Installed OK on XP SP3. You have to enter the codes that come up to activate it manually. Functionally, it's identical to Cool Edit 2000, which hasn't been available since Adobe took over Syntrillium in 2003, and is good basic software. Having used all the versions of Cool Edit from 96 onwards, I find Audacity fiddly, so it's good to see this interface back on the market again. I'll run it alongside my existing Cool Edit installation and see how it goes.

Well, I'm glad I decided to try to record something before 2:00 AM. I don't remember downloading this before, but I couldn't figure out why I didn't have the options to record. I checked the file location and the readme was not what I downloaded this morning. I registered the product just fine (I thought)earlier today. But when I opened MP3 editor, it said it was a trial. Coincidentally, I did a registry clean-up today, so who knows. But, I just discovered GAOTD maybe 6 weeks ago and I didn't know what I was doing for a while so I missed a lot of stuff I wanted, then I've been downloading trials after the fact. So, I'm glad this is a repeat because I obviously missed the boat the first time. I think this will be pretty useful! Thanks!!!

I can't get the program to install on Vista Home 32 bit. I get the regser32 exception. I did the deal with the DEP, but it still will not register the .dll's. Also changed compatibility to XP and ran as administrator. Still no cigar.

Vista Home Premium : Broken as noted above, crashes the registration server and DLL's won't register.

XP Pro on a Dell P4: Installed, registered, and runs fine. Fairly basic program, should not scare off new comers too badly as some more powerful programs might.

Audio Editor Deluxe has the same functionality but a better name. :)
Gold Wave Editor Pro is very very similar too (with some additional featres). And don't forget the audio editor of iRecordMax Sound Recorder: the same! IMHO all of them use the same code base (maybe a third-party library or something else).

I think Gold Wave Editor Pro is the best because it gives you the most features and options and it has a cleaner interface.

So, thumbs down for MP3 Music Editor.

Inslalled on Windows-95 no prob. Visual editing an audio file with basic operations of cut copy paste delete mix insert and silence here there.

This here can allso be used as a music player to play a audio file or any selection of it.

The waveform window is a very cool dawg and ican zoom the window displayed.

If you dont got it you need too.

@ #37. Wavepad IS free. This is from the makers' FAQ: "The special free version you can download from the product home page is entirely freeware. It will never expire and you can use it free forever. Just make sure to download the free version.

We make it free in the hope more professional or business users will upgrade to the Masters Edition version which is the one we normally sell. The Masters Edition version has a few more features with the professional in mind (check the Help manual of that version to see the additional features)."

I agree with Fubar... the AVSspammers are working the comment board. And it seems that quite a few of the comments of late seem to be more self-promoting than a review of the software. I too, have begun to distrust the comments. It's too bad the integrity of "user comments" is distorted and corrupted by vendors attempting to convince us of how great their software is. If the vendors want to attend to the comments and answer questions posted - Great!, otherwise, don't pretend to review... it's just dis-honest. If the offered software is worthy enough, it will survive... attempted coercion creates a bad reputation that will kill the vendor... hmm... maybe that's why they keep "re-branding"...

I really like the record from the internet radio feature! Thank you GAOTD. I haven’t tried it yet.

It seems that far too many of the possitive, rave reviews that have started to crop up in GAOTD, are too much like people plugging their or their companies product. I like this site a lot but I dont have all the time in the world to test run every single give-away, so value these reviews, but I find myself distrusting them more and more. I know it's probably not GAOTD's fault but what can I do? I have however downloaded this program (XP sp3) and it works really fine, bit on the ugly side though :)

As to the "rebranding" controversy: more than one Whois service is showing the same info., so it's probably the same people. Seems to confirm what others have said. Same program as Audio Editor Deluxe. Whether the previous company is still in business and they're deceptively offering it twice, can't say. But there's the info., so folks are informed.

No "Adam Smith", deception, if that's what we have here, is not the point of capitalism. If you're going to use that great man's moniker, maybe you should delve more deeply into what he said.

