I love this program. It has everything built in, file & graphics viewers, size management, file & directory compare, Sycning, start up manager, Notes, just to name a few from a long list of features.
My hats off to GAOTD for this one!!!!

sorry but a file manager that eats 14MB in private byte and 5MB in working set with almost all plugins disabled doesn't fit my needs. FreeCommander, which uses 8+1 MB in total and which does a lot of the useful frigate features, is more appropriate for a real daily use. Not as good as total commander but it's free and with a decent look.
While I like small free stuffs, I'll try A43.

Kittie Spit,
Thanks for the 'heads up'
I had given up using XYPlorerFree
The version you mentioned(Linked to) is an improvement.

#92~~
1. If my copy was installed incorrectly, its Frigate's setup file, not mine .
2. Configuration was default, nothing changed.
3. The help file shouldn't give any answer to why me file settings wouldn't change back to the usual (.doc to Microsoft Word) if the uninstallation doesn't do it automatically.

#95, Ken Martin, see my comment #92.
#91, John LeBlanc, the Help page for Sync Folders is broken, but I tried it and it did compare subfolders. To see how it works, use some test folders and play with the UI. I was able to correctly synchronize subfolders bi-directionally.

Appears to run fine under Vista 64 Ultimate, went to put it onto the laptop [XPpro] and Pest Patrol had a hissyfit... No info on the Pest Patrol website though. I also use Xplorer2 but will give this a go for a while.

RE: #81 (Harry K. Rotch). The last freeware version of XYPlorer,
XYplorerFree 5.55.0001 is still available here:
http://www.xyplorer.com/free.php
It's dated 29 NOV 2007; current shareware version is 6.80.0000 (4 JAN 2008).
Myself, I love the freeware version so much I purchased it & haven't regretted it a bit. Above web page indicates differences between the freeware & shareware versions of the program.
Tons of features in the freeware version alone; maybe more than many people will ever need.
Highly recommended!!
(Back in its' earliest freeware days it used to be called TrackerV3.)
Another cool freeware file manager I like is UltraExplorer. Version 1.5.0.3 just came out about a week ago. Has lots of features, incl tabbed folder displays. See here:

Me again, already uninstalled, was interferring with other programs, which I use all the time, namely PicaView, which is a must have.
Also way too big for what it does, 40MB AND 2198 Registry entries, no way.... not a keeper for me.Wasn't even able to get the WinAmp plugin to work etc. I think they need to go back to their drawing board once again, since someone mentioned this was the 2scd time this program was offered and still had the .dll problem plus I found another dll problem.
I much prefer A43 which is free and does a great job for a 825KB program. http://www.primitus.us/a43/

This is why I love GAOTD!! For those who are unsure if they should download this or not, trust me, DO IT! This is one of the few gems in the batch. It has enough features that it borders an insanity level. This program is stable, easy to use, and packed with options. My only very minor grip(which I hope is positive critism to imporve upon)I wish the GUI had a little more eye candy. The program is a little out dated being over 2 years old, yet it runs like a charm. Theres so much stuff in there thats it's duanting. GRAB IT NOW!
This is also the first time I could say that is product might be worth it's asking price, or close to it. $40.00 is still a little steep, but you get a lot of bang for every buck.
Thank GOATD and CoolUtils.com for a wonderful product!

As usual, a bunch of incorrect comments from people who haven't made the slightest effort to examine today's offering, read the help file, etc. And as usual, a bunch of thumbs-up to their useless comments from a bunch of people who are too lazy to check out the offering for themselves. While I don't care for add-on file managers, I do make an effort to see what they do.
#18, JonathansToolBar&Grill, instead of spending all your time endlessly promoting your blog, why don't you try actually reviewing the software? If you can't be bothered to actually try the UI elements, at least try reading the Help file.
#22, Louie, yours is either installed incorrectly, configured incorrectly, or you've selected the wrong options. Try reading the Help file (thoroughly).
#24, Danny, there may be a problem with your mouse driver, you might check for an update. The mouse scroll wheel works fine for me.

