"I bought my copy from Amazon and it came complete with two software suites iLfe and iWork for less than $125. To buy the same functionality in windows would easily cost many times that amount and you still would be stuck with Microsoft’s activation issues when you change the hardware."
now that's just silly. in 2004, I bought xp sp2 at frys for $80 + tax. everything else on the pc is freeware or opensource (not even goatd ware!). {exception: specialized pro ware that has no equivalent on other oses}.

activation is not a problem. it connects and you're done. only activation limits are: change your motherboard less than 120 days after last activation. But if so, (per googling) you can then phone MS, and your new pc is activated.
http://www.google.com/search?q=xp+activation+limits+change+motherboard+120+days+-vista+devices+
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.php
just like apple's preinstalled OS, if you buy OEM preinstalled OS, the license dies when the pc dies (mobo). However, (per much googling) you can install some semi-generic oem os (dell, imac, etc) onto similar oem hardware (dell, imac, etc). This can be useful when you're simply missing the cd, yet still own the OS license/key for the computer.

windows is most customizable. (linux can switch among many ui's, but customizing is crude). windows is more usable for more specialties. (from what i've read) mac is still popular for vid editing. for just basic internet, word processing, and backups, linux is best cuz it's free/donationware. mac is best for noobz cuz it's less dangerous than windows. free support for Linux distros tends to be difficult for noobz.

of course linux, reactos, haiku, beos, syllable, icaros, etc etc, are free desktops, but linux is not as usable (and i haven't yet tried the others :-) ) I'm hoping chromeos will improve linux desktop usability (while configging will be able to block google's certain privacy negatives)

"august 6" has marketing significance cuz aug 2009 is near snow leper (10.6) release, therefore paragon may soon sell leper-compatible version to users who tried the goatd version.
btw, amazon has leopard (or maybe snow leper presale?) single seat for $30 and family 5 seat $50 (or $60? i don't recall). nice low price, but you have to install it on something :-) i'd like to find a tiger cd for < $30

Since I've been using a Mac most of the time lately, I've not been checking GAOTD as much as I likely should... and missed this.

It does sound interesting, though, and should I see it again, I'll grab it, and if it does prove to be a good addition, will recommend it to other Mac users who would benefit from it.

NTFS 3G + MacFuse and NTFS for Mac have comparable read speed, but as for write operations - 3G leaves much to be desired. The root cause is that it works in userspace, while Paragon's NTFS driver - in kernel mode. Just have a look at comparison chart - http://www.paragon-software.com/export/sites/paragonsoftware.com/docs/NTFS4Mac_ProductPerformance_05.pdf

First, earlier today this offer was the PC version 8.5, now I see it is for Mac.I must say YAY! Finally they came out with aMac giveaway!. I have both OS so\I could use some Mac freebies. Thank You GAOTD for giving away Mac SW.
For those of you who are complaining about a Mac freebie, you should have gotten here earlier. This is the first Mac giveaway I've seen in a long time and I am thankful they are including this. How many PC versions of a CD/DVD/Video ripper/converter do we need, and they do the same for other types of SW. It is great that they offer us this free software, so if you miss a day of PC because a Mac SW is given away, just take a deep breath and say to yourself "there will be another program tomorrow."

Here's a followup to my previous post #15. I installed it and registered it with no problem. I connected a USB NTFS drive and copied a word document and a jpg file to the drive. I then successfully downloaded and used both files on both a mac and windows (7 if it makes any difference) machine.

So, thanks to both Paragon and GAOTD for the opportunity.

Great offering, thanks GAOTD!
Some observations:
- this software let you read AND WRITE to NTFS partition (Leopard can only read to NTFS partitions)
- if you have a BootCamp partition - like me - the support for the Startup Disk is broken: you need to set the startup disk from the Paragon NTFS Preference Panel

@Richarde Hempstampntington: what are you talking about? There are loads of software utilities for Mac. More than I could reasonably even try or evaluate, never mind afford, for sure.

And Apple has no grip whatsoever on what gets released for the Mac. Maybe you're thinking of the iPhone? Just look at this app - there's another, free version called MacFUSE available.

This isn't 20+ years ago, the Mac is a real option these days - this app alone should demonstrate that people can run both environments, which automatically makes it more flexible.

On topic; the new version is 7.0, I wonder what the differences are?

I'd bought this program back when it was version 6.1. It caused some initial kernel panics the first week it was installed, but then it "settled down" and now works nicely. (Actually, it has some problems with USB-based NTFS drives, but not internal ones, like my Boot Camp partition). Think I'm going to check this out and see if 6.5 is any different.

Thanks a million for taking the first step to a Mac GAOTD!!!!!!!!!!!

BIG thumbs up for offering Mac software GAOTD!

