   A common practice when GAOTD offers a new version of a previous give away, is to uninstall the older version before downloading and installing the newer one. A commenter pointed out that today’s GAOTD BurnAware Express was not a newer version of the GAOTD offered on March 24, 2008 but a different product, which was BurnAware Home Edition version 1.2.9

   I’m one of those who installed that program on March 24th. When I opened the program and accessed the “About” this is what was written:

   BurnAware v. 1.2.9 Home Edition
   “This Product is Registered to
   Giveawayoftheday

   Single User License
   1 Year Free Upgrades”

   I forgot about that little perk GloryLogic (the developer) tossed in of free upgrades for a year. So naturally I checked it out right away. Things did not exactly work out as I was led to believe:

   “Version 2.0 is available for download.
   http://www.burnaware.com
   If you are registered user please contact BurnAware Support for a new key.
   Specify your order number or your license key or email used in registration.
   Giveawayoftheday license is not valid for v2.0 and higher!”

   Very nice eh? Does anyone have an explanation or more information about this renege?

   So, did you try to upgrade it or not?

   I sent them an email asking how to get a new key to upgrade from v1.2.9 and licensed to Giveawayoftheday
   Let's see if they get back to me or not.

   I'm sorry I guess I didn't make myself understood about that. But yes I sure did try to update. When you open BurnAware Home Edition the user gets a welcome screen and on that screen they list the commands. It's on the left-hand side of the window in a column and the last commands are "Help and Support". When you mouse over the Help & Support command a dropdown of sorts opens where there are five options listed. Which are "Open Help", Visit Support Forum, "Visit Offical Web Site", "Check for Update", and "About BurnAware Home Edition". Which by the way when I click on the "About" I have to use the Windows Task Manager to clear it out (?). Anyway so I click on the "Check For Update" and that was the result. I take it you haven't tried it yourself? Can't say that I blame you, but give it a go and get back to me. Thanks

   and if you try to update may go back to 30 day demo best not to try you say Single User License

   Installs “starburnx.dll 1.0.0.1? - is this program just another cosmetic skin on top of the starburn engine?

   The authors seem fairly responsive to user suggestions and most of the criticisms found of the earlier burnaware free (posted at http://fileforum.betanews.com/review/1194973744/1/view ) seem to be addressed by this release of burnaware home.

   I’m a little disappointed that the GAOTD is the $33 1-yr licence rather than the $99 for-life license (which in practise would probably be 2-4 yrs max until we change computers again) - its not as if it would cost them more…

   the offer didn't include upgrades, in any place I could find. sorry. that appears to be text they forgot to clip from the program.

   I sure hope less careful users didn't downgrade their 'BurnAware Home Edition' to the former 'Free BurnAware'...

   ARenegade puts it very eloquently.Checking for updates gives you the
   'Giveawayoftheday license is not valid for v2.0 and higher!' notice.
   BTW The 'About' screen disappears by simply clicking on it

   Copmom,please keep us informed...

   This is the email I just got back from them:

   Hello Lauri,

   There are no updates for GAOTD license.

   So I just answered back:

   Hi John,
   Thanks for getting back to me on this. From what we all read when it was offered, on 3/29/08 .. it said something about free upgrades for a year when you click 'about':
