I'm in. Thank you for opening this up for us all. I play a little UT3 and a lot of Unreal Tournament 2003 (Sadly no Steam support for that one). I also have Dark Messiah, way to awesome for a short description. FarCry, and the Orange box stuff. Hope to see some of you online. Thanks again.

You're welcome Mr./Ms./Mrs. M3NT4L =) Welcome to the group. I too have both far cry's, dark messiah, UT3, UT2003, and the orange box. So maybe you and I shall see each other online sometimes.

Hey thanks. It is mr. But please either Jdg or just plain ole Scott will do. My tag is the same as this username ingame. Look for me.

Now what we need is a UT2003 server. (Joke BTW, don't take it seriously. Unless you want to.) I could play that on my laptop.
I use chronopie as my alias almost everywhere.
Posted 15 years ago # -
Hey I have all those games as well, so that's a threesome so far, lol. (Chronopie if you don't have UT2003 I have two copies). I picked up a copy for 50 pence (70 cents) several weeks ago. I was keen to double up on several games (Battlefield 2, Unreal Tournament, Full Spectrum Warrior etc so that I could play online with my son. He's so into UT3 he no longer plays UT2003 or 2004, so you can have a copy of UT2003 if you want it. Apart from the maps I think 2003 and 2004 are very similar (I can't remember if 2003 has bomb run as it's been ages since I played it).
Has anyone downloaded the extra content for Farcry 2 yet? That's another game I've only scratched the surface with. I was so into playing Mercenaries 2 when I got Farcry 2 that I've hardly played it; the opening scenes in Farcry 2 were awesome.

you mis-interpreted what I said above wrabbit - I do have UT 2003, and yes it does have BR.
The joke was that we need a server setup.
game on?
Posted 15 years ago # -
Alright, I've done something INCREDIBLY STUPID: D/Led windows 7 RC (2.3 gb)(might put on my desktop - still sourcing parts), on a 5gb data cap, near the end of the (subscription) month, so my data rate is ~1/2 what it should be (for exceeding cap), may not be able to participate this weekend.
A UT 2003 server - I lol at the idea.

That's bad news, Both yourself and Wizzard not playing this weekend. Though there have been quite a few new members joining recently. :) I thought I'd sort out the Steam announcement before I go to bed. If it's not ther ein the next hour it means I've got lost, lol. I'm really keen to check out Killing Floor which I pre-ordered and has now unlocked on Steam, but will see about making the announcement on Steam about this weekends game. I hope me leaving the announcement so late hasn't compromised the number of people who are going to join in. :(

I'm always misreading what people say these days Chronopie - my brain really is fried with all the opiates I have to take.

Okay, the server has been set to run from this coming Saturday 16th May 8pm GMT. I've set it to random maps with a change every 40 minutes. there's a frag limit set to 50 and I'll keep the server open until the following morning; or maybe until late Sunday evening. Your right it was really easy to set up.
The event is called:
Giveaway Social Club - Half Life 2 Deathmatch
The server is called:
Giveaway Social Club - Half-Life 2 Deathmatch
the server address:
86.12.45.187
and the password:
Cholon
I hope we see lots of community members there.
Please do comment to let me know how many are likely to be joining the server. I won't be able to join until after 9.30pm, but should then be in until my hands get too painful. I played two sessions last weekend from 10pm to 11.30 and then again around 4am for another hour. To anyone that hasn't played yet, or more importantly never payed online. It really is great fun. I personally avoided going online after a few bad experiences playing on public servers. This server will be password protected to keep out those that cheat or mess around.
I hope to see you all on Saturday or possibly Sunday if I keep the server open. I'm likely to be playing between 5 to 7pm and 10 to 12pm on Sunday. (all GMT) :)
I'll post this over in the appropriate thread. I only realized I'd posted it in the wrong thread after I'd posted it, lol

