If you're still into DVDs Leawo DVD Copy is what you want to copy the DVD to your hard disk. The video quality on retail DVDs is just good enough to watch, but purposely too low to survive re-encoding [ripping]. Sure, you can cut the file size to 1/2 or 1/4 the original, but it's not worth it -- just use VLC or VLC for Android to play the original mpg2, & let the player upscale the video as needed.
Optionally you can find and use the free software tools at videohelp.com to put the video in one mpg2 file, change the audio format, e.g., AC3 to AAC or MP3, and if you use subtitles, get & use SubtitleEdit to OCR the subs to an .srt file -- they'll look much nicer upscaled to 720 or 1080. You can also strip out the menus etc., remove audio &/or subtitle tracks you don't want/need, & cut out the credits to reduce the file size.
