#42, lostinlodos, as often happens, lack of real-time posting results in some communication issues; I have a pending comment which was posted before yours cleared. I can find no references anywhere to the features which you described. If you don't have a decent screen-capture utility, you can download a 30-day trial of NTWind WinSnap (the trial watermarks), or a fully functional older version (or use other software, such as the free version of Gadwin PrintScreen). You can use any of the various free photo hosts, and post links to the screenshots.

Fubar; the link you posted
http://www.regular-expressions.info/refflavors.html
states exactly what I said; that there are many flavours of expression syntax.
I wasn't saying any one is better or worse than the others, just that there is no total standard.
This handles what most standard run-of-the-mill Windows users would be familiar with. * + - | ,

According to Microsoft the use of the search function to search for files locally and on the internet at the same time (right click properties, settings, advanced) is called Windows Search Live. I used Microsoft's term for their products. Nothing more. Windows Search can be used for Find and Replace, it's an Ultimate Extra function. Can't recall exactly which one added the functions but head over to
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/features/extras.aspx
to check them out.

And I did mention that search and replace was "one of the few reasons for doing such a complete index" alluding to the need to turn on drive indexing as opposed to just the basic folders that it does by default.

I was really interested in this as I've been playing with a static dump of the English Wikipedia for a few months now. (Yes, I know it's outdated). Dealing with millions and millions of small html files, I need something that will search out key terms and replace them with a generic string I could use later to reorganize the pages.

For me, and this is a page of people's opinions, doing a large search and replace works best from the shell, and for making changes in code, NotePad++ does it just fine with NO EXPRESSIONS OF ANY FLAVOUR AT ALL. just double click to "find" every occurrence. Use the Find and Replace plugin to turn on/off Over-type Highlighted to replace all.

Thanks (genuinely) for the instruction Fubar.

However politeness is never a lost cause. Could the fact that "the boss you once had" is no longer your boss be connected with your approach to such submissions?

Thanks to all for the comments re alternatives to today's offering. I find such constructive comments an extremely valuable aspect of GAOTD.

Hi Folks,

A good discussion.

Best search and replace software discussion - Donationcoder 07/2007

Now here is the freeware roundup, 10 in all. Omitting the note/editor programs like Notepad++ ,Textpad, PsPad.. I include a little info, some others probably have good preview modes that I don't mention and features vary greatly.. Thanks for the new ones to me above, like grepWin.

The top three interest me the most, I used Inforapid a while back, although at the moment I am not doing a lot of search and replace.

NoteTab is a free, rock stable and all around excellent text editor that will do search and/or replace on multiple files at one time and takes regular expressions. It also has a very robust macro writing language and a lot of other features. Check it out at notetab.com.

#33, lostinlodos, you remind me of a boss I once had. Everyone knew he was incompetent, but he would have fared much better if he had kept his mouth shut. Instead, he took every opportunity to show everyone how completely incompetent he was by spouting nonsense when he could have simply sat back and listened.

The words "standard" and "regular" are not interchangeable when used in the context of the computing term "regular expression". It's certainly true that there are multiple standards for regular expressions, and most implementations don't fully conform to any standard. You can find lots of information about regular expressions. One of the better sites is Regular-Expressions.info. They have a syntax reference (see the site navigation links on the left), an extensive tutorial (see the site navigation links on the left), and a comparison of regular expression flavors (scroll down for a feature table).

Windows Search and Live Search are two different things. Windows Search is local, Live Search is for the web. Vista comes with Windows Search 3; Search 4 is a separate download. Search 4 doesn't use regular expressions, although it does support complex queries (much of the Microsoft documentation is nonsense). It does support DOS wildcards, and one can play semantic games as to whether that qualifies as a regular expression (they're far too primitive to qualify as what most people consider to be regular expressions). Windows Search doesn't do replacement. The command-line utility FindStr supports primitive regular expressions. By default, Windows Search doesn't index entire drives, it only indexes relevant items, which you can configure.

I tried this tool. User interface is not user-friendly and it seems that it is not possible to make just a full text search (without replace). Also it showed "access violation" error during editing a text field. Thumbs down.