Whoa... Hold on a second. Reading the server line, it says 127.0.0.1:27015. I don't think anyone can connect to the server, unless they have their own server running with the same settings. For those who don't know, 127.0.0.1 (aka localhost) is your own computer.
You'll need to give us your external ip (search for what's my ip), Whiterabbit, or else we can't connect.Posted 15 years ago # -
Hi GMMan,
being a bit of a noob at setting servers up due to avoiding playing online, I'm not sure how to find a server i.p. other than my own computer. I've never had problems in the past setting a server up to play games such as Battlefield Vietnam with friends in the US.
However I followed your suggestion above and the site (I.P. Lookup) gave me a different address to the local one, so I've inserted that into the correct field. sorry for the mistake. I'll soon get used to doing it correctly, lol.
I've also set up another server to run Left 4 Dead from 9.30pm GMT to 2am Monday 18th (4.30pm to 9.30pm Eastern time and 2.30pm to 7.30pm Mountain time) Please let me know if you'll be able to jump in. :)
Regards

Half-life 2 deathmatch is finally up and running. Sorry it started 45minutes late. I fell asleep on the sofa.
Posted 15 years ago # -
hmmm rabbit the site shows that it's not gonna be open for another 6 hours and your server didn't respond.
Posted 15 years ago # -
Hi Wizzard, talk about learning from your mistakes. I was still in a half sleep when I initially started the server - guess what, I didn't name the server, I just turned on the game and after sitting around for nearly 2 hours waiting for someone to join thought there's got to be something wrong. So dropped out and then restarted; however I realized when i'd first started the server I'd not bothered to set the name or the password. Bearing in mind I'd been asleep for the better part of the day (after not going to bed last night).
All I can say to the community is sorry for this hiccup. The server has now been reset with the name Giveawayofthe day - Half-life 2 deathmatch, with the server password Cholon. I'll leave it running for the night, but won't leave it on all tomorrow, as otherwise it'll lock me out of all my other Steam games. I'm really keen to play Tunnel Rats and Killing Floor, both of which I've bought over the last few days but haven't had the oppertunity to play yet. Tomorrows Left for Dead will still run from 10pm GMT. I think I've got it sussed now, lol, so hopefully the next time it won't be such a disaster.
Edit:
I stayed in game wandering around on my own until 1.30am; but finally decided to give up as it looks like my mistake earlier in the evening put paid to the game for tonight. Still, i'm leaving it on all night just in case anyone joins.
Just to be certain I've done the right thing. When I first boot up the game via steam I choose create server (or something like that). A small window appears where I can name the server and configure it to play specific maps or play them randomly plus set the frag rate, the time for each map and a password. Is this the correct way to do it? Or does it have to be set from the variables I set when I announced the game on Steam? Is there a link from the announcement that I can click to take me to the game.
Question:
If I leave the map rotation set to 40 minutes does it mean I need to click on the start button everytime a map changes? I noticed whenever a new map started I had to re-enter the game.
Posted 15 years ago # -
Hi Whabbit,
We're never too old to learn, are we? ;-)The start time on the announcement was set for several hours later so Steam didn't activate a connection yet. If I had found a way to get into the game then I'd have edited the announcement, but everything seemed to be a dead end. It looks like I gave up trying just before you got it sorted.
There were at least three group members looking to get into the game initially. I hope they'll try again next time!Enjoy your Left 4 Dead game later!
Regards,

Hint: Every Steam group has a Chat Room. This gives me an idea. It could possibly turn into a GAOTD minor support system for anyone with GAOTD troubles and have Steam. However, this approach is a bit inconvenient because not everyone has taken the plunge with Steam...
I might try to set up a server next weekend, if I can manage to install Linux on to my Xbox.
Posted 15 years ago # -
So who is holding the server?
What's the password going to be?
I can play this one, provided it's not running at 2 am local.
Posted 15 years ago # -
I can run a server again this weekend and I will try to set it up to run all day even chronopie. So then maybe you'll get a chance to play =)
Posted 15 years ago # -
Still curious as to the password, and starting time.
Seen the 5 spam threads on the front page?

