I've also not received an account.

This was well publicized, so I guess they got inundated.

I hope we all hear from them soon, it looks like an interesting product but useless without the account.

Answer to Aznacha (Quote)'FYI to all who could not get the program registered. The readme file gives you the how to register information. It was pretty easy.'

We are talking about the beta version that is the subject of the giveaway, not Version 2.2.1.386 which registers perfectly. No matter how many times we apply for a beta registration there is no reply with the beta login details so we cannot use the giveaway which is the beta version!! There was no readme supplied with the beta, it gives instructions after installation which tells you to 'Click to create a new Evernote account' after completing the online registration form there is no response back from the server!! no matter how many times you register or how many different e-mail accounts you register with!

From what people are saying, it appears there is a difference between how v2.2.0.384 and v2.2.1.386 show that they are registered. (The lower number is the one previously given away here.) The older version says "Evernote" when regisered, and the newer version says "Evernote (Registered)".

They probably noticed how much confusion there was when the screen did not use the word "registered" so the decided to put the word in there. (My old v2.2.0.384 shows as "Evernote", just like the faq says.)

Follow the link to create an account, it has been 3 days now and no email. Checked the spam, even the trash folder but no sight! I would give a thumb down even it's useful, nice interface or whatever but if you can't log in then those things don't matter.

Any help?

In 2 days I have now used Evernote dozens of times and find it amazingly useful! It'll be unfortunate if the beta kicks out eventually (and I hope it doesn't), but either way, I'm not going to be without this software - it's just that good! Clips, photos, cc'ing emails, whatever... it organizes my life! I don't know how I lived without this for so long!

The about screen shows "Evernote (Registered), Version 2.2.1.386. I don't know if that means anything. I did follow the link after installation to register at the website. The v3 seems to be, at least for me, a website link that I bookmarked. I didn't get (or create?)a particular shortcut. Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the software yet, but I don't seem to have any issues with "trial" or anything. I"m just thrilled that it hasn't messed anything up as in some previous posts!

#186, eelydnic..

They must have updated the software and not changed the FAQ then, or else you are talking about v3... because the screenshots show that a registered v2.2 doesn't say "registered". It takes off the word "trial" under "About Evernote". According to the FAQ, it will show as "Evernote (Trial)", "Evernote (Free)", and "Evernote".

I didn't download the files from today, so I can't check into it further. I still have the version given away before. With all the problems people were having and me being on dialup, I didn't want to take the chance of losing what I have.

to busuzo, re: #163.
Try opening program by going to c:\Program Files\Evernote\Evernote3 and then clicking (or double-clicking) on evernote.exe. If this doesn’t work either there is a problem with Evernote in Win 2000 or a conflict with something in your system, or try a re-install. If it does work, 1) delete the existing bad evernote icon (shortcut), 2) copy evernote.exe to the clipboard, and 3) paste a new icon (shortcut) in the same place as the old one was by right-clicking and choosing “paste shortcut.” You can then rename the shortcut, if you wish.

Good luck.

Evernote is a brilliant product. However, v3b is actually far more like an "alpha" product than a beta. The web-syncing is very cool, but this version has such a limited feature set compared tov2.2 that I don't think the company is doing itself any favours by releasing or giving away this version just yet.

That's not to say that you shouldn't download this time - it's an excellent piece of software nonetheless!

I don't want "synchronization" nor do I want my knowledge, my life, or my data tied to a central server anywhere. I want it staying put.

You can bet I'm not alone.

And if I need to save snippets of info, there are lots of apps that can do that, and no shortage of desktop indexing software.

Something really creeps me out about this company wanting to be the master of the universe. I sure don't want my brain interconnected to it.

We can't all be sheep.

Unbelieveable. Time right now is 10:57pm pst. I followed the instructions, clicked the link in the readme.txt file which took met to the Evernote website, requested my invitation per that page, began the installation and it instantly crashed my computer. It was so dead I had to install it in Safe Mode. Once installed and everything about the pc seemed fine, I rebooted in normal mode and ran Evernote. It wants me to enter my username and password, which I don't have because it hasn't arrived in my email inbox. I'm afraid that if it doesn't arrive by midnite PDT, them I'll be out of luck, which is why I decided to write this note to leave it as proof that I did try to register it properly.

I've been wanting to try Evernote since I got my pocket pc years ago but just never got around to it. Finally, a chance comes my way and I fear I've missed it.

Anyone know if I'll be able to request the beta from the Evernote website and still get the upgrade discount once the final version becomes available?

To those who had the same problem I did with inability to install the regular (non beta) 2.2 186install, I noticed that when I went back to wiki downloader in desperation to give a fresh d/l a shot (yes, desperate!), the previous download had been quietly replaced with a 'fix' .

