When I initially commented I clicked the "Notify me when new comments are added" checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get three emails with the same comment. Is there any way you can remove me from that service? Bless you!San Francisco Roofing, 1276 7th Ave., San Francisco, CA 94122 - (415) 800-4100

Yes, it's FileZilla, it even says so in the title bar. It suffers from the same drawback (in other words, they didn't change anything important) that made me stop using FileZilla on my laptop: file last change dates are set to when the file was downloaded, not when the server file was changed. To me, that was a killer. Since servers are not all on the same time zone (duh!), it can be difficult to know what has been changed and what hasn't. (I need to submit a change request to the development team.) On the other hand, I loved how FZ shows a queue of what files (and an accurate byte count) are left to download, and the multi-threading. My old copy of WS_FTP 95 LE doesn't do that, though it does the file change date routine right.

#63 - I know what you mean. I left a note on this suggesting that while GOTD are not to blame for putting this up, it might have been a good idea to withdraw/replace it. Nothing particuarly nasty or vindictive in that I thought - but the comment (number #5 - until it dissappeared) got 'moderated' ......

Again mods, you have my email address, if you have a problem I'd appreciate the chance to quickly discuss it with you?

Why dont my Comments stay up?? What is the problem. Attempt no 6
As i was saying, i dont have any use for an FTP program, as good as this one may be. I have several sites and i find it easy as pie to simply upload and edit my sites directly from Windows Explorer.

I have tried several , including file zilla, but Windows Explorer is easier.

Mods, if there is a problem, please email me..

Well, Well, after howling at the Moon, mostly in vain, at last Ashraf has touched many nerves!! I`ve seen a paid for rip-off of spybot search & destroy a few years back now, but well done! Ashraf,We all read you, even if we don`t often agree with you! I use Total Commander plus Powerdesk has an FTP unit, thats not much cop really compared with T.C It`s an old version, the updated one won`t work with ME , even though it`s supposed to.

When Ahead complicated the updates for Nero 6.00 I got my updates for it via their FTP site using T.C They do have a useful help file on the peculiarities of setup etc on their site, one exasperating one is if there`s too many users you can`t get back in line and have to wait around!

Asschaff - c'mon young man - if you want to be a tech journalist you've gotta start stepping up. You have an entertaining writing style and potential to be very good - however journalists do research and report FACTS. They don't make wild claims and unsupported assertions (Example: Yesterday's offering "Uses too much RAM"... Oh yeah? How much exactly does it use?.... What is acceptable?....) Any tech editor would nail you to the wall - your 'reviews' would never make it anywhere beyond here or your blog because you make unsupported assertions and statements that are nothing more than your unsubstantiated opinion. Nothing wrong with that if you say so- just don't try to pass it off as authoritative or factual. Pity more people aren't able to discern the difference.

On to ExtraFTP - It may be true that these guys have simply re-branded FileZilla, but IMO your righteous indignation is completely misplaced - and way off base (and maybe leaves YOU liable for a slander lawsuit?) - because if you had dug just a little deeper you would have concluded that they have NOT violated the GNU to do so. All they have to do is reference the source code and make their changes available - and they've done that. Their UI is different than FileZilla as is their featureset. It's not a direct copy and even if it was - under the GNU that would be fine so long as the source code is made available. It's up to the general public and the market to sort out. Bubby's post (intended to be humorous, but it is actually all they need to do) proves that they reference the source code.

Gray Area.... maybe. Blatant abuse of GNU? No Way.

Hi Folks -
I decided to try and do a fair, unbiased side-by-side comparison to see if I could find useful differences between the two programs. Logged into the same site on both. I do like the quick-icons at the top of Extra's page for adding things to queue, processing the queue, and so on. Those were handy, and could not find a way to replicate that on FileZilla. However, at the top of ExtraFTP's connection it even says, "(my login name)@webpages.charter.net - FileZilla." I tried to be fair about it, and had hoped to find something to redeem this program, but the top line buttons were all that was there of any interest. Uninstalled it. Keep trying, GOTD. I'll be back tomorrow to see what's new.. :)

I'm happy that I am able to download software that worth money every day for free, but I'm a bit disappointed that ExtraFTP is not full version. Where it says enter license name, its ok, because license number is provided in read me text, but to register this program I am asked to enter license code as well. And do not have a clue what is license code.
Thank You very much for reading this.

the title says "a fast and reliable cross-platform FTP", but it only support Windows environment, I thought platform refer to Mac vs Windows vs UNIX ..etc, the FileZilla they based on do have clients for other platform. ExtraFTP only has Windows installer.

An addendum to my last post (if it ever gets out of moderation):

I've just taken a look at the ExtraFTP web page and it actually says "ExtraFTP is based on FileZilla, and it is GPL software."

