Dear All,

Here we will explain some problems that were raised many times.

1. "Flash player activex player not installed on your system would you like to download and install it?"
No need to have IE on your computer. But the Flash Player Active X Control for IE needs to be installed. Please refer to the link below.
http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html
And download
Download the Windows Flash Player 11.4 ActiveX control content debugger (for IE) (EXE, 9.75MB)

2. Cannot capture video? FLV…
Sothink SWF Catcher is a flash saver which can only capture SWF files. Flash Video file that contains video resource cannot be captured. If you want to download flash video, you may refer to another product of Sothink, Sothink Web Video Downloader. It enables you to download various types of videos, flash video is included. For more information about this software, please refer to the link below.
http://www.sothinkmedia.com/web-video-downloader/

3. #24 by TK. The Old Sothink SWF Catcher and the New SWF Catcher.
The Old Sothink SWF Catcher is also the current Sothink Flash Downloader for IE. It is an add-on for Internet Explorer. You can get this IE add-on when you launch the New SWF Catcher installation pack and check “Flash downloader for browsers”.

However, the New SWF Catcher is a brand-new standalone application. The first release version of the new SWF Catcher is V2.0. It enables you to get Flash via three approaches: browser cache (IE/Chrome/Firefox/safari), local files (.air, .apk, .exe, .swc) and running process. Of course you can use the browser add-ons as well.

As for the installation problem of Flash Downloader for Chrome add-on, we will not discuss it any more since many kind users have offered the solution.

At last, if you have registration problem, please refer to the link below.
http://www.sothink.com/product/swfcatcher/giveaway-registration.htm
And feel free to contact support@sothink.com if you have further queries about the software.

Have a nice day!
Sothink Team

SWF Catcher Special, downloaded from Giveaway and installed on Dell GX520 with Win XP Pro/Sp3, updated with the latest Flash Player. Cannot run SWF, as it comes with the same info box "SWF Catcher detected an old version of Flash Player ActiveX control" - no matter what I do, it still comes with the same script. All I can do is just to remove it. Otherwise it might be a useful tool.

Re 21:

The program catches SWF, not video.

Re 26:

The captured SWF can be used in other webpage.

Re 25:

No difference in function. Maybe it's just a marketing campaign held by Sothink.

Re 30:

You can send email to support@sothink.com for help.

Re 31:

Are you successfully installed the activex?

Google Chrome - moved the CRX file to Chrome Extensions, but still doesn't seem to be working. Is there a way to 'activate' it. I don't see anything that indicates it is downloading. Guess I don't know what I am suppose to see to make it work.

I really appreciate everyone's input regarding my difficulty in getting the registration info, but trust me - when I clicked on the link to get the key I was redirected to a page that had the header "SoThink Registration Key Failed To Work?" (I did notice that a redirect took place during the page load, with Firefox asking if the redirect should be allowed - which I approved, resulting in the "Registration Failed" page being displayed.)

There was no page containing the registration info when I first tried last night just moments after the giveaway began - instead, I was redirected to the page indicated above.

Now, upon clicking the link, the page everyone has told me about now magically appears with the registration info! I'm confused, but I'm happy, because the software is now registered!

If my previous comment was perceived to be a negative commentary about SourceTec and SoThink, I apologize for that, for that was not my intention. I have been using some of their other products that were previously given away here and have no complaints whatsoever about them.

(Perhaps it's time to talk to my doctor about adjusting my medications - I've noticed that my 6-foot-tall invisible rabbit friend has stopped talking to me lately too! LOL!)

Seriously, though, I do wish there was a consistent registration process that doesn't involve the software "phoning home" or requiring the filling out of forms to subscribe to email lists (anybody else out there getting flooded with email pitches from Ashampoo?)- and I know I'm not the only one who holds this sentiment. Perhaps the most common complaint I've seen in comments over the many years I've been following GOTD are about the registration/activation process. I know it's difficult working with so many different vendors - each one having their own unique registration process - but standardization would be a definite plus if you can figure out how! (The .gcd wrapper is a good start!)

Running windows 7 64bit ultimate,

Unable to try or use this software due to KIS2012 blocking a "P2P Trojan like software" and deleting/cleaning everything.

