Man, I still feel bad about my negative comment, and it wasn't even that negative compared to many of the others.

So here we have a vendor giving away their software (no doubt many hours of work) for free, and what do they get in return? People being mean and insulting. Constructive criticism is fine, but being mean isn't.

And over and above that, I've changed my view of the type of software in question. Now I'm starting to think that it is a pretty darn good idea to have all search engines (including amazon and youtube etc) collected like that. It's easy and quick access (not even having to start the browser first), and a nice way to get rid of some bookmarks (I have way to many of those) and getting some increased order.

I can think of a reason for a developer to offer their work here for free...for the free market research. Simple enough.
Be it good or bad they will get some feedback.

These products are not offered at the big stores because the developer does not yet know if it is worth investing.

In this case I'd bet the developer will not spend his/her Koruna trying to put it in the big stores.

For those whom like it; they got it for free.

My 2 cents worth.

#99, comments are always good and will give feedback to the developer who can then improve on their software, such as making a new uniuqe feature, better UI, lesser resources, etc. This project will probably never end as developers want free publicity and more ppl using their software.

I kind of regret my negative comment. I think the software has recieved more negative comments than it deserves. It's not for me, but I see no inherent wrong in a program that simplifies searching. After all, we do searches all the time. Maybe there are free alternatives, but since I haven't tried neither them nor this program, I can't really say that they are as good. Maybe they're not. I've often found free alternatives to be lacking in one way or the other.

Because the comment made above; I think by alen, could seriously put developers off allowing their software to be given away free; and maybe even mean the end of this fantastic project. Can hardly anyone see this?????

It still seems that I'm in a minority with respect to liking this program, just for its simplicity. I'd like to point out though that the number of negative comments, (which yes I agree are part of a good comments section) do not actually agree with the number of people who have actually given this software a thumbs up. Not quite 50% I know, so yeah the majority of people who have bothered to click on the thumbs up or down sign have indicated a poor choice of software for today. So I would have to say the comments section really does look like a biased opinion. Is it that we get more aggrevated when something isn't to our liking, so we are more willing to make a comment. I think it's a sad reflection on the overall mentality of human kind, and it's no wonder that there is so much conflict at this present time than there has been throughout history.

To comment #84 I find the comment you made rather out of taste for a site such as this. For your information I would have a life if some b**** hadn't run into the back of me while I was cycling to work and left me a cripple, with four broken vertebra and the prospect of staying on morphine for the rest of my shortened life. It would be great to be able to get another life that I was used to before this tragic accident. Instead of a very active father, my young children (6 & 8) have a father that can barely help them with their homework, let alone have a life. Thankfully I do have an amazingly supportive wife who has gone through a lot of trauma due to my life change.
I find this site oneof the best things to happen in the 20 months that I've been house bound. What gets me is I've still got a reasonably positive attitude towards life despite my earlier comment (which was supposed to be a poor attempt at sarcasm in responce to yet another supposedly clever person, who seems to take delight in slamming someone who actually has the guts to stand up in what appears to be a large majority (despite the stats saying otherwise) and say this program is useful. Maybe i wouldn'y pay $20 for it as yes there are free alternatiives, but I'm not paying $20. And despite a;; the negativity, someone has taken the time to develop a programme that has helpful features, which I happen to like in that particular format as it's actually less painful for me to use (considering every movement I make despite the morphine is pretty much like agony) This package uses less movement to operate than any browser I know.

Thanks for being "human beings", it just strengthens my opinion of how c*** a section of our global community really is.

I apologise to the GoTD team for not using this comments section as it should be, but I feel I should be given the opportunity to answer these ingrates that are even better at being "horrible" than I was till "anonymous" pointed out last week how "horrible" I was.... That's another issue that doesn't need to be returned to though; lol.

I just wish the comments section would more reflect the quick indicator (thumbs up or down) that is also part of this comments section.

Not much of a program, and an unecssary system hog. XP even has something basic built right into it:

1. Right click on your system tray
2. Go to TOOLBARS. Make sure the ADDRESS toolbar is selected.
3. If your system tray is locked, unlock it by going to: right-click the tray -> uncheck LOCK THE TASKBAR.
4. Drag the new toolbar a bit more.
5. Type in any address - web or local.

#86:
I would agree with you on most of the complainers when the s/w has had some redeemable value. Other s/w given away has had some use even though there are other alternative freeware.

However, this s/w is of NO use. You can do the same thing with virtually all current browers. You select which search engine you want to use and type in a search term (E.G. Firefox has this built in!) So why create something redundant and useless?

This is the ONLY one I'm complaining about.

Just cuz it's free doesn't give it a FREE pass from criticism.
If GOTD had nothing better to giveaway. they should've taken the day off and gone to the beach! No one in their right mind would pay a cent, much less 19.95 for this!

No one should ever pay any amount of money for this, ever! There are legal free alternatives, and it's a useless program anyway. As someone else said earlier, all browsers have search built in, and eliminating one extra click is not worth a download.
So, in a way, GOTD did us a service by correcting the horrible mistake that Creatonix made in charging money for this.

But really, it's just worthless.

This is a program that demonstrates - just because you can write a program to perform a task - doesn't make that a good program. If a program is to make possible a difficult task, or to simplify or streamline a task removing unnecessary steps - then Universal Searchlet is a complete failure. (I had to perform 2 additional steps to perform a simple google search over my normal technique)

Looking at their other offering "Memory Cleaner" - it seems this is a corner of the software market Creatonix want to dominate - writing pointless software. Such a shame.