I'd like to have known this was occurring as I'd have been save one mighty big headache and a chunk of time. I like persisting and learning and finding ways around things, but if they are never going to work without a fix from the outside then it's pretty futile. Sometimes the early bird gets the wormy apple, not the worm. I hope others have found this out before they got too frazzled.

I'm very grateful for the generosity and help I find here, and mention the mysterious by way of hopefully returning it to someone who was also tearing their hair out.

While everyone else is gushing all over themselves about how great this is, etc., it's been a pain in the butt for me. I've never had a problem installing and using any GAOTD programs, until now. The program seemed to install just fine, however when I opened the program and entered my username and password (I had already set up a free account), the program would NOT log in to my web account, and it sucked up almost all my system resources trying to. I tried it 3 times, and each time I had to shut down my computer to get Evernote to stop "looking" for the web site to log in (windows task manager would not kill the program). I have a fairly fast processor, win xp2, and 2 gigs of ram - so i don't think it's my 'puter. Would love to try it, but looks like it's not going to work for me. Uninstalled.

Re my first comment (#158)

I finally uninstalled EverNote (Trial) and THEN installed EverNote 2.2.1.386 with no problem.

My reference to the number "1." doesn't make sense, now that I've seen my moderated version of my post. Until then, though, "1." was displayed at the beginning of the first line of my message. I'm glad to see it's gone. Very distracting.

I LOVE EverNote. One thing (of the many) I forgot to mention is that your notes are saved automatically as you type. Nothing gets lost!

Any suggestions...

I have searched Evernote helps everywhere but cannot figure out how to sync my 2.2 database into the 3.0 beta. I see many references from Evernote to do this but absolutely no explanation of how to do this synchronization of databases.

#80 - Have you figured out how to import the EN 2.2 database into beta 3.0?

It seems Evernote could easily provide info on how to import and/or sync between 2.2 and beta3.0. Why not explain this procedure somewhere?

Very frustrated!

Dear Evernote,

I love the beta but I have a few problems that are hurting my experience.

The client needs the ability to drag and drop and upload the file to the site instead of creating a local entity on the client's desktop (music files however, don't have this problem).

And if you try to edit a note on the website (and it has that same desktop link to a file) it will require you to retype the title exactly. Same goes for non titles (except it will create two notes). If you save the note and it's not the exact same title, you will create doubles of the note.

And how do we use the text recognization?

#158 For those of you having trouble with installing the 2.2 version:

This install is different from other GAOTD installs and is a two part process. When you run the setup.exe file, it will install another exe file on your system called "EverNote_2.2.1.386.exe". Unless you changed the default directory when you first ran the setup.exe file, this should be located in the C:\ directory. Run this file and it should guide you through the install.

One of Evernote's most touted features was the category intersection panel. Evernote claimed this device could help the user find new relations within the data. The category intersection panel has been removed from this version, a fact that deflates my opinion of the product a bit, because Evernote must have continued to promote the feature as an effective way to look at the data, after it knew the feature was not even strong enough to warrant continued support.

I am also disappointed that the developer misleadingly refers to the beta-testing as "invitation only," when an invitation is to be had at the price of its mere request.

The beta version downloaded and installed on my Vista Home Premium 32 bit with no problem. When I went to register for the beta trial, I was disappointed to discover that the site offers no support for the Opera web browser, which I use and will continue to use until Secunia
Software Inspector no longer tells me that Opera is still the most secure browser around. However, I was still able to sign in and navigate the site; and they do have a profusely apologetic note indicating that Opera support should be available in the coming weeks.

I was unable to add the web clipper icon to Opera's tool bar, but was able to use Evernote's clipping and pasting functions that pop up in a right click menu, when clicking on selected text and images. The code for the icon does display, so it should be possible to make a toolbar icon using Opera's tutorials available on their website.

The account activation process asked which OSs I hope to use Evernote with and offered Linux as one of the choices. However, I don't see that a Linux version is actually available, unless they are talking about Mac OS X, which does not work on a PC.

I am not certain whether I have actually registered for the beta trial because the registration page did not do anything when I pasted in the code I received from the confirmation email. So I don't know whether my beta will time out as betas usually do or whether it will continue as the GOTD version will.

Because of this, and because I like some of the functionality in version 2.2 that is lost in the beta (the flags and the history notes), I decided to download the 2.2 version that is also available from GOTD, because, according to previous comments, I should be able to run both versions parallel.

Not. It downloaded and installed (thanks to comment #62) into its own directory. Both versions run, but neither of them actually functions now. Right clicking on selected text in a web page now brings up Opera's file management and editing functions, not Evernote's. I can copy to a note in Opera's built in note taking data base, as before; but the note does not show up in Evernote's data base.

