I ran setup but did not have the key. When I got the key I tried to run setup again but I get the error 'The key cannot be decrypted'. I have not entered the key yet and it will not let me reinstall.

Tried all day to email support but only response was a failure notice on their email address.

WinSettings 8.1 is shown at
http://majorgeeks.com/WinSettings_d2646.html
with a date of 2006-12-13.

Is this a different version of 8.1?

WinSettings Pro 9.0 and WinSettings Pro 10.1 are also available, so this is not the latest version.

@ 50 - Giovanni

May I suggest you do some homework. I used WinSetting 8.1 over 2 years ago so I highly doubt it is new as of Jan 17. You might want to look here for a little proof

Downloaded file from GAOTD site, got password, loaded program, then got "Invalid Password" when running prg. So, downloaded trial version from FileStream's website, thinking that I could try to enter the password into that version (Also 8.1), but (trial version of) program would not run after installed, so could not even attempt to enter password.

Now, I'm done with this "program". Thanks GAOTD, but this just doesn't seem worth all the gyrations to get a password, then inability to get things to work as promised.

Guess I'll wait until a competitor offers a similar program via GAOTD that actually works, or use one of the many free programs recommended by other users.

Thanks.

I test quality freeware. This site is unique in that it offers for only 24 hours, paid software to be tested by anyone. Integrity in marketing is apparent when the designers give away their top of the line software for that 1 day of the year. This shows good faith and anyone noticing appreciates this and will inquire further into upgrades and other software they may design. “Heavy handed” marketing, info scavenging and software not up to date “should” throw red flags. I learned late in life that no matter how justified and logical my criticisms might be, since I put that out, that is exactly what I got back. There will always be those that criticize. A grain of salt for some comments here and everywhere. I will donate to excellent freeware to honor the Open Source sharing spirit. This is a philosophy that reflects true honor towards all of us as one community working together. If we all helped each other with our skills at the deepest level we would not have much need for what may soon be worthless pieces of green paper. My best practice has been:
1) Research the company, check for quality from various sources, do they have just a first name and a website?
2) See if there is “in your face” documentation for their free “and always will be” versions, is it 64 bit compatible or have they hidden this info 6 levels deep into their website?
3) Be wary of poor spelling, it may translate into buggy software code. Many overseas designers take their work seriously enough to ensure excellent production of both software and it's articulation. American designers should not dare write Japanese software code and websites for instance unless they really know what they are doing.
4) If you are satisfied with your research, always make a restore point before installation and use CCleaner to delete unwanted restore points so that your needed restore point does not get shaved off the bottom after so many are made. 5) Software that is in development can actually be very stable from folks with the creative spirit who will actively ask for feedback. You don't want to get labeled as a complainer and poor software will fall by the wayside automatically. Be creative and don't fall prey to being a “consumer”, be helpful!

I went through the install process. It would have been much easier had the publisher included the key in the readme file or provided an activate.exe. But I registered the software and everything seems fine on my XP machine. One positive is the program asked during the installation process if the user wants it to start with windows. A nice touch over programs that just start without asking the user. As always thank you to the GAOTD team for all you do for us. Thank you to the publisher, FileStream, for your offering.

I'm not sure what this prog does EXACTLY, which through wisdom gleaned from this site, tells me I don't need it. The name would suggest it is similar to one I just got a few days ago called ULTIMATE WINDOWS TWEAKER (don't remember where exactly, but it is FREE). Works flawlessly on WIN7 pro 64-bit. I'm not experienced enough to tell you all the settings and tweaks, but many seem like they should be part of Windows, but aren't. It has categories such as Personalization, Internet, Network, Performance, UAC, etc No miracle cure-alls though lol. I actually got it to turn-off the short-cut arrows on my desktop icons.

Completely useless. Once jumping through hoops to get an install key, I was able to get this installed. Once installed, I found that most of what it does is far inferior to other free tools like Ccleaner. Uninstalled after 5 minutes - good news is that Revo Uninstaller reports no lingering files or registry entries.

Dear users,

the download file has just been updated. No critical bugs were detected in the previous version - just a couple of typos were fixed.

This said it is up to you to re-install the program or not in case you have already completed the installation and activation. :)

Have a nice day!

Please STOP TALKING NONSENSE!!

On SOFTPEDIA the last updated version of this program (WinSettings 8.1, namely the same version of this GAOTD) is dated January 17th, 2012, 12:14 UTC.

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Secure-cleaning/WinSettings.shtml

And on CNET and other websites this software got an EXCELLENT rating by their official EDITORS whenever it has been reviewed!!!

Is that clear, dudes??

With your idiotic and misleading comments you are ruining this wonderful website, even though sometimes I have a fancy that such misleading comments are often written by biased faked bloggers (probably someone employed in a rival software house, who knows...LOL!!).

