That's great, I've been hoping for something like this for a looong time.
I like the idea of this to. Much better than thumbs up or down.
I was thinking what about negative ratings, but this thought just occurred to me.
Just because I don't like the program and can't think of anything nice to say doesn't mean someone else doesn't have the exact opposite view. That could apply to program I think are great.
I posted that question on the blog, just ignore it.
As I posted on the discussion at dotTech about this new change:
As it stands, not only do I believe seven different rating categories is too much (I doubt many people will take the time to rate each one accurately) but also some of the categories are redundant and thus should be cut out.
I think GOTD should leave out “easy to install”, “helpful documentation”, and “feature rich”. It is not that I don’t think those are categories that should be evaluated; those are categories that should be evaluated. However “feature rich” can be inferred by the “price” (i.e. if it doesn’t have many features it won’t be worth the price the developer is asking for so the price will be rated as being too high) and “easy to install” and “helpful documentation” can be inferred from “user friendly” (i.e. if it is hard to install and lacking a good help file, it will hurt user friendliness).
What I think GOTD needs to keep in mind is that these ratings are just that: ratings. They aren’t really supposed to give a person an insight on all of the nicks and corners of a program; a full review is for that purpose. Ratings should hit on the main points. By cutting down on three categories, GOTD ends up with a total of four rating categories. Four categories are more likely to get a response than seven and will reduce redundancy, yet still hit on the main points.
My two cents.
My personal opinion - I think it looks promising. No rating system will be perfect, but I think this new approach is moving in the right direction, for sure.
I'm wondering how the ability to post comments on each category versus over all comments is actually going to work. In other words, what will the mechanics be? Will they be overly complicated? Still, GOTD did solicit our opinion and does seem to be approaching this conscientiously, so I'm not sure we can ask for much more. As long as they don't start something they can't follow through on, then I'm willing to patiently try it out. Even a perfect plan, though, can't make up for poor execution. So as long as they can make good on their intentions, then they'll have my support.
I agree, definitely an improvement. But I also agree with Ashraf. Perhaps too many things to rate in a shot? After all, the software is only up for one day, and I would think many download it and don’t have the time to test all the features on it immediately. They usually rate it on their initial opinion of whether it will be helpful to them or not, or if they try it briefly and know they prefer something else. So it would be hard to evaluate each item right at the beginning, and I’m wondering if that would be necessary. But definitely more helpful than thumbs-up or -down!
I think being able to rate and review things is important! Whenever I'm trying to decide on any online purchase, (or for that matter - store purchase), I find that the customer comments are very helpful in making my decisions!
Nice system!!! very very good.
While I believe that some more detail is better, I think this is too much. I think it will be hard to get enough people to vote to make this meaningful. Personally, I would have been OK with just a 1-5 rating plus comments. At a minimum, I believe that Ashraf's suggestion is a good one although it lacks an overall rating which I think is important. Another possibility would be functionality, ease of use (which includes documentation), and value.
I also think that the number of votes should be posted next to each star.
To repeat what I posted elsewhere: Have to say, I’m impressed. I think most will just post general comments, rather than category comments. Also, not real sure of the value of the leave your recommendation for the developer section. Most will just put that in a general comment, too. Still, people have comment flexibility if they want it and, much more importantly, the new voting system will definitely solve the “It’s not what I want, waaaaaa!” problem. I agree with thename and others. You do need a vote counter on each category, though. It might hurt a developer to have some low stars on just one or two votes.
Still, well done, GOTD!