Tried to install with KIS turned off. It installed but unable to use with FIrefox and IE9 as it caused any webpage opneded to constantly flash on and off rapidly.

Upon uninstall of software websites were ok.

Perhaps software developer could investigate this ?

There are lots of free FLV players and background video capture plugins, so $79 seems way out of line. DownloadHelper works great, and is free.

I know I'm a novice when it comes to online videos and how they're structured, but it seems that this program only saves the .SWF "container," not the video itself. I don't understand how that can help me, since I'm not a programmer or website developer. What I expected was for this program to save video files that I view on YouTube and such sites. I guess it doesn't do that though, so I see no point in keeping it.

Any advice?

@Giovanni:
NirSoft creates fabulous PORTABLE software tools that are FREE.
Your explanation was superb! I'd use a freebie anytime over the possibility of re-formatting a PC that contained a GIVEAWAY that you either have to wait for AGAIN, or pay for, ALTHOUGH there are some great giveaways here - just not this one.

GO WITH NIRSOFT. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/video_cache_view.html

Personally, I really do not like INSTALLATION software. PORTABLE IS THE WAY TO GO, then you will always have it!

SoThink' GOTD Gift is Usually a Freebie Given to Buyers of SWF Easy!
And SoThink Reinvented Software Piracy!

SoThink generally offers SWF Catcher as free bonus for buying their Flash editors SWF Quicker or SWF Easy.

SWF Catcher's usefulness is rather limited. It won't capture from all sites. And it usually won't capture all SWF elements on a web page. Also, unlike other SoThink software, I found SWF Catcher to be a rather temperamental program. Overall, I didn't like SWF Catcher and uninstalled my 'free' bonus.

Other software do a much better job than SWF Catcher...and often do it as a supplemental feature.

Download Studio is a torrent-style download manager that includes flash & swf capture as a supplemental feature. It works much better than SWF Catcher.

MetaProducts Inquiry Pro is an awesome Internet research system and 'bookmark' database. As an additional feature, it offers a highly effective means for stripping all flash content from virtually any web page. Perfect for pirates.

Speaking of Pirates, SoThink's extremely harsh licensing system redefined Software Piracy.

ONCE UPON A TIME, Software Piracy meant dishonest hackers swiping software from software developers. HOWEVER, when it comes to SoThink, a Software Pirate is defined as a software developer who steals back licenses from paying customers.

If you ever reinstall your OS or change computers, SoThink puts you through a horrible ordeal to reactivate your licenses (for their PAID software). Also, installation will not fully complete unless you have an active Internet connection. You have to activate the 'paid' software before it will fully function (even if you input a valid license)....and an Internet connection is needed to activate. So, don't try installing any SoThink 'paid' software if your PC is offline.

ASIDE from SoThink's License Piracy, their line of 'paid' software offers one of the best alternatives to Adobe's flash software.

@Giovanni:
The link you gave:
http://www.flash-swf-converter.com/swfdownloader/
links to a "paid" app.

Indeed, the SWF Downloader is Free, but it is included in a "have to buy" app. Read the fine print: "iWisoft Flash/SWF Downloader is already built-in with Flash/SWF Converter."

To get the free app, you have to buy the other one.
Pretty clever marketing tool! But I won't take the bite ;-)

Downloaded and installed OK and seemed to activate OK.
Complained it wanted a newer version of ActiveX to run SWF Decompiler correctly. SWF Catcher refused to run without it so I accepted. It went to a (sothink) page to DL the control.

However, the page instruct one to open the page in IE and install the ActiveX into IE. No Way! I have absolutely no use for, and do not run, the sorry virus magnet excuse for a browser put out by MS. the requirements page does not list IE nor activeX controls as requirements.

Even if the page had, supposedly the ActiveX is only required for decompiling, not downloading. It is a poor design that breaks the entire app when only a small unused part fails.

Here we go again with email registration issues!

I followed the registration instructions precisely, going to the URL contained in the readme file, entering my email address (a "throwaway" address I have reserved especially for use for this kind of purpose), and submitted it. I then checked my inbox, opened the confirmation request email from Sourcetec and clicked on the confirmation link it contained - and then waited...

... and waited...

... and waited...