Of course, this doesn't change the fact that they're violating FileZilla's license, since they're neither including a copy of the GPL nor providing the source code for their modified version of the program.

Pretty stupid of them really, since if they had done those two things it would actually be legal for them to charge thirty bucks for their FileZilla-with-a-slightly-disimproved-UI-and-no-added-features, ripoff though it is.

This is from their website.

ExtraFTP is based on FileZilla, and it is GPL software.

This is from wikipedia.

The GPL is clear in requiring that all derivative works of code under the GPL must themselves be under the GPL.

I don't see anywhere to download the source code.

This is a clear violation of the GPL and is going to be reported to FileZilla.

And can you really trust a company that takes open source software and tries to sell it.

For those posters who are claiming that Ashraf's mistaken about this being an illegally rebranded copy of FileZilla rather than just a program whose UI resembles FileZilla's, you might want to take a look at the evidence:

1) In comment #10, BuBBy provided a picture of a dialog where they forgot to remove a reference to FileZilla.

2) There are numerous instances of the string "filezilla" in the executable file ExtraFTP.exe.

3) The ExtraFTP installation directory includes these rather obviously-named files:
C:\Program Files\ExtraFTP\FileZilla.icns
C:\Program Files\ExtraFTP\docs\filezilla.man
C:\Program Files\ExtraFTP\locales\filezilla.pot
C:\Program Files\ExtraFTP\resources\FileZilla.icns
C:\Program Files\ExtraFTP\resources\filezilla.rc
C:\Program Files\ExtraFTP\resources\16x16\filezilla.png
C:\Program Files\ExtraFTP\resources\32x32\filezilla.png
C:\Program Files\ExtraFTP\resources\48x48\filezilla.png
(There are also a bunch of files that simply have "fz" in their names.)

4) There are several files in the included "docs" subdirectory that reference FileZilla.

5) The description embedded in the executable is "FileZilla FTP Client". You can most easily see this by right-clicking on the ExtraFTP.exe file in an Explorer window and selecting "Properties" from the menu. The program's Description is listed in both the "General" and "Version" tabs in the Properties dialog (at least in Windows XP). If you check the Version tab, you'll also be able to see that the Company name is "FileZilla Project", the Internal Name is "FileZilla 3", the Original File name is "filezilla.rc", and the Product Name is "filezilla".

6) If you tell the program to check for updates, it says it's connecting to update.filezilla-project.org.

At one point, I also saw the program's window title change from "ExtraFTP" to "FileZilla", although I haven't been able to reproduce this effect since then.

(As an aside, I also found one place in the program where it refers to itself as "PlatoFTP", which suggests that they may have actually rebranded FileZilla more than once and forgotten to re-change the name in that one spot.)

There's really no question what Extra Software has done here, especially given the amazingly shoddy job they did of covering their tracks.

I'm sure the GAOTD admins didn't realize they were being provided illegal software, but by distributing it they are every bit as much in violation of FileZilla's license as Extra Software is and I would urge them to remove this program from their site immediately (as well as demand a refund from Extra Software, of course). Anyone who wants the program could still download a legal copy from the FileZilla web site after all.

During installation the install calls the program version 6.64. After installation and under Help -> About, the version is 3.2.3 which is fairly close the FileZilla's current version of 3.2.7.1.

The GUIs are also quite similar.

There no EULA during installation... odd.

I have never cared for FileZilla and do not believe I'll care for ExtraFTP either. However, it is free today, so I think I'll try it just for kicks.

I think it is legal to take an open source program and make it your own. You can also charge for it and still be legal. People have done this with Linux for years. What people need to do is look at the differences between FileZilla and ExtraFTP and decide if it's worth the $29.98 price.

#10 - BuBBy, don't think the upgrade should be done. The upgrade is Filezilla 3.2.7.1, which is Filezilla itself. So, when you upgrade, ExtraFTP becomes Filezilla and you lose all the features of ExtraFTP, correct? But I do not see any functions of ExtraFTP that are different with Filezilla, except the Site Manager.

#22 - EB GB, where may we find the thumbnail viewing of directories?

#22 - EB GB, where did you find the list of features of ExtraFTP? I could not find it on their home page.

There is no Help, when I click on it, it brings us to the product page.

Without Help, can someone who knows tell us how to use the Site Manager? I have tried to use the Site Manager but could not understand its features at all. Without Help, unfortunately, no one will know what to do with the Site Manager.

Looks like I will have to un-install the software as it is merely a re-branding of Filezilla. The intersting part is that ExtraFTP is 3.2.5 and when one check for updates, it ask you to download Filezilla 3.2.7.1, which is the latest Filezilla version. I know, because I am using Filezilla.

