Yet again I got a "failed to launch program" message. I really wanted this game. Does anyone have a solution? This is the third or fourth time it's happened with Game Giveaway of the Day.

The was a post in "Honeycam failed to launch program" that said it was related to Avira anti-virus. You might try disabling your anti-virus, which ever one you use, and see if that fixes it.

Do I disable it for the whole download or just before I run the setup file? I have Avast. Thanks.

Just disable for the install.
I edited my above comment to be more specific but you caught me before I finished. I used to type much faster...

No it didn't work. This is very frustrating.

First, check event viewer... is there any error message?
Next, try booting in "safe mode with networking" to install the program. I don't really think it's the anti-virus, I also use Avast and have no problems (computer problems anyway), but maybe something else is loading at startup that's causing an issue.
If that doesn't work, could you post the exact error message again?

I have Avast and it downloaded fine for me.

The event viewer says "The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because composition was disabled by a running application". I don't know what that means.

I've never seen that error before but you might still try rebooting in "safe mode with networking" to install the program.
In the meantime, I'll see what Google has to say about the error.

In case it helps at all, there were a couple few GOTDs that wouldn't work in 10 -- likewise there were some problems with the now unsupported XP -- I downloaded & installed the game in my XP Mode VM with the free version of AVG & did not have any issues, nor did I have any issues installing the GOTD game in my win10 Pro 64 bit VM. Note that if you're looking for the game's folder it installs to "TwoDesperados" rather than a folder with the game's name.

From the "Latest GAOTD won't install" thread:
For last three weeks I have been trying to install games from GAOTD with no success. I always get error "Failed to connect. Please try again later".
I have tried with different browsers but no use. I cannot go to windows 7 as I have lot of software on my XP SP3.
Is there any workaround for XP?As above no apparent work-a-round needed. You might want to browse some of the related forum threads -- Chris has done an extraordinary amount of work trying to help folks troubleshoot XP, & many one [or more] of his many suggestions would help in your case?
That said, while I really doubt anyone will or would say anything here, I'd suggest not using that excuse for running XP elsewhere -- millions of folks were in the same boat, & they [sometimes with an awful lot of work] managed the transition to later versions, so I don't expect it'll play well to other audiences. That's not a critique, but intended as friendly advise. :)

Terri,
I haven't seen a "magic bullet" answer to your problem. Since you're on the clock, let's see if there's a workaround that will at least get the game installed and worry about a solution later.
first, see if starting the stopped service fixes the problem:
type "services.msc" in a run box
scroll down to "Desktop Window Manager" and start it
try the install againIf that doesn't work, the "Desktop Window Manager" first showed up in Vista. The game is compatible with XP so see if an "XP Install" will bypass the trouble:
right-click the setup.exe file
select properties from the menu
click the compatibility tab
check "run this program in compatibility mode for" and select XP SP3
click apply and try the install againFWIW, I think the error is actually with the game installer. It might help if you'd post your OS and, DirectX version (enter "dxdiag" in a run box), and video card make/model. It's remotely possible that the installer has higher DirectX requirements than the game (and if I grasp much more straw I'll have a bale).

ChrisS, my OS is Windows 7. I use Chrome but have also tried using Windows Explorer. I don't know the answers to your other questions.
I suspect the problems is with the individual games because some games still install with no problems. The "Failed to Launch" message is random.
Thanks for all your help.
