Thanks for the reminder. I have it on my Steam games list, but haven't actually installed it. What time is the game starting? (don't forget to include which time zone, lol)

If you check the group's page, it will display the date and time in your local timezone. =)
Thanks for the info Wizzard.
8:00 pm tonight (GMT +0 - Saturday)
8:00 am for me tomorrow (GMT +12 -> Sunday), up early I guess.
UPDATE: I've synced UT3 to steam, although it's not loaded at present. Should organise a round (or 3) sometime.
definitely - (I'll let my son play for me as he's good, lol - only kidding) - he knows all the maps inside out (wheras I rarely play the game, but do think it's brilliant. (He's more familiar with the Black edition whereas I've not played it since before they updated the game)
Guys I'll be a little late joining you this evening as we have homework sessions between 7pm and 9pm before the kids go to bed. I'll join you just as soon as the kids are in bed. Probably around 9.30 GMT, thats 90 minutes after you start. Though I'll try and make it a little erlier. Depends upon how the kids cope with their homework.
If I ignore the homework session I'll only antagonise my wife, which isn't worth it, lol. Plus I enjoy spending time with the kids helping them with homework. ;)
Regards
Stephen
p.s.
See you on the battlefield later this evening. I finally installed deathmatch last night and checked out the first map. Pretty basic, but it looked well made. I like the crossbow. :)
p.p.s.
Wizzard, I noticed you've just purchased HawX. What do you think of it? Personally I was disappointed with it. I pre-ordered it last year around February (over a year before it was released), expecting it to be brilliant, but I found it rather tame and easy to play. I enjoy flying jets in Battlefield 2 more that I do with HawX. Maybe later in the game it gets more interesting, but I soon lost interest and shelved the game. We should have a coop game sometime; it may be fun. The same goes for the other Tom Clancy game - End Game. World in Conflict which was released nearly two years before knocks spots off End Game imho. If you were thinking of buying it, and don't have World in Conflict yet, I'd go for the earlier title, especially now as it has the expansion added.
woohoo so far so fun except i think the next one i make will have a password protection for just players of the group. A big thank you to chronopie for joining me in a fragfest. The server will be up all night guys so if you want to play, just hop right in.
Just noticed your pps rabbit. I'm enjoying HawX, but I generally hate flight sims so I think it's the simplicity that I enjoy. I even got my fiance into it last night she played for quite some time. Who knows, maybe she'll be playing as wizzard_of_ozz2004 one of these days when we play.
Hey Wizz,
You chickening... eh checking out of the game already?
I had a bit of trouble getting in and got disconnected a few times, but I enjoyed getting killed by you, THANKS!
lol you're welcome g@rgoyle =) Yeah I gotta finish building our new entertainment center. Then I got transfer all our electronics from the old one to the new. Fun stuff, you wanna help?
Allways enjoy tech stuff, but my arms aren't long enough to help you out over there ;-P
rabbit and I are havin a blast killing everyone in hl2, you all really should join!
Yep, I really enjoyed myself. I gave up at around midnight GMT simply because my right hand was killing, lol. As I mentioned while in game; apart from playing Left 4 Dead in coop the other day (I much prefer coop or team death match to death match actually)I've not played online for four years. I used to play Men of Valor, Americas Army, Battlefield Vietnam and then I started playing Battlefield 2 which was the game that stopped me playing for so long. I won't go into details except to say I must have been selecting servers that had too many hackers.
I definitely want to play online again. It's much better when you're acquainted with the people you're playing with. I used to run a box server with a good friend. We ran a private Americas Army game (though it wasn't official so we couldn't gain points) with up to 10 players, plus the other games (apart from BF2 as well as the odd game of Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault. It's been too long in the cold. I loved playing America's Army as it was much more tactical and involved virtually evry style of playing depending upon which map you were playing. Which m,eant that you could guarantee at least one good match each time you played. I'm rubbish at run and gun much preferring to play stealthily. :) (sniper alert)
As for playing Left 4 Dead, thats a certainty as far as I'm concerned. All we need is four players, or less as I think you get bots playing with you if you don't fill the slots - so long as I don't play the girl, lol.
And even though I find HawX tame, it would be great to have a coop game with you as I've never played a flight sim online before and would love to do so. :)
I'm sure there are other games to play.