I compared this to Powerdesk 6 (costs around $40), which I use extensively.
Quickview very nice way to see contents of file in another pane. Powerdesk however will let you keep two panes for fileviews and add a viewer pane.
The helpfile is sparse.
Few Windows shortkeys (e.g., underline letters + Alt key as way to avoid mouse)
Synch folders a very important feature but has a deficiency that is a deal-killer for me. I could not a way to include subfolders in the comparison. This means that one might have to compare dozens or hundreds of folders.
I'm sticking with Powerdesk.

Downloaded from mirror 1, installed and had the NSCRT.DLL missing problem, solved this one, only to have the message program cannot start missing libsndfile.dll warning window coming up, went to same site for other missing dll, downloaded the libsndfile.dll installed both to C/Windows/System32 and C/ProgramFiles/Frigate3 just to make sure now program is up and running. Now off to their site to download the plug ins and see how it goes

#86: Thank you so much! I already had UAC turned off, and I added only Frigate3.exe to the DEP exclusion list. The program launches successfully now, without adding CT.exe to DEP exclusion list. Your advice is much appreciated. :)
Save | Cancel
I too had the missing dll's problem - no help or word of explanation included, and no other of the many programs I run on my pc seems to demand these dll's. If I had paid for the program I imagine I would have been quite miffed. It's not worth the time and energy to research the missing files, and so I deleted this program. Seems to me like a silly way to try to drum up business and future paying customers.

With respect to Damian's issue, it seems OK on this XP machine and on another Vista Ultimate machine. A simultaneous My Computer window does not disappear when Frigate is minimized/maximized.
I notice that it minimizes out of sight, not on the taskbar - certainly unusual behavior, although clicking on the tray icon brings it back.
For folks having trouble: I note that the instructions say to Activate first, then Install.

Folks with Vista. Try the following (This works with 32-bit vista, not sure about x64):
1- Install and activate the program as normal.
2- Go to System Properties and place the files CT.exe and FRIGATE3.exe into the "ignore list" for DEP
3- Right-click on the Frigate3 icon and select "run as administrator". The program should run ok even when you close it and re-open it.
If you have UAC off or DEP disabled, you shouldn't have any problems with the program and Vista.

I tried all day to download this program and I have failed. It will not download to my machine. I am running Vista. Now I am ready to give up.
I wrote earlier, but nobody answered. Did no one else have this problem. This is the first time ever that I cannot download a Giveaway program.
More frustrated than ever.

Hello again - sorry forgot to add that with the dll problem due to not having WinAmp - you might try deleting the winamp plugin in the plugin folder of this program (back it up first if you decide to put it back).
Not sure if this will work but worth a try :-) (I have WinAmp)

I'm getting the same error message as Danielle, running on Vista Home Premium: ‘Frigate3.exe has stopped working’.

Thanks GAOTD - nice offering
BTW - for people wondering the difference since last given away:
This is supposed to work on Vista - the previos version did not.
The DL is now 14.5MB (other offering was 12.4MB)
I don't know if the old DL was the Pro Version or not (this is the PRO version).
As for the DLL error - it may be worth the hassle to some to fix it - it certainly has a lot of features
ONE PROBLEM
I hope someone else can confirm this - I opened MY COMPUTER and navigated to the PROGRAM FILES folder while I was running this program also looking in the PROGRAM FILES
When I Minimized/Maximized this program it closed my regular window!
I didn't check to see if it does this regardless of what folder you're in but hoping someone can confirm - I have XP Pro SP2
Hope you all have a great day!

Directory Opus seemed like it took over my whole machine, and gave me a BSOD when I removed it. Total Commander looks like it was written twenty years ago. I like XYplorer, myself. Not free though.

