When recording LP's - depending on when it feels like it - sometimes I can record albums at a time with no problems and other times it records far 5 - 10 seconds and stops. What could be the problem?

I agree with #145 completely. It is painfully slow, and hogs the system resources severely. Processor performance monitor shoots up, and remains for long time. Every other media playing at that time stops. Definitely a thumbs down.

I installed this on three different systems. It is painfully slow. I am currently evaluating audio recording and editing software. This touts great features but it is impracticably slow. I have to give this package a thumbs down.

# 120 Mel,
You can use Screamer Radio to Play and Record any supported stream you want, you just have to know the URL stream address. Just open Screamer Radio, click "File" and then "Open URL" and put the URL of the stream in there to listen to any supported stream type with Screamer Radio. I do it all the time and have my favorite streams under "History" and just click on them to listen whenever I want. Or you can add your streams to "Favorites" too. I recommend you try the latest beta version, which works great for me. Screamer Rules!

Couldn't get it to record w. my sound card (Maya 44). I use an internal audio patch rerouting software right now to do it--sends any audio output or player on my machine, to any audio input or recorder--was hoping this would be simpler. Still, can't complain about a freebie. Thank goodness I didn't pay for this.

I understand how to register w/ the activate key -[very simple, easy, straight forward,-just read the directions]- but my confusion is this: -This is the same install process used for "AVS AUDIO EDITOR" [-a while back] -which installed w/ a key in its folder; -then when you install this-[AVS AUDIO RECORDER] it installs it in the same "AVS4YOU" folder as 'AVS-AUDIO-EDITOR'. But it doesn't include an additional key. So the only key is the same as before-[I checked the date = 2-24-07];...
****QUESTION: So if I use that key again, will it work for this-[AUDIO-RECORDER],-AND will it 'OVER-RIDE'-[cancle-out] the register for 'Audio-Editor' ??????!
---[Is it the same key for both/[or ALL their SW ]?? -[or did this new DL's key 'REPLACE' the old one and you just can't tell?]---

See,.. I'm confused! >> PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN ADDITIONAL QUESTION: **If its true -[as stated in an above post]- that 'a REGISTER' gives you 'FREE access to their products for a year', then if you registered the 'Audio-Editor' already, -then the 'Audio-Recorder' would be free to use anyhow -[correct?]-[the site doesn't say how they confirm that;-if you need to enter the code for each new DL or not]. ---
-- >> *Or does this not apply to the GAOTD downloads ??

Thanks for all the comments. Glad I decided to stay and read. Will not be using this piece of software. Too many folks having problems with it and being a cpu hog gets black marks from me. My computer has a tendency to totally freeze up with proggies who hog all the resourses, so I will delete.

Ya'll quit picking on the person with Win95. Not everyone who has a computer can afford to upgrade. I was lucky and my daughter bought me a laptop with XP for xmas 2 years ago. And to the person who suggested she/he right click, you can't do that on Win95, don't know about ME but I know that is a function of XP. The explanations of where to find the program needed were helpful.

Will also be going to find this other freeware program a lot of you were telling us about. Sounds much better than this one.

Was immediately disappointed when I opened the help file and realized I only had a small bit of the program, but then again it was free.

Really love this site and have been telling everyone I know about it. Please keep them coming. Even if I can't use the day's offering I know somewhere down the line will be something I can use. Thank you!

It does not work properly with Win2000 and SoundBlasterLive.

First it could not find gdiplus.dll and after solving that problem it just start and need 2 minutes to start working... It can not detect input devices (none of them).

I just wasted 2 hours for nothing.

These COMMENTS each day (and forums occasionally) are the REAL value of this site. As a budding computerphile who knows just enough to be dangerous, I've learned SO MUCH here; from exactly what these programs do and don't do (no unpleasant surprises), to installing them correctly, to getting plug-ins and other enhancements, to using the programs properly and completely. If I tried to this on my own without the help I find here, there could/would be hours of frustration and/or discouragement.

Also, perhaps MOST VALUABLE are the many comments linked to Nfo and programs that are often more useful (to me) than those showcased. For example, comment #s 121, 118, 87, 24, 31, 43, 65,67 above, and others.

I learn more and retain the knowledge better when there's a specific program sitting in front of me to figure out, versus the more theoretical discussions and the various forms of self aggrandizement (flaming usually) that go on in some forums. The discussions here keep me on track toward a clear goal with a defined payoff; the program working as advertised and sometimes with cool surprises I didn't expect. That's the key for me.

