Missed it, had to rush out yesterday (it's really odd as I must check here 360 days a year). Still would like to chime in with a recommendation and like as I do use the previous version (6.1.7) and feel it's a great program to have and a big improvement on the standard Windows functionality if you use USB drives a fair bit.

I do have one minor unlocking issue with 6.1.7, but as it's so old now I can't see it would be fair to mention it, so I won't.

Hi Igor, was that link put up just for 1 download? The form is disabled, cannot fill in my name/info to get the license. Thanks.

Great little tool. Been using it for a decade as well. Never thought to upgrade it, as it's been working fine. Curious to see what is new. I will check out the change logs.

I get a lot of error messages on my W10 laptop when I want to unplug an external and have gone thru the 'safely remove' part of the process. The message says that I can't because the external is running 'something' even though I know it isn't. Will this solve that problem so I don't have to turn off my 'puter b4 I unplug the external?

External HDD can be hot unplugged. That is why they won't show in the Windows 10 unplug icon. The Windows 10 unplug routine works perfectly well and is more than enough. But some people will always need belt AND suspenders...

Reply   |   Comment by AndY  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-2)

AndY, Not all external drives can be hot unplugged and same goes for USB sticks. Also not all folks are on Windows 10 and I myself have found the unplug routine does not always work well. That and please don't tell me you have never accidently yanked out a USB stick, and regretted it after.
It isn't about "some people will always need belt AND suspenders..."It's about thinking ahead incase of a blunder..16Gb of data lost, on a USB stick, stings.

I used a previous version of this to "Fix drive letter" for an issue that I was having with some of my Seagate external drives not showing up in Explorer. As soon as I set the drive letter with USB Safely Remove -> Device Properties -> Drive Properties tab, the external drives showed up in Explorer and now always do. So, this was useful for that as well as its main use.

I got USB Safely Remove from GOTD years ago and bought it almost immediately. I've been running it on all my computers since then. I really just came by to give Igor an endorsement because his app is great and when you buy it he gives you lifetime upgrades. Great product, great guy. If you swap USB stuff a lot...just get it.

Even Windows 7 has a built in secure removal of hardware, so what is the use of this?

Reply   |   Comment by Bjorn  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+13)

Bjorn, that doesn't always work and often blocks the drive from being removed safely ("because it is in use"... while it's not).

Reply   |   Comment by Oscar  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Bjorn,
It has lots of advantages over the native Windows safe removal and external drive management, see full list here: https://safelyremove.com/usbsafelyremove-vs-windows.htm

P.S. Windows has safely remove hardware since Win 2000, not Win 7.

"Even Windows 7 has a built in secure removal of hardware, so what is the use of this?"

And if that Always works for you, you're right, you probably don't absolutely need USB Safely Remove. The rest of us however, aren't so lucky... at least once a day Windows will show me a message that the drive is still being used [it isn't] and can't be disconnected. USB Safely Remove fixes that.

Reply   |   Comment by mike  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

Bjorn, windows constantly tells people they cannot safely remove the device because it is in use when it is NOT in use. If it's on a "recently used" list in a program they want you to close that program, but if working that is not always an option.

Worse yet, it wont tell you what program is using it and makes you guess by closing everything one at a time then trying again.

If you never experienced this, you are either lucky or just don't keep many programs open and move data from usb drives back and forth between computers.

Reply   |   Comment by David Jaynes  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Bjorn, This is what the Windows implementation should have been. I have been a long time user of it.

Reply   |   Comment by Alok  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Bjorn,

For me, some times Windows refuses to disconnect my usb hard drive. It claims the device is busy when clearly it is not. I am forced to reboot at times just to remove the drive. This program allows a forced removal.

Reply   |   Comment by dadams  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Bjorn, the native device removal feature is pretty limited. If a program is using the device, it simply fails. This program detects the programs that are using it and gives you the options to close them, terminate them, or force a removal.

Reply   |   Comment by Robbie  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Bjorn, In 90% Win safe remove can't remove device as it is used. This app handle these also and even show you what app is using the drive.
So once you see JYREOWYRETOWYET.EXE is blocking your drive you know you have Virus and Ransomware.

Reply   |   Comment by PL  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Bjorn, Because it can sometimes fail to eject a USB drive correctly especially when some unknown program is somehow preventing me from ejecting it. I have this problem with my Windows 7 at least 25% of the time and that OS is horrible at telling you what the problem is and it leaves you to decide what program it is to close so that you can eject the USB drive. Many people are aware of this particular windows problem and Microsoft has yet to address it.
This is why I use "USB Safely Remove" and I thank both Crystal Rich Ltd. and GOTD for offering this for free today. It never fails me when trying to eject one or both of the external hard drives I have hooked up to my computer from time-to-time.

Reply   |   Comment by Robert  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Bjorn, Only if you remember to use it. If you don't, Windows doesn't care and you can, and probably will, lose data.
This software is a safety net.

I have had the big brother for years now "xStorage Manager" it is a very nice and useful tool. I have changed my computer two times but this is one of the things I have moved with me. It is always there and it is easy to use. Recommended
you can easy connect and disconnect usb without the risk of any data loss. Besides, all my drive letters stay the same when I move usb to my other computers.

Fantastic software! I've been using this for years. I used to recommend it (and the more advanced version "Zentimo" from the same developer) to clients too (I run a small IT company)... until the developer refused to give me a download link for the Zentimo version THAT I HAD PURCHASED.

But anyway, USB Safely Remove is great - easy to use, does what it's supposed to, and doesn't use much system resources.

CheeseBag, thanks for nice words about our software! However it's strange to hear that we refused to give you the download link. Reply   |   Comment by DanW  –  2 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-4)

DanW, Only if you install it on a USB device, which is attached to your computer constantly. However some "third party developers" does make it portable, but my advice is not to use these versions. It's a tiny program, and the sensible option is to install it.

Downloaded and registered fine in my Win10 HP x64. Have used this tool for at least a decade. Reliable, simple, and clean. Though it may not be critical in Win10, I find it useful if/when I have been plugging in multiple USB devices and have lost track of what is where. Also, it helps identify when a USB memory device is still locked by a Windows program, giving me a chance for orderly shutdown of bufffers. Thanks, GOTD and SafelyRemove.

AnAceBuyer,

If Win10 says you cannot unplug your USB device, it will ask you if you want to continue. If you chose so, then it will shut down the process involved and let you proceed. I believe Win10 doesn't need that software.

Franky, I have often had WIN10 tell me I cannot unplug a device because it is still being used (nothing that I know of is using it) and it does not give me an option to close whatever it is that is using it. Hopefully this utility will eliminate that problem.
