As a music composer student at the Master's College, this program is so beneficial to me and to my education. Thanks so much, and now all my music major friends are jealous!

I have trouble registering the software. Tried everything all the others have mentioned above : (1) run setup first then activate; (2) activate first then run setup next; (3) did (1) when magicscore was open and (4) did (2) when both magicscore and Word were close and (5) other permutations of (1) to (4). Still the Registration tab says: If you want to use all opportunities of "Magic Score" you have to register. Name: Giveaway of the Day. Serial key [this is blank]. Please exit the program after entering a key! And at the bottom the tab says: Buy Now / Cancel Big Question: How does register this giveaway? Thanks!

For those of you using Office 2007, you only need to click on the Add In button on the ribbon and then click on the small icon at the top of the LARGE button on the Add In ribbon. This will insert the beginning of a staff. Double click the staff and you're ready to go! I had clicked and clicked the large button with no results until I finally moved the cursor over the tiny icon and clicked on it.

I can't figure out how to start this program. There's no desktop shortcut. There's no .exe file in the program folder and no other clear application file except the uninstall file.

I tried opening it from within MS Word, still nothing in the program folder to open it. I tried "insert" in MS Word, nothing from this program shows up as a choice to select.

HOW DO YOU RUN THIS DAMN THING????

To anyone whose been haing problems getting the program to work. Once activated and installed I was initially at a loss as to what to do. Everytime I clicked on the Magicscore object icon that had installed itself into the toolbar after installation all I got was the beginning of a score, but nothing else. I couldn't find anything else that would indicate where I could add notations etc to the score. So I posted a comment above asking if I required other Magicscore programs to run it. All I see from that point on (though not directed at myself) are sarcastic self effacing comments that denigrate other users but nothing really helpful in answering the many questions community members have posted.

Well, thankfully I persevered and found that by clicking on the actual score that appears when you click on the Magic Score object icon the actual program opens up. I hope this clarifies the situation for those who like me were having problems seeing anything but the score lines.

As a regular sibelius user, I am not sure how useful this would be to me or to my students. I use it a lot for various publication projects, as you can see...

http://www.squidoo.com/sibeliuscomposer

Embedding graphics into Word makes for big files and slow transfer. You would most likely then convert your .doc to pdf. You could print music directly from sibelius, finale or any other programme with acrobat distiller or cute pdf as your default printer to produce something much more easily shared via email or webpage.

All the best,

Lisa

OK, I know I'm a late-comer on this. It installed and works in Office 2007 on WinXP SP3. Stiull no registration number, but it says it's registered to Giveaway of the day, that may by how they figured out to allow registration, without allowing updates. I don't know this as a certainty, and haven't seen anything to suggest it, nor do I submit that it is an elegant solution to the issue.
Anyway, there seems to be quite a learning curve on this one, and I'm glad to see that it's not just me.
For everyone that asked about OpenOffice.org, look at this site http://ooolilypond.sourceforge.net/

Same comment as #36. "Giveaway of the day" is shown on the registration screen, but the serial number spaces are blank. I haven't tried to do anything with the program, so I don't know if its capabilities actually are limited as the registration screen indicates, but I have to assume that they are. Does a serial number show on the registration screen on others' successful installations?

RE: System Requirements: There are several different versions of MS Word. Is today's giveaway compatible with ALL of them (with differing file specs, etc.), specifically in my case the one that is in Office XP (2002)? Thanks in advance for clearing this uncertainty. (Note that some people may be still using Office 97, or 95?, with their Win 98.)

This works with Word97, to get it to work click insert, choose object... chose from the list MagicScore object then doubleclick on the object that appear.

The bad thing is that it is NOT written in the begining of the manual, but it stood in the examplefile in the demofile folder.

For the record. It worked on Vista Home Prem, Office 2007 when I tried it. Just wanted to post this since it seems a lot of people can't seem to get it to work.

If you're using Office 2007, you have to click the "Add-in" (or Add-on?) tab to get it to work. See the screenshots that comment #1 posted.

Well...

I just tried uninstalling/re-installing/activating the program the same way I did before and now the "Trial" message is gone. However when I click on registration under help it states "If you want to use all opportunities of 'Magic score' you have to register". Then there is a "Buy Now" link.

So the giveaway appears to only be a crippled version of the authors full program and you would have to pay $99 to get full access to it.

If I have come to the wrong conclusion, please let me know.

I successfully activated after installing, by clicking the MagicScore Object icon, then double clicking the score it put on the page. With the score open I double clicked the activate and selected RUN. When I relaunched, all was good. Hope this helps.

Also...

#1 - I have looked at your review and screen shots. Your screenshot 3 does not say “(Trial)- 30 days of evaluation period remain” in the header line like mine does.

How did you get your program to register correctly? What did you do differently than me?