So, echoing many others, thank you GOTD for EVERYTHING you offer us here. As more folks hear about GOTD, I hope your bandwidth can handle it....

BTW, nice little collection of basic freeware that you offer on the GOTD home page.

My last post wasn't very clear, was it?

Anyhow, AVS AR is nice. It records. Then again, as many pointed out, there's about a 10 second lag and it freezes more than it should (I've never actually had this freeze thing occur yet, but that seems true enough). Audacity, on the other hand, works.

PEOPLE PLEASE!! If you want to record ANY audio being played through the speakers, use Audacity and set the source from the default of "Microphone" to "Stereo Mix". As for AVS's claim of recording from records, all you need is a wire with the standard headphone jack at both ends, availible at radioshack for $5, plug one end into the record player, the other end into the line in jack on the computer, set Audacity to "Line In", and hit record. I have never had any problem with Audacity, none of this hanging record time, and it does all of the AVS features, and more, for free. Yes, you can even use it to record internet radio.

For #29: I doubt that any program for GAOTD would even run on a 95 machine, so you're not missing out on anything.

I got a key. Last time I tried to register one of their items, I couldn't find it quickly under "all programs" so I went to "My Comuter", selected the hard drive, then went to a previous "registration" icon. That allowed me to enter the key.

Again, thanks to those who offer alternative freeware.

Get Audacity instead from the Source Forge site. Audacity records and has full editing capability and it's free everyday so you can always get any upgrades.

AVS Audio Recorder only records, no editing functions. Besides from the comments and BladedThoth's review AVS Audio recorder has some serious bugs. CPU overload at start is partly because AVS puts Themida in their software. In case anyone doesn't already know, Themida's there solely to protect the developer's program from reverse engineering. But it also loads separately into memory, stays there when it's containing program is closed, and eats CPU power. Since Audacity is open-source freeware it doesn't have Themida or anything else like it, just a good recorder and editor all in one.

To all the posts reporting that the programs states that there is not enough space to record, you need to "repair" AVS Audio Recorder (found under Start, All Programs, AVS, Repair) for the program to continue recording ~properly (and I use properly loosely). Once again, another issue that NEEDS to be fixed by AVS's programming department before the sales department can do their job.

Download, setup/install and basic run of the program was successful, but the slow speed and high CPU drain made this download not worth the trouble. Grabbed Audacity instead, it works great.

Thanks for the software, GOTD, it's a great piece in theory but needs more work on the Developer's part :)

#29 Right click on the *.zip file and choose the option "Extract All." This should solve your "what the tar is a zip file" unless you have an early version of windows. Your other option is to do a Google search for zipper programs. As far as being able to walk upright #40) he/she can type so I'm sure this is a joke post.

#49 Watch the task manager to find out that it is calling up a secondary program called AVS Audio Recorder with a different icon or I believe it is essentially calling home while it appears to be "doing it's thing." The task manager will report "not responding" during this session. A little patience (like that's what I want in a program) and it will get right back on task. It is the unusually high number of times that this secondary program is called up that concerns me and brings everyone's system (and the AVS Recorder) to a halt. My reason for commenting on the SERIOUS programming issues related to this software.

#99 Interesting and useful information on activation for the whole suite!!!

#101 It's calling home, give it a chance so you can get the wonderful morphing effects of this recorder :).

Many of the posts list Audacity and I have to agree it is a very nice freeware that WORKS lite.

#95 CyberGranny, try the backup/restore within Advanced Window Care (hopefully you created that file), try a system restore, or you may need to do a recovery since you have most assuradely screwed up your registry. The ability of these programs to report what it thinks is wrong with your registery is their primary value, you as a user must make EDUCATED decisions regarding any changes. Everything they report as wrong may not necessarily be wrong. If you are not interested in spending the time in learning what/where/why/how of the registry (and isn't that why we wanted the program to do), registry cleaners should probably be left in the category of if it's not broke, don't fix it or USER BEWARE!!!

Ok, I'm looking for something to record internet radio while I'm listening to it streaming. Does this do that? I've tried Screamer Radio but that doesn't work unless the station is one that is preloaded on the app. I tried SmartPCRecorder and it doesn't have that option. Does this app do it? Is there a way to indicate recording from the sound board (or whatever) other than the 'in' line plug or microphone? Hope that makes sense. Please help ??

I am a little disappointed at this one. It isn't good for anything except making an audio recording. You can't edit, load existing audio files, etc.

