This screensaver is good. It's informative, etc. However, everytime I move my mouse (I don't click) to get back to my normal screen, it closes whatever is open. It's so annoying! Just now it opened up my shutdown menu. I had to cancel that.

I may uninstall it just for this reason.

Looking for a little help here, if at all possible.

I downloaded and installed the screensaver while it was still being offered for free by GOTD. However, in my haste to check it out I failed to thoroughly read the instructions and am stuck with the trial version. Since I've deleted the original download file I can't (not sure if it would work anyway) go back and try to do it the proper way to unlock the full version.

I'm thoroughly impressed with this screensaver and am looking for help, if it can be done, on regaining the download file that was offered by GOTD in hopes that I can turn back time and unlock this current trial version to the full nelly. Can anyone help me out with this? If so, please let me know, and thank you in advance!

After reading some of the posts here I downloaded this screensaver. The graphics are indeed stunning, especially if you have a "decent" computer. I run an AMD 64 bit processor (3200 series, 2.01GHz with 1 GB of RAM) and use an nvidia 7600 GT OC, which by itself has 256MB of GDDR3.

Installation took all of 3 minutes, and I did not notice any "hogging" of my system. I was interested in the program simply as an educational tool for my kids. I have no intention of actually using it as a screensaver. So, after the install, I removed it from my start-up menu. (Those of you who are having problems trying to run this program might want to look at just what launches in their start-up menu. Although you could run "msconfig," a simpler way to get a quick look at just what IS using up your CPU's resources is to hit Ctrl + Alt + Delete to open your "Task Manager" and look at the processes running in the background . . . Some of you will be amazed to find upwards of 40-50 processes running which you probably didn't even know about.)

Once you and close out the stuff you aren't using at the time(like MSN messenger, Yahoo messenger, etc., you should see a noticable difference in performance. (Not going to get into to the details of that process here, but it is pretty simple to do.)

Currently, my computer has 29 processes running in the background using between 10-12% of my resources, and IE is responsible for the bulk of that.

My computer is set to simply power down and go into standby after 20 minutes of "inactivity" which of course also powers down my 20" Sony HS95P flatscreen. Hit any key, and I am up and running again in a matter of seconds.

Thanks for another very good, free download; the quality of this screensaver is stunning, as are the other "limited" offerings available through its Manager. For me, the only negatives were all the icons put on my desktop and in my Start Menu, and these were easily dealt with.

I was concerned when my CyberHawk Pro announced that more was attempting to install than what I had clicked on, but I denied the access and figured it might probably have been more "little extras". No biggie.

I first read about the GOTD site in Gizmo Richards' TechSupportAlert Newsletter, and for all of you not familiar with it, you owe it to yourselves to check it out (www.techsupportalert.com). If you're at this site, you're obviously into FREE, so if you're not careful, you'll be downloading and installing like a mad person when you check out this link. The free software, though, is nothing compared to the information he shares in his editorials, and the helpful and cool tips he offers. Here's one of the latter: Want to go back to the top of this page without scrolling? Just press CTR + Home at the same time, but before you try it, you can get back here by pressing CTR + End.

I'm relatively new to computing, but with the help of people like Gizmo and those willing to share their products with us, I'm no longer a novice. The comments from most of you guys helps me a lot too, and it's appreciated. Keep your minds open; nothing good gets in, or out, otherwise...

This solar system screensaver is very beautiful. The background music is suttle but dramatizes the amazing panorama of the planets flying past you. There has been no difficulty with the power usage on my computer, the CPU being only 1.7GHz. Thank you very much for this lovely gift to all of us.

comments are now moderated.
If you post spam your post will be deleted.
If you flood, your post will be deleted.

And anyone trying to type 'first post' will be delayed such that they end up late, and make themselves look silly going "first post!" at #77. Since posts are now moderated, there could be several already in the queue, but to them it will look blank like there aren't any posts yet, and they're 1st. But they're not.

They really should have an IQ test that goes with this.... just so those who can't read a simple set of instructions......

Great screensaver..... my granddaughters are fascinated by it and have been watching it for hours.....

For those who are having trouble with it taking too long to exit, click the left mouse button...... disappears immediately.....

For those who are upset because there is a lag in starting...why? this is a screenSAVER.... starts when you leave the computer......whether it takes 2 seconds or 60, what is the difference?

For those who say it is out of scale, not accurate, etc.... hey, where is the one you have written? Put up or shut up.