I have followed the instructions in the readme file (run setup first then activation)and the GAOTD window popped up in my browser stating I had successfully activated the program. But when I open the program in Word it says "(Trial)- 30 days of evaluation period remain" and the score sheet is watermarked "Unregistered".

I have uninstalled/re-installed/activated the program three times with no change in the outcome.

How can I get the registration code to enter myself?

Why don't you folks read the information that comes with it ie. examples.doc which is in the \demos subdirectory.
It explains how to use it by using the "insert object" from the menu.
It also works in textmaker.

Well, maybe I'm being a stickler but their "example" shows an A minor 9 chord marked at the top of the fret board as 002300 but show the finger marks at 002200 plus my guitar chord reference doesn't even correlate with those finger marks as being A minor 9th or A minor add 9 though I don't know whether those chord illustrations are hardcoded or user created. Now, I have not used/installed yet as I'm waiting to see more comments of successful integration into MS Word but this does make me question the quality of this software unless it was a user created mistake of the example, which makes me then question the quality of the company. Please correct me if I'm interpreting this wrong as I don't want to spread undeserved FUD.

It installed fine, and showed up in Word 2007 for me, more or less. Opening the examples.doc gave me an existing object, which had a good right-click menu, but going to the add-ins and clicking on the toolbar control there did nothing.

Extremely unimpressed.

As has been pointed out, this is way to complicated for an "intro" piece of notation software, even the full-line ones (e.g. Sibelius) are much easier to use. I'm not sure why you would embed yourself into Word, since that makes it totally dependent on someone else, and it's not like they didn't design a complete UI anyway. If you want to send notation in a document, it's not hard to save as an image using a real notation app, and then embed the image in your favorite word processor.

#3: You probably did what I normally do and that is skip the readme text file that displays when you install ;).

To use the program just go to the Insert feature in Word and select Object, then scroll down the list and select MagicScore Object.

To edit the object simply double-click on it.

1. Few of my comments get past an error gateway. Will this?

2. The help file with this program does not say the program runs with Vista.

3. Although I have installed and activated the program (and gotten a message saying it's activated) Word 2007 says the program is not installed so it won't allow me to use it as an Add-In. It refuses.

4. I've tried to make sense of the advice in #10, but cannot find a MS button in the upper left corner with the options suggested. Any other ideas for Word 2007?

Thanks.

THE GOODS..
Use Music Notation for MS Word to do the following:
Compose and transpose music.
Produce on-line publications and printed matter.
Print sheet music or publish sheet music in the Internet.
Send Word documents with sheet music to anyone with or without Music Notation for MS Word, even if they don’t have any music notation programs installed.
Be creative with advanced music notation editing features in the familiar Microsoft Word environment.

To art, no it is to activate the set up file. If you don't click on the activate file you will only get a demo version of the software. Sometimes we get combined activation and set up files but usually a seperate activate and set up file like today. Hope this clarifies the situation.

Everytime I see the word obtuse I think Shawshank Redemption, lol.

As for today's program; brilliat. I lost MagicScore to a format sometime ago. We still need to be able to create scores for my childrens music, so this is just what the doctor ordered. Thank you DG Software and the giveaway team for bringing yet more useful software to the masses. :)

regards

I have installed and activated the program several times but cannot get Word 2007 to recognize it as installed, thus, not allowing me to install as an Add-In.

I would sure like this program to run.

Nice idea,
but,
this version (1.520) appears to be a demo
the most interesting functions
Templates, Expression marks, Chords etc..
are 'reserved' for ;
(This feature is available only in the «Maestro» version).
Or maybe I'm missing something.

When I tried to select one from one of the *.dlls, I got a message saying the program was not registered. I am unable to launch the Music Scoring section in Word 2007. Any clues?

Quick verdict: thumbs down.

It may be a great little program, but the interface is much more complicated than it needs to be. I have a ton of experience with music writing software (Finale, Sibelius, Noteworthy, and others) but I always come back to Noteworthy Composer. for it's simple yet robust interface. It is also only $49 verses Finale's lowest piece which is $99 (and others upwards of $500). Noteworthy isn't as feature packed as Finale or Sibelius but Noteworthy's interface is definitely worth the small lack of features.

Here's the link to Noteworthy Software:
http://www.noteworthysoftware.com/

You can install the trail version which has no limits except that when printing, it will include something like "Made with Noteworthy" in the printout and it doesn't allow you to paste in files which were saved by a registered version. FYI: The trial version also has no time/day limit.

PS: in almost all notation software there are keyboard shortcuts. These shortcuts will save you soooooo much time!! Learn them. Use them. Breathe them. ...or if you're using Sibelius, just buy the specially shortcut-labeled keyboard here:
http://www.logickeyboard.com/shop/frontpage.html