ExtraFTP is an app to transfer files between a PC & [usually remote] server. It used to be that most all downloads were hosted on an FTP server, but this is no longer the case -- though FTP servers are still used by some companies, most downloads are handled by http. Nowadays programs like ExtraFTP are mostly used to upload files [your site for example] to web servers.

Many web hosting services provide software or some other means to upload your pages, & many web site creation apps can upload your site as well. In fact, with some web site creation software managing complete sites is such a big part of it, that it can be difficult should you want to use an external ftp client app. Here's a couple of links giving some comparisons of a few alternatives: [http://compnetworking.about.com/od/softwareapplicationstools/tp/ftpclients.htm] & [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_FTP_client_software]. One not mentioned is Fresh FTP -- Fresh products aren't bad in my experience, but their email notice of updates like their site includes ads to other software, which some might object to. [http://www.freshwebmaster.com/]

Setting ftp clients apart is their ease of use connecting with on-line servers, along with file management features. Setting a client up to connect with your host's servers can be pretty confusing, so how easy it is to fill in the blanks according to your web host's docs matters -- when you're reading down a host provided list that you may not understand in the 1st place, you don't want to be hunting all over, trying to find where you set what in your ftp client software. File management boils down to saving you time selecting which files on your hard drive go to what server in which directory when.

If you have more than one site, or more than one section on your site, it saves you work when your ftp client remembers what goes where. If you update only portions of your site, it helps if your software's smart enough to only upload the parts that have changed. Since you usually want to update your site during "off" hours, scheduling's important.

ExtraFTP seems to fit the bill in most respects, but it's harder to check out all the features without a help file included or on-line. Of course you could just refer to the FileZilla docs [http://filezilla-project.org/support.php?type=client&mode=help&version=3.2.7.1], but they're not going to mention what sets ExtraFTP apart. For now at least I'm just going to consider ExtraFTP a version of FileZilla with a re-worked, albeit nice IMHO toolbar.

I have been getting GOTD for quite a while now and have noticed something that is an ongoing problem with this site. The "reviews" here are typically less than stellar. It seems as though there are many people who provide "reviews" who just like hearing their own lips flap.

Too many times I have to sift through the erroneous BS of those who post "I didn't download the product...", "I will give you a review later", etc. without any regard for the idea that this space is supposed to help evaluate whether someone wants to get the product or not. These comments do not help in the process at all and just makes the rest of us have to look through this crap in order to make good decisions.

If you have something useful to say that pertains to a "review", I love reading it; however, if you just want to whine about something you know nothing about, do it somewhere else, please. Wading through nonsense is a waste of my time.

The tidbits about other software/methods are valuable contributions and are appreciated. Wah, Wah, Wah is not.

ExtraFTP includes some files named FileZilla.*, so that pretty much answers the question of whether ExtraFTP uses FileZilla code. The apps are not identical. I don't know what comments will show up here later, but right now quite a few discuss whether this is right, legal etc...

So anyone can do their own fact checking if they wish... FileZilla is provided under the GPL -- see: [http://wiki.filezilla-project.org/FAQ#General_FAQ]. The GPL (GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE) is explained here: [http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html].

In the Preamble the GPL states: "offer you this License giving you legal permission to copy, distribute and/or modify it.", & in the body of the license spells out responsibilities. *If* ExtraFTP breaks any rules, legal or otherwise, it clearly would be in the area of those responsibilities, so if you're concerned, visit the link & give it a read. :-)

Gee Ashraf, seems like you may have jumped the gun this morning. If I was going to copy an open sourced program it seems like would copy everything about it. I mean why cut out eight functions instead of adding more? Glancing at all of the screen shots of both programs I find only one to be anywhere near the other and this is common with a lot of GUI’s. So quit screaming wolf and let others be the judge. I saw no restrictions reguarding the open source on Filezilla’s site.

> That's perhaps because you're blind. Check the GNU license documentation.

By the way, isn’t Filezilla’s name a rip off of Godzilla?

> If the makers of Godzilla decide to file a lawsuit, technically they might win. But no point talking about a rip off of 5 letters when there are chunks of codes getting ripped off.

TRUTH IN ADVERTISING
SUGGESTION: Dear Giveaway of the Day, when advertising (or notified of) such rebranded software, please add a notice (in a prominent area) such as:
"THIS IS A REBRANDED VERSION OF A FREE PROGRAM"
You should provide the name of the Free Program and a link to it.
Then the public will be educated.

