If you can't support the traffic and provide licenses in a timely way then you shouldn't make the offer, or you should just ship pre-activated. These aren't complaints, just facts.

Viktor, I do not think this was not a issue with Paragon. I think giveawayoftheday was sending a bad link.
When I got giveawayoftheday to email me the link to download the software I would get a 404 error and be redirected back to giveawayoftheday.com’s main page where I could start over and have them email me a link which resulted in the same sequence / redirect loop of the 404 page not found error being shown. So I think that this site had a broken link that was making users stuck in redirect.
I was not even able to download the software or the read me file to even start the activation process. If there is any way I can still redeem this offer please let me know.

In 45 years I've never seen such a convoluted installation regimen! After waiting hours for license code, never received, tried again using different email and finally got code. Started the 'installation process' only to get 'unable to complete installation' message. Tried deleting and clearing all files and re-downloading into different directory then got an "UMI" message, must uninstall all programs using blah blah blah". SORRY, any program which is so difficult to install makes one wonder what damage it might do down the road! Just isn't worth it. Used Paragon in the past but no more. I'll stick with Macrium Reflect for backup, never any problems, an Aomei for partition resizing.

What's happening here ? I left a comment asking for help a few hours ago, because installation stopped right after it started, throwing an error message with no details. My comment was normally published.

Now it seems to have disappeared, whereas many other comments were answered, presumably by the editor. What's going on ?

(Note : I registered the program succesfully.)

Had high hopes for this since I like Paragon products. Alas, it won't install on my Win10/64 Home system. Don't know what's in the way, might be Bitdefender, might be Kerish Doctor, something Dell has added, maybe a past installation of Paragon HDM 15. Ran the .exe file to install and after Windows asked it it was ok, nothing else happened after 5 minutes. I ran it again, and it almost froze the whole PC. Couldn't get to Task Manager to close it, couldn't shut down. After a hard power off and restart, and with no other programs running, I tried again. Let it run for over half an hour. Nothing. Task Manager said it was a "high power" user, and was consuming over 16% of my processing power. Tried to shut down with Task Manager and 10 minutes later it finally exited. Nothing was installed. Is this supposed to take and hour or two to install? Anyway, I gave up. I'm hoping my older HDM 15 still works. I also hope this works better for others. For me, I don't have time to suspend/uninstall programs at random to figure out what's causing the conflict.

I really wanted this software from a great company. I was installing and it was 98% complete when some other software on my computer (Kerish, I think) blocked the process and the installation bar STARTED BACKING UP! It totaling ended the installation. When I turned the other software off and tried to reinstall, I received the message:

The Universal Image Mounter (UIM) is installed and cannot be proceeded. Please uninstall the product with UIM before.

Fortunately, Paragon gives a link to their support area which gives the process to completely remove the UIM - it's NOT easy and is going to take me a while. Hopefully, I'll get it completed before the giveaway is over.

Sometimes the protection software we have running is too smart for it's own good!

I'm still using Backup 14 Free, which is great and still works on the latest version of Windows. I was given a free registration to 16 but the boot ISO **never** worked, even after I reported it and waited a year for them to fix it. They also removed the ability to skip files/folders during a full backup.

I just tried this one out and it also appears the skip files during backup is no longer available. That is the one feature that has made me stick with 14 for years. I can make a full system backup and yet skip over the huge Steam (and other games) which are easily downloadable if I have to restore the system. So basically I can backup my (almost full) 500 GB SSD to a 40 GB file that has Windows and all software except the huge games. I'll stick with 14 Free until it quits working.

Reply   |   Comment by gardenman  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

gardenman, such an option is available when you select 'Files/folders' as a backup source.

Reply   |   Comment by Viktor  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Viktor, The Files/Folders option will NOT do a full system backup (including Windows and software). So it's either backup Files/Folders *without Windows* or your whole system. But with 14 Free, you can make an actual system backup (Windows/Software) and yet skip huge games. Correct? That's why I'm sticking with 14 Free. It's so much better.

Alexa, it makes me sad to see that this is still happening. How can you still have your system set up that way? Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems to be the equivalent of a store saying if I can't send you my flyers you can't order from my shop, even if the reason is that you pass by the store every day and don't need the flyers or want them to go to waste.

It's lose-lose. If you think it's not, then be upfront to visitors. Your actual policy seems to be this: If you choose to unsubscribe from GOTD emails, GOTD will block your address entirely. You will not be able to receive email links to our software. Your requests for links will be discarded unseen.

I legit don't see any value in that policy but even worse than having it, is having it and not informing people clearly. Honestly, there is not a person in the world who thinks that clicking a link to unsubscribe from a company's promotional emails will result in their address, and future inquiries, being blocked by that company. If you don't believe me, I refer you to the thousands of reviews of many companies' practices right here on your very own site.

Paragon HDM 17 was released last year without much fanfare -- I only found out about it when I saw the upgrade options when I logged into my account at Paragon's site. All the previous copies of their backup app I had registered, paid & GOTD, showed an upgrade price to HDM 17 Advanced of around $25. I bought it. It's now at v. 17.13.1.