Thanks again GOTD......

Ok, for anyone who says they received a DEMO. Either today's program or any program from this site, on any day. Here are special instructions for You:

STEP1: Point your head in the direction of your computer screen.
Note: Make sure at least 1 eye is open. Two is ok, but you need at least 1 eye open while head is pointed at screen. (REQUIRED.)

STEP2: Use your eye to spot the file with the letters: A C T I V A T E . E X E - Find Activate.exe and don't take your eye off of it so that it doesn't get away.

STEP3: Put your hand on the mouse and push it around so that the little pointy thing moving around on your screen (The triangular arrow-thing) TOUCHES the file "Activate.exe" Ok STOP! Stop pushing the mouse around and don't move the pointer! Keep it right there.

STEP4: DOUBLE-TAP the left clicker on your mouse while its pointer is on top of the file Activate.exe That means push twice (really really fast) while the pointy thing is atop the word "Activate" which came with your download from THIS site. Ok! That's it! You did it! If some other windows come up and tell you some miscellaneous interesting info, you can use your eye to read them if you want.

NOTE: IMPORTANT!!! When you come to this GiveAwayOfTheDay.com website, USE THE DOWNLOAD LINK ON *THIS* WEBSITE.

DO NOT CLICK THE LINK THAT SAYS "PUBLISHER:..." or "HOMEPAGE:...." those are there just to trick little kids and some Aliens. You want to click the link ON THIS SITE that says "Download (name of software here) now!" Not the link that takes you to the *author's homepage.* (Unless you want to read more info about the program, or if you really are an alien pod-person. Then it's ok. )

:-)

TAM: I think you went to the author's home website. Download from HERE then it's free. All is good, and Good Luck!! :)

"Site Seer" & "White Rabbit aka Stephen" are correct.

This program is good because it is reputable and can be gotten today for free. NEVER LISTEN TO SOMEONE WHO TELLS YOU TO GO DOWNLOAD A SCREENSAVER OFF THE INTERNET FOR FREE! That person possibly has little computer knowledge or experience. Because anyone who has experience in the IT field, especially IT security knows that the category of 'free screensavers' especially in a websearch, has been polluted and tainted with tons of nasty hijackers, trojan horses, and spyware infectors! DO NOT capriciously go do a search for free screensavers on the web and download it! Some may be reputable, but 8 out of 10 of them in this category will INFECT YOU. Especially files that end with the extension ".scr" are known high probability infectors. And this you may not even see because Microsoft saw fit to dumb down windows by hiding extensions by default so 1/2 the users, no... 90% of users... cannot even see the file extension. The extensions .pif .scr .bat and .wsh .com and .vbs are ESPECIALLY prone to being viruses!

So use EXTREME CAUTION when someone tells you "oh, you can just go download free screensavers off the internet" DO NOT TRUST THAT PERSON. It is likely they are trying to trick you, deceive you, or play a joke on you by getting you infected so that then they can later make fun of you and laugh at you and call you stupid for listening to them and infecting yourself. Be suspicious of anyone that tells you that you can just go download free screensavers off the net. More than half of them will get you infected.

This program TODAY is reputable and does not contain any malware. The astronomy solar system screensaver from today is OK. And THAT is another reason WHY someone might WANT to buy and pay for software like this, because paying $10 or $20 or whatever it is, to a Known reputable commercial product company is better than thinking you can go on the cheap and downloading some free thing that gets your pc all infected and then it wastes your time fixing it, or worse you need to pay a shop or a tech friend a lot more than the $10 or $20 to FIX your computer for you. And maybe teens that don't have a job, have All Day to spend on cleaning all kinds of toolbars and browser hijackers out of the system and registry, and their time is not as valuable or taking away $ from their business, but for those who make $50 or $200 per hour at a job, time is money, and spending $20 bucks is less of an issue than spending hours disinfecting the pc after it gets all messed up and losing $200 per hour while they are messing around with it trying to get it out of there. So for people whose time is money it would definitely be worth purchasing rather than risking an infected free piece of you-don't-know-what. Especially in this screensaver category.

