   Retroplay USB 1.01 (11 Mb)

   Description:
   "Retroplay is a portable gaming system on a USB drive, powered by FreeDOS, for playing DOS 'Abandonware' titles".

   I Booted 'Retroplay' from the USB thumbdrive and played a couple of games quite easily. On my PC, the built-in audiocard and the USB gamepad are not supported.

   Wouldn't DOSBox Portable be a better choice? It lets you run it on Windows, have precise speed control, and sound should work. I don't see people wiping an entire USB drive just for DOS, unless they have a lot of old DOS games.

   I did not know about DOSBox Portable. Thanks for the tip!

   As you mentioned, emulators running on Windows are excellent and can be tweaked to give optimum performance. I haven't looked closely at Retroplay, but it's a viable option in it being bootable, menu-driven and running off a self-contained OS. I can see that not everyone is willing to store non-critical data on a USB drive, or may even own a storage device of that kind. In my case, I keep USB thumbdrives around, for use with portable applications.

   Edit: in the event the audio card is not supported, Retroplay will fall back on the PC speaker to playback sound. It's a far cry from the technology of Creative Labs, but true to the spirit of the DOS era.
