Atlantis is decent word processing software, though when it comes to word processors, I believe it’s important to personally feel comfortable using the app. There are loads of choices, and in my experience finding one that you feel comfortable with is well worth it. If you’re already struggling to find the right words &/or phrases, why add to your stress by struggling with an ill-fitting GUI? Atlantis itself is a small app, with folders storing its clip library & templates etc. added to ProgramData [when installed for all users] & Documents. Monitored in my Win11 VM, I recorded 872 new registry entries, though that count is inflated by many Windows & Edge entries as well. You create the portable version by plugging in a USB stick and going through the Tools menu. When I ran the portable version in my Win10 VM I recorded new folders added to ProgramData, Users\ [UserName]\ AppData\ Roaming\, and Documents, with a startling figure of 423974 new registry entries as it apparently rewrote the driver registry hive.
To many people the benefit of using a portable app is simply that it won’t add anything to a copy of Windows – no hassle installing/uninstalling & no worries about what’s added to the registry & might need to be removed later. Otherwise, the original idea of portable apps, being able to run software on public, school, or work PCs where installing software was prohibited, is with office-related apps like this, in my opinion obsolete. That’s because office[.]com & docs.google[.]com. You can do pretty much whatever you need whenever you need on just about any device, including cell phones, if they can access the internet. Besides, if the PC is properly secured you won’t be able to plug in a USB stick, & if you can, that means someone(s) may have already planted malware that will infect your USB stick, and your PC when you plug it in back at home.
That said, someone mentioned the portable version of Libre Office in the comments for today’s GOTD… it’s the regular full version of the complete office suite adapted to the portableapps[.]com format. That means one, it’s large, at 587MB. While anything portableapps generally is Really portable, I did record 52499 new registry entries from another section of the registry apparently being rewritten. While I was over at the Portableapps site I also downloaded ZettlrPortable and FocusWriterPortable – these word processors, while less full featured, are completely portable, with nothing at all added to the hard drive, if that matters to you.