Also, to those went to the troube of pointing out that 'screensavers' are no longer as necessary to perform said function of 'saving a screen' Thanks. But I think everyone in the world has KNOWN THAT FOR 10 YEARS. People get screensavers because they enjoy ART! I think everyone knows that 'screensavers' have evolved into more an item that is more for simple enjoyment. People like to customize their pc's, with screensavers and wallpaper desktop pictures, and are fine with that. People like a little variety in life, after the brain gets tired of focusing on spredsheets, accounting, numbers, and business all day, it's just pleasant to see a beautiful picture of the solar system, or mountains, or the earth, or flowers, or whatever people happen to be interested in, and gives them a break. Nobody's focused too hard on its actual 'screen saving' prowess and capabilities. lol. Relax. Don't get all wound up too tight. Enjoy the scenery! Plus this space-like one is nice because it expands your mind, it pulls back and gives you a good perspective on life, and the world, and points out that all of this stuff we get so wound up with in our lives is so SMALL and Insignificant compared to the vastness of the Solar System and the Galaxy.

And also this kind of thing is wonderful as WhiteRabbit aka Stephen pointed out, for education, and learning, and his kids who seem to enjoy learning, and are excited about the world, and all its wonders and mysteries. And it gives them a chance to explore, and increase their intelligence and breadth of knowledge about the Universe. And instills a profound thought about our little tiny insignificant speck of a place in it.

So to those out there who have a mind, not boxed in or encumbered and bogged down with mundane minutiae, ENJOY THE ART! and the VIEW!

"Hey, I can see my house in the screensaver on one of the planets!-The Advanced Specialist" :-)

Save your screen AND save your planet!

I'm not knocking today's screensaver (honest) but an alternative way to save your screen, to cut your energy bills AND to reduce the amount of the CO2 greenhouse gas emissions (as a result of your reduced PC power consumption) is to install Local Cooling from the
localcooling.com website (natch). Keep up the good work, GOTD!

Only read this after this FREE download of today ends:
*****************************************************
There is another great FREE Solar System Screensaver (and optionally the best Astronomical Windows application).
This screensaver was done as a sample from the author's own astronomical application (see Arthur C. Clarke's comment about the application here: http://www.distantsuns.com/ ). The screensaver should be downloaded from (a bit crowded site) ...
ftp://ftp.monkeybyte.com/WinOS/ds_ss_install.EXE (although you should first read something at the previously mentioned site). What does it have as the state of the art screensaver that it is? It also shows the solar system as a journey that starts launching from the Earth. But it should always be different... It does the journey as if it really was done at this very moment. That is, it knows where the planets actually are! So, before passing through Mars it nearly bumps with the Moon because it could be just in it's way at that moment... You are able to see Saturn and its satelites at their actual possitions. As it is a screensaver, I don't know if it is possible to speed up the journey or change the way your starship goes, but the time that you spend in the journey is proportional to the real distance between every planet. The images are amazing also. So, don't miss this screensaver if you are able to have access to the crowded ftp site... Or at least, download the free application and do the journey by hand...
Good luck! Again.

Opteron 170, 2GB of RAM, X1900XTX. No issues with load/unload times but when I preview the screen saver it 'jitters' like a video dropping frames. Given my system specs that's pretty much unacceptable. Uninstalled same as the last 2 GOTD downloads.

@84: GotD gives us the full version, not a trial. You just have to follow the instructions.

I also have no issues running this. It starts up immediately, and quits right away when I press any keys. (3.2ghz, 7900GT)

Yes, it's only on one screen with multiple monitors, but so are most screensavers.

Thanks GOTD!

This is a great screen saver. I read somewhere in the comments that screen savers are useless, well, they are not.

First, obviously, there is the security issue. Everybody understands that you can't leave your desktop on and unlocked and complain if somebody went to it and erased your stuff. I mean, nobody walks away from their home and leave the door unlocked right? So you set your screen saver and make sure that when it stops it asks for a password before you can continue working.

The less obvious, but most useful feature of screen savers is that they make sure that you don't over burn pixels on your screen, being TFT, CRT, Plasma or anything else. Any screen will develop pixel overexposure if a fixed image is kept on it long enough. Tv's have the same problem, that's why Xbox recommends turning the console off when you are not playing, so that the XBOX logo does not get burned in your tv screen.

For the naysayers, bugger off! We don't need negative remarks that have no useful information. Like people saying Another screensaver? or No dvd burner? Get real people. This is not Wall-Mart with coupons. These are real developers that haven't made it to the big leagues and are willing to give away their precious and costly software free of charge for one day in order to get some free publicity.

