   This was offered two or three weeks ago (or somewhere in that timeframe).

   I found it a very useful application, but two days ago, the automatic updates for this product actioned and I let them run. BIG MISTAKE. This overwrote the "Giveaway of the Day" licence with a 30-day trial licence.

   I contacted Bolide's support desk, and all I got was:

   I am sorry, software distributed on giveawayoftheday.com can't be updated for free, I can't help you. I can only provide you with the secret link where you can purchase All My Books license with the discount.

   ----

   This is a very poor scam/rip-off!!!

   If you have loaded any information into the system, the database that is used is opened by Access with no problems. So you could use that database as a source to build your own app from.

   I've had this type of thing happen on other free downloads, though not necessarily from GOTD. My solution is this:

   Whenever something I got free wants me to download the "latest update or version", I try to make sure I download it into a different folder than the original. This happened to me yesterday with Premium Booster, an item I got from GOTD 2 years ago. I downloaded the "upgrade" into a different folder (The update recommended that I delete the previous version.....quite clever, but not clever enough!). When I went to try it to see what was new, it told me I had to pay to use it. I deleted it, and I still have the original. I have been using it for two years and have had no problems with it....so why should I upgrade anyway?

   Hopefully this will help you in with future "updates".

   According to our terms and conditions the software gained from GOTD can not be updated or upgraded to newer version. Some programs still check for updates – once you agree to update you lose the registered version. Sometimes using a Registry Cleaner can erase program registration details.

   But occasionally there is a program that can be updated- and some that can't be stopped. (like Flow!)

   I wish there was better documentation on when a program can be updated. And if it can't, the default from the author should be "don't" if it's gonna wipe a giveaway.

   That does remind me I need to get out and install one of my declawed CueCats so I can scan ISBN codes into the database. Hmmm.

   Generally, if the author is going to allow updates they will state that is the case at the time of the original update. I'll note if that's the case at the time of the update and automatically assume it's not unless so stated. Saves a lot of grief later.

   There's a lot of things that seem good in hindsight. The worst one that I found out about, due to this is that Windows 7 has a bug where the System Restore points are deleted at start-up.

   I do understand the rules about no updates, but the authors should program in the ability to turn off automatic updates.

   ayuh. and a clear yes or no on updates is spotty IMHO. several programs (like Zoner Photo Studio 12) are updateable, but it wasn't pointed out.
