I couldn't get it to install. It refused to connect to the web, gave me a runtime error 19:411. It does look like a handy program though.

Didn't happen uninstalled....Wasted time again from SoftOrbits.

Works fine on win10, I have both 1.4 and the new 1.6 versions side by side, both seem to work the same. This prog is a masking program with some degree of logic for what to mask. It is not, however, a real masking program. The "jaggies" still occur if masking something.

A real help would be a user adjustment for the mask edge, so it can be finessed into not looking like a cutout.

This does not replace the need for a real masking program. It does what it says and if limited to small item removals seems to work fine.

Ed, obviously, it does NOT do what it says, if you tell us that this masking program does not replace a _real_ masking program!

Everything I ever installed from this company from GAOTD turned into trial version after few months and my windows registry is full of Orbits entries, maybe few thousands so far and I can not remove them now.

Reply   |   Comment by mMaria  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+37)

mMaria, the problem with SoftOrbits software is that when you register one of their programs on any giveaway, any other SoftOrbits program you have will revert to a useless trial version.

If you have any program from SoftOrbits that you really like and want to keep, NEVER download and register another!

I have written to their technical support department many times to complain about this issue and I have yet to receive the courtesy of a reply.

Obviously, this happens by design. That is why I avoid SoftOrbits like the plague!

Rare case of truely unfinished product. Examples:
- Clicking "delete" clears the picture from the program - but also from the DISK!
- Green and red markers do not keep their color when moved over different parts of picture
- Poor results; may work if picture is painted fully with red/green markers - didn't test
Uninstalled quickly...

darres,
The Delete function is there to remove images from the folder and this is stated in the help file.

The markers react with the background colour, hence their apparent change of colour, this in no way effects the selection process.

They give you minus because they want to get info from you, not give info to you. But this should not deter you from asking reasonable questions. After all, what interests you is getting an answer, not getting votes. And you did get some reply.

I might add that whether you get better results by using a magic wand or by selecting areas depends not only on the tool but also on the type of image, so it’s not easy to compare. Furthermore, the particular examples given on the Home Page don’t look particularly difficult to me, as they seem to have strongly contrasting areas.

frank, have you considered the possibility that Simon has a different computer configuration than you? Or are you officially declaring that different people never experience different results with software (especially GOATD software) on different computer setups?

Anyway, super-helpful comment. But you already knew that.

Reply   |   Comment by Lance Brown  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+11)

frank, the original comment is at -5, while your comment is at -16. Mine is currently at +11. I'm feeling OK about my attitude. And I'm aware that developers are humans also. And I never said I find no fault with Simon's comment. My comment wasn't about his, it was about yours. And you might want to re-read your first comment, because it does not say what you claim it does, sarcastically or not. None of the three different times you recycled it on this page. Not the one that got -12 votes, nor the one that got -10 votes, nor the one here that got -16 votes.

BTW, aren't all the people you trolled with your sarcastic, unhelpful comments also humans? Do you think your comments made them feel good about themselves, or helped them somehow?

I'll take the answer off-air, because this is not a discussion I need to spend any more time on.

Installed correctly on Window 7 Pro system. ** Activation process could be a lot simpler. Is there really a need to supply an email address, name and date of birth when none of that appears in the product's "About" registration? That sounds like information harvesting to me. Unfortunately any tech savvy person would be entering bogus info so the quality of information you are receiving will be questionable. ** Allow the user the ability to control the installation of desktop icons and Start Menu items. **Program works very well. As stated earlier, the quality of your finished image is best determined by zooming in and taking your time.

Just two questions:
1. Where can I find the Photo Background Remover's version history to learn the differences between v. 1.4 (which I have) and v. 1.6 (today's GOTD)? Is it advisable to replace v. 1.4 with v. 1.6?
2. Should I uninstall my v. 1.4 before installing v. 1.6?
3. How is it possible that GOTD offers v. 1.6, but on the developer's web site we see v. 1.5?

Installed on Win 10 with no problems. Typical of all "background removers", it is very important to zoom in, and take your time to select the areas that you want to remove. I have used an earlier version, so it was easier to understand how it works. There is no "magic wand", but it does a fair job as advertised. For me, this is a keeper. Thank you GOTD and SoftOrbits.

The readme file says, 'To activate your free copy, click the "Get Activation key" button in the program window.' When I started the program I got a pop-up window saying that the program had been deactivated and the trial period was finished, but I could extend the trial by ten days or purchase a key. The link to extend the trial just took me to the same 'thank you for installing ...' page as after installation, with no facility for extending the trial. I wasn't going to purchase a key so did not follow that link. Closing the pop-up window also closed the program so I could not even search the menus for a 'get activation key' button. What I did not get at any point was a window with a button to click to get the activation key. So, unfortunately, I am unable to try this program. However, my experience of the SoftOrbits system so far does not make me feel I am missing anything. So, thank you for the offer but no thanks.

emperor, I have encountered similar problems. Sometimes things are easy, sometimes, like this they are a non starter. When I disable my antivirus I am able to install programs like this one. I rarely disable my antivirus to get a program from here.

