It's hard to choose 3 out of the 300+ programs that have been given away.

    My personal choices are
    1) Zoner Photo Studio 9
    2) Wirechanger
    3) Concept Draw Mindmap or Magic Score

I have Photoshops 8 which is almost certainly much better than Photostudio 9; but for some jobs such as resizing images and doing basic editing for posting images on forums etc, I'm using photostudios 9 more and more because it's so simple to use. I like the GUI and the speed at which I can resize lots of images without having to go through the more complex procedures in photoshops. (I do love photoshops though)

Wirechanger has 'changed the way I look at my computer on a daily basis. I actually lost the program several weeks ago because I had to format my main HDD with the OS on it. Withn days I paid for the full version because I was missing it so much. Oddly, I made a mistake and ordered wirekeys instead. It was only when I tried to get the wirechanger demo to register that I realized my mistake....guess what...I Emailed the company and received a reply from the developer within the day, with a reg key for wirechanger and he also said keep the wirekeys reg too. That was a suprise.
Anyway, there are so many dd ons and plugins for wirechanger that I'm never bored with my desktop anymore. I have quotations and a news feed as well as a kaleidoscope wallpaper generator, which has transformed some of the Hubble space images that I downloaded from the site where you can exchange wallpapers. You can have norelets, and reminders and a useful calender reminder. There's lots more, but I'm sure those that got this giveaway a few months ago that do like having new wallpapers frequently know the capabilities of this sweet program.

My final choice would be Concept Draws mind map program, which I used a lot before my accident 2 years ago, however because I'm not using it at the moment I exchange it for Magic Score which iis an excellent music program, thhat has inspired my 8 year old to continue his music lessons. He's learning to play the saxaphone. The progrm is ideal for helping him with his musical notation.

There are lots more programs I'd like to include, such as flash past smart type assistent. audio and video converters as well as others such as Aston and frigate.

  2. One of the best ever (or at least since I started watching GOTD around January): Gaviri PocketSearch (7 August 2007).

To the GOTD team: As you no doubt are already aware, the Gaviri PocketSearch giveaway is a real winner, and one of the very best giveaways to date. And the Gaviri team's support was wonderful, though unfortunately an exceptional case rather than the rule. Thank you very much again for this great Web site.

To the Gaviri team (Emeka and Yuriy that I know of): Thank you very much for diligently monitoring the comments and providing fast and helpful answers to questions, additional information, and corrections of mistaken impressions of your software. It is very rare for publishers to provide such great support to the GOTD community. I am sure that your company and your product have scored extra points with users because of your attentive support.

  5. My 3 favorites are:

Zoner Draw 4 - ZD 5 would be an nice giveaway since I missed their $5.00 summer sale : -(

Gaviri Pocketsearch - changed my life....no, really, it did!

Desktop Icon Toy - I know this one will probably get me pelted with rotten produce (although fresh, tasty, and small enough to not knock me over would be appreciated....possibly), but I depend on this little dude. At times it does misbehave (causing me to freak!), but it locks my icons down and Restore Layout is like a best friend you didn't even know you had, until you need it! And the upgraded version would be appreciated....

    Cheers,

Would like a repeat of the IntraPDF programs, especially PDF to HTML, since I missed them and they could be my new favorites.

    1. Evernote

    3. Glary Utilities

I'd hope that when you look at the list, along with the top from 2007, you'll offer reruns of those favorites, if the vendors will go along again. Direct Access has upgraded since last May's offering.

I'm not sure this is allowed in the 'rules', but for positive favorites I'll nominate:

Frigate 3, for becoming more useful as I learn it.
AnVir Task Manager, for being polite as well as useful.
Magnifying Glass, for a really nice way to help me see the fine print.

About a hundred others deserve mention- not for the giveaway, but for alternatives posted in comments- and pointing out things I didn't know were possible so I could search out free alternatives. DeskMate I can't put on the list as I haven't tested enough.

Then negative 'favorites' for showing me what *not* to try again:

Aston Shell for defaulting to destroy a user's original desktop rather than save JIC.
RTFM and then *read* the little option boxes!
Eaz Fix for being an example of not remembering the saying 'if it sounds too good to be true, look for the hidden hook, then *pass it up.*'
Starburn Shark for being really good until rebooted. <sigh> and it burned so *well!*

off topic, but I found that starburn isn't *hopeless*, just mighty frustrating still a negative overall.