Perhaps this is because the install of 2.2 asked me to "update the data base" in order to continue. Which data base? I have 2.0, 2.2, and 3.n installed now, and the wonderfully informative dialogue box did not specify. Since I had seen a picture of Alex's brain in an introductory video on the Evernote website http://www.evernote.com/about/beta/tour/, I decided to initiate a telepathic communications session with Alex Patchikov and query his mental data base. That query was not recognized by his server.

Or perhaps it's because the activation note from GOTD still said "beta activated" after the 2.2 install.

I am not impressed with handwriting recognition software, and won't be until it starts to recognize Forkner shorthand, because my handwrting is too idiosycratic for the software to learn to recognize.

Well, I have already wasted three hours on this nonsense; so, I think I will just stick with Opera's own inbuilt note taking capabilities, which integrate nicely into the Linux version and the mobile version of Opera.

This is an awesome download. I have been using the free version for years and now giveaway of the day gives the complete version for free!! (make sure you check the link above the download for the full (non beta) version).
Even the beta version is great because it has some incredible features such as syncing over the net (requires you to create a free account). The one feature that blows me away on the beta is the ability for the program to recognize text in pictures. You can have it search through .jpg files and find text in them... INCREDIBLE!! Thanks GAOD. By the way, the fact that there are so many negative reviews really makes me believe that people either do not test the programs they review or they simply click on the negative after reading the word Beta... really sad because both the beta and the full downloads at GAOD are incredibly useful.

Oh wow! This is brilliant software, really flexible, powerful and useful, but it puts me right back in a quandary from which I thought I'd extracted myself. Over the last few months I've been evaluating various web clippers like Evernote, Google Notebook, and Firefox's Scrapbook - with Clipmarks still on my To Do list. Originally I was more or less happy with EverNote's functionality, despite never liking its fiddly user interface very much, but when I discovered Google Notebook I switched to that because I wanted integration with Firefox. I rapidly discovered that Google Notebook has a fiendishly awkward interface so I exported all my notes into Google Docs, and from there it was a short step to clip them in Firefox's Scrapbook. I absolutely love Scrapbook - it's so simple and convenient, and I like backing up my data locally. But I was still bothered about all the data I'd left behind inside my desktop EverNote database, and the fact that I can only access my Scrapbook data while working at home. I thought to myself that if EverNote ever came up with a mobile, web-based version then Scrapbook would be under pressure. And so it has come to pass!

Obviously I haven't had time yet to do very much with Evernote 3.0 Beta but I can report that the installation of the latest 2.2 desktop client over my existing trial version went smoothly, and so did the installation of the new Beta client, and the synchronisation with the server.

My first impressions of the new web-based app, as well as the latest versions of both desktop clients, are very positive. I really like the simple, open and uncluttered layout of the web interface. I think it offers a more intuitive way of displaying and browsing notes than the desktop clients - even the new improved ones.

As I mentioned, I never liked the user interface on the trial version of the 2.2 Evernote desktop client which I was running up until today. It had lots of bells and whistles I never used, and which I won't miss in the beta app at all, but much worse, I always found it visually cluttered - to the point of being unpleasant to use. I didn't like the notes browser, the scrollbar, or the top-heavy design of the main window and the notes, and I really disliked the way that open notes always grabbed the entire window, so the main app was hidden. So: I really like the design changes to the interface of both the desktop clients - 2.2 and 3.0 - with notes opening in a separate window, and a far less intrusive design all round. The desktop clients are now much cleaner, simpler and easier to use. And I'm confident that I'll start using EverNote again as a result of this.

Some requests for EverNote :

1. Please make it possible to add tags via the desktop client's open note window. I've always found it frustrating that you have to close a note to tag it, when I usually want to copy and paste words from the content into the tags. (It's great that it's so easy to add and delete tags to/from open notes on the web app!)

2. On the web app, please rethink the tiny little Actions menus tucked away at the bottom of each section of the navigation menu. It shouldn't be necessary to scroll right to the bottom of the whole list of tags to delete a single tag. And I think it would be only too easy to accidentally delete the wrong object e.g. an entire notebook.

Anyway, many thanks and congratulations all round to EverNote for devising this killer application :-) and many thanks also to GotD for bringing it to our attention. Cheers!

Thanks to Evernote for providing an alternate installation file for Evernote 2.2. I was one of those who couldn't install the first one. The install went perfectly this time.

I also installed the beta and look forward to what the final product will be.

THANK you, GOTD; this couldn't have come at a better time. I've been using the trial version of EverNote 2.2 for a couple of months--since I discovered that the old vers. 1.5 had been replaced by 2.2. I just got a message that the trial version is going to expire in 5 days and the advanced features will go away. I doubt I will use the advanced features, since I don't have a camera phone or a tablet to write on. But I've been wishing that I had known about the EverNote giveaway a few months ago.