A freeware program which has MUCH greater funstionality would be Audacity. With this you can record, edit to a huge degree, split, mix, and just about anything else, with any file.

Activation was a bit different and until I read the tiny grey box a complete mystery. The third line of the grey box stated "Start > All Programs > AVS4YOU > Activation." The activation was handled by going to the

Start menu, calling up "All Programs" choose
AVS4You, in this sub folder look for the program
Activation (along with AVS Audio Recorder) and run it, and then
Input the Key provided in the first installation grey box.

Do not use the Register button (found in the lower left corner of the AVS Audio Recorder window, that is a "call home" button and will not register this software.

Ok activation is complete. I fire this puppy up trying to use it and DANG (I always keep my task manager up and running for emergency shut downs) this program is a CPU/Memory HOG, and cannot make up its mind as to whether it is registered or not (actual time to get itself up, running and comfortable that I was a legit user was about three minutes). Throughout this process Task Manager reported five cycles of Not Responding/Running. My CPU usage went through the roof (even Nero 7 at full throttle won't do this).

Ok let's try recording a simple old time radio program playing through Real Player. I chose midrange levels of recording and pressed the "next" key once again the program sent the CPU through the roof but only two cycles of Not Responding/Running with 43 Mb of memory usage. Are you bored to tears, me too.

OK let's listen to it. Well is this supposed to be a morphing program? Kind of a cool tinny effect, sounds like the difference between a regular piano and a honky tonk piano, but I'm not sure this is the intended function of this software.

Essentially, EVERY STEP of the operation of this software requires a secondary program to be called up which appears to be calling up the software's home. What is worse, it needs to call home at least twice for each step in the recording process (as if five times wasn't enough when I started the program). If this is the full version and if this is what I am to expect from the software normally, I believe I will pass not only on the give aways from this company but on the full suite offered by AVS. This software has serious reprogramming issues considering the long pauses and high memory/CPU usage.

I know it isn't free, but one of my favorite inexpensive audio/video suites is distributed through NCH along with the Swift converter. But, by the time you get done buying this suite, you might as well buy Nero 7 with a bit more testing, a bit more name recognition, and a bit more technical support. The Swift Audio/Video Suite has the added value of being lighter on memory/CPU than Nero 7 due to the nature and the purpose of distribution by NCH (distributes the suite for use with their encryption software [what they are really selling]).

Sometimes you get what you pay for and this is definately one of those times (as long as you got it for free and didn't pay a dime for it). So far, the offerings from AVS have been disappointing due to underlying problems with the software's functionality and tendency to hog system resources (AVS Audio CD Grabber). I appreciate the opportunity to test portions of this audio/video software suite, since it has saved me from purchasing the software. I was in the market for an audio suite that was not as memory intensive as Nero 7, I strongly believe I have eliminated at least one of my choices.

Ah, nice prgrm. Somethin ive wanted to do before is recording directly from the sound card so i can scrap my cable that links up the line in and line out sockets, as this gives background noise from changing the signal from digital to analogue and back to digital again. For messin around with the sounds, i advise Audacity, it is freeware, and is quite a powerful tool that is darn useful

Yes BladedThoth, they really need to do something with the coding. 10 years from now, the hardware will be available to probably run this one very nicely. But we don't have time to wait until then. :(

Once so far (about 4 hours of recording) the recording stopped saying it was out of disk space while all of my partitions have GBs free. LOL I am recording in WMA format, I don't know if this really matters though. That definitely a bug in the program. I don't know yet what trips it.

Those that only wants the latest version, are you sure you wouldn't mind an earlier version without this bug? I know I would. As there is nothing worse while recording something live and the recorder stops! :(

Those offering free alternatives... well they only offer a few formats like WAV (bloated), MP3 (still bloated, but not as bad), etc. But formats like WMA will give you very small files size and very exceptional quality. So for some of us, we have to look towards commercial audio recorders like this one. :)

P.S. I have had different problems with I-Sound, which I won't go into here. So if you had problems too and have a speedy system, this one might fit the bill. :)

I've downloaded and use various software packages from youe website.
This piece of junk should NOT even be given away!!
Once I installed it, it took approx 45 seconds to try and get from step 1 to step 2. After that it wouldn't respond.
Had to forcefully shut it down.

Stupid me!! I tried again to use the program, same results.
Will delete it from my computer, and NEVER again use any software from

As for referrals for this software forget it!!!!