There is only one software, so there is no need to list it in an array. Giveaway of the Day offers free software for 24 hours. After the free download period, you must purchase the software from the developer (or wait a couple of weeks for a similar software to be available.)

rayok-(9)- "start menu run box type in “command” and on the dos screen type ftp" While this may be true, as is the comment about using Windows Explorer for FTP, FileZilla is a little more user friendly, and Windows Explorer FTP doesn't offer passive mode, which some FTP sites require. In addition, regular FTP clients pass data in clear text, which means that anyone scanning TCPIP traffic can capture your userid and password, as well as any unencrypted files that you transfer. Always use SFTP or SCcopy unless you're using anonymous FTP.

#1 is on dangerous ground and the moderated board that permits it is on equally slick footing. Accusing someone of illegal activity is not trivial and -- IF you are wrong -- can have unpleasant effects for all involved.

As to the illegality, a program can have a similar interface and NOT be a violation of *anything*. THAT depends upon the code. Maybe #1 has seen this code and compared it, but I kind of doubt it. And THAT is the problem.

All that being said, if you like Filezilla, you probably have little reason to change. I do and I don't. End of story. Short, simple and, best of all, I'm not going to get sued.

This soft is in the same time:free and commercial.Free if you don't want improvement and commercial if you want upgrade, loock on their site,if you want to understand.Problem for me is that i don't know what is FTP and how to work with FTP soo i can't put comment about subject.Another problem is that at all new soft instaled you must to scan for malicious code. This company it was good from this point of view.Never find virus ,trojans, spyware from this company.Pdf Zilla and File Zilla is created by the same guys?Maybe is inspiration from Fille Zilla but probably are not 100% identical. If are similar probably are similar in quality. When il be put here:Extra FLV SWF Video Converter?I waiting from some time. And don't forget scan your entire computer after each program free or comercial to don't have surpris.

I suggest to download FileZilla version 2.
To me, FileZilla 3 has become unusable due to limitations that prevoius version does not had.
FileZilla 2 can be downloaded from oldApps.com.

Ok, so after reading Ashraf's comments I thought this was pretty crappy situation today, but I really could use an auto FTP client, I currently use FileZilla but have not had success at setting up auto scheduled transfers, so I thought since that feature is identified I thought I would give it a try. Well so far I can't find anyway to set up auto scheduled transfers with this either, so I went to the website using the Help tab, and it does take you to the website, and they do have a promotion page, but Help -- guess again, nowhere on their site can I find any instance of help related to this application, plenty of entries for their other applications but not this one. That makes me think they did a quick skin job on FileZilla and pushed this out there just to get people to take a look at their name and other products. So for one of the very very few times I am throwing my 2 cents in and saying this one is a big loser at best and at worse maybe even a straight out liar. Sorry GOTD but you dropped the ball today.

If you use Firefox (and if you don't, why don't you?), you should just add FireFTP to it. It's simple and easy to use, and as an add-on, it's always right there.

So what if they re branded the software? I use filezilla for a long time now and I did not notice options like thumbnail view of images on server, Download acceleration, etc. These are certainly not "cosmetic" changes. If they somewhere have with little gray text instructions on how to get source code then what they do is perfectly legal. Even if they do not offer the source code, there are millions of people and sites offering illegal commercial software (and earning on it), so why all the fuzz about one Open Source software on which someone earns (not that I support illegal actions, just think there is too much fuzz). After all, hundreds of developers worked for free on many "open source" projects which later were sold to big corporations and most of those developers who worked for free got nothing from it, while others made millions (recently MySQL as example). So if original developers are stupid enough to work for free (and desperately trying to become famous in that way), I am happy that there is someone who will at least make some profit from their hard work :) (although I do not support them not including the source code as per agreement). These days open source is nothing but a way for big corporations to get programmers workforce for free. Companies which benefit most from open source are IBM, HP, Oracle, etc. I don't think helping these companies is good deed especially since these companies them self will sue you for some "patent infringement" if they see any threat in your start up ought-to-be-successful company.

By the way, isn’t Filezilla’s name a rip off of Godzilla?

I really object to an open source program, (and an excellent one at that!) being seemingly copied and offered for sale. I make a contribution to SourceForge every month. It is disgraceful to see this, but I guess inevitable. FileZilla does all of the above and more. Forget the "Extra" buttons. FileZilla is really easy to use and has had a lot of development time, put in by some awesome people who really know how to write great open source programs. As a footnote, I too, don't think it was GAOTD's fault. So forgive them. GAOTD? Can you somehow check things like this in future and try and stop them from being offered?

Thanks for the tip, Ashraf - I believe under the circumstances, I'll pass this one up and just go grab the original Filezilla instead. I've used it in the past and it's good stuff. It's even free for commercial use. Why anyone would want this copycat proggie is beyond me.

It does beg the question:

How many of the programs that Extra sells are rip offs.

Sorry (should have added to previous post but forgot).

I forgot to mention that I've been using Leech FTP (long gone) since the late 90's and it still works wonders.