All these lame softwares that have one thing to do, grab .swf file extensioned files, flash is lame, go create Your own flash content why grab the whole net of it and piddle around with all they oh lovely anims, pics, flash animated crud... Its merly embeded vector style graphics framework, that look good even when scaled, such is Xara creation software is based on vector style smooth scaled line art and texturing is grand as well. anyway, what I am getting at is i know of a few little addons that will download ANY Filetype the net offers, downthemall! for ff v14+ and above will batch download whole gizillions of flash content, videos, various pic formats, rar bin avi vob etc etc, You define the filters... So with that said, todays is a one hit wonder with no bang for the buck, Later on, i will check back in a few days as its mundane to check this site everyday for piddly softwares, I would much rather search engine and direct download what I am seeking out anyway, just remember, folks create softwares and its alot of mundane tedious tasking to do so, so kudos for trying at least. Bye Ya...

Review

Sothink SWF Catcher is a Special Edition for GOTD users.
Capturing Flash from websites is straight forward and painless.
Sothink SWF Catcher Special will capture only Flash, that means if you want to capture a youtube video, you will get the youtube Flash Player but not the video.

Sothink SWF Catcher is useful for self-contained Flash animations on the web and there are plenty of them (advertisements, cartoons, Flash Games). With Flash Games it is important to understand that not all Flash Games can be captured with Sothink SWF Catcher, because of loading certain Flash Games from external servers at runtime only.

Still, there do exist a vast number of Flash developers to this day, Flash seems to get the “long service OLDIE BATCH”. However, for web development this may be true, desktop development with Flash will continue for a long time. Especially desktop presentations, slideshows, and of cause also desktop Flash Games.

For over five years I am a SourceTec customer. Notably friendly, the developers have a strong commitment with its clients. The online forum is a valuable resource and friendly to newcomers.

The price tag of Sothink SWF Catcher is steep compared to Sothink SWF Quicker.
Overall, SourceTec delivers high quality software for many years.

on a 10 scale Sothink SWF Catcher deserves 9 out of 10

Installed and registered without problems on Win 7 64 bit.

It's a simple tool designed for just one thing and it does it fairly well. Nice and clean interface as well. Sadly, no support for Opera. VideoCacheView by Nir Sofer (see Giovanni's post) does support Opera but can only get Flash contents from cache, not capture it live or extract from other applications/games.

It's overpriced imho, that's the only negative I can find. But still, nice program, a keeper. Thumbs up, SOthink and GOTD, and thanks.

This tool could be useful to view Flash content without having to download any Flash player in your machine. Not really, it will pull Flash files from cache or streaming in your browser. Either way, you need the Flash Player plug-in before it works. Well, you could get lucky with some games I guess, but video, no way.

hmmm must be a brand-new program because couldn't find any reliable review of it on the NET. I've just tried a couple of tests and looks like it does what it claims.

This tool could be useful to view Flash content without having to download any Flash player in your machine; it can also be used to compile a Flash library.

However I believe that FLASH technology is becoming less relevant day by day, especially in the MOBILE sector, due to the recent development and evolution of HTML 5 web technology, which now includes audio and video elements as well.

In addition to that, Flash technology turned out to be very weak against hacking attacks in several occasion in the past.

Here is a superb note on FLASH from (late lamented) Steve Jobs, where he explained why Apple decided NOT to let iPads support Flash anymore:

http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/

For these reasons, I think that a FREE (& PORTABLE) tool like "VideoCacheView" by Nir Sofer may be much more useful for the masses (it can even identify SWF and image files in the cache folder of your Internet Browser):

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/video_cache_view.html

What do you make of it, dudes?

Anyway, IE, FIREFOX and SAFARI can also use (for FREE of course) Sothink SWF Catcher ADDON to capture flash content:

http://www.sothink.com/product/swfcatcher/ie/
http://www.sothink.com/product/swfcatcher/firefox/
http://www.sothink.com/product/swfcatcher/safari/index.php

Another nice FREEWARE alternative to download SWF animations from any webpage (Flash games, Flash cards and Flash presentations) and then save them as SWF or as VIDEO CLIPS on your local disk, is also this:

http://www.flash-swf-converter.com/swfdownloader/

Enjoy!!

Ciao
Giovanni
