I'm running Win7-64 and the install went perfect....I don't understand all the folks with install problems...are they all still using Windows 95 or maybe XP?...It's the 21st. century!.....As for AbstractCurves, it's great...BUT...I have one small complaint, the dark UI is great, but there needs to be more contrast between the dark grey background and the light grey text...at first glance, it appears that the entire interface is greyed out...as in "not active"...and when you open some of the graphics, which are very vibrant, the UI looks even worse...it's a small detail but it would be much more comfortable on the eyes with more contrast.

During install (running as Administrator) on my Windows 7 64-bit system, a box saying "Host" was visible, but clicking it did nothing. If I unchecked "Standalone" the "Host" box disappeared. I would have liked to have used the program as a plug-in with Irfanview, but apparently the option wasn't functioning for me, so I went with the standalone version. Can someone give me a clue how to get the plug-in option to work?

Love this program! And I'll admit, I like it just for fun....I'm not like a professional or anything. :-) And just FYI, I ran setup, said "no" to run automatically, let it finish. Then I clicked on Activate. It seemed to work in my case. I still have Windows 7, Home, 64-bit. IF I upgrade to that Windows 10, all my GAMES & software had better still work! :-P

Installed on win7 64 bit;
This is really fun. Love it. May spring for a license to get the 64bit version so I can use the 64bit plugin.
Having good time making abstract wall papers.
The interface is a bit odd (no file, edit, etc. to do a File/save as) but it's really not difficult to figure out how to do things. Thanks GOTD

I just had to throw in another post, after managing to find some time to actually try out this particular piece of software. I once paid quite a bit for a set of fixed graphic backgrounds for video production. This app creates endless variations of graphic elements, and is reasonably easy to use. The quality is just as good as the stock packages I've paid good money for. The interface will intimidate some, but worth the effort if you need something like this for a DVD menu, titles, etc.

Before you thumbs down a free offering, take a moment and think about what you are doing. This one is a big thumbs up for me.

Two question:

Why all version are unable to install custom/plugin mode? I checked both online/GAOTD version and none of installers is able to install plugin version (does not show any photo*** application name) or custom version - only standalone.

2nd. Why here is 1.1.79 and online 1.1.90 what meaning for testing widelly outdated/upgreadable version?

I like it! Thank you AbstractCurves Software and GAOTD. I love these types of background images and enjoy being able to create my own that actually look good.
Works well on my Win7-64 machine with an old i7 920, 12GB RAM, and a 650Ti.

One suggestion (especially if asking $20 for this) is to include GPU acceleration. As it currently stands, I'd be willing to part with probably about $10. Adding the option to create animated files for HD video backgrounds would easily get me to part with $50...maybe more.

It installs OK but when running it on my Win7 laptop, it displays a too large window that does not fit the screen. And on top of that, the window refuses resizing. What I don't need is yet another buggy, unfinished product. And I also wonder why some companies still do not sign their install executables...?

Reply   |   Comment by Arne  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-3)

Also, after uninstall - both by the supplied link and via the control panel - the application STILL remains... :-(
Seems to be very sticky indeed. I don't know how to remove it now, annoying. Have to throw some virus eliminator at it.

It must be true that it doesn't work wirh XP. When I add a photo, JPEG, to make
it a preset, the picture stays for a split second then vanishes and it replaced by one
of the default presets.

Activation:
Sometimes I have this problem to.
First of all: the GOTD-program must be shut down and after that run Activate.
And I think, that it will help to start Internet Explorer and open a page.
Leave Internet Explorer open and start Activate.
And most of the tine Activate will continue.

This looks like quite an interesting little program. But my goodness - possibly one of the most complicated, crowded and dauntingly un-inviting interfaces I've seen outside of an Adobe product !
But it makes some pretty good images. A randomise button would be a good, simple addition - if there is already one there it got lost in the interface. Due to the cluttered feel I am afraid I won't be partaking.

Thanks for giving me the chance to give it a go though GAOTD.

Installed the program on a Win-7 64 bit machine without problems. Registration was a snap and I am going to enjoy this program which works pretty well.

Just a side note for people looking to upgrade to Win 10: After months Beta Testing I ran into problems when my Samsung EVO 250 died a couple of days ago. 1. The Insider Program is in a holding pattern until we can do a clean install. 2. My MS Office 2010 Plus (Third Party Vendor) Key Broke because the one size fits all activation computer doesn't recognize the key. I have a reservation with Ask MS to get this resolved over the phone. They did say that if we could not handle it over the phone that the will send an MS Certified Engineer to the house for us disabled folks. And what else will he install?? This is something to think about when OEM Win 10 Pro is $139 on disk or $199 on key are now there. I have found that it is best to do a clean Win 7 and then upgrade to Win 10. Since I am spoiled and not interested I am using Start 8 from IObit which makes Win 10 sing faster than the standard install and keeps all of the start menu we have all gotten used too!