I prefer MultiFind (http://www.midlinesoft.com/multifind), that was published for free on this site some time ago (it is Shareware).

Works on
Vista x32
Vista x64
XP x64
XP MCE 2005
NO IA support.
Doesn't work under Wine

Works to some extent. Like others said, it doesn't support "standard" expressions. But then, there's no such thing as "standard expressions". There's just common for particular group expressions.
Your search engine expressions are different than the ones used in wiki searches, are different from dic-search expressions.

This comes across as clunky. I'm not sure if it's the intended design, or a bug/flaw, but this doesn't seam to always do what you expect on exchanges.

Vista (Ultimate atleast) users can do basic search and replace tasks directly from Windows Search Live 4 if they have indexed their drive (one of the few reasons for doing such a complete index).

That said, I've been using the free donation supported NotePad++
http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm
for a LONG time now and find it to be, so far the best raw data editor
(for text, html, coding pages and scripts, xml, dictionary databases,
you name it; it does it) It also has hundreds of free and donationware plugins that extend its ability to rival many professional programs. The right click function on ++ makes it available for everything on your system. Give that this is unreliable in it's current form, I'll stick with ++ and WSL4 for now; they may not be great, but you can always expect consistent results.

Along with what AxCut said, with ++ just double click an expression and it will highlight EVERY occurrence. Then when you do the software based exchange you know exactly what lines need to be reverted/skipped.

I have something to say thats unrelated directly to todays offer. Vistas been out for about 26 months, SP-1 for a year & were supposed to get SP-2 anytime now.
Theres absolutely no more excuses for software vendors/designers not to have Vista compatible software. None, zero! If a companies to sorry or lazy to do what needs doing by now, I have no use for any of their products! They have to be poor apps to have lagged this far behind.
Now, I have a new gaming desktop with an x64 version of Vista so what the heck am I gonna do with software like this? I'll tell you. Nothing at all! I pass on rubbish like this. No pun intended towards GOTD at all. I understand they have to offer what they get.

THINGS LIKE THIS OFFER AREN'T WORTH WASTING MY TIME WITH.

Well, when Windows 7 comes out in full. Anyone who paid for Vista PREM or Ultimate will be getting it free. Then Software devlopers will be on the vista band wagon.

They need a "Thumb Up" and a "Thumbs Down" ICON to paste into the forms

I give this one a "Thumbs Down" becuase I could not use it on my computer. Nothing worked at all.

The program installed and registered fine on XP sp3. It does what it says and it does it good. Small memory print, I have 2 G so it doesn't even bother my CPU. I think its price is a wee too high, any good Perl programmer or emacs user who knows regular expressions would replace text much faster than using AKS Replacement.

The product's blurb states that 'This feature-rich utility will be useful for developers, web-masters, anyone who works with plain text documents'. This strength or 'feature-rich' of AKS Text Replacement is that it allows you to see the result of the text replacement before it is actually preformed. Usually people who don't do much text processing and makes a mistake on a text replacement has to undo it, fix it, and replace the text correctly. With the AKS's program you may same a bit of time by spotting the problem early and fix it.

Somebody who does a lot of complex and/or a lot of text replacements probably already have some efficient scheme set up. I had a job that required doing tons of C++ source code replacement and it sucked rocks.

IMHO, people who are comfortable with their text replacements won't need today's offering and asking $40 for it is too much .

First of all differenciate between filename-renamers and filetext-replacers.
This is a filetext-replacer.

There are 2 kinds:
1] the ones where you find and replace text in one single textfile and
2] the ones that can do so in many textfiles in one run (batchwise).
This is a batch filetext-replacer.

Ofcourse some hybrid kind off software exists whereyou can do all off the above.

Regular expressions are among the most powerfull options to find patterns in plain text, and yes I would have liked it very much indeed. And no this tool cannot handle reg.exp's.

In filerenamers and single-filetext-replacers the use of reg.exp's is very common.
The strange thing is that it is by far common (though they do exist)in batch-filetext-replacers. Therefore aks-text-replacer is not stange in its class not having reg.exp's support. It still would have been nice though.