GOTD caters to them and to us, so I can't see anybody complaining about this service without a good reason. Why people with ancient hardware come here and complain about it running slow? Do other modern software run smootly on their computers? I mean, developers create programs assuming that users have an average modern machine. If you don't, then you should go back and either get a better machine or find older screensavers that were made when your hardware was average.

The people with modern HW that say that it is a resource hog don't seem to understand that the screen saver is meant to run only when the computer is doing nothing at all. Who cares if it takes all the resources? If you are actually running some program in the background, then this screen saver is not for you. Select another, less resource expensive, one with their superb screen saver manager or better yet go to Start>Log off and select 'switch users' because, your computer is password protected, right?

Thank you Astrogemini for the beautiful and informative screen saver. They are rare and far between, and thank you GOTD for letting us poor people with fixed incomes take a peek at what we could get if we actually had money.

Peace.

lol comment #35 2Sheds, My son watched the whole scene through several times then selected a few good astronomy books out of the study to read about the planets and astronomy in general. It's great how something such as this can inspire a child to learn. Thank you very much for this GotD team and Astro Gemini.

Re: comment #14, by TNT, you should be able to adjust your monitor settings so that you can see the planets as they should look. I wont condescend to explain further as i'm sure you know how. :)

It's nice to see so many good comments for such a giveaway as this. As for Kates comment #44 if there are millions of screensavers for free out there give us some hints at least as I would be very interested in finding them. Most are just poor imitations of the Astro gemini products. And as site seer so aptly points out many hold payment in different forms. (thanks again site seer for your interesting posts, I'm very familiar with some of those mentioned by you such as "Search Assistant") Nothing so beautiful would be given away for free. I've tried finding screensavers for free on the internet for a long time and do have a small selection of okay ones, but they come nowhere near the beauty of this one from Astro Gemini screensavers, who offer many more such as the sea storm and planet earth screensavers. I'm really impressed that (in my opinion' they have given away the best of their savers. I will certainly be purchasing a few of them once i lose these to the inevitable format or upgrade. Anyway, no disrespect meant to you Kate, but please back up your claim :) with some links.

#44 Kate, yes many free screensavers out there but as Matt and others said they have spyware and adware. Those screensavers add toolbars to your web browsers, change your browser's homepage, install adware and spyware apps they add to your computer's startup group and make changes to existing registry entries. All this without telling you or asking your permission on install.

Their extra bundled programs have innocent sounding names like "SearchAssistant", "CoolWWWSearch", "ShopAtHome", and even "SpywareSheriff" which sounds like anything but what it is in reality. If you have downloaded and installed any of those "free" 3D screensavers suggest you get a good antispyware program to clean the crap off your computer. Just an FYI.

its great its free and iam astonished that texts say otherwise but thats their opinions... 1) FREE 2) NICE 3) Yes you need a decent and speedy pc for it... duh... 4) If you dont like it then uninstall it and thats that 5) i will keep it installed because its spyware free and it also is superb to watch and FYI i dont keep "ANY" screen saver going on my pc becuase every pc io have had and i use a screen saver with i awake goto pc and its locked up the screen saver bugs... always so i just use the BLANKER part of the screen saver and have no problems whatsoever since 2003 doing this, I like gemini's screen savers they are very nice and 0% spyware adds to my attraction for them. so anyway i view them occasionally but never ever keep them active ever, else i regret it with a system LOCKUP everytime...

BTW FYI JSYK... so it's not just IMHO at all...

N~JOY!~CHEERZ~

First post! I've been checking this website out for weeks now trying to find something that I really need and today I hit the "save" button.

Normally I don't sit around looking at my screensaver, nor do I pay for them either, but this one is pretty darn nice. My relatively new computer has no problem whatsoever with the software (XP Pro, E6600, 2GB ram, 7950GT). The graphics are excellent and the music works well. And I don't see any ads so I'm not sure about that criticism. This is definitely a quality product and I am probably going to look around for other works by this company if I can find them at a good price. :)

One last comment since this is my first time here. GOTD is fantastic. I have no idea how they pull everything off. No one has complained about spyware or suddenly being spammed to death. The advertising from the donors is low keyed and informative instead of the all too typical in your face approach seen on major search/home sites like Yahoo and MSN. Whether or not I can use a particular program is secondary to the fact that a huge variety of mostly quality content is being offered ... for free! What a smart gesture on the part of the software companies to seed the ground for future paying customers. Hats off to everyone involved in this.