    #1: StickyPassword
My computer never runs without it and I never go anywhere without it. It reduced my time online by upwards of 10%, in that I don't have to sit and try to remember the password for a particular site. Also, when signing up for accounts, I don't have to spend time noting it. The password manager takes care of that.

Since it's been six months since I last posted here I think I'll post again as things do change and there has been some excellent giveaways that I now find I can't do without. Just to remind you I chose the following previously:

    1) Zoner Photo Studio 9
    2) Wire changer
    3) Concept Draw Mindmap or Magic Score

Though Mind map was only a demo version because I missed the giveaway. Someone has just posted a link to a freeware mindmap program in the forums; in response to me saying I'd missed it. I still use Zoner Photo Studio 9, and Magic Score, I've not reinstalled Wire changer for some time despite having bought the program following the giveaway versions loss after a format.

Of the giveaways that have been given since the summer of 07 the recently given away EAZ-FIX has to have been amongst the best find so far despite it getting a very poor response from the community, which I suspect was partly to do with the usual vocal contributors to the site. I nearly didn't download it myself following the few comments I'd seen when I log on (usually an hour or two after the changeover), but decided I’d try it out on one of my computers and see if there was any adverse effects. (I now use one of my older computers for this ‘test phase’. Before I went to bed I rechecked the comments and was really shocked at the negativity that had been thrown at this application, but as I’d not had any problems with it, the fact that I’d never been entirely successful with the windows restore point system, and that it had such a simple GUI I decided to throw caution to the wind and install the program onto all of my computers. Well I’m glad I did as several days later I had a major crash on one of my computers. Initially I was at my wit’s end because I couldn’t access anything apart from the bios. I kept forgetting to press the home key, but eventually did and hey, my computer was restored to the last snapshot. I lost the last day’s giveaway and game because I’d not taken a snapshot after downloading the day’s giveaways, but that was a small loss. I find it so much simpler to use this program than the system restore, and it’s ever present when the computers are booting up. I’ve had no problems with any of my computers since the application has been installed. Definitely the best giveaway to date in my opinion. I will be buying this when the next update is available.

My second choice has to be Starburn. It has replaced Blind Write as my favorite DVD ripper, though it’s not just for that. I’ve completely scrapped my paid for version of Nero (v7) and am now using Starburn exclusively for authoring and burning DVD”s and CD,s It’s so much more simpler than Nero, and I’m sure it’s quicker as well, but that could just be my imagination, lol. I sometimes got cyclic redundancy problems with Nero when saving images to disc, which was a more of a problem with earlier versions of Nero (e.g. 6.5) Unfortunately I won’t be buying this one as it’s far to overpriced for me. (The value of the product has in no way influenced my decision here as to be honest, I don’t think it’s worth the amount of money they are asking – perhaps a $100, but not $495) Those two giveaways are in total contrast to Goodgotd’s selection as he’s put them down as some of the worst, lol.

My third giveaway has to be Easeus Partition Manager. I know Windows has its own manager of sorts, but I find Easeus much easier to use. I have 14 hard Drives not counting the external drives, so there’s a lot to manage. All of those discs apart from three which are all relatively small and are my oldest disks (1x40Gb, 1x60Gb and a 1x80Gb) range between 320Gb to 750Gb, so I needed a good manager, and Partition manager filled the spot, though there’s a decent one in the freeware library that could be used if you missed this particular giveaway.

A close fourth would be Evernote which seems to have been the most popular one that several others have chosen. It would probably be in my top three if I was still working, though now it’s only used for note taking for my reviews elsewhere (I don’t use it for writing my game reviews for the game giveaway project as they are all written on the spot, unless I’m writing a special for the forums)

I still have to put eaz fix in the negative column- for dual-boot systems it could be a nightmare.

I'm putting infinite jigsaw up since the wife is ga-ga over it..

I must agree with WhiteRabbit, I think EAZ-FIX is a really wonderful little program. I also love cleanse-uninstaller unfortunatly I was cleaning my computer and by accident deleted the program. I would really appreciate it if Give-Away-Of the day would make Cleanse-uninstaller available again. Also I came across a program called Reg Sweep, it must have been a previous give-away and I missed it, becuase I live in South Africa and with the Elctricity cuts etc.. I was not able to get onto the internet. So I would really appreciate it if re-instate the give-away again.