Bottom line is however only the better apps. have reg.exp's support.
Having no regular help is also very sloppy, the GUI is to my taste not very clear, but it does it's job and it does it quick.

You can always choose between this one and the alternatives above (or the one given after me).
For me UltraEdit (with reg.exp. support) will still be the best, but that is a commercial app. ofcource.

I still think this GAotD can come in handy for those who have none of this yet and in need of using such.

Regular expressions are the unix/linux version of wildcards on steroids. With wildcards, you can recognize a search pattern without having to specify every letter, say ?arf*, which would recognize barf, arf, arfs, etc.

With regular expressions, you can set up much more complex recognition patterns. Why would you need it? If you decided to change one irregular verb through an entire document, you could set up a regular expression that would recognize the verb in any of its forms and replace it with the proper form of the new verb. Regular expressions require some learning to use and some regular use to be easily used, but once you have them, they become invaluable.

The option where a search-and-replace program lacks regular expressions or wildcards is to search, in the above example, on every possible form of the verb, one at a time.

So the lack of regular expressions makes a search-and-replace program provide a little less than "full control over search and replace process"

AKS worked well in my limited test, but I doubt the $40.00 price tag is justified, especially when this is neither a fully featured text editor nor a fully featured search and replace program, as it doesn't support regular expressions. Regular expressions are useful, for example, when editing web pages, so I would stick with freeware like Replace Text http://www.ecobyte.com/replacetext/ before I would pay for any program that works but doesn't quite work enough.

Yes, this is one of a number of text-only file search-and-replace utilities. It's true that one doesn't often need that capability these days, but when you do, it's nice to have a utility handy. This installs and runs on Vista, even if not technically compliant. If you have DEP enabled for everything, it requires a DEP exception.

The coding is a bit sloppy. Like a number of applications, it's apparently using some common routine which requests direct disk access when not required (as this is a security risk, you should block it if your security software will do so). Help doesn't work from within the program, but a very minimal Help file is available. Vista users can right-click the program in the Start menu and select "Open file location". Like many applications, some dialog boxes will open across monitors on dual-monitor systems. When you click on the Search and Replace entry fields, if you're not in the first column, which it doesn't indicate, it will pad with spaces up to the text cursor, so you must ensure that you're getting the strings which you expect.

Yes, lack of regular expression support is a major negative. For simple text search-and-replace, this has numerous options, and can prompt for individual match replacement. It keeps track of option sets used, even if you don't specifically save them, for future re-use.

The author needs to address the problems listed above. While I wouldn't pay anywhere near $40 for this, even with fixes, it may be worth picking up today, despite the flaws, for simple text search-and-replace with numerous options. However, one should be aware that many text editors will do much the same thing, and many also support regular expressions.

Alternatives with different feature sets include the open-source grepWin, currently version 1.3.2, which will only perform replace operations if regular expressions are used, and the freeware Replace Text (formerly BK ReplaceEm), currently version 2.2.

#4 PHP/HTML and other source code ARE plain text, only the output on the web page are not. Office applications are a different matter due to their formatting and operating code.

Downloaded and installed OK, but no help files and the web site is pure waffle with no syrup! I often use search/replace but I'm not sure I follow what this is trying to do.

#3 I might be just as upset about regular expressions if I had any idea why I would want them in this app.

It may be true that there has been no real positive comments in the first 4, but come on! I'm looking at -30 as I sit here, and not one positive.

I have to do a lot of text-replacing a lot of time and this tool comes in very handy.
After activating the way described in the readme-file a new file is created in the install-folder "reg_key.key".

If you like the software save this file and the setup.exe from GAotD.
This file is not used to keep the software registered, you can actually remove it (but why should you).
I suppose it is there to backup your serial number in case something is going wrong.
Activate.exe doesn't show the s/n but inserts it in the regsitry directly (people familiar with using regedt32.exe know).

If you like this software and you might ever lose it due to a crash, just run setup.exe (it has no timelimit as activate.exe does) and register through the menu / help / register ..
Apply the key contained in "reg_key.key".
In this way you have a giveaway for life.
