Angel's Vox is the very first audio player for Windows designed specifically for audiobook enthusiasts. How often have you had to find the last track and position played after an interruption in listening? Would you like to listen to several books or podcasts at the same time, and to not lose your place in each one? Would you like to be able to speed-up a book's playback to save you time, or to slow it down when you cannot recognize the speech (e.g., when you are learning a foreign language)? Angel's Vox is an innovative and handy solution!

With the help of Angel's Vox, you can maintain a library of your audio books. You can configure a different volume level and playback speed for each one, and their settings will be restored when you replay them. Their track position will also be restored to the exact point where you have stopped listening to them.

Angel's Vox is integrated with Audiobook Downloader Pro, and, like other media player programs, it can also be embedded into the Windows Explorer shell for quick access to its major functions.

#40-41, itdontwork, it's called "user error". On Vista and higher, security was greatly improved over XP and Program Files is a protected location. Portable apps have no security and should not be installed there. Similarly, normal program installs to locations other than the Program Files on your system volume will not be secure. You can just move or copy the Angel's Vox portable files elsewhere, if Norton allowed them to be installed, which your second comment implies that it didn't, but your first comment implies that it did. Also, if Norton did allow the files to be installed but put them in quarantine and thereby blocks copying, you'll have to figure out how to get them out of Norton's quarantine, but again your first comment implies that that's not the case.

Installed just fine on win7Ult/64. I looked around the website and cannot find any reference to Audio Vox being FREESTANDING. Some comment about the downloader having that status but that is a different issue?

If anyone knows about the free standing utility please post how to get it even if its past the free offering? But even better in the next hour or so?

thanks.

Is the sound quality a little better or alot better then window media player or my favorite - Winamp, which I use 90 percent of the time! My son perfers real player!! My reason I like Winamp is the skins and controls work great, but same sound quality noted with five other players! Not seeing any thing mention about Angel’s Vox 1.5, not sure I download this?

I forgot to mention the most important detail. After I install the portable app. (in either the regular program files or program files x86 folders) Norton says "SONAR has stopped the setup.exe file from going because it is deemed to be malicious." (Norton doesn’t say that exact phrase), then puts it into quarantine.

The program is still located in the folder I defined, but when I try to run it the stuff happens in my previous post which states "34.The portable app doesn’t work on my 64 7 pro system. When I install it, it says it installed correctly but when I try to open the program I get an error “Cannot open file:’C:\Program Files (x86)\angelsvox-portable\AngelVox.dat’ Error code: 5. ErrorMessage: Access is denied – Native error: 30364″. I don’t know what’s going on but if the company that made it can fix it I hope they can let me know."

I don't know what all this means (is Angels Vox malware or a virus, is it just my computer doing this, is the program poorly programmed, is Norton the cause of this issue due to an unknown defect?, etc.). All these reasons and more I could hypothesize but what is the right one? If the company can please get to this problem a.s.a.p. and fix it, again I would greatly appreciate it.

What a treat to find this here. I got an earlier version from GOTD and have been enjoying it a lot. Easy to use, great sound quality.

Simple reg and install, and it automatically upgraded from the previous version and saved the files I'd created there. Now I'm playing one, which adds to the enjoyment.

Happy customer. Thanks SuperUtils and GOTD.

I was impressed that it found the last version 1.2, updated it flawlessly and then I was able to pick up where I left off in the Larsson books, The Girl who Kicked the Hornet's Nest.

I think more skins, some pastel? would be nice. As for features I do not like that the countdown mode is a negative (imaginary number). I would prefer that it was a real number. I would also like that the countdown number be on the same line as the counter which I can toggle on and off.

I also don't like that the MUTE button seems always to be MUTE ON so it is hard to see when it really is on and off. I think when it is on the NO sign should be gone and when it is MUTE it should be ON and shown.

Grab it. Speed control with automatic pitch correction!

Great for podcast listening when you're working at your PC. Remembers where you left off listening in the previous session.