PROBLEM, however: I chose not to install the beta version. But when I installed the 2.2 version, I got this message: "Evernote Beta activated - what next?" AND EverNote still displays EverNote (Trial). Does this mean that for some reason that I don't understand I still have the trial version or does the name just display that way. If I uninstall the trial version and reinstall the full 2.2 giveaway, will I be unable to because I've already installed it--according to GOTD's records?

Note: Per #62, I did follow the instructions in the readme file (after I downloaded and extracted EverNote(fix).zip, and ran Setup.exe, but there was no 'EverNote_2.2.1.386.exe' file to then run.

I guess it doesn't matter a whole lot--I just would like to disable the nag window (which is nothing compared to most software producer's nag windows). BTW I found out about Giveaway of the Day when I went to an EverNote forum to find out how to do something.

People who complain about the giveaways are just wasting our reading time. If you don't want to use a program, that's your perogative, but don't whine about it. In the few weeks I've been getting GOTD I've found 2-3 programs that might turn out to be useful to me, and that's wonderful.

Here's how I use EverNote: To keep notes I see in mail lists (and even in GOTD messages) about programs or web sites I might want to check out; to clip ideas for crafts that I might eventually do (or not); to remind myself of things I need to do, as I think of them; to track changes I've made to my computer, especially programs I've added or those I've tried and didn't like, with notes on why, so I don't try them again in a few months; to track genealogy searches, tips, data; to track medical information I've looked up on the web; to track doctor appointments for myself and my pets or to remind me to make appointments months from now; to keep recipes, with photos of the item when available, etc, etc, etc. Now I can easily find all those notes just by looking in the categories, instead of trying to remember where I put them on my computer.

I use EverNote for both temporary and long-term storage of notes. I used to store all the information I needed in files and folders, but finding what I needed was almost impossible--even though I thought I had a logical system. Now it's easy to find what I need. The search with word highlighting is fast and easy. Another feature I love is that when I clip an article from the web, I don't have to lose the image(s) that come with it or save the image separately to import into the article, as I did when I used a word processing program. A feature I just discovered recently, which makes EverNote even better for me, is that I can have more than one database. I do so much genealogy research that having a separate db for that alone is great. However, I also decided to keep a separate crafts db, even though I don't add much to it yet. For me, it's just easier to keep it separate. I could go on and on about what a great program this is.

The main con for me is that the Help file isn't very complete--typical of too many programs these days. A few minutes ago I discovered how to display just the name I want for each database--not the full pathname. Then I went looking for somewhere in the help file that would tell me how to do that--but, of course, didn't find it. Same for how to create separate databases. (I had to go to the EverNote forum to find that out.)

Thanks, EverNote and GOTD, for this great giveaway.

P.S. Note one problem with EverNote--the number "1." at the beginning of my comment. I wrote my review in EverNote because it's faster, but EN put the number in and I can't figure out how to remove it.

Don't expect GOTD to help on this one. I too have the same problem, and posted earlier. Any suggestions? Nyet! Post removed. Am truly appreciative of the offers from GOTD, and will continue to haunt the site in future.

After installing, I signed up for an account per the instructions and have received no email back. This doesn't mean the giveaway will expire and after all that, no Evernote...does it??

I've received no email confirmation reply. What do we do now?

@64
"I don’t object to official beta GAOTD offerings but would like to suggest that as a reward for providing the developer with a valuable source of beta-testers that the developer should re-submit the stable release once it becomes ready forgeneral reease.

I agree with your post, 101%, but there is something you need to know, i think this is what you want :)

#6 asked>

Will the software become disabled once the retail version comes out?
No, it won’t become disabled. You’ll be able to auto-update to later beta versions and to “final” releases. Note that starting with this new version all Evernote clients (Windows/Mac/Windows Mobile) work with Evernote service. You’ll be able to keep using the account you create during beta. It will just get better and better… ;)

The beta installed perfectly. Thank you.

However, nothing I do will make the Evernote EverNote_2.2.1.386.work.

Every time, I get a message saying that the GOTD offer has expired, and that I will have to buy it.

Alexy, I have followed your advice in #62, created a special folder for EverNote_2.2.1.386.exe when I couldn't find one already, and still, always that message.

It makes no sense to me, especially since others have succeeded.

Time is running out on the offer for this exceptional program, so I'd be very grateful for any suggestions. It's driving me nuts.

Well, I hate to say it but I am thinking about a thumbs down here. I have tried to register an account as requested, but have received no reply and it has been hours now.