Hope to be wrong of course!!

This program is from 2004 with little tweaking to try to make it compatible with Win7. It should be free in the first instance - not suitable to be given here!

The registration process is more trouble than this app is worth. Go to web page, fill out form, send blank e-mail, receive password... Now you can register. Only to find out that I already have freeware with much of the same functionality. You can see a pretty good set of WinSettings screen shots at Softonic, if you want to check them out before downloading.

Link: Screenshots

That said, the Pro version has a lot more options and control, with the ability to schedule maintenance, etc. That might have been worthwhile.

Anytime I see an offering which I might consider, I check the Publisher's previous offerings and the Homepage for any product documentation. For those of you interested in more information try the product info page: http://www.filestream.com/winsettings/

If you look on the right-hand side, you will see hyperlinks to features, etc.

Their Pro version is 10 and not 8.1 but I could not find anything that compares the versions to each other.

This is a VERY old version of a program that has gotten some good reviews on cNet (The new version is 10.1) The old version probably explains why folks are having problems with it on Win7.

http://download.cnet.com/FileStream-WinSettings-Pro/3000-2094_4-10012247.html

Looking for a free (and up to date) alternative? Try Toolwiz Care here

http://download.cnet.com/Toolwiz-Care/3000-2086_4-75610754.html

Be sure to check out the Super Registry tool that's part of the program... it's a registry editor that does not depend upon the windows api and this means that it can find (and remove) all sorts of detrius left behind by programs BEYOND the standard registry cleaners. (Ever wonder why you can't reinstall trial versions? THAT'S the reason and this thing can find it). More importantly (this tool) is MANUAL; meaning you can control what it does.

Another free alternative is Win Mate, available here

http://download.cnet.com/WinMate/3000-18512_4-75332725.html#editorsreview

Among its unique tools is a Windows Update that offers to check and update Microsoft's windows patches; meaning you can disable the standard (and performance-robbing) background transfer and windows update services. It (apparently) is still a work in progress because it was buggy on my systems but it shows promise; as does the program.

BTW, if you haven't already discovered it, Comodo Program Manager is a GREAT uninstaller (also free) that *automatically* tracks installer actions and can remove ALL traces. It is FAR better than alternatives (such as Revo Pro) because it does it automatically AND it is very fast AND it is (mostly) very effective AND it allows backups for later reinstalls. Go here for more

Hi - Neat simple program for XP 32 and XP 64 (Can't tell you about W7 as I got rid of all W7 system on my computers.) I like the terminate services and lock concept. I have too many things that keep coming back. I did not experience any of the bad stuff others have written about. I loved the @2 comment as that is what I did. So simple! That was: Just send an empty e-mail to ppmm@filestream.com and the password for WinSettings will be sent to you instantly.”

People like you two are the reason I have a special email address for spammers only. Anytime I register for a giveaway, I supply this email addy. I check it once every couple of days, and there is usually something legit from Ocster or someone like them, but the vast majority of the inbox is filled with spam. Since I only ever supply this email address to free offers, I suppose there must be a few unscrupulous people out there sharing their customer info. I'll be you work for one of them.

This GAOTD is not bad at all and honestly its current very low GAOTD user rating is something that goes far beyond human understanding...LOL!

If you, GAOTD team, don't make some changes to your misleading USERS' RATING SYSTEM, I'm pretty sure that you'll pay a huge price for it in the future, because any serious developer will be no longer willing to release his best software here for free as "launching pad" to get noticed by the blogosphere.

In short, this GAOTD does the following things:

· Blocks annoying Pop-ups in their tracks with override hotkey

. Stops Spyware from Getting Started

· Sounds alert or status-bar indicator when pop-ups are blocked

· Cleans up users' online and offline tracks instantly with one click

· Schedules cleanup hourly, daily, weekly, on Startup or Shutdown

· Automatically maintains users'PC clean with removal of junk and trash

· Gets control of users' cookies with the WinSettings Cookie Control & Locks up Settings to improve security

· Repairs Windows file associations damaged by hijackers

· Captures, copy, save, e-mail, and print all or part of your screen

· Organizes cluttered icons in the System Tray and Desktop

· Gets control of users' Desktop, giving them the option to personalize it with their own style

Screenshots:

http://www.softpedia.com/progScreenshots/WinSettings-Screenshot-7107.html

So, dudes, taking into account its features mentioned above, do you really think that this GAOTD is worth only 18% THUMBS UP??

Come on...be serious!!