I agree with what Nebulous (#18) alluded to, that selling this as a PC audiobook player will not reach the wide audience it deserves. Streaming, or playing the PC speakers loud while doing things away from the PC, ok. But working on the PC? It's too hard to focus on both audiobook listening and PC work. That's the reason why we usually only listen to audiobooks away from the PC, while walking, driving, cleaning house, etc. Podcasts, on the other hand, can be listened to like background talk radio. No big deal if you missed something. But better than radio because no commercials and that fabulous fast playing (I set the "Tempo" slider to about 1.4x) with pitch correction.

Use the "File" menu to get your playlist of podcasts, then after you listen to each podcast, the drop-down arrow next to the "X" allows you to physically remove the listened-to podcast from your PC (fixed in 1.5, didn't work in 1.4.4), just great.

Supporting Android and similar small platforms is a great idea for audiobook listening. To compete with the Android app MortPlayer Audiobook, SuperUtils would need to enhance to support resume points for multiple audiobooks, which seems a non-trivial enhancement or re-design. But even ported as-is with its speed control with pitch correction, it'd still be a winner.

Clean and simple UI. Great skip-forward shortcuts (right arrow for 5 secs., "s" for 30 secs). Portable version available! What are these thumb-downers thinking?

@booknut, #18: That's because MS charge a developer about $1500 to include the code needed to support playback of protected WMAs within their applications. This is why applications that support playback of protected WMAs are so few in number.

This is a nice and handy app for listening to audiobooks which I do quite a bit at night as an alternative to reading since I now need glasses and I don't like to read with them on in bed.

I too wish it had an equalizer of some tone control since fidelity of a lot of sound files needs improvement. With the name Angel's Vox you'd expect that it does something to improve the sound quality. The features I like a lot is the sleep timer and the big and simple controls for speed etc. I'll be keen to see how the remote control functions work as well. These features keep it simple and useful for night listening.

I wouldn't mind paying the shareware fee for this if the download manager was then bundled in, the cost of the two is not really worth it in my opinion. I certainly appreciate the GOTD though!

I think it's time for GOTD to reconsider its thumbs up/thumbs down rating system. Here's a product that's getting good reviews and, perhaps more importantly, no glitch warnings. Whenever I see a thumbs down, I think "bad product, stay away." In this case the negative votes seem to indicate "no thanks, not for me."

I realize that it's hard to give up the iconic thumbs, but I suspect that the GOTD community would welcome a rating system with a little more nuance.

I like the desktop version of this software and it installs fine on my computer (Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit.) I installed the portable version on a USB drive and all was well until I removed the drive and reinstalled it. The portable version does not run and I get an error message stating that "The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.DLL." I have not tried using portable software before so it may be that I've failed to do something during installation.

One disappointment I have is that Angel's Vox does not support wma files. Many of my audiobooks are in this format. I know that I could convert them to the mp3 format but that seems to be a lot of extra effort just to use this program. I would probably not purchase Angel's Vox for this reason.

This is a nice little app. Unfortunately, lack of an equalizer is a deal breaker for me. As many of us get older we need to "turn up" the highs and "turn down" the lows. Otherwise, much of the speech sounds muffled. When I try a new audio player the first thing I do is activate the equalizer and tweak the settings. Since I cannot find an equalizer in Angel's Vox it looks like this program is of no use to me.

Quick and easy install on Win7 x64. Works so far as described and is indeed very easy to pick up. As a side note, SuperUtils might consider making versions that also work on Kindles, Androids, etc.. Lots of people are now going that route as well :-)Thanks again for a great piece of software!

This is an awesome program! Fast download, no hassle installation, instant load on start, clean and easy interface, and great features!

I would love to see a couple of expansions:
(1) create an android app with this same functionality so I can use it on my phone.

(2) Import audiobooks from Audible.

The *only* problem with this program is a problem with its category, not with this development. By that I mean, I and I'm guessing most audio-bibliophiles are more likely to listen to books in our car, while we're walking, etc. - times when the computer isn't available.

Still, kudos to SuperUtils and thanks to GAOTD!

Ok, just tried it and it does not seem to support any wma protected files at all, which makes it all but useless for library downloads (they have expiration times on them such as 7 days to 3 weeks). You would think it would recognize the permissions granted on your computer, since you have to be logged in for the first play. It does work on bought and free audio books, but that is the low end of what I listen too.