This software takes advantage of people that don't realize that a search bar is already in modern browsers such as Firefox or Internet Explorer 7 at the top right hand corner. Remember, this software is $20 for anyone that doesn't download it today; totally not worth it.

I've been reading some of these comments, and I have to say it - *why* do so many people bash *free* giveaways like this? This website is providing a very valuable service by offering one paid/retail program, absolutely free, no strings attached, for 24 hours, every day. If you think you may find the free giveaway program of the day useful, go ahead and download it. If you don't think you can find a use for a giveaway program, you don't have to download it. Just come back tomorrow and see what else these nice people offer. Simplicity itself.

And please don't take it out on the people who run this website with stupid comments like "GOTD probably just has nothing else better to post" and "Shame on you, GOTD, and the makers of this ’should-be-freeware-of-the-day” program". An attitude like that, expressed by too many people, will doom the GOTD to cancellation and ruin a great service for the rest of us. If you don't like the stuff these nice people are offering you *for free*, you don't belong on this website. Go and be a troll somewhere else.

To the staff who run GOTD, you provide an excellent service, where people can access these programs for free. I'm sure the vast majority of visitors to your website each day are pleased that you take the time and effort each day to do this. I'm sorry that not everyone appreciates your service, but I'm sure most people here do, including myself. Keep up the good work, and thank you again. :)

Well they're not on another planet. If you didn't know (or couldn't look it up) then why include it in your comment?

$20 US = 431.50 Czech Koruna ...for what it is that's too much money for it in the Czech Republic too.

This program sounds promising.
As far as the pricing concern, the programmers are from
Brno, Czech Republic. Our $20 is like a different amount of money for them.
As far as I know. This program is professionally made and it's virus/worm/trojan/spyware free. And it's as good as the other free ones out there. Since it's free instead of $20, I rather just use this instead, rather than having Google Desktop, which has been giving me horrible issues.
It's free, download it and use it for the rest of your life for free, or don't download it and critize it.

I installed this SW, but it does not work. No matter which search I try, it opens a Windows Explorer window on the catalog where the SW was installed. I tried it on three different PCs. All with same result. They all run Windows 2000 SP4 and Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106. So nice that they don't offer tech support.

Where did I say you shouldn't criticize? I did say I don't use or need 90% of what's available here.
Okay, I'll say it. Today's software offer is a waste of time for most everyone. It's antiquated, and way over-priced, if someone were actually considering buying it.
BUT, that being said, it isn't necessary to denigrate GOTD and tear everything they are trying to do to pieces. I'd like to see GOTD be a success.
It's more the attitude that some people have that rubs me the wrong way.

Problem with Linux is that it dumbs your computer down. Meaning that you end up doing less than you could before. As I can't use my KWorld USB506RF (TV card), VTech USB7200 VoIP phone, RealFlight G2, MS Flight Simulator, etc. under Linux. Thus Linux turns my computer into a glorified PDA. What good is that? Even Linus Torvalds (the author of Linux) claims in his book, he runs Windows. ;)

Re: Dave's #27 post, there is nothing wrong with criticism. If somebody is undecided about whether or not they want to download this offer, those comments can be very helpful in assisting you to come to a decision. If they're sarcastic or ridiculing, that's one thing. But to say you shouldn't say anything bad about a product on a MESSAGE board crosses the line.

I've only downloaded a few programs in the last few months, and they've been worthwhile. And I'm grateful for the cons that were written in some of the posts, so I didn't have to waste my time in the first place.

Have to agree with some previous comments. Trying to sell a simple search bar in 2007 is more than ten years too late, and for $20?!? There's FAR too many completely free alternatives, freeware search bars, browser plug-ins, web sites with multiple search engines to set as a home page, etc., etc. 'Universal Searchlet' offers no advantages over those.

But I think it's more a reflection on the developer than GOTD. GOTD has to come up with a shareware-program-for-free every day, plus another for the game site. They've scored lots of hits, bound to be a few misses. No biggie, there's a new offering every day.

Re #18, Frank:

GOTD has only been around since late 2006, no doubt offerings will get better over time as they get more exposure. Honestly though, I expected shareware, not big commercial software like one would find in the retail stores you mentioned, Best Buy .. CompUSA ... Circuit City. Be realistic about what you can get gratis. Software companies big enough to have advertising budgets that afford their products shelf space at major retailers don't need to give away their software.

As others have said, I don't see the point in today's giveaway. Browsers and google desktop can do the same thing for FREE and you never have to worry about having to buy it later if your computer crashes.

If someone wants to buy this for $19.99 later on, hey I've got a bridge in brooklyn to sell ya, email me at youareareal@sucker.com!

P.S. don't tell me not to gripe cuz this is a freebie, there is NO point to giving something like this away when there are a lot of USEFUL and better FREE stuff out there! I will agree that other giveaways have been useful and easy to use, even with some freeware alternatives. But in this case, GOTD should've just skipped a day and not given anything!

Don't be idiots, I don't even have a use for it, and there are alternatives, but the point is, you can access special searches with a hotkey or a few clicks, sure you can use Firefox or an IE plug in, but it allows you to use something like search Google for ebooks when I press ctrl-alt-E, insert the ebook name and press enter. You may not use it, hell I won't, but you don't have to criticize without trying the program.