Te next scheduled games are
8th August - Left for Dead
15th August - Half Life 2 - Deathmatch
22nd August - Unreal tournamentIf you want to play a particular game at any other time please post details here and I'll see what I can do about setting up a server. There's a multitude of games we could play. I've only been setting up those games that I know several of the giveawayoftheday group already have. I'd like to play Killing Floor, Call of Duty: World at War, and maybe a racing game. I have most of the latest racing games such as Grid, Fuel, the last three Need for speed games, Colin McRae Dirt, Burnout Paradise Ultimate box and flatout ultimate Carnage, oh yeah also Death Track and Smashing Toys.
I'll give ttimes nearer the date of each game, though generally i start the servers around 10.30 to midnight GMT. I realize that this may be too early for those in the US and too late for those in Australia and SE Asia. I'm open to suggestions as to abetter time to start. I'm quite happy to play later (anytime up to around 5am GMT)
regards

p.s. welcom to all newcomers. :)

my main (only) problem with thw times of 10:30 am - 12 am GMT is: 10:30pm - 12 pm local i.e after I shut-down for the night, and before I'm free to game the next day. >.>
although if you run it on a Saturday, I might be able to jump in around ~7:30 pm (GMT), atleast for half-life 2 DM. Run right 'til 5am, and I can be on from ~2am.
we need a crossbow match.
Posted 14 years ago # -
Hi Chronopie. Unfortunately 7.30 to around 9.30pm is one of the only times I can't play because we spend that time helping the children with homework, or having family 'interaction'. When I've arranged games to start at 9pm my life hasn't been worth living as my wife .... well, need I say more, lol. I may be able to set a server up for those who prefer playing at the earlier time. there are times when I could sneak in for a short period, lol. But i'd never be fully commited until around 10pm GMT.
The later time seems okay. I'm often up until 4 -5am, so 2am wouldn't be too hard to manage. :)

The Warhammer 40k DOW games (Dark Crusade in particular) Does that have to be steam version?
Because I have retail AND I cannot activate a steam copy with the key (I have tried).
p.s You've included Half-Life 2 (ep.1/ep.2) in the list above, they have no online multiplayer, just a friendly heads up. They were originally packaged with Counter-strike: Source (HL2), and later Team Fortress 2. HL2 DM uses the same engine etc. but was released later.
Posted 14 years ago # -
Thanks Chronopie, oddly Half Life 2 was one of the only games I didn't check to see if there was a multiplayer function. I just assumed it was, lol
Most of the games above are not Steam versions. I don't think it really matters apart from the ease at which you can join Steam games through the instant messaging service.

Might re-install DOW:DC on my laptop and get back to you on it, Necrons FTW
Posted 14 years ago # -
I know that HL2/Ep.1 have no multiplayer, because I've finished both in the last couple of days (Ep.1 1/2Hr ago)
Posted 14 years ago # -
I noticed you'd been playing HL2 via Steams friends service.
I'd better get practicing my DOW skills, lol. - Apart from playing demo's previously I've never go into the Warhammer series of games. I couldn't pass up on this last weekends deals though. I initially was going to buy ll the earlier ones because their combined price was less than the latest versions deal, but Wizzard said he was buying DOW II. I thought it would be a good game to play online so went for that one instead, then in a fit of abandon decided to buy the others as well, lol....I've so far only been playing soulstream. I'm about half way through the tutorial. Unless I'm really into a game I find it hard to concentrate for more than maybe half an hour at a time before I need to change to somthing else. It's been like that since having to take opiates. Game slike Fallout 3, Oblivion, Battlefield 2 and Crysis I find I can play for hours without a break, but everything else I find hard to concentate on.
Did you buy the latest Dawn of War? If so that'll make three of the Steam group able to play.... :)