I'm quite content with the version 1.4 (previous GAOTD)
tho' I only use it to slow down trax without changing the pitch
So before trying this version I'm checking out what's new

According to the site :

Version History

New features marked with a plus symbol (+),
and improvements with an exclamation mark (!).

1.5 (December 9, 2010)
[+] Added integration with Audiobook Downloader Pro.
[!] Updated the internal audio playback library.
[!] Updated the internal audio effects library.
[!] Fixed skinning of the two main lists: Library and File List.
[!] Some minor tweaks.

1.4.5 (August 2, 2010)
[!] Improved backing up on updating the database at program startup.
[!] The readme documentation was expanded by adding a new paragraph into it.
[!] Enhanced UI of the Enter Code dialog window.
[!] A few internal enhancements.
[!] Version information was added into the product installer.
[!] Now the uninstaller also removes the database backup if the user chose to delete user data.

Hope this helps
Thumb(s) up for me

A lovely little app, I've been using the previous GOTD version of this since it was given away and recommended it to a partially sighted user that I know. It appears to integrate with the GOTD Audiobook Downloader if you're upgrading AngelsVox 1.5 to the same installation folder as you'd installed the previous GOTD before, as I see no 30 day trial warning mentioned by Yury.

Windows Media Player Classic can remember the last video and audio position so you can pick up where you left off.(if you tick the right box) Don't really need another program to clutter up the hard drive.

Um. If your looking for free public domain audiobooks to play on the angel vox you can go to http://www.audiobooksforfree.com/home plus project gutenberg has em too, as I see the audiobook downloader by superutils is not free. But really with a little effort you can find free modern book podcasts, free public domain classics yourself. Or I've even converted text books using text to speech, so don't be put off by the audiobbook downloader not being free.

Very generous superutils for offering the PORTABLE version of Angel Vox. Thank you. As always the portable version doesn't clog our registry and if we put the program on a non-registry drive we don't have to worry about registry system crashes.

I tried the library/import audiobook for a podcast--didn't work (for podcast). So then I tried 'play file'--worked nice on my windows 7 netbook. I like that you can control the tempo which can come in handy in some situations (class lectures come to mind). There also seems to be a sleep feature and you can keep the control window 'on top'. There are 5 skins that come with the player, unfortunately all are the same size as I would have liked an option to make the control window smaller. (The control window takes too much space but can be minimized to the start bar.) Recently i downloaded gpodderportable, a podcast downloader from portableapps.com so I have lots of podcasts to listen to.

There are many free players out there, but in my opinion as a portable, Angel Vox has enough extras to be a keeper.

Free alternatives (what I was using for podcasts) VLC portable (an all-in-one player at portableapps.com that's worth having). There's also the reg window's media player and music players like coolplayer portable, xm player player portable.

Anyway thank you again superutils and giveaway of the day for Angel vox.

Instant install. Happens occasionally at GOTD, it's like getting extra dark chocolates in a basket that you weren't expecting.

They even extend the courtesy of auto-opening the PDF help file (optional at initial startup).

This is a keeper. First, needs no help. It is so self-explanatory when you start using it that you have to laugh. More programs should be so easy.

No conflicts, none of the anti-software alarms rang.

Extra plus, it's lightweight, low RAM demand.
Having been here more than 1,200x, this one is an unusually good keeper, even though Audacity is the prime, and free alternative to most everything involving audio manipulation. Thanks to GOTD and SuperUtils, which also has other decent software.

Dear users, this is a quick start guide for the Angel's Vox audiobook player:

1. Download and install the program, then run it. The giveaway edition is already activated, so you do not need to deal with serial numbers.
2. Click the Edit -> Add Files(s) / Add Directory command and add book's files to the file list.
3. Hit the Library -> Add to Library menu command to name the current audio book.
4. If you want to add one more book into the library, call Library -> Create New, and repeat steps 2-3.
5. You can switch between audiobooks by double-clicking on a book's item in the Library list. The audiobook player will automatically remember the last played track & position for each book, as well as other playback parameters (the volume level, playback rate, tempo and pitch).

To learn more about the player, check out the following reviews:
