appreciate the fact that you gave today program more than a cursory look. It is a shame that you rescuing comment came late in the day. I would imagine that many others besides myself decided not to download today's offering because of a comment saying that Photo Lux changed file associations and implied that one would have to manually return the association of each file to its prior program setting.

#5 and #6, I had the same problem in Firefox when clicking on my bookmark. The problem I had was that my bookmark pointed to "giveawayoftheday.com" and for firefox to work correctly I had to manually change the link to "www.giveawayoftheday.com"

#8 Bubba, how unproffesional of you to make a comment like that. Firefox is far more superior than IE and IMO Google Chrome is far better than both.

Indeed, the software makes itself the default. But having said that, onecan easily click on Preferences and Settings and Unselect All, or do as oneso pleases. For some, you would like to leave PSD extension ticked, asphotoshop takes a lifetime to load, even if it is just to view an image. Or forthose who does not have Photoshop, you can now view psd files.Below is a screenshot for easy explanation:

#22, OutDesigns, instead of the histrionics, read my comment #7. I always check for changes to file associations. If you'd bothered to actually use Photo-Lux, you would have discovered that it can restore your file associations quite easily.

As a serious amateur photographer, I have tried all the "free" software, but keep coming back to Photoshop. Yeah, you have to pay for it, but all the rest of the wannabes are not even close when it comes to power and ability. I am a member of three photo clubs and have won 17 ribbons, including 5 first place ribbons in the past year. I am not about to start playing around with some program that is less than what I have.

It does nothing that I cannot do with free programs, the slide show is a waste of time,it should not set itself as the default editor/viewer without permission. The best feature was the uninstall.

A GENERAL WORD OF CAUTION:During the installation of today's GAOTD program, all of your "image-rights" configurations are over-written. . . . In other words, this program (without ANY permission or authorization from the individual installing it) sets itself as your DEFAULT program to open all image-type files and more.Photo-Lux sets itself as the "Default" for these file types:1. all General Image files (gif, jpeg, tiff . . . etc)2. all Raw image files (J2K, ERF, MFF, etc)3. all Photoshop files (PSD, PDD, etc.) 4. all Windows Cursor files (CUR)5. all Windows Icon files (ICO, etc)6. all Raster files (TGA, TARGA, etc.)The program changed the permissions of over 40 of my files types, including several customizations that had been created for special editing of professional photography.Thumbs-Down to ANY program which takes it upon itself to steal file-permissions (other than files which are exclusive to the program itself). To me, this indicates a complete and total disregard for the user. Come on developers! . . . Do you honestly think that your users will stand for such behavior in today’s software world? I feel like I'm back in the '90s. The "customer" should be the LAST person you wish to upset, and this type of behavior instantly causes the user to become suspicious (and this was merely during the installation process!). It's 2010 now . . . and this type of problem should never (ever) happen with software of any type.Because of this behavior, the program was immediately un-installed and thrown in the trash.

FastStone Image Viewer is a fast, stable, user-friendly image browser, converter and editor. It has a nice array of features that include image viewing, management, comparison, red-eye removal, emailing, resizing, cropping and color adjustments. Its innovative but intuitive full-screen mode provides quick access to EXIF information, thumbnail browser and major functionalities via hidden toolbars that pop up when your mouse touches the four edges of the screen. Other features include a high quality magnifier and a musical slideshow with 150+ transitional effects, as well as lossless JPEG transitions, drop shadow effects, image annotation, scanner support, histogram and much more. It supports all major graphic formats (BMP, JPEG, JPEG 2000, animated GIF, PNG, PCX, TIFF, WMF, ICO and TGA) and popular digital camera RAW formats (CRW, CR2, NEF, PEF, RAF, MRW, ORF, SRF and DNG).