Adam Moshe, I googled "editor to work with ape files" and got plenty of hits. You should be able to find what you need. Good luck.

David Roper and others blasting SilverCowboy. I symphathize, BUT, the freeware only posters may be helping some people here, but they're not helping the project stay afloat and they're not helping GOTDs relationship with developers. It's well intentioned, but it's almost spam. Not that I'm saying GOTD is going to go under, but, though you may be helping the few, your not helping the project and the majority who appreciate it. If you want to talk about freeware, why not join the MANY forums that deal with that subject? Better yet, why not join GOTDs, where that info. is ALWAYS welcome. Not that mentioning freeware is bad, but you at least owe GOTD and the community as a whole some type of comparison to today's software. At least compare the feature set. This is not a freeware message board. Really, the moderators should moderate out any comment without some kind of comparison or trial. Just saying.

Moderators, (this is a heads up for you, feel free to edit this paragraph out of the post) this is the second day that Vincent has posted to hawk one of his services. You may want to watch that and ban him if he doesn't contribute anything other than spam.

My friend Giovanni. I'm sorry, that's not a review from Softpedia, that's the developer's description. Softpedia didn't post a review there. That's the developer saying it's "the most complete solution". Thanks for the effort, though.

Going to stay away from today's giveaway. Appears not to be clean enough, Vista problems, lack of instructions, etc. Yes, there appear to be better alternatives.

#21 I agree 100% that Wavepad is great, I've used it on and off, but unless I'm seeing something wrong on that site, Wavepad isn't free. But worth paying for if you have the bucks. Their software (NCH) is top of the line, I use the sound converter all the time, and this one is free.

Installed and registered fine on my Vista Home Premium 6-bit edition.
Makes fast work of editing an audio file. However when testing the record from stream options I wasn't able to achieve the same results as the tutorial. When attempting "Options - Properties", then choose Mixer device and "Recording - Stereo Mix" I do not get any response.
Other than that all of the other features seem to perform as expected. Thanks once again GAOTD Team.

#4 and #14..... You guys must work for AVS. Why dont you offer your software here once! Oh I know why... I have that same software... it basically SUCKS, like all the other AVS software I have. Way over priced, crashing, freezing, cant do anything crap.

#24... yes it is the point. If there are equal FREE alternatives out there, I for one want to know. I get tired paying money for crap. (see above)

Todays givaway is just a reboxed version of another givaway. If you already have it good. If you missed the previous givaway, get this.

We all know there are people out there that complain about everything. Like myself in my top comment about AVS crapware.

I have downloaded and used GAOTD offerings that received twice as many thumbs down as up, and I enjoyed the software. To me the rating system in here (thumbs) means nothng. I wishe the GAOTD team would set it up so you cannot rate it without submitting a comment first.

What is mportant are the reviews, and even most of those just take witha grain of salt and we know an honest, useful review when it is submitted. (thanks Ashraf and others) Me personally, I use Sound Editor Pro paid version. It has always done what I needed, and when I reformat my computer, I just reinstall it from by backup drive.

But still, free IS better, and there is free software out there that is better than "paid for" software that does the same thing. GAOTD offerings are not freeware. It's shareware or commercial software offered for free 1 day. Take advantage of it if you can use it. If you do not want it come back tomorrow and see whats there.

Registered okay using the downloadable demo from the developers site (see link at top of page) and the supplied registration code and giveaway name using Vista Home Basic.

I agree with a lot of what you say silver cowboy comment #24, but alternatives are always welcome because many who come here lose the programs given away after reinstalling windows or replacing their hard drives. The giveaway site has become not only a giver of free programs but a place to find good freeware alternaties, some of which are better than the commercial counterparts we have been given.

I for one will not be installing this software. The rebranding, and security issues are concerning, and, as many have said; there are many free alternatives that do the same thing, but better.