NTFS for OSX is a great product in principle, but unfortunately it fails in the one instance I need it. Specifically, I have a WD TV media center with which I attach a 1TB NTFS formatted external hard drive will all my media files. Unfortunately, any files that I dump onto the drive from my Mac using NTFS for OSX are corrupted so that the WD TV can no longer read them. The files work fine when I dump them on the drive using other methods.

There's no way GOTD is going to be able to offer Mac software once a week - there isn't that much third-party Mac utility software. One because it isn't necessary... but two, because Apple keeps such a tight grip on what it takes to run on a Mac. Flexibility is the principal reason Windoze won the platform war 20+ yrs ago.

After 22 comments, not a single person has posted an actual comment about how it works for them. If you don't use a Mac or OS X, why do you bother commenting? What part of "Giveaway Of The Day" implies that it's "Only For Windows"?

It's nice that marketers are finally realizing that a good number of folks DO have BOTH types of machines, and file transfer between them is a big problem.

To say "it's not Windows so I don't care" ... if you DID have a Mac, you'd understand the problem with file transfers between Macs and Windows boxes! #17 nailed it -- FAT32 limits you to 2GB files, meaning that if you use your Mac for what Macs are best at, you're going to have a difficult time transferring those huge files over to Windows boxes via any kind of direct saving. It requires you to have a file server set up in your house. How many folks have that? What's wrong with thumb drives?

Open Source software solutions are "ok", but the ability to READ + **WRITE** is important. That lets you create things on your Mac (which is usually the case) and move them to your Windows boxes. Who wants to create things on their Windows boxes and move it to their Mac? :) Why, when the Mac software is so much BETTER?!

I am a profesional software developer. The "big boss" where I'm working now recently brought her husband to the office, and he asked some of us what kind of "PC" he should get, since his recently died. It turns out the every single one of the developers where I work -- and we write Windows software -- has AT LEAST ONE Mac at home, and every one of us prefers the Mac to our Windows boxes! I'm writing this on my Mac, in fact. Some of us even use our Macs for Windows software development.

I too would like to see GOTD offer more Mac software.

As one who has both Mac and Windows computers I appreciate a Mac app. I am amazed at the reaction of some Windose users to GAOTD Surely you can't begrudge an occasional day when you don't get a new toy to play with.
Not sure I am going to download this one, but I have definitely alerted friends who use Parallels or Boot Camp.

Awesome that you have offered a Mac App! Thank you!!! This one does have actual value as accessing a NTFS partition is usually a Read Only/Copy feature because of the security protocols of the OS (NTFS). Nice to be able to run a commercial solution, not that there is anything wrong with MacFuse, yes it does work, but am more than willing to try another Paragon product. Thanks again.

Having recently built a Hackintosh and having seen why the Mac OS is hands down much nicer than any Windows OS including Seven Ultimate, I have an open mind. I currently dual boot if needed between Windows 7, Ubuntu 9.04 and Mac 0S X. In Mac OS X I also run the other two simultaneously in OS x windows using VMWare using two 1.5 TB drives.

I have had a problem in moving data between these OS as the only common file system they can all read and write is Fat32. The problem is that large video files and DVD Isos exceed 2GB. Fat 32 does not allow for files that large. Until now I had avoided solutions that allowed a non native file system to be read and written to out of fear they would mess up the other OS. I trust Paragon and have bought their products. I was not aware of their solution until today.

GOTD allows me to test Paragon's software om the Mac side which I think is perfect. If it is any good I am going to have to buy it anyway in a month with the release of OS X Snow Lepoard as there would be no free upgrade from the GOTD version.

It makes perfect business sense why Paragon would make this offer today August 6, 2009. Thank you GOTD.

One note of caution, install this before upgrading OS X and check its operation. Apple released a minor point upgrade yesterday August 5, 2009 to OS X and there may be a compatibility problem with this software with that OS X upgrade. It is sort of like the point upgrades to the iPhone and iPod Touch.

BTW if I had to choose only one OS to use exclusively the Apple OS X would win in a heartbeat and that is after using it for only a month!
I bought my copy from Amazon and it came complete with two software suites iLfe and iWork for less than $125. To buy the same functionality in windows would easily cost many times that amount and you still would be stuck with Microsoft's activation issues when you change the hardware.

Interesting

This is a very daring offering from GAOTD team and truly need some courage to take responsibility for.

The offering is for Mac OS X platform, and I hardly can recall that other than Windows application was ever offered.

Although I am not Mac user, I thought of it as a very nice gesture just for the idea of giving some break for those who use Mac OS X or/and probably have multiple OS setups on their Intel machines.

Neat to see someone practice a paradigm shift :)

Cheers