So WIN 10 is a keeper, has improved security and is the MS future.

The GOTD for today is a keeper and just works!

Thanks GOTD

Installed on Windows 7 64-bit with no problems. Refreshingly, it doesn't want to install other garbageware. Had no problems registering.

Fun to play around with, this is pretty useful if you like to create abstract "masks" for use in PhotoShop.

Not an essential software but enjoyable. Thank you, GAOTD and AbstractCurves.

To correct any unproductive bias caused by disinterested thumbs down voters, I suggest GAOTD add a third selection choice (to thumbs up/thumbs down), perhaps :-| face, entitle "no interest" or "little interest". This would give the providers additional information and make the feed back to them more exact. Then if some one votes "down" it is more likely to be because they didn't like the software rather than they have no interest/use/desire etc.
I agree that individuals who are disinterested should not skew the "likability" of the offerings.
This is intended to be a two-way street. So why not make the result reflect user opinion more accurately?
There have been tons of video software over the years that I complained about (and even voted "down") because I had no interest and no perceivable need. (Ah, the times they are a-changing). So I can see how others might have done/do the same.
What do you say GAOTD?

I am enjoying this program greatly. I did hit an issue. When I went to save as a jpeg, I got a warning that this won't save the alpha channel so I declined. Rather than allow me to choose .bmp there, it just closed losing me the image.

Still, this is a great way to spend some time and get interesting results. Beats me what the definition of all these sliders is, but so what? They work.

I like the program, but the installation is poorly done. The only way I could register it was to uninstall, then open Windows 8.1 as Administrator, then the activation program worked. However, when I go back as the usual User, if I open the program normally, it only opens in trial mode, unregistered. I have to right-click the program exe file and Run As Administrator to get it to open in Registered mode. Weird. But the program's great when you finally get it open.

Downloaded, activated and I like it. There is a learning curve (pun intended) but I've already created an image and also saved it as a preset. I don't fully understand the association between an opened image or new image and the presets. they appear to take over but you have to create a new image or open one to get the program started in working out a pattern. I must find some tutorials on this program. This program is a keeper and a wonderful challenge to my creative impulses.

Very cool program. Automatic installation of the plug-in in Irfanview. The darkish interface seems packed but it's easy to work with, especially with sliders and additional fine tuning sliders for each generator setting. Preview is responsive.

Suggested minor improvements:
- When using a background image (e.g. with Irfanview), ability to move the curve anywhere (e.g. using the curve as watermark)
- Transparency level for the curve, not just the background
- Unlimited undo level instead of 10 or 15 (didn't count)
- Ability to save as a .fx template, which is an XML file, and add to a custom gallery
- Rotation

Regarding the help system. Although the instant preview gives hints on the effects, a bit of explanation wouldn't hurt. In the meantime, a lot of tries are required because there are many effects (counted 15 excluding rendering settings), some depending on others. I let you compute the number of combinations. So, it would be nice to have:
- A tooltip for each setting would be appreciated
- A tutorial (how to create the glass found in presets/items from scratch, for instance)

Then, rewriting the help system is mandatory. there is a very annoying flickering when you change page (an empty page gets in the way for about half a second). IMO, too much javascript for navigation.

I won't be able to draw a sheep but it's a fun tool to play with. Definitely a keeper. Thanks to AbstractCurves.

According to the Help file, the installer provides you 3 types of installation:

Standalone; Plug-In; Custom

Choose 'Custom' and you can select/unselect components which are ready to be installed (the installer automatically searches for compatible graphic hosts on your computer and displays a list of available components to install).

It looks like you can install both the 'Standalone' and/or plug-in(s), as there are checkboxes next to each of the options.

Amazing piece of software for free. The close button was obvious on the title bar for me in windows 8, 1440x900 screen.

I always install GOTD software in Safe Mode, as my Kasperski seems to have steady problems with the install/activate interface. As an enthusiast of pre-digital era twin generator sound synthesizers (what with all the osciloscope monitoring fun, etc) I find this software a superbly exciting giveaway. It installed and works fine for me (Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.) Also, I don't find the interface as 'abstract' as I see in the comments above, but I guess for a beginner it will take quite some playing around to become familiar with all the parameters. Thanks GOTD.

Perhaps I am missing something (I have only begun to examine the complicated interface) but it seems that the choice of colors is limited by the pattern initially chosen. I picked the 'dune' and the palette only offered variations of pink, red, yellow, orange and brown. Who are they to tell me I can't have a blue dune?

If I have overlooked something here I would be happy to be corrected. It could be a fun program if it would allow an unlimited choice of every parameter.