Also, what is it with the cost for some of these products? Setting aside the free for today part, why would a one trick pony like an mp3 editor cost $30? You can find software like this in the jewel case bins at Frys for $4.99

Silvercowboy, these will be considered FREEWARE when they can be registered for more than during the one day window allowed. The reason FREEWARE is popular and mentioned is that FREEWARE can be shared among friends and re-installed 3 months later when a HARDDRIVE fails.

It would be nice if GAOTD offered re-installing codes, but they don't.

I love what GAOTD does but calling all this GAOTD giveaway freeware is wrong.

Heads up on potential problem

Yes this is the same as Audio Editor Deluxe offered on April 18, 2009

If you install both programmes and then uninstall one of them you might just find that the one left on your system no longer works due to the NCT DLL’s and registry entries being removed by the others uninstallation.

It will depend on whether you just use the regular uninstall exe or an uninstall manager like Total Uninstall.

On my Win XP SP2 the regular uninstall had no adverse affect but when I used Total uninstall to remove one it affected the other as it removed the dll's and registry entries that are shared by the two (one?) programmes.

So choose one and stick with it!

As always thanks to the GAOTD team,
Regards,

Damian J Spooner

for basic mp3 editing I use and recommend free mp3DirectCut. Its basic advantage is, that it works with mp3 frames directly without converting to wave and back, so there is no quality loss. Rated very good (4.2/5) by 856 Softpedia users:

Downloaded, installed, and registered fine on Vista Home Premium, 32-bit OS. It has user-friendly, easy-to-understand menus and interface, although the deep blue color is somewhat distracting to the eye.

Output formats supported include the following:

G.721, G.723, G.726, ALAW, ULAW, GSM, DSP, ADPCM, PCM, OGG, MP2, MP3, VOX, RAW, WMA.

Good program overall and, for the above reasons, I rate today's giveaway program a 9 out of 10.
________________________________________________________________

Freeware (100% free for lifetime) alternative may be downloaded at:

http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/

Multiple, extensive output formats supported include:

WAV, MP3, MP4, WMA, OGG, AIF, AIFF, AU, FLAC, AAC, GSM, VOX, RAW, RSS Podcast, M3U, PLS, WPL, AMR, MPC, APE, SPX.

WavePad has a very nice, easy-to-understand user interface, and offers a multitude of feature-rich capabilities, more than today's download.

WavePad is my hands-down favorite for audio-editing and mixing functions. For the above reasons, based on my personal experience with this program, I give WavePad a thumbs-up perfect rating of 10.

The AVS4You spammers are back. Of course, the NCT DLL's, some of which don't register under Vista and many of which have security advisories, are by the same company, Online Media Technologies, which owns AVS and NCTsoft. Yes, Audio Editor Deluxe appears to be identical. Same misspellings, Help file errors, missing tooltips, etc. Requires a DEP exception if you have DEP enabled for everything.

#16 "What purpose this serves is not totally clear other than to generate more potential revenue for the developers"

Like, isn't that the whole POINT of capitalism? If enough think that this is the best alternative, it will survive and if not, it won't.

Freeware makes this a pretty high bar since just about anyone can and seemingly DOES produce top quality alternatives at no cost. Still, there probably are some cases where freeware isn't the best alternative.

Is that the case here? Guess that's the whole point of GAOTD. In this case, I'm pretty happy with Audacity, so I'm not going to find out.

There seems to be a propensity of copycat programs lately. Yet another one - MP3 Music Editor is a virtual clone of Audio Editor Deluxe that was offered by Giveawayoftheday on April 18, 2009. What purpose this serves is not totally clear other than to generate more potential revenue for the developers. It would seem that some of these vendors have little to do with programming or developing software, but rather just simply play the marketing role. Then again, why reinvent the wheel when it has already been invented a dozen times. As one visitor expressed it, "the interface looks exactly like that of Audio Editor - is this rebranded software? So the art of originality takes a hit again.