Anyway, to get rid your system of any kind of old clutter junk files like cache, cookies, internet history, index.dat files, logs, temporary files, and broken shortcuts, you may also use the following terrific FREEWARE:

* CLEANER TRACES ERASAER 1.0

To erase unnecessary Windows files and folders stored on your PC, look no further and download UNCLEANER:

And if your browser has been suffering some IMAGE HIJACK problems due to a virus, I recommend using this little GEM to solve this annoying issue once & for all:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Secure-cleaning/IHTool.shtml

Finally, to stop SPYWARE from getting started & automatically loaded at startup and set your mind at rest about this problem, besides this GAOTD I recommend the following 2 FREE awesome tools:

for #15 - Absolutely CORRECT!!! In my business, I too give away FREE info IF I can get your email address. I don't spam, but if I see something that may fit your needs, I'll send the info on it.If I sell something every now and then this way, it "pays" for the service that I have to "pay" for, but the customer is getting "free". Most automated emailings will have an "Unsubscribe" link anyway, so go ahead, get the FREE product, then UNSUBSCRIBE the first spam you get if you want to.
Why do you thing they're giving it to you for FREE anyway - 'cause they like you or think you're good looking....c'mon man!! They need a list of potential BUYERS, and who knows, they just MIGHT have something that you'd WANT to BUY, but you don't know they have it.

Include it and it works fine with providing you with the "password"

@15 loved your little story about bla bla bla but the reality of this is that the developer should not be asking for any personal info considering that it is free and the idea is to give away to try and if you like it you might even buy it or suggest it to someone else to purchase!! but if you really want this peace of ____ware you do have the option of leaving them with a false identification no one says you have to use your name just a name thats all and these day it is best to have an alias for internet use that just cant be trusted .
just saying

I haven't installed it yet, [some research needed done first] but the most you have to enter in that form is a first & last name plus an email address.

it doesn't have to be your name, and I'd lay money it doesn't need to be your real address.

spamgourmet and any temp email you can get 2 email incoming and send one outgoing from should do nicely.

I just tested it with a name from a book and an off-the-wall addy and it worked just fine.

There appears to be no link to the game giveaway site today. We have a new game today called Be a King 2. We originally got the first in the series back in November 2009. The sequel is excellent. A multi genre game that includes elements of Strategy, Time Management and Tower Defense. you can find it via the following link:

http://game.giveawayoftheday.com/

There will also be a decent game tomorrow.

This is a unique all-in-one that sits in your system tray. Right-clicking enables you to quickly and easily change wallpaper, start music, clean your tracks, screen capture (including screen capture and email the result), and activate your screen saver.

Going into the winsetting control center you can also delete files securely, delete files to recycle bin, and delete files agressively that are running. You can play with icons. There are some options to play with registry controls too though I found that hitting the 'special folder' crashed winsettings.

There is nothing original about the component parts of this program, but the amalgamation, there is some convenience. It is probably worth downloading though registering is a hassle. In the next iteration of winsettings I would like more preconfiguration options. For example it would be nice to be able to preconfigure how loud the music will play. I would like to be able to preconfigure which popup options appear on the right click submenues.

As a TuneUp Utility it has nothing to offer. Just a collection of ordinary tools / tricks / registry settings that can easily be googled or performed by other, free, tools.

Free or not free, it has nothing to offer. Good scheduling options, but no registry cleanup. Only install when you are bored and curious, otherwise, move on - you won't miss this.

Sorry ;p

I must be sounding silly, but I fail to understand the utility of this program...

What did you smoke this morning before posting your comment?

I'm surprised at the number of people railing about being asked for their name and email address in order to receive this software. The developer is simply using the standard model that's been used by internet marketers for nearly a decade - to acquire a database of "likely buyers" (prospective customers) of their products. What the developers don't fully understand is that the effectiveness of email marketing is in serious decline - mostly because of abuse (which is most likely the reason why people are complaining about giving up their name and contact info.) Between over-sensitive spam filters and people who are trigger-happy with their delete buttons, you simply can't count on email to be a reliable means of communications anymore.

If you have concerns about what will be done with your contact info, you can always choose to decline today's offering and go back to your perfect little world where everything seems to just magically appear out of the sky and installs itself seamlessly on your computer for free - and of course you never have to sacrifice anything in order to get it. When it doesn't flop on its side like a crippled minnow (even when the developer never claimed it would), you're likely to be the first one to posting a comment complaining about the fact that it doesn't, and how it's not worth the price that you DIDN'T pay for it! It's because of actions of people like THESE that the government is now trying to clamp down on copyright violators, but IMHO they're trying to lock the barn door long after the horse is already over the horizon!

(Note to "Freeloaders:" While you're sitting in your magical little world waiting for the world to bow to your every whim and demand, just watch out for the cute little white bunnies sitting on the toadstools - they have FANGS to go along with those beautiful blood-red eyes! Besides - it's time to go upstairs to dinner. I just heard your Mom say it's ready!)