Has anyone got Empire Total War? We must have more games.
What's the spec of your computer Wizzard. I could always set up a server myself occasionally. My main computer at the moment (finally planning on building a new one very soon as it's over 2 years old now) is a 3.2Gb Dual core with 4Gb RAM and an NVidia 8800 GTS 640Mb card. That should be okay for running as a server. And I could play on one of my other computers so that the server ran well. I've downloaded some of the Steam servers already, but I'm not sure whether you set up a server for HawX independantly. I didn't buy HawX via Steam, I had it on preorder from Feb 08 and have a hard copy.
Anyway, thanks for getting me back into playing online. All I need now is some practice. lol
regards
WR
Glad I got some interested members. My pc is about comparable to yours but I have 6gb of ram and same card and I think my processor is about the same speed and dual core. It should be fine. Did you experience any lag or anything playing today? I would definitely play HawX and Left 4 Dead with you. I'm the same way with online games. I never really played them but figured since I've gotten to know you guys so well, I wouldn't mind it. I know I had a great time and am looking forward to it again.
Hmm... Maybe I should start a CS1.6 server some time. It'll let me see if my newly acquired v1.0 Xbox is capable of running a CS1.6 server, and if that map that I helped my friend make (50/50, if you ask me)is any good.
I'm only playing hl2 dm on a laptop w/ dual core 1.61 ghz, 1 1/2 gb ram, 128 mb onboard graphics (shared).
And the graphics had a purple tinted ~2:00 pm (GMT +12) onwards. Small lag about the same time.
Nice game Wrabbit. (spawn kill)
If I had Hawx or L4d I'd take you up.
I'm better with UT 2004 than UT 3, but it's not steam version. When I get my desktop up and running, (dual core 3.0 ghz, 1 1/4 gb ram, 256mb graphics), UT3 is a must.
lol. Yeah I nearly missed you actually. I was about to close the computer down and decided to check to see if anyone was still playing. I thought I saw Wizzards name as well, but he must have left as I logged on.
Pity you missed the deal last weekend. The coop play is great fun. Do you have UT3? Though I also have UT2004 so we could try that sometime. :) Just say the word. Anyway, I'm glad I got another game before I went to bed. It was a fun pvp match.
I ended up buying the Black version so that I could play online with my son. I originally bought a hard copy when it first came out. You can play with only one copy installed twice on a LAN, but Cal wanted me to play full blown online , but we haven't had the chance yet and I've been reticent to go back online after some bad experiences with hackers and idiots. I think today's match has given me back some of the confidence I've lacked for so long. I was expecting to get pawned; which I was initially, lol.
Who blocked up the stairwell to the top floor of the empty industrial complex?
I look forwards to your build being finished.
It looks like we have at least four community members that may be regulars so far
I have UT 2003 + UT 2004 (retail / Not steam) *Both which run on my laptop*, and UT3 (retail, linked w/steam)*Which doesn't*
Wrabbit there are about 7 maps and we started on one map, transferred to a different map about 3 hours in. Wizzard's comp. was the server. (although he did play)
It's only a rebuild, maybe slight ram upgrade, not a new, more powerful machine. sadly :(
Wizz, if I get the issue with that style of game play again(blocking off part of the map), I'll take you up on that offer. If there's a password in future, that would also solve the problem.
Who was 'great granny' btw, they're part of the GOTD group.
Great Granny was G@rgoyle :)
Yeah, sorry 'bout not making that clear. It was my first multiplayer online game and it took me a while to figure out how to activate the in-game chat *slapping noob-sticker on forehead*
Up already Wrabbit? I thought I'd worn you out. *Must kill Harder*
'Y' for chat to all.
'U' for chat to team.
piece of cake *The cake is a lie* - *One free frag* for whoever quotes the source in HL2 DM next time.
The man never sleeps ;-)
Yeah, I spotted the "u" and "y" in the keyboard options in the game menu... but only after I searched the entire Steam client and website LOL.
I just found out that my connection problems were caused by a conflict between the Steam client and my browser. I quess that also explains why I could only connect via the in-game server list. Everything else returns a "no response" error, but I think I can get that sorted before the next match, so uhm... *whispering* bring it on?