The new GUI is easier/simpler for the most casual user, but frankly I prefer the earlier v. 16 -- version 16 lets you choose what you want to do more easily, with things like Verifying a backup listed plainly, which works at any time, rather than only as part of the backup process, with verification somewhat hidden in the options. The bootable USB sticks you create with version 17 are more advanced than v. 16, and you have the option of creating USB sticks that run Linux or WinPE -- the Linux version has more features. You can also create ISOs instead of USB sticks that you can burn to disc, or use with something like rufus to have more options available creating a bootable USB stick.

Comparison-wise I think Paragon's main competition for backup & restore is Macrium Reflect. Paragon HDM will back up USB sticks & using my card reader, which Macrium Reflect Free will not. Paragon also lets me easily filter out folders I don't want included in the image backup without much if any speed penalty. But Paragon also tends to alter or modify the boot files -- you can turn that off in settings, but it's back on when you restart the app -- while Macrium Reflect Free leaves them alone. When restoring a backup using a bootable USB stick Macrium Reflect appears to be faster. They each have a few exclusive features, but they don't include anything that's commonly used by most people.

Paragon's main competition when it comes to partitioning I think comes from AOMEI. While the actual work done is comparable, I find AOMEI is more straightforward, & so easier to use.

A quick question. Can this software be installed to a USB drive and run from there? The reason I ask is that I have a couple of laptops that I'd like to use the "Disk WIper" feature on to clean their drives. Thank you to Paragon for this offering.

Secondly, I just want to say a big THANK YOU to the GOTD team for keeping the site going in these trying times we fnd ourselves in. I hope everyone there is well.

I haven't had the time to try todays offer, but usually Paragons HD managers offers the possibility to make a boot CD (or USB ?) where there maybe are tools. My advice is that you install the product and then try to make the disc or USB...
Look for Recovery Media Builder or something like that (at least that is the title in the File menu of my old Paragon HD Manager 15..

You should have received the "Readme.txt" file together with the product.

I'm copying you the text from this file:

Unzip the package you`ve downloaded and install the software by running Setup.exe.

To activate your free copy visit the page below. Press ' Get a key' and fill in the form. Registration information will be sent by email.

I asked for the serial and it said I should get it in a few minutes but nothing yet after more than an hour. It's not in my junk mail either.

It's a nice program, but i don't like the fact that it creates multiple files for one backup unlike some programs which only create one file

wynford, As a default .pvhd format is used which consists of the container itself it's a primary file of the hard disk info, the index file (.pfi) that keeps meta-information on the corresponding incremental image and a .pbe file with parts of corresponding disks archives if the archive was split.

OlgaPushkina, programs like Macrium Reflect (free) makes an image of all 4 partitions on my one hard drive in one file, that is what i'm going by.

Reply   |   Comment by wynford  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

wynford, I use Macrium Reflect (free) and it will let you backup single partitions into separate files. I have restored a full drive from these separate partitions when a hard drive failed, and when moving to a larger drive). I prefer separate partitions (and differential backups for each) because some change more often or are more critical than others, so I can do quick backups based on need. And... if one gets corrupted I won't lose *everything*.
I also have Paragon HDM 15, I've trusted Paragon with my disks for many years. I prefer Macrium for backups, though it's much more complex. Paragon for partition management.

what is the serial number to use?

Reply   |   Comment by Duncan  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-10)

Duncan, Please follow Readme instructions

Reply   |   Comment by Alexa  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Duncan, you need to check information in your Paragon account.
If you have created it in the past (GAOTD 25th version was available
last year - this one is an update) -you will get no information about the serial number or any clue by e-mail now. Strange, annoying. That old serial number available at paragon account is valid. If you have forgotten password to your account you can reset it.

Alexa, Yours is a really vague reply. I find the same issue as Duncan even after following the ReadMe instructions, which lead me to my Paragon account, which showed me nothing in the way of a serial number to use for this version. I will probably just stick to my older version which has served me well.

I have also been using paragon products for a long while - and was hoping the 'improve V16 backup ' suggestions would be incorporated in the new version.

So I start the install and get a message
"need to remove Universal Image Mounter"

That comes with a link on how-to,
"How To Uninstall Previous Version Of Universal Image Mounter"

which requires a uninstall of prior version, reboot (Recovery mode) manually delete folders from previously installed software - and registry edit then restart again - to get to the point where :-

Reboot your PC and see if the installation of current Paragon Software product will be successful

So - I have to effectively disable the current backup and recovery facility to install and check this version ...
And do 'system modification' actions to do that.
So - I will be disabling the previous version restore facility that would be used to recover from any problem with the manual uninstall.

jamies,

"So I start the install and get a message
"need to remove Universal Image Mounter""

Open Control Panel -> Device Mgr., find the UIM mounter, right click & uninstall, choosing remove files if available. The old version should work with the new UIM.

Mike,
Thanks for that.

Shame that the install process did not indicate that -
As in a message saying just uninstall the UIM and no need to do all the 'techie' stuff .
Then again - why it couldn't just post a message asking for confirmation it was OK for the install to do the replacement for the user.

The new version has a simplified UI with options imbedded in the commentary rather than as evidently selectable options.

A further comment - Yes Paragon do provide good software
BUT
I would clear the Trust [Paragon] tickbox if for no other reason than it is possible to spoof addresses - and I want to be sure that if not managing, I am at least monitoring the install and update processes.

Jean Janssens, unfortunately, yes, only X64. The full Version, not limited Edition, can work with X32

Jean Janssens,
Yes, it seems that only a X64 version is available, certainly for W10.
