You can do most simple pdf file operations via free online services, but encrypting a pdf file is one that you should not do online, since you have to upload the unencrypted file and then you can't control where it ends up. That makes this simple utility potentially useful. But the same security concern means that you have to trust the program doing the encryption. Is Wowtron trustworth? Who knows? - they're one of those anonymous software developers with no identifying details in their "About Us". That's not uncommon, but it doesn't address the higher level of security concern with a program designed to encrypt sensitive documents on your computer.

Doug James, I wouldn't and don't even upload anything to cloud storage online. Why? When most users have sufficient jump drives and portable hard drives to do so. I use about 3 TB to store anything I need.

On opening a very attractive interface, it allows you to protect with various levels of security, and add a watermark of either text or an image, and to be able to view the properties of the file.

It worked perfectly on tests for permission to open the file and on opening the text watermark with the angle, opacity and colour selected was shown clearly.
It worked equally well when the watermark was an image.

I really love the interface, pleasing on the eye and easy to use and if I needed to password protect all watermark many, many PDF files on a regular basis I'd be happy to pay the asking price.

Sorry, thought the idea was to test the software but apparently the business model and where they lived is more important.
And so it is ta ta from Tata

Tata, & Bob,
And the winner is .......... Bob, 43 pluses ahead of Tata's negatives.

Tata gets credit for actually doing a test of the software.

olrowdy01,
Thanks for the comment, even though it is above the intellectual capacity of the button pressers to understand the idea behind the site.
Can see why we have lost so many of the regular contributors and will be happy to join them.
Ta ta.

The same company also provides a PDF restriction remover
http://wowtron.com/pdf-restriction-remover/index.html

Their blog (http://wowtron.com/blog/the-best-free-pdf-restrictions-remover-software-to-remove-print-copy-and-edit-security/) says
"The best free pdf restrictions remover software to remove print copy and edit security
Sometimes PDF files are protected with a password settled by the admin / owner to restrict any changes in the document such as copy, edit or print. In this case you will not be able to do any action you need except if you know the password. Of course this is a problem for you. Don’t get frustrated, there is a very simple and professional solution for you. All you have to do is to use WowTron PDF Restriction Remover.

The program will remove restrictions from Adobe PDF files and enable you to easily copy, edit & print text or images . It supports to remove all the PDF restrictions in batches."

Would be useful to know what this allows you to do with a PDF restricted with todays giveaway - is it worth it if the same company provides a way to defeat their own product.

Website has no company information at all.
No idea where they are, what laws they are subject to - if you want user trust, tell us about yourself

Bob,
Whoever protects from printing etc we should all know it is easy to bypass, however the opening protection is a totally different matter and very secure.
And so I would anticipate that their program that can bypass the printing and manipulation of the work as well as the many others available.

Not in the least interested in where the program comes from as GAOD has never offered dangerous programs in the past and so I feel secure in using it.

Maybe we should all stop bothering about where the programs come from and more about where our food comes from and how it is treated.

Tata,
Of course it's easy to bypass these things, still doesn't invalidate the question, a company offers you the ability to secure and everyone else the ability to remove this, interesting business model... you can offer an upgrade to enhance the encryption, then an upgrade to the restriction remover... you get the idea (I hope).

I didn't mention GAOD offerings being dangerous, users data is protected (and respected) differently in different parts of the world, this is more my concern if something wants to install on my systems.
In addition, there are some states/regimes/organisations that I would not like to deal with or help fund so I like to know where I'm buying from so I can make an informed decision, it's disappointing if some people are not interested.

Re food, I've been very concerned about that since before there were computers, you also should add concerns about the treatment of the labour force that produces it... which leads us back to my question on where today's company is again...
Oh, and don't forget your clothes, nice trainers - where are they made and by who and under what conditions.

If you're worried about food then consider worrying about the cosmetics industry

Shall we get back to the software now

Bob,
Your first paragraph suggest you need a better understanding of password protection in PDF files.

Tata,
No, you've misunderstood it, it is referring to the marketing methods of some companies to cross sell products/services and upgrades.
Nothing to do with the technical implementation

"Would be useful to know what this allows you to do with a PDF restricted with todays giveaway - is it worth it if the same company provides a way to defeat their own product."

"... it is referring to the marketing methods of some companies to cross sell products/services and upgrades"

See your point.
FWIW I think Wowtron just tries to use their expertise re: the PDF format, to come up with as many potentially useful products as possible. Their primary selling point I'd guess [like most 3rd party PDF software] is low cost compared to Adobe's software & services.

There are situations where people & companies need to lock up their IP &/or work, e.g. submitting designs for approval in a way that the potential client has to pay you to use one or more of them, or as DRM like with Kindle books. And I'd *think* that if your livelihood depended on it, you'd use Adobe, paying the higher cost as a cost of doing business.

But maybe not everyone thinks that way? And if they don't feel it's worth the extra money for better software with more security, perhaps protection that's easily defeated doesn't bother them either?