You guys running over me when I was down sure made me feel glad that we weren't playing a medieval match *shuddering at the thought of roman skirts*
I had a blast! Thanks for making this a great first venture into the big bad online gaming world!
Regards,
Lan -aka- GreatGranny
Playing with a regular group with the occasioonal new blood is fun. Especially when you get to know that each person is there for a bit of fun without cheating. That's what put me off playing four years ago. guys with aim bots and programs that showed them where you were on the map, so no matter how hard you tried you were always hit. Oh yeah and those that spawn raped. To G@argoyle - That's sitting on the spawn and shooting whoever comes through before they get their bearings so that you get good game stats. It was especially prevalent in early battlefield games as the more points you scored the better your weapon unlocks and promotions, which gave you even more advantages. Thankfully HL2 has a random spawn as most do these days.
yeah i think i kinda raped you once or twice rabbit but it was purely luck lol. I'm wondering if the server took a hit because I was nowhere to be found. It should have held up fine without me. I'm afraid I might not be able to play this coming weekend, but if stephen would like to set up a match or something, or I could set the server up again, that'd be great. I'm up for all, any game you have and want to play is fine with me. Let's start a new thread for the next game. By the way rabbit and g@rgoyle are now moderators if anyone else is interested.
Good to know someone is. Could make this a regular thing... *lol*
Map: DM - Runoff next. *Is it a gas attack, or a nuclear strike...*
p.s add a password, publish in these forums.
I'll have to see about setting up next weekends game. Not tonight though as I'm just about to have a rare early night. :) I've not set up a server via steam before. I presume it's easy enough to do; much like setting a server up directly from a game???
I'll post details tomorrow, but provisionally it should start about the same time next weekend Sat 16th. It'll be my last oppertunity until June 6th (day before my birthday btw, so I anticipate playing right into the early hours of my birthday), because I'm off to Florida for a decent vacation.
I can set the server up, but won't be playing until between 9.30 to 10pm GMT. The server should be set up for 8PM and I'll keep it running for as long as there's interest or all night if necessary.
let me know if you prefer playing later in the day. Of course I'll need to take account of your time zone.
Regards
Rabbit
p.s.
To Wizzard, no I didn't get any lag, just a problem with the junk that was stashed in the stair well. Apart from one attempt, I always ended up having to commit suicide with a grenade if I got stuck. Setting a password, which I'll post nearer the time should stop non giveaway team members from spoiling the fun, though I must admit, there were a couple of players that I suspect wern't GODT, but played fairly.
The most players I remember seeing at any one time was 5, but it was still great fun. I think any more on such a small map may have been too manic, lol.
Good nioght
Regards
WR
yes, rabbit, the server is very easy to set up. Under the tools option on steam you'll see steam source or something like that and then you just set your specifics. Real easy. i checked and set a password of giveaway. When you try to play it would ask you for a password. I'm not sure if it will post details on our site page or not though. I will research it later tonight when I get home, i'm celebrating mother's day with my family right now.
Specifically, the tool is called Source Dedicated Server. You can choose what game you want to start a server for, and then it will download required files for that game. Note that it creates an entire GCF (though not filled with client dll and other required file for playing) instead of just the files it needs.
Thanks for the info guys. I'll definitely set up a server for Saturday. Am I able to set a map rotation so that we get to see a good variety of maps?
As mentioned above I'll set the time for the same as last Saturday, but won't be there until 9.30 to 10pm, (unless the kids get to bed on time) :)
The member numbers have grown which looks really promising. I think expanding the games will entice more to the group. I may try setting up two servers as I've got three decent computers running at the moment and enough bandwidth to cope (10Mb), but we shall see. If i'm up to it I'll check out whether it's feasable an I'll announce which other game I'll run.
What I'd like to see is community members ideas on what games they would like to play. Obviously we're not all going to have the same games, but I'm sure a sizeable proportion of the community will have a couple of games in common.
Considering the nVidia / ATi offers (posted frequently), almost everyone should have HL2 DM. http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/5232#post-56009
Perhaps you could set them up 48 hours, i.e. 00:00 Saturday - 00:00 Monday, should allow everyone, in every timezone, a fair proportion of game time. (Just an Idea)
*Still need to source some pieces for my desktop, so, for me, UT3 is out. Don't let that stop the rest of you.*