Many little helpers are integrated. Registry editor, calculator, notebook, startup manager ...
It is a whole software collection in one program.
What do I like about this?
I like the colored stars that indicate file creation time.
I like the advanced file search and replace options
I also like the drive letters for qick selection of a drive.
What I don't like:
I can change the color of the stars but i cannot change the file creation date categories to lets say distuingish files which are 2 weeks old from those which are 4 weeks old.
Thumbnail view takes some seconds until it is offered and thumbnails are availabe only for pictures not for other filetypes like excel sheets.
The application is good all in all but it is completely outdated. From a modern point of view I would expect completely different features from a file manager.
For me it is a keeper, it will be a handy application to search and replace files with a lot of other features I probably will never use.

I don't like how it looks. Lots of options for changing schemes
and fonts and colors, but it won't let me scroll down.
Can only scroll through the directories sideways.
To me this is a big deal, because when scrolling down, all the
columns stay in place with all the file names and extensions
staying in place, etc.
With scrolling sideways, everything becomes a jumbled mess.

Oh yeah! I only need this for file comparisons, but it's sweet! I was using examdiff, but this blows the examdiff freeware away. Thanks GOTD. To think I almost passed this up. It's very useful for programmers and writers.

#38 I am not affiliated with the publisher of Frigate. :-) You'll see that with previous downloads I have only commented if I found the program worthwhile or if I was using better freeware at that time.
For instance yesterday I recommended Tidy Start Menu and I commented on Evernote when it was released here. Also some games in the past. So no, I am not affiliated with any of the developers of any of the programs offered by GAOTD.

Hello Robert,
It was so kind of you to try to help me yesterday!!! Thank you very much once again. Alas, I couldn't restore everything. My laptop could restore only one disk image, but not two ore more. It's very interesting and I'm blank. I had another older image on one only DVD. I restored this image.
Have a good luck!

WOW! this is a amazing utility. Once my fire fox download aborted abruptly and the file partially downloaded then was sitting in my desktop for months. I could not delete it with any of the utilities. But Frigate3 deleted it. It is now replacing my MP3 Player, Hex Editor, Text editor, RTF editor, Zip and Browser. You can not only find files containing the text you are looking for but also replace them, GR8. Yet to check the FTP. Thanks GAOTD

This is actually a windows version of Norton Utilities for DOS, way back in the 80'ties. BUT with a LOT of extra utilities thet makes this program just excellent. It has all you can mention for a filemanager...

A bit off-topic, but when I opened EVERNOTE today it offered me to upgrade to the newest release, but i declined, cause i thought that we werent entitled to upgrades?? So I thought if I accepted the upgrade, then my version of EVERNOTE would be downgraded to the FREE VERSION>..
Is this true?? Or should I have upgraded??
Thanks

This is a pretty cool giveaway, but I got it last time it was given away here. I think many here will benefit from this, I however am a Directory Opus owner so my use of this is limited. It does feel a bit dated in some ways, but for the average user it is very powerful and has features many will come to like over time. I can also state installing this caused no issues on my system. As for Vista use, you will probably need to turn off UAC to get it to work properly as Vista did not exist when this was written. For an automated way to do this without disabling UAC globally check out http://www.tweak-uac.com/programming/vista-elevator2/

It does not work. First it asked for the nscrt.dll file. When that was fixed it asked for the libsndfile.dll. When that was fixed it asked for FrigateWinAmp.dll file. Googling FrigateWinAMp.dll file drew blank. Maybe I will head t the forums and all my problems will be solved !!!!

My 1 bit...I fret over installing this after reading difficulty about installing this program by several members, and also that someone mentioned opus, hence investigated that and it sounds great. However, this is free and I have to make a decision so I did decide to try it. Installed ...yep..."like butter"... and works perfect didn't have to load or fix nada and works amazing. I am still in heaven checking this program out. If opus happens to come along on GOT again, I will try it, and maybe I will switch, but right now I am checking out one little bonus after another and love the viewer edit screen...who knew! Thought sonmeone should share that not everyone downloading has a problem doing so and so far have not had any problems installing any program offered here by GOT. Kudos on this givewaway. You guys have been offering some very nice programs to try recently and I want to say thannks mucho.
