I've installed the program, and activated it, but after playing with the software and using it, I tried saving the work I had done, and the software says "This feature is only allowed in the registered version" requiring me to choose to buy it now, or enter a serial number. What am I doing wrong to get this for free?

When you run Activate.exe it should contact the GOTD servers, & once the date is established add the key to Windows' registry.
You need to have permission to write to the registry [log on as admin &/or run activate.exe as admin]. You might also have to temporarily turn off parts of your security software, &/or make sure your firewall allows Activate.exe to phone home. Otherwise there's a bunch of different info here in the forum, on the GOTD blog, in the FAQ sticky etc.

If you are set up in the recommended way on Windows 7 or Vista by operating under a limited account, then you will find that any giveaway that uses the separate activate program will have to be run as administrator. If you right-click on the inpaint icon, choose run as administrator, and the program then can save as it should, then this is your issue. I don't know why the GOTD team can't (won't?) update the activator to register for all users.

Thank you so much, I almost didn't try to do this as I figured I was too late to take advantage of my (free day) But decided to give it a try anyway, and It worked. I had 6 minutes left to take advantage of the deal. phew. made it! :-)

Actually it's a matter of Windows [win7 &/or 8]. Bad things can happen if the wrong stuff is written to the registry, so to help prevent that from happening Windows restricts what or who can add or alter registry keys/values.

Windows allows me to write to the limited account's registry just fine without elevation. In the past I used a program to modify activate.exe so that it would run without requiring elevation to administrator (no, it wouldn't allow activation after the giveaway so I saw nothing wrong with it). Doing so would then allow the activation to happen on my standard user account. If I ran both the modified and unmodified versions, the software would then be activated for both accounts. If I had more than one limited account, I could run the modified version on each account on the computer. I don't know if this will still work since the wrapper update.
Is there no way the activate program can be changed to detect a limited account and then first activate to the current account, then elevate to administrator to activate to that account as well?
Until this happens (or doesn't), I think the giveaway team should include this information in a faq so people would know. "Activate.exe may need to be run as administrator" doesn't quite say that the giveaway will have to be as well.
Cherish, in case you don't know, you can have the program always run as administrator by right-clicking on the icon on the desktop (if there) or start menu, select "properties" then click on the "Compatibility" tab. Under "Privilege Level" at the bottom, check the box to run the program as administrator. If it is greyed out, click the button below to "change (the) settings for all users" and you will be able to check the box on the new properties window that opens up after elevation. Now whenever you start the program it will run as administrator, same as if you did it by right-clicking and choosing to run as administrator.