You Needn’t Surf Further For This Verdict:

As far as an image viewer goes then today’s GOTD is no doubt a full featured program. KudrSoft did not put it out as a waterdowned tool where the marketing intent is to tease the user to going for a let’s say advanced version of the same program. However, when it’s put up in same category as freeware heavyweights Irfanview, PhotoScape, & FastStone I just really find it difficult to justify shelling out even its sale price of $19.99 (plus tax depending where you are, I think). As a GOTD it’s absolutely worth a download. Afterall, as the saying goes, “one person’s gold is another person’s trash (discretionary word substitutions allowed). And if for nothing else the number of file types it supports is mindboggling. Is that really a major plus? I don’t think so. Does it justify KudrSoft’s bragging rights about that capability? Sure, it does what it does.

@#3 Jason Carver – Incidentally, Photo-Lux Image Viewer offers 10 more transition effects than FastStone does. There are some other differences, but that’s something you can easily discover on your own....

"This supports Auto rotating, which I hope means that it can automatically arrange my photos."

Depends upon what you mean by "arrange." Standard usage for auto-rotation in graphics programs is to rotate photos taken in portrait mode 90° so they don't display on their "sides." Is that what you mean by arrange?

Does what most freeware programs do and I found nothing special to attract me in using it. Basic filters were slow to react on a 4mb sized file.

If you are only going to use ONE image editor ... this is probably not for you. HOWEVER if you are an avid photo manipulator/enhancer/refinisher as I am ... I use a variety of editors and find that each has one feature that works better than others. And in my arsenol of photo editing programs .... this one is WELCOME!!!! And will be used for it has strengths!

Jason Carver, I use Faststone Image Viewer exclusively for picture viewing and have never found anything that comes close to doing what Faststone will do, better than Faststone does it. However, to answer your question about what Photo-Lux says it will do that Faststone does not do, -- I do not use RAW format, -- but I don't think Faststone will work with RAW does it?

As of the time of this post, only three comments have cleared moderation, none helpful.

"Significantly inferior to Zoner Photo Studio, another recent GOTD giveaway."
ZPS is a photo studio, like it says, not an "extended image viewer", and costs much more.

"After trying this program I found it to be a fairly basic photo editing program. I can honestly say that Photoscape has all this plus more and it’s for free."
I can honestly say that you haven't compared the two at all.

"Can anyone elaborate what this can do that Fast Stone Image viewer cannot do?"

Image viewers/editors are all different, with different features. There's no harm in installing Photo-Lux, as long as you clear the file associations (you may need to right-click Photo-Lux and Run as Administrator), which it unfortunately appropriates at installation time, but it can restore them. While Photo-Lux has some interesting features, the UI is poor, and it's somewhat slow. You'll also need to test under what circumstances it modifies the original file. It does support a broad range of file types. ZPS supports a pretty broad range of file types. PhotoScape supports few file types, and is very slow. FastStone has a good UI, supports multiple monitors, and supports a fair number of file types, but not as many as Photo-Lux. IrfanView supports a large number of file types.

The question isn't which is "better", but which suits your needs at the moment. Would I pay for Photo-Lux? No, not considering all of the alternatives. Would I install it today? Yes, I did, because one of its features or file formats might be useful in the future.

After experiencing a 502 Bad Gateway via FireFox, I proceeded to download Photo-Lux 3.6 from their web page. IMHO this program faces a lot of competition from pay-for programs such as Zoner PhotoStudio (various versions given away here on GOTD not long ago) to a big bunch of excellent freebies such as Ashampoo Commander6, FastStone, Magix Photo Designer, XnView etc. Most free photo programs offer some form of slide show and scanning ability (Twain) IrfanView & XnView for example.
To be honest, the only reason I have downloaded this program was because of its ability to import RAW files (Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, Mamiya etc) which as any professional or enthusiast digital photographer will tell you, RAW is much more versitile than utilising jpgs. However, since my other programs also handle RAW files very well, I see no presonal benifit in keeping today's offering. However, your needs may well be different to mine so here's a chance to at least give it a try - it is after all, free today. Thanks to GOTD & Kurdsoft.

Yes I know this post is not that helpful , but then again the program I mention is what I use, and the functions that the giveaway mentions are very similar to what I use alternatively.