Reply   |   Comment by andrew  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+6)

You should have a scroll bar on the right side of colour picker window, and you can select other palettes at the top of the window. Click the double down arrow next to the x (close) of the window for an explanation of the various palettes. At the bottom right you can select different views (list, small icon, large icon).
If you click on the colour instead of the drop down arrow on the right, you can edit the colour manually.
I just made a purple and pink dune to test, works okay for me.

The task bar is there, it's just hidden offscreen. The bottom of the interface window may also be hidden off-screen, which is a problem because some controls are along the bottom. The interface window is designed to fit old monitor dimensions (640x480?), which conflicts with the widescreen monitors more common today. The interface window is resizable (but just a little bit) by positioning the cursor over the left or right edge of the interface window until you get a double arrow . Then make the interface window narrower, which will resize the interface window (aspect ratio remains the same), revealing the task bar with the "X" button. You can also click on the maximize button, which will make the interface window full-screen, revealing all of the controls (there are a LOT of them!).

Installed on and works on Windows 10. Using as a standalone software.

This is a really fun, and useful, piece of software. There's lots of room to play around with curves and colours. There are numerous 'Presets' ranging from Smoke effects to Flowers; these are very handy and you can easily change the preset colours.

I saved both a .jpg and .png image I'd created and used it as a background to my website...And it worked. There's no repeating of the image and it scrolls perfectly.

This is a great software for what it is meant to be used for.

Thanks to Abstract Curves Software and GOTD :)

Start up m$ internet explorer (instead of your real browser) and make sure m$ internet explorer is bringing up a random website as a test. You will PROBABLY have to change the workoffline setting on m$ internet explorer to display new sites. The random site verifies you're not displaying "offline residue."

Afterwards, you will probably have activation working.

Be sure to close m$ internet explorer afterward. You won't have to repeat this until the next time it happens.

This happens because some programs try to bring up a browser window when activated and sometimes that will crash the work offline settings. I have known about the problem here for many years and the simple way to solve it.

I, too, get the "Failed to connect" error msg. from GOTD during activating process. Tried all methods described @5 above. After many downloads from this site, today's and the HD Video Converter Factory Pro offered July 27 yielded same failure -- the last two I tried to download and the only two times I couldn't activate a program. Something different has taken place recently in the packaging re install and activate???

Many of us would appreciate a protocol to activate software after the offer expires, provided we post our lack of success before time runs out.

Installed and activated without problem.
A complex interface stunned me at the first glance. But the output image is really beautiful. Yes, I should take more time to learn it.

Ooo... Loving this one. Swirly patterns on a Monday morning - what's not to like? :~)
Also works very well indeed as a plugin in Paintshop Pro for even greater mangling possibilities. Activation is simply a matter of clicking on 'activate.exe' - not exactly rocket science!

...also, if you save an image, reopen it, and choose 'transparent background' you can build up layers as well - brilliant :~)

This program is not for everyone but it can create beautiful results, and is usefull for backgrounds, wallpapers on websites, emails, documents. Program is a bit unclear (f.i. "Ok" button in the right bottom edge closes the program) but after some while it is fairly easy to use. I find it best to set the rendering settings, top right, to low (it will save your art in the highest quality standard anyway standard, set by sprocket icon bottom left (there you can also set the compression in jpg)). If you move the "skew" and "balance" sliders, watch the small black and white "real time preview" area right beneath the bigger color preview area. There are lots of templates but don´t click on them if you have a beautiful result set (it will set the template immediately after clicking on it).
It is not neccesary to know what harmonics, phase shifts, input frequency skew or balance mean, no-one can calculate or foresee the results as fast as your computer can. Just slide the sliders and watch the real-time preview area till you have some nice picture. With scale and proportions, top right you can optimize your output.
To me the quality of the output far outweighs the sometimes unclear interface. Big thumbs up from me.

This program is interesting to play with (have fun with with all those slider)
but my 1366 x 768 monitor is too small for the program GUI, not really a matter because maximize the program will solve the problem.

This is pretty nice as far as the results are concerned. Overall, very nice graphics. Should be great for making backgrounds or wallpaper. Works standalone and as a '.8bf' plugin for Photoshop and other programs that support it. Supports alpha channel transparency which was a surprise and welcome feature. Opens and Saves bmp, jpg or png formats.
It suffers from a non-standard interface, which although it has arrows to indicate the steps involved, is just not very intuitive. I'm trying to figure out what the developer was trying to do here. I don't think it is different just to be different, I think it makes sense to the developer but it's so different from the norm that I'm having a difficult time with it. However, I think the results are worth a little learning curve. Thanks GOTD and Abstract Curves, this is a keeper.

Installed very easily and without problem.

A really nice piece of software which gives the user a lot of control over the output, has some interesting practical uses that I can see will be well explored. Also a great little time-waster by the look of it, I can also see myself playing with this just for the fun of it.

An absolute cracker of a keeper. Thank you GAOTD!