GoldenEye, I have only ever had to disable my antivirus on rare occasions, and always with the GOTD wrapper in place. Today's offering came completely unwrapped and did install. It just seems that it did not do for me what it has done for so many. But thanks for taking the time to respond - appreciated.

Up and running in XP without any problems.

Tried it on a couple of photographs; instead of really carefully choosing the foreground and background just did a rough selection, but that was not successful.
It would appear that you need to really carefully select both background and foreground to get a decent finished product.

Not only can you clear the background you can make it a different colour, or you could put another photograph in the background.

Tried adding a photograph as a background and it worked very well.

I shall be keeping it.

Seb, Thanks for being a guinea pig and trying it out for us XP users still hanging on! Wasn't even going to bother trying it until I saw your post!

Oh, and just noticed that the program REQUIRES Internet access to install and "register", then makes you once again allow Internet access and register the next time you open the program (or at least it made me register again even though I saw the license in the Windows Registry "clear as day" after the installation)...

And I noticed the program attempts Internet access every time the program is opened, assuming to do an update check (so who knows how long this GOTD will stay activated?!)... Nothing in "Options" to disable the update check nor anything that I noticed in the Windows Registry or even in my user folder (sometimes they'll put an "ini" file that has settings in it that can be changed there as well as sometimes even the registration info there instead of the registry)...

The Home Page gives version 1.5 at 4.9 MB size as the latest.

This is version 1.6 at 9.03 MB size, apparently a later version of more size and features.

So, is this a better version than that sold on the Home Page? As this would be unlikely, what are the differences?

Reply   |   Comment by tomcat  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+21)

tomcat, Its not unusual for a certain version to be GiveawayOfTheDay specific, so 1.5 is the 'real build', then 1.5.1 is tweaked to be todays version, but just labelled as 1.6.

As for the larger filesize, that would be due to the 'bloat' of the giveawayoftheday file protection system. The underlying program would be the same.

1) A lot of messing just to get the key.
2) Then wants to install to a different directory from the previous version (1.3).
3) Then a message keeps bouncing on the screen that the license key is not registering ..... after saying OK to that message half a dozen times and a reboot, the program says registered.
4) On checking for an update the program says one is available ver. 1.5 which is surprising as this is supposed to be version 1.6.

Not a very impressive start from a not very impressive company.

Reply   |   Comment by Nigel  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+40)

Nigel, unfortunately this company have a rather long string of registration issues here on GAOTD, especially un-registering other products.

Reply   |   Comment by Reminis  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+31)

Reminis,

Yes, I installed it on a second computer after trying to check that computer's version number. But on there I got the message that the license had expired and when I said "No" to updating it. The program closed. I don't know why I bother knowing this company's reputation.

Despite their assurances to the contrary, this action has to be built into their programs. Licenses don't just disappear.

ABMM,

"I hope that someone could compare is this better than Photoshop for removing difficult background ?"

Where P/Shop & [the more reasonably priced] PaintShop Pro & The GIMP differ is in their support for layers, which allow you do a whole lot more once you've made a selection or mask.

There is one plug-in that I've seen the pros recommend, Topaz Remask [that's the only plugin I've seen them recommend]. Beyond that it's a matter of using the tools & methods that you're most comfortable with, e.g. myself, I like to use the simple rectangle selection tool multiple times to get rid of most of the background 1st, but that's me.

Some apps let you color the mask area transparent red, and some people prefer that to the more usual marching ants. Some will let you paint on the mask directly, i.e. paint your selection. Several of the better editing apps have a tool that looks at the surrounding pixels -- you select the radius -- then finds the edge -- you select the tolerance -- as you either trace the selection outline or click several points along the edge. Many offer color selection, where you choose the colors [often by clicking on the image with a color picker] & the tolerance, which works similarly to the old magic wand tools but with more control. The problem with that, same as with using the magic wand, is that there can often be stray pixels selected or that remain unselected...

Several editing apps let you look at a mask [selection] as black & white -- not just the Ruby mask -- which can make it easier to get rid of those strays. If you can't do that it can help to go over the areas with a paint brush selection tool set to a larger size, painting both the selected & unselected areas.

Most of the better editing apps have menu items to smooth the selection, & shrink or enlarge it -- you set the amounts. Usually you want to reduce the selection by a few pixels, then feather the selection back out. You'll most always want to feather the edge. Some apps also have defringing tools, that look for & get rid of stray pixels along the selection edge that don't match.

"nothing is better than photoshop, except for a pair of scissors."

That's your opinion, & that's perfectly fine -- just wanted to point out that it is an opinion & that there are millions of people who disagree. Adobe created a great production environment with P/Shop & Lightroom, tailored for photogs who don't have the time to spend doing more extensive editing on large batches of photos. Not everyone works that way [with large batches of photos to deliver], & many them prefer other software, e.g. DxO Labs.
