I have a question about program. Desktop Icons take memory as they are now does this program make them use more memory or the same if icons are changed?

Better than others...

Pros:

Easy setup
Any icon can be added
Packaged icons (zipped) can be loaded
Default folder can be edited (color change, adding overlay)

Cons:

Only the default folder icon can be edited.
You should run as an administrator for importing any library

where is the key????

Reply   |   Comment by reet  –  23 days ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

reet, The key will be placed by Activate.exe:

After installation and before starting the program, let Active do his work.
Look at the menu-item help to see if all is OK:

The biggest problem i see with FolderIco is that how to install icons is missing. Also what is the purpose of tooltip? Documentation is sketchy and not available via a ToolTip -- rather iconic. another problem I see is that there are no client based icons and the icons are clunky like 8 bit gifs.

I am unable to install Folderico because of failure to close File Explorer automatically. When I abort my pc hangs and I have to shut down and restart. I have Windows 10. Any advice about how to overcome this problem?

Reply   |   Comment by Ottawan  –  23 days ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-1)

Ottawan, I would recommend checking Windows Update. it is possible that you have one in the queue. If that doesn't work try the WindowsUpdate troubleshooter. Finally use the Install Troubleshooter but it does something like something funky on your side. Win 10 x64

I just love this program! It allows you to create new folder icons by adding png images as overlays. Look under www.folderico.com/how-to-customize-folder-icon.html.

Excuse my ignorance but how do you close it before you activate it? i went thru the task manager and can't find it, but it does show as an option when right clicking a common folder.

Reply   |   Comment by FJL  –  23 days ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

FJL, the right click options reside in the registry. Does not mean the program is running in the background.

FJL, "and can't find it, but it does show as an option when right clicking a common folder."
That does not mean, that the program is running.
That operation is called "Send to:" in Windows.
In short it means, that the selected item (or link to that item) is send to the program in the menu.
Here it means, that the selected folder is sent to the GOTD-program for alteration.
The program will start at that moment for action.
Maybe this link will explain a little bit:
https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/oldnewthing/20170403-00/?p=95885
A bit the same with a doubleclick on a text-file(.txt): then notepad will be opened and will open that text-file.
There is a Sendto folder in Windows and it is poosible to make ypous own items in the menu of right-click of the mouse.

"FolderIco 5.1"

Looks like the same as last year and worked fine.
This time I notices something strange. The program was set to Distributable.
And I altered some icons of maps.
When a map was copied in Win10(where the program was installed), the icons were not copies:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/mdygjwygxveh12n/HelaasWin10.png?dl=0
And in Win8.1, where the program was not installed all copies went fine:

"FolderIco allows to customize the icon of every Windows folder in one click!"

Not useful or possible! Maybe "FolderIco allows to customize the icon of each Windows folder in one click!" OR "FolderIco allows to customize the icon of every Windows folder in one click each!"

Though that all is unlikely as one has to first find and choose the icon you want with all the clicks that takes and THEN maybe with one click the click selected folders icon can be customised... to me that is a whole series of one clicks to customise a single folder not just one click to choose the folder to customise AND choose the icon you want to use AND customise the folder with no additional are you sure you want to make the change? confirmation click at all.

Activation does not work. Uninstalled, reinstalled, again nothing. Stays at 30 days trial version...

Reply   |   Comment by Olaf Heawyoo  –  23 days ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Olaf Heawyoo, Did you use the Activation after the installation and before the start of the program?
Here I installed the program and let it run. And closed it.
Than I run Activate and started the program again.
I did not see 30 day's trial, but the menu of Help was changed:

Ootje, How did you close it??? I went thru task manager and I'm stumped.

Reply   |   Comment by FJL  –  23 days ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

FJL, I id use the program and closed it normally, with Alt+F4 or the red cross.
And after that you can use Activate, but that is a tricky one, because of Themida. Maybe you have to pause your antivirus for that moment.

Reply   |   Comment by Ootje  –  23 days ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

Ootje, Thanks, opened it and then closed it thru task manager to be sure and activated

Thank you GOTD and FolderIco
You gave version 3 away previously, and I was so impressed I purchased a license for version 4. When installing today’s giveaway, I used my license key from version 4 and it registered successfully. It is so nice and refreshing to see a software vendor not being greedy and making me purchase a new license every major release. I use this software in my Onedrive Cloud. It is the only software that I have found that allows me to colour/icon my folders in my Microsoft cloud - and it remains, even after each separate Windows install. It’s even viewable from my other devices such as my iPad and Xbox. Top job. Superb. I cannot recommend this software any higher. Thank you again.
Kind regards
Richard

Laxative, .. Use Folder Colorizer .. it does work with XP .. not sure if 2.0 will and they used to have a free version. You can find it easily. They charge $10 for lifetime license for 2.0 PRO version. Not sure what is better about that over the free one. https://softorino.onfastspring.com/folder-colorizer-2/?_ga=2.247526595.591238485.1527851171-1388792525.1527851171

Laxative, just extract all the icon resources from their installer and use the standard windows change icon on the context menus of folders you want the icons customised on... this like all the others are just a graphic user interface for the built in folder icon changing facility.
